Retrieving files from Mac on Ext HD (from Time Machine) on PC
I bought an external HD (Maxtor OneTouch4) and out of the box connected it to my MacBook and used Time Machine to backup my machine. I would like to access files from the hard drive on a PC machine (Windows XP) but Windows does not recognize the hard drive. Is this a formatting issue? Is there a setting that can be changed within Time Machine?

yes.
Is there a setting that can be changed within Time Machine?
no. TM drive as well as the system drive must be formatted mac os extended. windows can't read that format without extra software like MacDrive (not free). even with MacDrive i don't know how well it will be able to deal with TM drives because of the use of hard links and ACLs in TM backups. if you are going to try, DO NOT make ANY changes to the TM backups from windows. you'll likely ruin them.

Time Machine will not let me restore from backups after June, 2013. I can see the files on the external hard drive but Time Machine skips all of them and goes back to June, 2013. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle? -
MacBook Pro i5 with retina will not recognize WD Passport even though I successfully used it to transfer programs and files from my older MacBook ten days ago. It receives power from the USB, but when using Time Machine I receive the message that there is not an external device connected.
If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues. -

Restore from back up does not recognize time machine drive
My wife's hard drive in her 2010 MB Pro decided to give up the ghost a few days ago, so I purchased a new hard drive for her, booted from the Snow Leopard Install disc that came with the computer. However, after the installation is complete, when it gives the option to "Restore from backup", it will not locate the drive with the Time Machine Backups. The drive with the time machine backups is a dedicated 500 Gig Seagate External, that is set up on the network through our Airport Extreme. When I plug the drive directly into the computer, the drive doesn't even show up on the list. When I plug it back into the router it will recognize it as the Time Machine Disk, but will say "Connection Failed" when I try to connect with it. I have watched several youtube videos and read several blogs, and it looks so easy, simply click on "Restore From Backup" and bang! You're in business, but my drive and its backups won't even show up!
After going through with the intitial set up, I can click on the Time Machine Icon, and choose to view other Time Machine disks, and it shows up there, and I can see about two (2) years worth of back ups; however, each time I boot from the install disks, it still doesn't show up in the "Restore from Backup" mode. Migration assistant shows the files, but when I migrated them, it says that I do not have permission to view the files. Also, when I enter the Time Machine it only shows a blue folder with "Macintosh HD" on it, and when I try to simply "Restore" that folder, it will start transfering files for about an hour (Maybe get up to 10-15 Gigs, and then it will say that it cannot replace or over right "Systems", and then stop the transfer.
Thinking that some of the drives were from when we upgraded to Lion, I redownloaded Lion, and it is more of the same.
I am in a really tight spot here, because I have been faithfully using Time Machine Backups, and was told that if a situation like this ever occurred I would be good to go with a new hard drive, or even a new computer. We have about 80 Gigs (not kidding) of family photos on the computer, and those are precious to my wife, so if nothing else I would just like to get those off of the drive.
If anyone could provide me with any tips as to
1) How to make Restore from Backup recognize the drive; or
2) Migrate the files, but actually have permission to view them; or
3) Any other way to Restore from Time Machine that I may be overlooking,
I would greatly appreciate it.Well the first thing you should do is have a local professional image the TimeMachine drive to another drive, then you can install Data Rescue on your computer and use that to read the 1's and 0's of the imaged drive directly and recover any files out of the morrase that is TimeMachine.
TimeMachine is a freaking eyecandy abortion, when it screws up, it screws up royally. However it's easy and better than nothing for computer newbies who tend to delete stuff by accident.
Computer professionals prefer "imaging" or "cloning" which makes a exact duplicate of a drive in every detail and accessability. Carbon Copy Cloner is the choice software for that.
If you not comptuer savvy or want to take a risk, then I'd advise you to get a local PC/Mac data recovery expert to recover your files, they are still on the drive and somewhat accessible, but if you fool around too much TM can delete them as it "copies" your present new boot drive. Then data recovery could cost thousands for platter dissection if the TM drive is overwritten/updated by TM software.
So to be safe, get profesisonal data recovery help, and not the clueless types at the Genius bar.
FYI, once a TM drive has been infected with Lion, you can't use it with SL.
So it's best to stop and get a image, then decide to play with the image or allow the pro's to recover your files before they are really gone forever. -

Connect the two via Firewire cable - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the old iMac into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new iMac normally.
If you are starting the new iMac for the first time then do the above before you turn on the new iMac. After you turn on the new iMac you will begin in the Setup Assistant. When you complete the registration screens you will be offered an opportunity to migrate your data from another Mac. Follow the instructions to migrate your old Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences to the new iMac.
If you have already gone through the Setup Assistant and created an initial admin user account, then you do the connection step but will use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder of the new iMac. -
How do I restore my iPhoto library from my old macbook (stored in time machine) to my new iMac?
I have my old macbook backed up on my time machine. The problem is, when i enter time machine on my new iMac, I can only restore files from the current iMac's backups. I can go to finder, and find my files under the "shared>airport time capsule" menu, but I don't know how to safely and accurately restore the iPhoto library to the current iMac's iPhoto.

This seemed to do the trick. I found the iPhoto library file and chose restore. The question now is where to put the iPhoto library file. -
My mac 10.8 does no have the file, com.apple.desktop. plist I wentto lIbrary, preference and look for it and it is not where in my mac. I also launch time machine and file is no where on my Mac. How do I get this file back?
thanksSystem files are hidden by default in Finder now, search for what you want then click the little + button on the top right of the bar that appears when you do a search. A new bar comes up and click the first box (that says "Kind"), change it to "System Files". Then change the box that says "aren't included" to "are included" and your file should show up.

Do you have the OS 10.6 disk? You can run Disk Utility from that disk and format and partition the new drive.
If you don't have the disk you can buy it from Apple for $20.00

New mac set up problems with time machine
Bought a new 21 inch mac yesterday and going through set up I tried to use my time machine disk at the appropriate point (when it asked me) to copy the data. Now the mac refuses to move on, after it rebooted I get the apple sign and the swirling thing despite a pram reset and booting in safe mode.
Any ideas on how I can force the mac to go back to original settings, it's literally just come out of the box and problems happened at the time machine part on set up.Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key.
That should launch the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
If that doesn't work, startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you will have access to the built in utilities to restore OS X using OS X Recovery.
There is an option to restore from a Time Machine backup using OS X Recovery, but in this case, just restore OS X first. Get your Mac working again before using Time Machine. -
Error 150:30 License Expired. Mac OS X & CS4 and Time Machine

My old Macbook Pro just died and I bought a new Macbook Air. When setting up the Air, I installed everything on the computer from a back up harddrive using Time Machine. Everything on the new computer transfered perfectly except for my Adobe Creative Suite CS4. Everytime I want to open a pdf in Acrobat or an image in Photoshop it give me an Error 150:30 License Expired. I know this license is not expired as I bought full creative suite upfront years ago. It was directly from Adobe and I was sent the package of DVDS. I have since lost the box they came in (****!) and therefore dont have the license number. Is there any other way of looking up this information? ORRRRR is there any way to uninstall and then reinstall from that backup where it won't give me the error message. On one forum I saw that this is a common problem when rebooting a computer from Time Machine, but there was no solution given. Can anyone here give me a better answer? Thank you!Here's the answer. They can provided you remove them from the Exclude list. Normally, Time Machine does not automatically backup external drives.
