Retrieve Time Machine deleted backup files

Today Time Machine somehow didn't recognize my computer anymore and started a new full backup - and in order to free up space it deleted older backups. When I found out, it has already deleted ALL the history, and reported to me that there is not enough space. It's a mistake. I need the backup history. Anyone can help? Is there a software that can retrieve/recover those backup files/links made by Time Machine in the past months? Thanks much.

Wanderzhuanyou wrote:
No I couldn't find any clue there. I also searched the web with Google. I don't know what was the reason TM tried a full backup today (it says it needs 1.2TB space while my backup volume has only 600G).
unfortunately, TM has different ways of backing up to directly attached HDs vs. networked drives. my BUs go to a time capsule so i'm a bit on a limb here. however, it definitely looks like TM started a completely new BU. perhaps you should manually remove the latest BU.
then, try deleting this file HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist and restart your machine. next, go > system preferences > time machine > change disk and re-select your drive. start a backup.
what happens ?
Could be I had a IP conflict within my home LAN and the network seemed to reset the name of my iMac to "iMac-2".
this is easily remedied. go > system preferences > shared and edit your computer name back to iMac there. FWIW, this seems to happen when you have ethernet and airport connections going at the same time

  • Time Machine deleting backups from several months ago (but not the oldest)?

During its "Cleanup" phase, Time Machine has recently been deleting backups from several months ago—even though these aren't the oldest backups, and my backup drive isn't full.
My backups go back to January 2012, yet just today, Time Machine deleted backups from May 21, June 11, July 2, and July 23 (all in 2012). And plus, my Time Machine drive still has 200 GB free.
Why's it doing this? Shouldn't it just either delete my backups from January 2012 first (if it needs the space), or just delete the expired backups in the past 24 hours or 30 days (based on its normal rules)?

See Pondini's TM FAQs for starters.

  • Time Machine deletes "unchanged" files at some point?

I am worried with the fate of old files backed up with Time Machine and that are not changed, like old pictures.
I was told that after the first backup, Time Machine works by making links to unchanged files to avoid copying everything not changed.
_My question_: when Time Machine automatically deletes old backups to make save for the new backups - is it possible that these unchanged files (such a specific old pictures file) be also deleted ? In other words, some of _my old pictures might vanish of Time Machine if its file is not changed_?

    Correct.

No. As Malcolm says, Time Machine always has copies of everything currently on your Mac. Every Time Machine backup is, in effect, a full one -- a complete "snapshot" of your entire system.

  • How retrieve Time Machine purple backups?

How retrieve Time Machine backups older than now? Am using Lion (10.7.2). In Time Machine, all my backups that are older than 'Now' have purple date/time stamps and bars, and no 'populated' finder-like window to enable access to my older-than-now backups. My TM backups are on a Drobo S.

    Kadege wrote:
Hello Pondini, I've got the same problem, nearly all dates are purple, older than some days. This moves with the time, some days ago, 25-Dec was available, today it isn't (but 26-Dec is).
Do you mean the Dec 25 backup is no longer shown in the TimeLine at all?  If so, either it's been deleted, or your backups are corrupt.  If you didn't delete it, try to repair your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Or, if you mean the Dec 25 backup is there, but is faded-out and you can't select it, that's because whatever's in your Finder window before you Enter Time Machine wasn't included in that particular backup -- select something else before entering Time Machine, or in the Finder sidebar once you're there.  See #15A in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details, especially the pink box there.
When accessing the Backup on TimeCapsule via Finder directly, I can see the volume (500 GB) has left 19,37 GB free.  I can see, too, all the backups, which are purple in Timemachine, exist (beginnin in July 2011 when I bought the computer).
Yes, eventually, Time Machine will fill all the empty space available to it.  Before that, it will periodically "thin" your backups, per the schedule on the Time Machine Preferences window -- all but the first of the day are deleted after 24 hours; those are kept for a month, then reduced to one per week.
Once the drive gets near full, it will start deleting the oldest backup(s) to make room for new ones.  Since you have your first backups, that hasn't started yet, but probably will before long.
including system-sofware and applications, which I don't backup by Timemachine.
That's usually not a good idea.  It saves relatively little space (perhaps 10-20 GB), and no time (after the first backup), but it means you can't do a full system restore from those backups, or use them with either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to set up a new Mac, or to transfer your stuff if you have to erase or replace your internal HD.  Once you get this sorted out, I'd strongly recommend removing those exclusions.

  • Drive no longer being used by time machine: delete some files?

Tried unlocking and allowing myself to read and write.  Nope.  Tried holding down the option key.  Nope.
This drive is no longer being used by time machine and I want to delete some files on it.
Is there a way to do it without wiping the entire drive?

    nowsthetime wrote:
It wasnt a dedicated backup and  there's other material on it that I need to keep.
That's a problem (as you've discovered).  Time Machine works best if it has it's own, exclusive partition.   See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #3 for details.
Aha!  Just found THIS. I'll post if it works. http://www.celiamania.com/wordpress/?p=1038
That will let you delete individual backups, or all backups of selected items.
If you don't have room to copy the "other" stuff elsewhere while you erase the disk, you can delete the Backups.backupdb folder.  Emptying the trash will take a very long time, and may give you permissions and/or locked file problems.  If so, see #E6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Time Machine Deleted Backup?

I have three hard drives in my mac pro:  two 5 gigs and 1tb for time machine and a few other small files.  Yesterday, both disks went heywire at once and I've spent today trying to restore from time machine.  One hard drive restored successfully, the other one didn't.
The disk that struggled to restore seems dead.  It is going excrutiatingly slow (est. thousands of hours) to restore, or repair with diskwarrior, or even erase.  I have tried repairing and re-erasing the disk.   It seems dead, but  that's ok because I have a backup.
But my backup has just magicly disappeared.  Time machine suddenly has no record of anything before the restore of the first disk.  The hard drive that my backups are on suddenly has 336.63 gigs available.  I see a backup file that seems to have just been made from the HD I restored, but no trace of the backups of the one that failed to restore.  My icon, disk name, and few other files on the time machine disk are still there, so I didn't accidently erase them.  Did Time Machine just delete my entire backup without asking?  Or is there a chance it is hiding somewhere, even though there aren't any places to hide?
    Help.

    giantrats wrote:
But after TM made a new back up, only the later date has been an option.
Doesn't sound good, but still doesn't quite add up.
Time Machine will never delete the last remaining backup, for obvious reasons.
So even if it did a full backup of the restored drive, on that backup it wouldn't have deleted the last remaining backup, so the previous backup of the drive shouldn't have been deleted to make room.
So, something else must have happened.  If, for example, you'd excluded the failed drive from backups, then done other backups, there wouldn't have been previous backups on those, so the older ones might have been deleted.  Seems unlikely, but what you see, and the empty space, would tend to confirm something like that.
First, just to make sure there isn't some sort of directory problem, run Repair Disk on it, if you haven't already.
If that doesn't turn up anything, you may have to try to recover the data, some of which has probably been overwritten.  See Data Recovery.  That probably won't be much fun.
Sorry not to have better news.
You may have learned the hard way (most of us do ), that its; always prudent to keep "secondary" backups.  See the green box in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for some suggestions.

  • Time Machine - Deleted Backups/backupdb

I've searched everywhere but I haven't seen this exact scenario. So, here's the deal: I got a new AirPort Extreme, recently, and was reading online that I could attach my external HDD to it, via USB. I'm thinking, "Great! I can take this thing off my desk, to give me more room." I ejected the XHDD and connected to the APE. I could see it under Devices/Shared, and when double-clicking on it, I could access all my files. (I have other folders on the drive; Movies, iTunes Music, eBooks, etc. Using AirPort Utility, I could not select the drive to use as a Time Machine backup drive. I had been using this XHDD for TM backups, for a while, when connected directly to the iMac. I then read "Sadly, we can't do a Time Machine backup and then move it to the AEBS, so we have to do it this way." So, I deleted the Backups/backupdb folder, and everything in it, so I could then reattach the XHDD to the AE and set it up to work for TM backups. I DID NOT delete my other folders. When the Trash finished emptying the 2.5+ million files, I tried to eject the drive, but got a message saying that it was in use and could not be ejected. I thought it might be performing some residual background task. After about an hour, I tried again to eject - No Joy! So, I rebooted the iMac. Now, the volume won't show up on my desktop and it has been sounding like its working (doing something) for the past couple of hours. I can see the drive in DiskUtility, but there is no volume listed under it. Not sure what I should do to get this thing to mount. I'll worry about the TM issues later -- right now, I just need to access the other folders on the drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do have Data Rescue, as a last resort, I guess...

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    Ouch!
First, you need to know that Time Machine backups via an Airport Extreme are "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Second, Time Machine works best when the backups are in a separate partition. See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If yours had been done that way, you could have simply erased the partition via Disk Utility, in a matter of moments.
I don't know what's wrong with the disk now.
Disconnect it from your Mac. If it has it's own power supply, unplug it or turn it off for a few minutes. Reboot your Mac again, just to be sure everything's cleared, then reconnect it (via a different port, if possible) and power it on.
If that doesn't help, what does Disk Utility show for the *Partition Map Scheme* on it (at the bottom of the window when you select it)?
If it's either +Apple Partition Map+ or GUID, that's correct. If not, that may be at least part of the problem. Does it show the correct *Total Capacity?* What does it have for *Write Status?*
If you have a copy of +Disk Warrior,+ or another 3rd-party heavy duty disk repair app, it might be able to fix it.
Otherwise, yes, you may need +Data Rescue.+ Make sure it's a compatible version.

  • Time Machine Deleted Backups!

The drive died and it was replaced in my macbook. They put Tiger on it which was what came with it. I then installed Snow Leopard so that I could get to my time machine backups. It upgraded the system and created my user account. I plugged in my time machine drive and was asked if I wanted to use this as my time machine backup. I answered yes. All the old backups that I wanted to restore from were deleted! I assume there is no way to get them back. I have all of my data backed up (thanks to Carbonite) I know when I have gone from a computer that already had Leopard or Snow Leopard when you first start up it asks about retrieving a back up from Time Machine. Doing the upgrade this way didn't. Maybe a suggestion to Apple would be to prompt the user that the drive has existing time machine backups on them would be a good idea? So I assume I can't recover those deleted backups and have to install all the apps from scratch.

No, it didn't. Not then, anyway, unless the drive was corrupted and the message included a warning about +*Reformat required.+*
You have a new internal HD, and Time Machine knows that (even if it's name is the same as the old one). Use the procedure in #E3 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, to see if the backups from before the internal HD failed are still there.
If they are, start over. As Thomas says, restore your entire system, per #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • How can I copy Time Machine's backup files?

I recently bought a new external HD for my iMac, a 'LaCie d2 Quadra' with 320GB. I currently have a 'LaCie Brick' of 80GB which I use for Time Machine.
My question is: how can I copy the backup files from the Brick to the Quadra drive; then turn the Quadra into the new Time machine drive and reformat the Brick?
Is this possible, or are my backup files doomed?
Unfortunately I can't keep the Brick (I promised to give it to my sister), so having two Time Machine drives isn't an option.
    Who can help me out?

It is possible as described at
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071128055047339
and read the comments as well.
Also make sure you do think about the difference between backing up (back up of the main hard drive) versus archiving (saving important data, usually off line). With backup, if you delete the data on the main hard drive, it will eventually be gone on the back up as well, when the 'old space' gets reused. You'll get a notification as this starts to happen, but over a long time period when the backup volume starts to fill up, this will happen.
All important files should be archived. Everything should be at least 'backed up.'

  • Time machine deleting backups unnecessarily

My imac is backed up via TM to a locally connected USB disk; it's 2tb in size and has 1.22tb available.
Recently I restored some files from an october backup and have just tried to locate other files backed up at the same time. But Time machine is showing my oldest backups as originating in mid-November. Why has it deleted earlier backups when there is so much space available - I'm only backing up one hd to this set and it only contains 879gb of data? Can I find them or are they gone forever? is there some setting somewhere that is limiting my backups to only one month?

    Thanks Linc
Here is the log from the last TM backup to the first, with roughly 9 hours shutdown.
I don't know if there is anything relevan there - analysing (or even understanding) this is not an expertise that I have. if you can make anything of it I'd be garteful. Don't worry if you'd rather pass - its water under the bridge anyway but I'd just like to know what happened.
I've started another backup using retrospect. It served me well for twenty years before ™ appeared, but it's by no means as straightforward but you're right, I should have two backups.

  • Has time machine deleted my files?

I'm a Windows user and plugged my external hard drive into my friend's MacBook the other day. They speak a different language, and so I didn't understand anything on the Mac.
Anyway, as soon as I plugged it in, the standard "Time Machine" message popped up, asking me if I wanted to back up the Mac files (I can only assume it said that). So I tried pressing No thank you, but obviously made a mistake! I think it started doing something, so I stopped the process.
Now when I plug my hard drive back into my PC, I get the regular "chime" suggesting it has been plugged in, but Windows will no longer recognise it!
I'm not a techno expert, but I have heard MAC use different partitions that cannot be read by Windows. But my question really is: has my data been lost, and is there a way of getting it back?

I'm using root as the lowest level of the directory. In Windows you have to start at "My computer" and then navigate to the external drive vs. Macintosh which will mount the external drive on the desktop. I asked what OS you are running, because if you are running Vista, Time Machine would not merely have asked if you wanted to use the drive as a backup volume, but also that Time Machine would need to re-format the drive in order to use it as the backup volume. Not knowing what flavor of Windows you are using, and you not remembering how you formatted your drive, I can't say whether or not you may have also instructed Time Machine to reformat the drive. At this point, you may want to go back to your friend, turn off time machine in the system preferences and then plug the drive back into his machine. From the Finder (indicated in the upper left corner of the menu bar) hit shiftcommandU on the keyboard and open Disk Utility. Select your drive in the left window and check the format at the bottom of the window. If it is Mac OS Extended, then you instructed Time Machine to re-format and your material was erased. If it is still formated as FAT32 then your files are still there and you can access them from the Mac, and if need be move them to Optical Disc, so that you can re-format the drive on your computer if it still can't see the drive and them move them back. I'm sorry about the trouble.

  • Time Machine deletes old files without notice

Once in a month I intiate the Back Up Now command
Time Machine works about 30 minutes and then anounces it could not backup
Then I see most of my old backups in the Trash. I could not recover them.
There is now 40 Gb space on the external hard disk but it seems not enough
The computer  has about 70 Gb data.
Does it mean htat Time Machine backs up 70 Gb each time I initiate the Back Up Now ?
I also looked into Preferences: it is checked to receive a warning before old backups are deleted
But I did not get a warning.
WHat can I do now ?

    Bomiboll wrote:
I had to trash all the backups. Then I had to empty the Trash or otherwise the external hard disk was still not empty and so TM asked for more space. It was quite time consuming, took more than 2 hours
To trash all the backups, all you have to do is erase the partition -- takes seconds.
But we still don't know what's going on.   Again:
What message did you get when it failed earlier?  Post the messages for that backup from the widget.
How much data is on your Mac, and how large is the backup drive?
Then I made a backup of about 55 Gb and that took another hour.
That's about right for USB2 or FireWire 400.  How is your drive connected?
I would like to make it speedy but how ?
The first backup will take a while, as it copies nearly everything;  subsequently, only additions and changes will be backed-up, so should be fairly quick under normal circumstances -- a few minutes at most.
But if you only back up once a month, it will be much longer, and sometimes Time Machine will do a full backup.  It's designed to back up changes hourly.
Now that I have my backup, I wonder where is the mail app which has mails on My Mac, where is  Reminders and Notes etc. I cant find them on the Backup.
For Mail and Notes, see the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15.
I'm not sure where Reminders are.

  • HT201514 Time Machine deleted backups.backupdb

Did not follow Time Machine procedures to remove backed-up file instead opened Backups.backupdb folder and moved it to trash.  How do I restore?  Backup is on a WD My Book Studio Edition external harddrive procured from the Apple store. PS: I am new to this Aple Support Community

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
Is the Backups.backupdb folder still in the Trash? If so, have you tried to move it back to the external hard drive?

  • Time Machine deleted data files

I just set up time machine with a back up hard drive. When I went to open "Quicken" the data file opened is almost two years old. I cannot locate the latest file anywhere on the computer or back up drive. Any ideas where it could be hiding?

    stheyn wrote:
Thanks for the reply. Time Machine must have deleted the file.
No. It's possible that for some reason Time Machine didn't back it up, but it cannot delete a file from your system.
The last time I saw the file was 1 day before I turned on time machine
I never mess with the data file (Quicken automatically backs up the files - they are all missing since early 2009)
Quicken backs them up? Where? (Obviously I don't use it).
I have tried Spotlight and Finder to look for any newer Quicken type files, with no luck.
I really don't know what happened and the file is probably gone. But, I was hoping somebody has had this issue and found some solution.
Have you looked in the trash?
If you're really sure the file was there yesterday, and it's important, +*Stop using your internal drive immediately+* to stop further loss due to files being overwritten. The longer you use it, the more files will be overwritten and lost forever.
You need specialized +Data Recovery+ software, or a service that performs the function. It's not cheap, and there are no guarantees.
The app mentioned here most often is +Data Rescue 3,+ but I haven't used it myself, so can't recommend it over any of the others.
Some of these have a free "trial mode," that will tell you if there's anything to be recovered, and perhaps recover a single file. For more, you have to pay the $$.
You'll also need another drive to receive anything it can recover.
Look for apps or services under +Data Recovery+ via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.
