Retrieve footage after imovie crash?
I just uploaded my family holiday photos and videos from the cameras and phones to iphoto, deleted them from the devices (can you tell where this is heading?). Then I have opened imovie and automatically imported iphoto videos. I was 10 minutes into creating a project when imovie crashed my entire computer. Now the photos and videos have been lost from iphoto but thumbnails of them still appear in imovie. Is there anyway to retrieve the data of this footage? Thanks
I can look at it in the basket, even watch it, but I cannot get it out of there and back into the project. No dragging ot dropping nothing.
That's very strange. You should be able to drag a clip from the Trash window to the iMovie Timeline or Clips pane. (Try both, if you haven't.)
What happens when you try? Does the clip bounce back? Does it simply refuse to drag at all?
There is one way I can make it bounce back here. It bounces back when I drag a clip from the Trash window of Project A to the Timeline/Clips pane of Project B. Just yesterday I got confused about which Trash window was for what project, and wondered "What are those clips doing here?". Is it possible there are multiple projects open and you are dragging to the wrong project?
Everything else you described sounds normal. If iMovie crashes after you import clips but before you save the project, the clips end up in the Trash. iMovie doesn't know what to do with them when the project opens and moves them to the Trash for you to do with them as you like.
I seem to recall a few reports of a refusal to drag when the project disk — the disk the project is saved on — uses the wrong disk format. If you are using an external disk, see this note, which describes the format to use:

Project file disappears after iMovie crashes. Can I recover the file?
Working on an iMovie 9.0.9 project when the SBOD starts up and then the program crashes. I reopen iMovie but when I attempt to open the file it no longer shows up in the Project folder window. The file still appears in the iMovie Project folder on the external hard drive were it was stored, just not within the program. Attempts to recover the file from Time Capsule backup result in the file opening with no content. All attempts to open it from that folder result in nothing showing up. This is the second file I have lost in the last week. I've been working on this project for several days and have been able to open the file each time until the crash. Never had this problem before I updated iMovie in mid-May.
I'm running an iMac Early 2008, with 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Memory, Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB, Software OS X 10.8.3. Using an Iomega USB 1.5 TB external HD for file storage and Seagate 3TB HD for Time Capsule. If you use Acrobat's Searchable Image (Exact) then the image is untouched and present.
If you use Acrobat's Searchable Image the image is still present but has be "tweaked" by Acrobat so the image isn't the "original" (not "exact").
If you use Acrobat's ClearScan the original image is gone. Recognized characters are replaced with an Acrobat internal font. Characters not recognized are left as a bit-mapped image.
As the first two above still have the image you can use Acrobat XI to Save As Other and select a supported image file format.

Retrieving catalog after computer crash
Elements 10. Win 7.
My computer crashed and I reinstalled PSE 10. Last time this happened, a few years ago I had to rebuild the entire catalog. With around 10K photos, it took days. I haven't opened PSE 10 since reinstalling and wanted to make sure that I don't make any mistakes in the process. Does any one have any caveats or tips before I launch into this process? If they are gone, they are gone, unless you can find something in the recovery folder (if you have CS6 or CC)
http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2012/04/background-save-and-auto-save-features-in-photoshop-c s6.html
But you are the second person in the last week who lost hours and hours of work. The last one had the computer crash as it was saving, so even though he was using good practice, and periodically hitting Ctrl s to save, the psd file became corrupted.
So best practice is to save big projects with fifferent file names as often as you need for safety.
I am currently working on a laptop because my main system is broken, but I have access to all my files because I am working with backups on external drives. Drives are cheap nowadays, and lost data is too terrible to even think about. -
After Effects Crashes when trying to replace footage
I recently got a new PC and the new computer has drive letters assigned to removeable drives that used to point to where my files were stored. When I try to replace the footage, After Effects crashes and does not give me any option to send a crash report. I updated to 10.0.1.19 and updated my video card driver (which fixed a problem with OpenGL not registering), but it did not solve my issue. I can include the crash details here:

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks for the insight. "Performance of the external drives" was pretty close, I think.
I believe it was due to the fact that when I created the project, the files were located on an external drive "F". My new system designated drive "F" as one of the built-in card reader slots. AE did not want to replace the source from the card reader unless 1) there was a card in the slot and 2) the original file (or one with the same name at least) was on the card. I wasn't about to go through all that heartache and discontent (I was missing about 30 files, and the 1GB card was nowhere close to big enough to hold the 9GB of data), so I used the Disk Management utility to reassign the drive letters. Luckily I have a couple of external drives - one to assign to the source "F" drive and another to be the new target "M". There was some creative shuffling that had to happen to get the connections right, but it made AE happy. -
IMovie crashed after taking a video while saving
Is there any way to recover all/some of the video iMovie took with my built in camera after it crashed ? I took the movie (it was ~1hr30min, so pretty long, though I had pleny of sace on my HD) and after I pressed the "stop" button, it proceeded to save the movie. I came back later and iMovie had crashed, with a dialogue asking if I wanted to relaunch.
Is there a temporary file somewhere that it saved the raw data or anyway to retrieve/recover the footage?
Would be a great help as I don't know if I can do that all over again!
Thanks!See my answer in the following thread. Note however that it refers to the preference file for iMovie '11. For iMovie '09 the file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Also, if you are not on Lion, ignore my advice on how to access your User/Library folder - just navigate to it in the normal way. Here's the thread:

You're welcome -
After up dating IMovie now it crashes all most as soon as it starts.
With iMovie closed, trash iMovie's preference file. Note that, when next opened, iMovie will create a fresh file with the default settings. You can change these if desired (in iMovie's menu select iMovie>Preferences and make your changes under each of the tabs).
The preference file is located in your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences. It is named "com.apple.iMoveApp.plist". In Lion, to access your User/Library folder, hold down the Option key and click on Go in the Finder menu. The Library folder will appear in the drop down list. Lion has hidden the Home Library folder, but in earlier versions of Mac OS X it was available like all other folders.
Dragging the preference file to the Trash will not harm your Events or Projects, but may fix the problem of iMovie crashing at start-up. After installing the 9.0.6 update iMovie worked fine for me, with no need to trash the preference file.
TIP: Don't empty the Trash until you are satisfied that iMovie has started up correctly, and is working OK, after deleting the preference file. If iMovie still does not start up, drag the preference file back to its original location in the User/Library/Preferences folder.

IMovie crashes upon startup after installing Lion
I recently installed Lion from a download. I was able to open iMovie three times to realize none of my previous movies showed up. Now, a week later, iMove crashes upon starting it. I do not have a disk to reload from, and the update manager tells me I am up to date on all my software.
All I wish to do at this point is download my movies from gallery.me.com, but now that I am oniCloud, the storm has started! I can't get to my gallery to download!Nanotechie1992,
Thanks for this suggestion. I have the Snow and the iLife DVDs, so I will attempt the iLlife install first. If this does not work, I will load Snow over Lion. If this doesn't work, I plan on going back in Time to before Lion. If this doesn't work, I have the HD Apple said was bad (it works perfecty well as an external) with the first version of Snow on it. I rebooted from it earlier to create QT movies from my older movie files.
Back in Lion, I attempted to import old movies to see if I can create HD Movie but it crashes.
I will let you know.
I haven't heard the word Nano for awhile. It takes me back to the 60s and IBM! Thanks for the memories! Keypunched cards and big tape drives! I loved to watch the 7074 do a sort! Amazing.
Let's hope this simple step back doesn't too many gigs of nanos!

I've been working on a university project for weeks now and was doing so this afternoon.
As I went to import a MP4 (just like I had done every time before) iMovie crashed.
Now when I try to open it, all I get is a black box with grey boarders at the top and left-hand side.
I've tried to get the movie from the iMovie library, and other sources on the mac, but I can't seem to find it.
The assignment is due next week, and the editing for the project is huge.
Is there anyway I can get it back?
I don't care about iMovie itself, as long as I can get the movie I was working on back.
Any help would be much appreciated.
From an extremely stressed studentHi ..
Try recent items.
Click your Apple top left in your screen.
From the drop down menu click: Recent Items then look under Documents.
If that doesn't help, try a Spotlight search > Mac Basics: Spotlight -
Any hope of finding my edited movie after a crash?
Just minutes before finishing the edits on an important project, iMovie crashed. After rebooting and restarting iMovie the entire project was gone. The raw footage remains in the events folder at the bottom, but nothing up in the project window.
Is there any chance that my edited version is buried somewhere on my drive? Or did I lose everything?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
LaneAre you using Time Machine? If so it is easy to recover.
If not, check the trash and check the imovie Projects folder. Look for things that have the same name as your project or that look strange. If you find one, describe it here. -
Imovie crashing when copying Projects and Events to external
This is driving me crazy. Imovie keeps crashing when I try and copy some of my projects and events to the external from within iMovie. I can copy the project and event files separately as a work-around, but it's taking me forever. These are very short movies, less than 3 minutes, and the original footage is from a Kodak zi6. I've already copied more than 40, and all went well. Now it keeps crashing.
Why can't I just copy from the Finder. It would be a LOT faster. I'd like to keep the projects/ events linked so that I can edit in the future, if necessary.
External: Firewire, Guid Partition Table, and Mac OS extended (journaled). Lots of free room on both drives.I found the solution and just want to share with you...
1. I closed iMovie
2. I renamed my existing root folder projects and events by adding a '_' at the beginning of the folder name.
3. I copied all my content (projects and events) within the finder and not as normally recommended within iMovie from the internal to the new external hard drive.
4. When starting iMovie again the newly copied folder are recognized and it takes a while (depending of the amount of clips and projects) until iMovie is available after this start.
5. The events and projects are now shown in the new external harddrive and all files are accesible. Also all clips from the events are correctly linked in the projects.
I have tried this way since the normal decribed routine did not work on my iMac (iMovie crashed every time). -
Imovie crashed every time I try to export... Help!?!
Imovie crashes when I try to export the movie I have made. I have tried in many different formats... And I have tried to restart, update and everything but nothing works... Please help!!!!!! I spend many hours on this project, but now I cannot finish it:-(
If you continue having this issue, my recommendation is to upgrade your OSX to 10.8 Mouintain Lion. I know hat will cost money but that will solve the issue. Before upgrading remember backing up your files first. After upgrading check if the problem persist. If the problem persist you would have to purchase the latest iMovie version from the iLife 11' problem. As I said before, check if the problem persist first before making an upgrade. Here's a link I found useful to give you some of the information above. https://discussions.apple.com/message/18804124#18804124

The subject line of this post pretty much explains everything.
I use a MacBook White from 2009 which I upgraded to Snow Leopard earlier this year. I use iMovie 8.0.6, have never upgraded to iLife '11 (iMovie 9.0).
I've never in these 3 years had a problem exporting videos to YouTube, I have 62 on there and just now have an issue. Every time I try to view a project full screen AND try to export a video iMovie crashes and shuts down fairly quickly (after about 20 seconds when attempting export).
Today I went to the Apple store about this, didn't get much resolution on it. They couldn't determine what was wrong. The attempted fix they were going to suggest I had already done (deleting the plist and restarting iMovie). And that fix didn't help. They checked my hard drive and it was fine.
Has anyone had this same problem? What did you do to fix it (if anything)?
One solution, which is what I'll probably do, is to buy and upgrade to iLife '11 (iMovie 9.0)... but without backing things up as I don't have an external hard drive and can't afford to buy one anytime soon (am unemployed). Where my videos are on YouTube may serve as my "backup" and "hard drive" (you can take videos form online, put them on your computer and into iMovie).
What do you suggest for fixing this? Is there another way to do it without upgrading to iMovie 9.0? What are your expriences with this issue?Turns out I'm going to have to BUY iLife '11 (from Best Buy) because the download version on Apple's site is for those with Lion only and I have Snow Leopard. This is becoming a major PAIN. Apple shoudl continue to offer its older products online at least (if not in their stores) rather than just dropping them completely.

I'm having trouble with iMovie crashing when I Finalize Project or Export Movie.
Every time I Finalize Project or Export Movie my iMovie crashes.
This has only started happening recently, I was creating movies and finalizing and exporting with no problems before.
I'm doing exactly the same thing - creating simple short movies with jpg stills and an mp3. It's all working fine until I Finalize or Export, then it crashes.
Can anybody help, I've tried every thing I can think of. I've installed the latest version from the Mac Store, but it still happens. I'm on an iMac with OSX 10.7.5

"I continued to talk to other Apple Mac users on iMovie….Interesting to have found out that their movies were made using iDVD without any known issues as yet…Looking at the results from Apple Support Forum and Youtube, problems appears to be when NOT using iDVD. I and many others can't understand how these many technical problems were overlooked by the programmers of iMovie. One would have thought iMovie problems have been iron out prior to getting rid of iDVD. By the way when I first contacted Apple Support back on 16th Nov, I was told I need to RE-INSTALL my computer…..that I did and in the process my iDVD was removed and never was re-installed.
May I suggest you delegate a junior person or someone string together a project consisting over near 1700 images, approx. 25mins of video footage, titles and including with and without transitions then export the project.
I am still in the dark as to what is being done about this extended non result. I am not sure if is known by the people who is in charge of this iMovie programme. it would be nice to get some sort of feedback. Not sure if I should refer this to a third party to do the testing?? I am sure Apple's competitors would love to make a mockery of this.
There has to be a time frame for this to end, as I and many others can't simply sit here in the dark and wait for someone to come back for a solution, this could be months or years who knows. As you can appreciate I am not the only user anxiously waiting for a solution.
I guess I am in a way representing other worldwide users in pursuing a solution on this matter ASAP. I therefore ask you to please make this a priority if this is at all possible.
Many thanks."
I've been corresponding to them since Fri 16th Nov on and off without a solution. -
IMovie crashed, lost project. How do you SAVE in iMovie? Where's the file?
Just spent 4-5 hours building a complicated movie from a year's worth of footage. At some point, iMovie crashed. I think I lost all those hours of creative decision making, since I cannot see the file when I reopen iMovie.
There is no "open" command in the file menu. There is no "save" command in the file menu.
This would imply that Apple was autosaving for me to save me trouble. Hmm. I can save in almost every program I use, and revert, and save versions.
How do you save a project in iMovie? I don't see save in the file menu, as has been the steadfast tradition of Apple applications since I purchased my first Mac in 1984. What in the blazes have you done with SAVE? It is so basic.
Along the same line, where is the project file located on my hard drive? I would like to open it. Since I assume you have been autosaving to somewhere, could you please let me know where my file is saved.
<Edited by Host>This just appeared to happen to me too. I tried clicking on the file in Movies/iMovie Projects. That didn't work.
Then, I made a copy of the file in a safe place. I noticed it was 2.2 MB, so something had to be in there. Next, I started iMovie and clicked the Project Library arrow. The project was listed there. I opened it and got back most but not all of the work. It lost a lot of my audio changes. Here's the thing. I worked until about midnight, and then left iMovie up and running til noon. You would think it would have autosaved the changes by the time I came back. I suggest making your own copy of the file now and then, just in case.
