Retrieving backed up files?

I am trying to upload backed up files from Time machine but not sure how to access them from the external hard drive now we've erased the macbook to solve a problem?

The drive is readable, i can navigate through the file structure but the problem i am having is that certain folder are locked (little red circle with a line through - icon) and its in one of these folders the images are located.
The user account on the new Mac isn't recognized as the same one that made the backups.  One user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have access to another user's files, including their backups.
For this purpose, your best bet is to use a different user account to access the backups.  If you don't have one, create one via System Prefs > Users & Groups.

Next connect my iphone 4 to the laptop
Does exactly the same with iphone 4 & does the sync at about 4.15pm with another user name #2
Nothing happens. My Computer does not able to detct the iphone 4
Try another 3 times 7 again, no devices detected in iphone 4
Notice that the data in the iphone 3 appears in the iphone 4 (even with different user name)
The itunes detect the iphone 4 but not the computer (no device found)
Use the Restore button several occasions and the last attempt at about 6.55pm and the computer not able to find the iphone 4
Contacted Apple Technical support in Singapore to assist to restore the previous iphone 4 data prior to sync.

Time machine failed in progress as my hard drive failed.  I have an "in progress" file on my external harddrive that is about 160 GB.  I would like to try and load this back onto a new harddrive.  Is this possible?  Migration assistant is not responsive nor does Time Machine recognize the external drive when connected.
No, neither the "Star Wars" display nor Migration Assistant can deal with a partial backup.
And it sounds like the file system was damaged when your internal HD failed.     Try to repair the backups per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
You'll have to try to drag & drop whatever you can from the ".inProgress" package to the corresponding places on your system.  It looks like a file, but is really a special kind of folder.  Right-click it in the Finder and select Show Package Contents.  You'll find a duplicate of the most or all of the folder structure of your Mac.  You'll have some of the actual data, but not all of it.
Skip all the top-level folders except Users. Inside it will be your home folder, containing all the default sub-folders (Desktop, Documents, Pictures, etc.).  You can't copy the whole home folder, or entire default sub-folders, since the ones on your new HD are protected.  But you should be able to copy the contents.
You can copy some "simple" apps (things you just dropped into Applications) from Applications, but "complex" ones (typically the ones that came with their own installers) will have to be reinstalled from their original discs. You'll also have to re-enter any serial numbers or purchase keys.

  • How to retrieve backed up files from my computer

i have voice recordings and pictures that are in my backed up folder on my computer, but my phone is backed up to two days ago.  how do i get those files that are on my computer onto my phone??

the backup that is on my computer is an itunes backup and the files are encrypted.  I can't see what the files are.  This is very frustrating.  When I restore a backup it only does the latest backup.  What do I do if I want a backup from a few months ago that has the files that I am looking for?  What's the point in a backup if you can't get those files?

  • I need some help to create more space on my hard drive-what can I delete?  I have my external G-DRIVE connected as a back up, so i think I'm duplicating a lot of back up files, mostly photos through Lightroom on my Mac HD. Only 9GB left out of 297GB...

Have never had to retrieve backed up files so I think I'm just chicken to delete files on my Mac.  Is everything on my back up if I need it?  Even photos that have been processed in Lightroom?  Could I delete all older photo folders from my Mac and still get them from external drive if I needed them down the road?  I have run a GrandPerspective scan and it appears most of my disk space is used for photo files and back-ups...probably have 30,000-40,000 photos.  Thanks!

Look at getting Onyx, as you have alot of photo's, and so do I. Onyx will help clear somethings from you Mac, all you have to do is run Automation, and or Cleaning. Is that 30,000-40,000 Photo's Duplicates? if so, you might want to delete as many as the those duplicates as possible. i see you use Lightroom, are you useing that to import your images or are you useing something else like Iphoto, or just importing them to your mac. if you are using something else to import your photo's and then reimporting them, this might create duplicates of images. also sometimes when you delete images you dont want, they might not be acctually deleted. so clear you Trash, and run onyx to help clear these things up.
I know there are a few different programs out there that will help clrear out duplicates of items, and help you reduce space.
Duplicate-Annihilator Looks for images in Iphoto that are the same, and allows you to change them or delete them.

TidyUp ($$) Will look for Music, Pictures Documents, or any duplicates.

I backed up files onto an external hard rive form my old PC. Now I want to retrieve the files to put on my mac but it is telling me to format it to Mac. How can I do this without erasing all of the data on my hard drive?

Your drive was used with a PC and formatted NTFS which is proprietary Microsoft format.
You need to install a third party program that will read the NTFS format.
There is various software from PARAGON, Tuxera and NTFS-3G
When you get the data off and have verified it to be good, reformat the drive either HFS+ for Mac use only, or for Mac and PC use then MSDOS (FAT32) for under 4GB files (best) or exFAT (for larger than 4GB files) is proprietary and Microsoft is appling for a patent, which would likely mean OS X won't be allowed to read it anymore without a licensing fee and you'l have to pay another third party software company to read the format, just like NTFS is.
The less you have to rely upon third party sources to read your drives the better, this way if you have a issue and need to read the drive on another machine you don't need the software, and a internet connection and a credit card and...and...and...

  • How do I FTP files from a security camera to iCloud so they can be retrieved back to my MacBook Pro whenever I connect when travelling?

How do I FTP files from a security camera to iCloud so they can be retrieved back to my MacBook Pro whenever I connect when travelling?
    Russ

Do you want to watch the live feed of your secutiry cameras or recorded footage?
In either case, I don't think iCloud is your solution.
For the first one, check with your security camera software, they usually have this option of broadcasting, so you'll know how to access it.
For the later, you should use something like Dropbox (www.dropbox.com), since iCloud file sharing is, up to this date, app restricted.
    Hope it helps.

In 10.7.3, do I have to go back to the prev ver to get my Appleworks files so I can put them in Pages? Do I install Pages before or after I retrieve the old files?

I would get Pages, if it is word processing AW documents, and try to open them without changing the system back to Snow Leopard. You could have Snow Leopar d on an externalhard drive if you really need to have Rosetta and AW.

  • How do I retrieve backed up iweb files onto a brand new Mac book?

Hello all. My Hard Drive died a few weeks ago, but luckily I backed up everything beforehand (we knew it was coming, but didn't have enough cash for a new mac before it died). Now, since I don't have a hard drive to do a migration, how do I go onto Mobile Me and get my backed up files. I saw them, and tried to download the zipped file, which worked fine, but iweb doesn't recognize that they are now on my computer.
What steps did I miss, or what should I do over?
    Thanks,
    Karen

    Karen:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you backup the Domain.sites2 file that was in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder? If so, get it and place it in the iWeb folder on the new Macbook. Launch iWeb and it would find and load your site.
If you don't have a backup copy of the domain file you'll have to rebuild the site from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 of this iWeb FAQ site has tips on using some of the published files in the reconstruction of the site.

  • HT201250 Time Machine can no longer back up files

I was using Time Machine to back up files to a WD Elements hard drive. Lately I started to get error messages the back-up failed. Previously Finder would list back-up files for that drive, but now it only shows empty folders. Get Info still shows 60 GB of used space on the external drive. Can I retrieve those files, or is all lost and I must reformat the hard drive?

I would connect the Time Machine HDD to your Mac and open Disk Utility and select First Aid, Verify the disk and run a Repair if necessary.  If that does not solve the problem, I suspect that the HDD is failing.  Then I suggest transferring the backup data to another HDD, or perhaps just start from square one with a new HDD and back up the entire internal HDD.
    Ciao.

  • How can I back up files onto an external if my hard disk can't be verified?

    Hi all,
My Macbook Pro (2010) hangs up at the grey startup screen. The icon keeps spinning. I believe this may be because the laptop ran out of power during critical software updates. I have been able to reach disk utility by starting up with the original installation cd and holding 'c'. When I verify the disk, I get an error:
"The volume could not be verified completely.
Error: The disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
When I click repair disk, I get the following message:
    "Verify and Repair volume "disk0s2"
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
    Invalid node structure
The volume could not be verified completely.
    Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk.. disk, and restore your backed-up files."
My hard drive isn't fully backed up and I would like to retrieve as many files as possible before reformatting the hard drive.
I have heard of being able to access the hard drive through other means (connecting the drive to another computer and/or another external) and being able to salvage files. What is the best recommendation for this?
    Should I get Diskwarrior?

OK. You need to repartition your drive, I'm afraid, assuming the drive is OK. You have an installer DVD in the optical drive bay so do this:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Upon completion quit Disk Utility and return to the installer. Proceed to install Snow Leopard.
After installing and booting from Snow Leopard you should update it by downloading and instalingl the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. If you wish to you can now upgrade to Lion or later from the App Store.

  • FAQ: Will my Elements 11 software be able to automatically sync and back up files to Revel?

Q: Will my Elements software be able to automatically sync and back up files to Revel?
A: Revel offers easy publishing from Elements to the iOS platform and the web. We look forward to adding more automated features in the future.
Elements 11 is integrated with Revel, so you can share your photos to Revel for access on the web and across your mobile devices.
You can also view "Working with Adobe Revel" on Adobe TV.
With Photoshop Elements 11 you can import photos directly from Revel for editing and creating, and you can share photos from your Elements 11 Organizer to AdobeRevel.com. By Selecting from the File menu "Import from Adobe Revel" or "Export to Adobe Revel"
Just as before, you can share via email or upload your media directly to Facebook, Flickr, YouTube™, and other popular sharing sites and now you can share photos to Adobe Revel. Just click the Adobe Revel icon at the bottom of the list to upload your photos.

Yes all your files are in your Time Machine backup. If you never used Time Machine your files are probably gone for good. Especially if you can't get the system to boot up. It is very hard to retrieve files from a SSD.
Once a Mac reports No Hardware Installed for some piece of built in hardware, like the WiFi card, usually that is caused by the failure of that piece of hardware. The only way to fix that is to replace that piece of hardware.

  • Getting (incrementally) backed up files from external HD to new mac

    Hi everyone,
The hard drive on my ibook died. I was running Tiger, and regularly backed up all the files on my home folder to an external hard drive. I use the software that came with the computer (Backup) to do this.
Yesterday, I purchased a MacBook. When I attach my external hard drive and try to open my backed up files, all I see is one full backup folder and many, many incremental backups. I understand, on a conceptual level, what incremental backups are. But I have no idea how to use them to retrieve my files.
So, my question is this: how do I retrieve files that were backed up to an external hard drive (from my old computer) and transfer them to the internal HD on my new computer? Migration assistant is absolutely no help here since I can't access the internal HD on my old, dead ibook.
    Many thanks for any tips,
    RB

If you used Backup to create the backup, then use it to restore the files.

  • Finding backed up files

I have tried finding a movie file I created. When I search in the Time machine backup file I see I can only find documents, pdfs and jpegs. I can't figure out how to retrieve a movie file from I movie previous version. I read other discussions and they say to go to the house. When I go to the house or movies, it takes me to the current time. I can't seem to enter the back up file contents. Is it possible to access a movie file from time machine? Thanks!

You post is a bit unclear.
You can browse most kinds of files in your backups, via the Time Machine "Star Wars" display, but you can't actually use a backup file. To use it, you must restore it somewhere.
See #15 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If that doesn't help, please clarify exactly what you're trying to do.

  • RETRIEVE OF ETXT FILE STORED IN BLOB

    Hi,
I have a question on utl file. I wrote some text in an utl file (text file) and stored it as blob in data base at back end while my team mate has to retrieve the data stored in blob in front end using java. when he retrieves, the file which i stored as blob is retrieved as html file not as text file i stored initially . when we retrieve a file stored as blob, how a blob file will be retrieved..is it depends on front end programmer or is there any format where a file stored as blob will be retrieved only on that format? Kindly give your expertise on this question

As Billy said, the passing through correct mime type is the only reliable way. If you have already loaded tons of blobs without providing this information, you may try a small workaround to determine the right mime type for your files by emulating the file utility behaviour in the database - you have to load the /etc/mime-magic or something similar for your os into the database and then compare certain bytes of your lobs with those recorded in the mime-magic file. An example how it can be done is here
    http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-9592_11-5219073.html
You could so complete the missing information in the database without to unload your data , but you should be aware - this can not replace the need to provide right mime type information by loading into database.
    Best regards
    Maxim
