Retrieving contacts from unactivated phone
Hi,
I have an iPhone (not 3G) that a friend has given me. He wants his contacts off the phone but has never synced it with any computer and doesn't want to install iTunes to go through the process and then uninstall. He's moved over to Blackberry because of work. He had firmware 1.1.4. The phone was recognized by my iTunes but I couldn't get the contacts to sync-up so... I upgraded to the latest firmware (2.2.?). Now, of course, it's asking me to activate the phone which I'd like to wait on and just get the contacts off the phone. Is there a way to do that? Can I take the SIM card out and read it with another phone?

No. Iphone does not use SIM for storage.
The iphone is designed to be synced with a computer. It is not stand alone. Syncing is the only way.

In preferences turn on iTunes sharing in iTunes preferences and keep iTunes turned on in both accounts. Or better yet put the iTunes library on the main HD rather than in an account and set the location of the library to that location in iTunes preferences.

I recently started my iCloud and did the backup feature to store contacts from my phone to my iCloud, and no all of a sudden I don't have any numbers saved. How do I retrieve those contacts from before???

Backup files are too big to email. Use FTP, DropBox, etc...

where has his back up data got stored?Your only choice at this point is to restore your iphone. Since it appears from your post that you have never synced to this computer, you of course will not have a backup to restore from. That means your only choice is to restore as a new device & re-sync your itunes content. Unfortunately, all of your contacts, calendars, pics in your camera roll, etc., will be lost. Its not a good idea to use the iphone or any phone for that matter as a storage device, as things like this can & do happen. You should be syncing on a regular basis. The first thing done when you do sync is an iphone backup. You should also transfer pics in your camera roll to a supported application on your computer on a regular basis, much like any digital camera. You can always sync pics back to your phone, but if the only copies are on the phone, you run the risk of losing them.
See if you can force the phone into recovery mode:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, itunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. -
I'm trying to retrieve contacts from iCloud on my new samsung but it says that there is no back up data in my account
If your contacts are on icloud.com, download them as a vCard as explained here: iCloud: Export contact information as a vCard. Then import them to your phone as explained in your manual. If you aren't able to, you can create a Gmail account and import the vCard to Gmail as explained here: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/183711?hl=en, then add the Gmail account to your phone and sync your contacts from Gmail.
If they aren't on icloud.com, I'm not sure how you would access them from a backup on a Samsung, even if there was a backup. -
I used my appleid on my husband's phone. Our contacts merged, both phones ring and he sees my texts. I deleted his contacts from my phone and they deleted from his phone also. How can I get my appleid off his phone and retrieve his contacts?

Bad mistake. You shouldn't have used your Apple ID on his phone. And you made it worse because now the contacts are gone, as you deleted them from your phone, they got deleted on iCloud. Your husband should have his Apple ID.
There is really no way of recovering the deleted contacts unless you backed up using iTunes and even then you will only be able to recover those contacts that were on a call list. Read here:

Help! My whole family shares one apple ID and one of us deleted a large amount of contacts from our phone, not realizing that they would be deleted from all of our devices. Is it at all possible to restore an archive of our contacts? Is there such a thing?
icloud is designed so that only one user uses it to keep his/her devices in sync. Problems such as yours occur when multiple users use the same account - icloud is not designed for that.
If a user is using your account, they should get their own account and disconnect from your account.
To create a new icloud account, go to
http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
Once they have a new account, they should go to Settings>icloud, scroll to bottom of screen and tap Delete Account. This only disconnects the device from that account, no data is lost on icloud. Then enter the account ID that you want to use.
Note that an ID used for iCloud does not have to be the same ID used for iTunes. You can all keep the same iTunes store Apple ID to share purchases, but for iCloud, use different IDs. -
I deleted an e-mail account from my I Phone. Unfortunately it deleted all of the contacts from my phone. Is there a way to restore those contacts?
Add the account back to your phone and enable contacts syncing with the account and the contacts will reappear on your phone. If you want them in iCloud, you'll have to copy them to your iCloud account. If you need assistance doing this, reply back and I'll help you.

Welcome to the Apple community.
You can only restore them from a Computer backup. This has occurred because you are sharing an iCloud account. ideally you should each have your own iCloud account, that way you can each manage your own mail, contacts, calendars, documents etc and avoid unintentional deletions and unwanted editing. If there is information you wish to share between you, this can be done with a secondary account.
Having separate iCloud accounts, doesn't mean you have to have separate iTunes accounts, so whilst you keep your personal data separate, you can continue to share music, apps, books, TV shows, movies etc. -

Is there a way to remove my facebook contacts from my phone contacts list? I had an iphone 4 and it was easy to shut off from teh contacts through the groups link at the top left, but the iphone 5s does not have this feature nor can i figure it out through the settings feature or anything else....HELP please as it is annoying to see all of these contacts!
Hello ymprice91277, let's solve this mystery! To unlink the Facebook contacts go to Settings, Facebook, turn off contacts.

Actually, this is correct.
I didn't write they were not included in the backup, just why they are part of the backup.

HT201318 Using iTunes credit for iCloud storage.
I purchased and added iTunes credit to my daughter's account and then upgraded her iCloud storage without any trouble however, a month later Apple sent an email that they were unable to bill for this month. Her iTunes account has nearly $15 in credit
