Retrieving certain files from previous backup disks

My computer crashed and I ran the Recovery Disks that I created when I first bought it.  This reinstalled Windows 7 to it's factory settings.  I like what I have now but I would like to recover my documents, photos and music from my backup.
I have over 90 disks of backup and the first few seem to have the same files on them.
How do I find my documents, photos and music from the backup disks?  How do I install only those files from the backup?  I don't want the whole backup because I don't want all the stuff that was on the computer before.
Thank you!

Hi christmaslyric,
How do you create the backup disks?
Do you select the option Let Windows Choose or Let me choose?
I have tested in my environment, and I can restore the specific folder like document and music from the backup in my computer.
Due to the lack of the environment like yours, I suggest you to try to restore these folder from the backup disk and let us know the result.
Best regards,

Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups can't even roll back to previous setup

    This is typical Mavericks.
Was the old backup taken from Mavericks install?
Did you already start TM from the new install and thus totally foul up and corrupt your old backup?
You will need to try migrate assistant.. and if that fails you will need to manually pull your files from the old backup if you can still access them.

You can't selectively restore from a back up, you need to restore everything or nothing.

  • Time Machine seems to be deleting files from the backup disk.

My main disk has about 400 GB of data including nearly 300 GB of movie files. Since I started using Time Machine in February, the backup disk has had about 400 GB of data on it. This morning Time Machine has said on the System Preferences display that it is "finishing backup" and in the process the backup disk contains only 108 GB of something - hopefully some of my data. The file structure looks OK on the backup disk but I am not sure that the data is there.
I turned Time Machine off and back on and for awhile it seemed to be moving data to the backup disk but then it went back to the "finishing backup" mode and the amount of data on the backup disk began to decrease again. This evening I turned Time Machine off and left it off but it turned itself back on. Somehow this does not seem right. This has happened a number of times.
The net result is that I have about 400GB of data on the iMac system disk and about 108 GB on the backup disk. What can I do to get out of this trap and start getting valid backup?
For starters I will dismount the backup drive and then disconnect the backup drive and at least I will have something left on the disk.
    Thanks for the help.

Well, I can't really say what the problem is. You could try to repartition (not just erase) the HD and start Time Machine over again.
Or you could check Time Machine's logs in Console.app, and maybe someone else can help you if it's putting out errors (not my area of expertise).

  • Can´t copy files from my backup-disk (usb)

    Hi
I´ve a strange experience with my external USB-Drive. I formated it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled), copied my files onto it and everything worked fine. Now I tried to move some files from this disk back to another, but it does not work. I can´t move any files, even not on the same disk (for example into another folder).
First thing I took care is the Informationfield, but all rights were as they sould be on "read and write".
Strange is: I can read these files (for example I can play a file in Quicktime), and make a copy in the same directory, but I can´t move or copy them into another folder or onto another disk.
Anyone knows about this problem and how to solve it???
    Thanks a lot

Bless you Malcolm. I had been assuming my disks needed repairing and was very dejected when the problems persisted after repair. I learned a lesson - to be more disciplined in naming my files - short and sweet!
Thanks to you I can now copy weeks of hard work to master back up.

  • No permission to access files from previous hard disk

I've just changed to a new hard disk and could not open files saved from old hard disk. Message given when i tried to open those files is that i do not have permission. What can be the problem and what is a possible solution?

If you do a Get Info on the volume, try the "ignore ownership on this volume" item at the bottom. You will have to authenticate by ckicking on the "padlock" before you can change the option.

  • Delete certain files from backup

    Is it possible to:
    1) backup my iPhone (locally with my iTunes on Win7), I CAN DO THIS, of course
    2) delete only certain files from the backup (there are many tools for exploring backup, but I have not found anyone which can also delete certain file, only view and export), I CAN LOCATE THE BACKUP DIRECTORY and see the files, but is it possible to locate those that I'd like to delete and simply erase them?
    3) restore my iPhone with such an altered backup?
    Thank you
    Kamil
PS: I need to delete certain files from var directory, but I do not have root access, so this seems to be the only solution (I do not want to jailbreak and also I do not want to start from zero, I mean to make factory reset and then to set up everything again)

Maybe you should try to install it and try it yourself.
You can edit sql databases (delete some records e.g. from call history), but you cannot delete files in the folders (.jpegs, .plist etc.).
I tried to export only files, that I wanted to recover, then I have made factory reset of my iPhone, made new local backup of the empty reseted device. Then I tried to import to this empty backup those exported files, but it is also not supported. Only files which already exist in the current backup can be imported. It means that you cannot remove or add file into the backup, you can only modify it - with this tool certainly.
Let us try it with another question: is it possible to make selective restore (to restore only certain settings, call history, SMS's, files...,) but not the whole backup?
    Thank you for your effort.

  • How do I retrieve a file from Trash using Time Machine in Mavericks?

Is it even possible to retrieve a file from Trash from a Time Machine backup? Does Time Machine even back up the Trash? I've been told a total restore from a Time Machine backup will put the past Trash back on the Mac, but what if I just want to restore an individual file?
Shortly after emptying my Trash on my Mac (10.9.4) for the first time in weeks, I realized I needed one of the files I'd just erased. Trying to retrieve with Time Machine was not fruitful, however, because I couldn't find the file on any of the past backups using the normal Enter Time Machine interface. However, I know it would have been in the Trash during all of the most recent backups.
So I researched how to find the backups of Trash with Time Machine, but I think all of the solutions I found on various online forums were pre-Mavericks and do not seem to work now. I've basically tried 2 things:
Show Trash in Finder using the Terminal command: open ~/.Trash
It shows the hidden Trash folder in Finder, located in Macintosh HD/Users/User. For easy access, I added the .Trash folder to the Finder Sidebar. But I can't get to it in the backups. The Trash shortcut in the Finder Sidebar is always grayed out in the old backups using the Time Machine app. And it does not show up in ~ when looking through the backups.backupdb folder on my external HD.
I also tried the Terminal command to show all hidden files in Finder: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
But while many hidden files do suddenly appear in Finder, curiously, the User's .Trash folder is not one. This is true for the Finder of the Mac, the backups.backupdb folder on the External HD, and Time Machine app.
    Thanks.

How do I retrieve a file from my backup in Time Capsule?
It depends on the type of file that you are trying to retreive.
    In general.....
Open Time Machine by clicking on the clock icon on the dock
Wait a few minutes for Time Machine to fully load
Use the timeline at the far right of the window to go back in time to a date when the file was still on your Mac
    Click that date
Navigate using the Finder interface to locate the file that you want
Click on the file to highlight it
Click Restore at the lower right of the window to be brought back to the present
You have to retrieve other types of files differently. For details, see:

  • How do I restore files from TM backups with broken links?

I have Time Machine backups with broken links all over the more recent backups.
I get the message "The alias “xxx” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found." whenever I click on one of the links.
I have made the backups on my external usb backup drive before before upgrading my internal disk to a larger one.
Two questions: 1) How can I recover the files?  2) What happened, how can I repair the backup if possible?
The sequence of events was: Made the latest backup.  Apple ran extended diagnostics overnight at the store and did a reinstall of the OS (10.8.2).  I passed on restoring the backup and went to an authorized service center and had them put in a new tera-byte drive.  I deleted (in the star-wars display) the oldest two and a middle backup leaving the Aug, Oct, and latest Nov. backups.
Now I see 100's 1000's of bad links.  If I look at the backup (just look) with finder I can see directories for July and Sept in addition to the ones I didn't delete.
It appears that the files are probably all there and I could recover them a few at a time if I poke around.
I am tempted to do this before trying to repair the disk.  Yes, it will take me ages; but I would rather take the time than a chance at doing -Anything- that could even possibly make things worst.  I can see 3 senarios and wonder if anyone can say what would be best. And by best I mean **Safest**.
    1) Go in TM to the Aug backup that seems to have no (or maybe only a few) broken links and restore that; then move in TM to newer backups and restore one folder or file at a time on top of it.
    2) Do the same thing with a restore of Aug but then use the finder to copy newer files from the backup disk to the new disk.
    3) Do essentially the same thing; but do it all in finder.
Of course that still begs the question of what happened and if the backup can be repaired; but to me, that is secondary to getting the data back.
fyi- I have looked at the TM hints and debug-repair file.  I realize I can try a repair disk but I am tempted to try to get the data 1st unless someone is Sure a repair won't mung the data more.
    Thanks

  • Crash restoring files from client backup

    Folks,
I have a Thecus W5000 running Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials. The Devices tab on the dashboard tells me that it is successfully backing up my computers, but when I fire up the Dashboard from the client PCs (I've tried both my Windows 8.1 work

I wondered initially whether this might be permissions related, since my day-to-day user does not have admin rights, but I've tried logging on using an account that does have admin rights on the local PC (and I obviously have to give domain administrator credentials
to get the dashboard up) with the same result. The only other oddity about my setups is all that all have a G partition that is excluded from the backup, but I don't see how that could be playing into this.
    Cheers, Steve

Same issue with a Windows 7 Client.  Have server 2012r2 Essentials and was also attempting a restore files/folders from a previous backup.  Received the "Restore Files and Folders wizard has stopped working" dialog box.   Running
my Visual Studio Debugger also indicated that MountBackupWizard had failed with an exception as shown below.  Fixing this also  required removing both KB3004375 and KB3023562 from my Windows 7 workstation (not from the server) before the file restore
would work properly.  I was able to confirm that restoring these 2 updates made the problem come back again.
I don't have a support contract with Microsoft and am unwilling to pay the high individual support fee incident cost.  Can anyone else who has a support contract where this wouldn't represent an incremental cost submit an incident so that Microsoft
can get this fixed?  I suspect quite a few people that are expecting to be able to recover single files from their backups may be running or will run into this issue.  There could be significant recovery costs involved.

    Mac Help says:
If you back up to a Time Capsule or network disk:
Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and slide the switch to Off.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Disk Utility
Make sure the Time Capsule or network disk is turned on and available.
Open a Finder window, select your Time Capsule or network disk in the Shared section of the sidebar, and click Connect. If necessary, enter your user name and password.
On the Time Capsule or network disk, select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups. Depending on how your Time Capsule is set up, there may be one or more disks or volumes.
Locate your backup, and drag it to the Disk Utility sidebar. You can identify your backup by looking for your computer’s name in the backup’s filename.

  • How can I remove files from the startup disk

I am getting a screen when I am trying to quit saying   the "MAC OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory"  by closing the windows and removing files from the startup disk will help.
    How do I do this?

That error message is misleading. Your problem is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
In the Activity Monitor application, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the  Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.
