Retrieve/Modify the transformation matrix of an object

Hi,
I'm new to this, so I have a lot of questions.
Here is what I am trying to do.
I know the designer I work with will draw some paths on an isometric grid (30 degrees )
I am interested in the paths that get skewed 30 degrees vertically.
I will need to create a 'bottom' plane for the selected path, that means I will need to copy
the object and shear/skew it.
As far as I can tell I need to:
1.retrieve the selected PathItem
2.clone it
3.transform it ( skew/shear ) it.
I've to create a scaleMatrix using
app.getScaleMatrix(Math.atan(30 * Math.PI / 180) * 100,Math.atan(60 * Math.PI/180) * 100);
then transforming my path, but the skew looks pretty random.
I know that in theory
skewX = Math.atan( matrix.c * angleInRadians);
skewY = Math.atan( matrix.b * angleInRadians);
but things aren't as easy to do in Illustrator as they are in Flash
Is it possible to retrieve the transformation matrix of a PathItem ? (I've looked in the docs and found nothing of use )

What exactly is it that you are trying to accomplish with the ScaleMatrix? Are you trying to merely skew a selection by 30 degrees?
If so, do you understand that merely skewing something will not yield the sides of an object drawn in isometric?
For example:
Assume two 1" squares, normally oriented and abutting each other side by side.
Skew the right side of the rightmost square vertically upward 30 degrees.
Skew the left side of the leftmost square vertically upward 30 degrees.
I hope you understand that does not yield the left and right visible sides of a 1" isometric cube. In an isometric cube, all the visible edges are the same length. (In an isometric drawing of a 1" cube, each edge measures 1". In an isometric projection of the same cube, each edge measures approximately .82" [cosine of the isometric angle, 35'16"]).
By merely skewing the squares, you are effectively lengthening their top and bottom edges. The vertical edges are now out of proportion.
You can draw the "bottom" or "top" of a 1" isometric cube by rotating a normally-oriented 1" square 45 degrees and then scaling it vertically by 58% (sine of the iso angle). Then rotate two copies of that about the resulting bottom-most point to complete the cube.
Maybe you know this and I'm misunderstanding what you are trying to do.

The short answer is "no", (0, 0) is not the origin of placed art (unlike kRasterArt). Off the top of my head, I believe when you place art, its original state is upside-down and flipped horizontally in the upper-right of the artboard. If you want to see where it starts, simply create an identity matrix and apply that as the matrix for the kPlacedArt and you'll see how it starts. Yes, its pretty crazy.

Applying Transform Matrix

I am applying a transform matrix to a UIComponent. The width
of the object changes appropriately when displayed; however, the
width property on the component is 0. Does anyone know why the
width property is not updated? Is the only way to retrieve the

I think we need to set the dimensions of the UIComponent as well. Check whether the code below works

Feature request: make the "transform" dialogs non-modal

Currently, the transformation dialogs accessible at Object>Transform are modal. I'm talking about "Move…", "Rotate…", "Reflect…", and so forth. These dialogs, when open, lock the user out of any interaction with the artboard other than the "preview" button, until the dialog is closed.
Even more problematically, they lock the scroll and zoom factor of the current user view, so that there's no way to inspect how a precise numeric adjustment affects a part of the layout outside the current window (or within the current window but very small inside it) without committing the change, inspecting it, and then later undoing if necessary. This creates cycles of tedious user adjustments (especially on small monitors) that really should be possible in one user step, by toggling the preview button on and off, and zooming/scrolling.
This is contrary to most modern UI design principles, which suggest avoiding modes unless they are truly and meaningfully necessary. I don't think this is one of those cases. Photoshop made dialogs for adjustment layers non-modal with CS4, and while there are issues with the newer interface (see John Nack's Configurator workaround), I think it's a win overall. Illustrator needs to catch up in this regard. I realize there is some pretty serious refactoring involved to do this, but it has to be do-able.

Just so you know you're not alone; I've been complaining about AI's archaic dependency upon modal dialogs for many years.
...I'm fully aware of the Transform panel...observing that there's another way to do it...doesn't really address any of my points here...
But it's not "another way to do it," because the functionality is not the same. The modal dialogs include crucial functionality that cannot be done in the Transform palette. For example, moving something in terms of distance and direction (diagonally), instead of merely by lame X and Y factors. Or transforming about an off-object center of transformation, rather than merely by the 9-point proxy.
...the "preview" isn't updated on keyboard entry, and the "preview" checkbox need to be manually toggled on and off...
But the preview does refresh (and does not have to be toggled) in response to keyboard entry if that keyboard entry is by the arrow keys. For example: Select something, doubleClick the Scale tool, click your cursor in the Uniform value field, and tap the up/down arrow keys (or press and hold them). The value will increment and the preview will update with each key tap. (Be sure to teach that to your students.)
That does not, of course, negate the complaint, but it does ameleorate it somewhat. The increments are preset; there are no preference settings for them. (Don't even get me started on preferences that should be doc-specific settings, and vice-versa).
Nor does the valid point that problematic dialogs abound beyond just those associated with the transform tools, but I do agree with it. For just one of many examples, it's nothing short of idiotic that the Scale fields of Transform Each do not have a uniform scaling lock, and that only percentage fields are provided and no explicit dimension fields. Illustrator is quite saturated with such inconsistencies and half-baked implementations.
But...you're often arguing with the emotionally attached Illustrator devoted here. So I wouldn't recommend holding your breath. It would probably be more effective teaching Illustrator's shortcomings to your beginning students. Probably one of the easiest ways to explain the problem of modal dialogs is to point out that you can't change the current selection with the dialog open.

Retaining local axis in Transform Mode (non-Smart object)

Hi guys,
I was wondering if there is any way to track an object's rotation axis something like the difference between Local & Global axes in 3d programs.
I know if I started the transformation as a Smart Objects and keep it as a smart object, it does remember. Is there any other workaround for a non-smart object to retain this information?

There is a big difference between a smart object layer and a raster later. Though a smart object layer seems to behave like a raster layer its operation is very different. The Pixels rendered by Photo do not change they are only acted on. Everything is recorded for the layer each smart object layer has an associated transform. If you transform the layer again you actually adjusting the recorded transform your not making a new one. If you transform a raster layer you wind of with a different layer, Pixels may have been deleted or added you do not have access to the old data except in Photoshop history states till it get deleted. Smart object data is protected and survive even save in a layered document.

Is there a way to modify the style sheet so that it transforms an XML document with empty tags as tag / ?

reindent an XML document. Does anyone know how I can modify the stylesheet to make it so that the transform of an XML file will result in empty tags showing up as <tag /> instead of <tag></tag>?

Or, if there is some other method for reindenting a MSXML2::IXMLDOMDocumentPtr object where I can specify how I want empty tags to be stored, that would be great too. However, I don't want it to lose its status of an MSXML2::IXMLDOMDocumentPtr object.
I.e. I would like to still perform operations on the result as if it was still an MSXML2::IXMLDOMDocumentPtr object.

My formatting gets lost and the message looks unintelligible. After some experimentation, I found that if the message exceeds some length, the formatting is removed. Since I couldn't find any way to delete this post, I made another post with the same subject. I load a PNG in Illustrator. However when it loads it doesn't load right. It loads HUGE. When I try and move it, it says:
"Can't move the objects.The requested transformation would make some objects too large."
I am pulling my hair out here. Why the hell can't Illustrator just open a bloody PNG and allow me to edit it?!

It seems that something is seriously wrong.
You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

How does one remedy this Adobe error message? "Can't scale the objects. The requested transformation would make some objects too small to use." This one always gets me. I'll spend more time trying to find the object in question. This has happened in almost al versions, but this time it's CS5.

Hmm, possible solution would be to select your object(s), scale them to 90%, and then hit Cmd+D or Control+D to repeat the transformation. I read that sometimes if you scale down too much and too fast it can cause this message.

I am trying to make duplicate documents with minor adjustments to each and when I try to copy the artwork from one document and paste it into the new document I keep getting the error "Can't paste the objects. The requested transformation would make some objects fall completely off the drawing area." Both documents are exactly the same size, res, color format etc. I even tried to drag and drop and get the same error message. Anyone know what I can do to resolve this issue?

Try scaling the view size down to 6% or so and then do a Select All. See if there are objects off the artboard which may be causing this error. Most often you will see this if there were guides dragged from a ruler which were selected by dragging the white arrow and then deleted. This leaves the anchor points at the edge of the work area.

What transform engine does the 'transform' method on an xmltype object use?

Does anybody know what transform engine is used when I call the 'transform' method on an xmltype object? I would like to use extension functions within my stylesheets but do not know what functions are available or the syntax for using them. Is there any documentation on this processor?
I am using oracle 9.2.0.7.

I already did the ctrl+A but there is nothing outside my drawing area! It is a quit big file 2GB, but I don't think that this should be a problem! I really hope that somebody can help me?!?
