Retrieving network password in Keychain Access?

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and moved.
I used to have the password for the new network stored on my Keychain Access. Now, however, when I try to log on, I'm asked for the password.
I went to look for the password in Keychain Access, and there is a password listed, but it's a long string of lower case letters and numbers -- it looks like some sort of code, rather than the original password.
Is there any way I can translate that long string into the real password? Or any way I can restore the old password?
Thanks for any help.

Susan, you will probably by now have done what you said you were to do and set the airport from scratch. Nevertheless there is no harm in setting up the router his sister left. No need to worry about the keychain for this. Clear, that is "reset' to factory defaults as I believe Direwolf was saying. Then start again. Reset by using the button on the back of the router. You then use the default password and admin username (probably on the soleplate of the router). Download user manual from web if need be.
When I look in keychain for wireless passwords, I see plain text, but I use plain text WPA2 passwords, poetry in lower case no spaces no punctuation and 62 characters long. His sister may have set a hexadecimal password. Someone I know keeps changing her ISP (in Spain). I keep re setting the collection of routers she gets from the ISPs with the same settings so she has four 'plug and play' routers in case one fails.

  • Asking for password for keychain access, but won't accept my password... What's up with this?

Restarted my MacBook just now and it's got a continuous stream of pop ups asking for password for keychain access, won't accept my password, won't go away (cancel), any suggestions.

    Hello Al323,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Keychain Access on your Mac.  I found a couple of articles I suggest for the issue you described.
Your keychain uses your the same password as your login password.  If it is not accepting that password, I recommend running the Keychain First Aid using the steps in this article:
Mac OS X 10.6: Solving problems with keychains
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7296
If you are still repeatedly seeing a prompt to enter your Keychain Access password, you may need to reset your keychain.  This will create a new keychain so any saved passwords on the old keychain will not be available, and you will need to enter them when accessing sites for the first time again.  Follow the steps in the article below to create a new keychain:
OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password

  • Delete passwords from keychain access

How to delete passwords from Keychain Access?

In Keychain Access a password is an element in a key, for example an internet site that you log into will be contained in a file in Keychain Access. They are shown one per line.
Inside that key will be the url location, username , password.
You can highlight the relevant key / file  and control click on it and delete it.
Just a cautionary note, if you no longer use it, it does no harrm to just stay there.

My computer continually asks me to enter my password for Keychain access. This problem is continuos and I am having trouble with eliminating it.
I have changed my password through Security and my Accounts numerous times to no avail.
Is there anything I can do other than Resetting the entire computer and re installing all of the software, apps, etc.etc.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ First Aid
There are four checkboxes in the window that opens. Check all of them. if they're not already checked. Close the window.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.
If you use iCloud Keychain, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device.

  • Trouble syncing Wi-Fi network passwords via Keychain

I'm having a few issues getting my iPhone, iPad and my MacBook Pro to correctly sync Wi-Fi network passwords via iCloud Keychain – it's sporadic at the best of times.
I've had this happen in the past and sometimes resetting the keychain (as well as the saved networks on my devices) fixes the issue. However, at present, I do not wish to force a reset as I do not think it should be necessary for the functionality to work.
I recently joined a friend's Wi-Fi network at his home on my iPhone.  Hours later, my iPad (a cellular model) hadn't connected to the network; I had to manually re-enter the details.  Additionally, when I got home, I noticed my MacBook Pro didn't list the network in Keychain Access or the Network pref pane.  All the devices run the either OS X 10.10.2 or iOS 8.1.3.  iCloud Keychain is correctly setup on all three devices, and I can confirm credit card information and logins sync fine – I've just created a new login, and a fake credit card and this propogated to the other two devices.  Deleting it on another correctly removed it from the original on which it was created.
Any ideas here? Can't work out why Safari data syncs, but not Wi-Fi information.

    Hello Brianquery,
I do not know of a Smartprint line of products. Are you referring to the Photosmart or Officejet 5510?
You could use this link to find your printer:
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html
If you locate the product you're using just type airprint in the search field. If it is not found or it is not compatible you should also check for ePrint capabilities.

  • "Show password" in Keychain Access not working

When I launch Keychain Access and tick the "Show password:" checkbox for a given Keychain item I get prompted to enter my password. After doing so the password field remains blank.
Anyone else run into this problem? Know a workaround?

I'm getting something like this but when I click  "Show Password" I get a mumbojumbo of letters and symbols at least 120 characters and clearly not my passworld. Is this something with Maverick, because I've been having a lot of problems.

  • Missing view option passwords in keychain access

When i open keychain access the option to show passwords has gone.
Why and how can i restore it ?
    Thanks Terry

    Hi Linc,
When l open the keychain access box the list headings when l choose passwords are
: Name| Kind | Date Modified | Keychain | and this one used to be passwords but is now blank|
but of course it had a series of dots before where the passwords should be, now there are no dots below.
Then from the drop down list l could opt to ` show passwords' and they would appear, but the heading and the dots are no longer there beneath,
and l don`t have the option to show them from the drop down menu, so it`s not the main password but the option to remind myself what all passwords l chose
are, slightly dissconcerting to say the least.
l hope this isn`t too long winded, l wondered if l had caused this myself somehow or more worryingly someone  or thing else.
    Regards,
    Terry
P.S. l know l can use Safari for the Safari saved passwords but that is not the point, l don`t like my mac hiding personal data from me, it seems odd .
    Thanks again.

  • Trouble with login password in Keychain Access

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, my "Login Password" seems to have changed. Not my account password, thankfully, but the Keychain Access Login Password that enables me to access my Login Keychain. I certainly did not change it, but the password I used in 10.5.8 doesn't work anymore. This has actually happened on two different machines
I tried the 'First Aid' function in Keychain Access and got this error message:
    Checked password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
*Password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain is not the same as login password*, so keychain can't be unlocked automatically
Login password could not be synchronized with keychain ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain (-128)
Unable to read settings for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Okay, so how can the Password for the Login Keychain be different from the, uh, Login Password?!?!
Is there any way to reset a Login Password, or do I just have to start a new one from scratch (really don't want to have to do that)?

the password for any keychain can be set to anything you want. by default the password for you login keychain is set to be the same as you account password but that's done just for your convenience so that it can be unlocked automatically when you log in. those passwords are completely independent otherwise. changing one has no effect on the other. that said, unless you changed the account password or the keychain password yourself what you are seeing should not be happening.
did you change your account password? if not your keychain could be corrupt.
in Keychain Access is your login keychain locked? if it is select it and click on the lock above. if the keychain works ok it should ask you for the keychain password to unlock it. does it work?

  • Can't Get Mail Password From Keychain Access.

My neighbour wanted to be reminded of his Mail password.
So we opened Keychain Access and clicked on his internet password and then clicked the i at the bottom of the window.
A new window opened with "Attributes" at the top and we clicked on the "Show Password" box at the bottom.
A window then opened for his Keychain Password. It was different from mine. Mine simply has a Sancel and an OK button at the bottom.
His had 3 buttons - "Deny", "Allow Once" and "Allow Always". (I am not sure whether I have got those last two exactly right).
When he first got his G5 iMac he did not use a password in the initial setup of the computer and never has had one. So we left it blank (except for the flashing cursor) and pressed the Allow Always button.
It said the wrong password had been entered. We tried again several times using each of the Allow buttons but were refused each time.
As the computer has never had a login password what should we do?
I assume that his keychain access password window looks different from mine because he has an earlier version of Tiger than I do.
    Ian.

    Thanks Matt.
I can't try it now but I suspect it will work.
The big puzzle is why it said the wrong password had been entered when he has no password and we left the box empty.
Four years ago when I too had no password, simply leaving a password request box empty and clicking OK worked.
    Ian.

  • Trying to view WIFI password in Keychain Access and asking for administrator' name and password?

This is the first time this happen and I had never have this problem before when using Keychain Access.
I try using my current password but it doesn't accept.
I try using the Keychain First Aid and it didn't work either.
Note: I had change my login password a 2 weeks ago, but I try using the old password to and and didn't help either.
    My OS 10.9 Maverick.
Any ideas what's happening here and how to fix this problem?

    It's normal.

  • What password is Keychain Access looking for?

I recently opened Keychain Access and attemped to "show password" on one of my iCloud keychain entries. It asked for a password, and I typed my iTunes password, the only password I've ever used during iCloud keychain setup. It rejected this password, so I have no idea what it wants. I then verified that iTunes still accepts the iTunes password I've used for years.
I'm scratching my head here. Any suggestions what Keychain Access might be looking for here?
    Thanks.

I wound up resetting my iCloud keychain. This had more side effects than I'd anticipated (Mail can't log into Gmail, etc.) so I restored the Keychaind dir from Time Machine from a day or two before. After a reboot, Keychain app accepted my login password.
Not sure what was up originally, but all is as it shoudl be now.
    Thanks for all replies.

I cannot retrieve the password for the wifi connection on my imac and so cannot access the internet with my ipad at home.  I have a cable modem. Help please!

If you mean that you cannot remember the password for your WiFi network this will work for you - or it should work if you are the administrator on the Mac.
You will need to be logged in as the administrator on your Mac and you must know the password - Open Keychain Access on your Mac in the utilities folder, click on Passwords. Find the Airport Network Password listed on the right. Double click on it. Click on show password in the the window that pops up. Enter your administrator password when prompted and click allow.
If Keychain is locked - you must enter the administrator password there as well to unlock it and access the password.
If you have set the Mac up for Internet Sharing for the iPad to share the Mac's connection, just create a new network On the Mac with Internet sharing and a new password.

  • Please Help With Keychain Access and Safari Passwords!

    Hello,
I would like to take advantage of the capabilities that Keychain Access has to offer... I like how it can store passwords from websites. I have stored several website passwords in Keychain Access and currently have it set to where it asks for my keychain password when first opening Safari, and then it automatically fills in my passwords that are stored in Keychain Access in the corresponding websites. However, when I close Safari completely, the next time I open Safari it already has my passwords filled in, without asking for my keychain password. The only way I have found to make Safari ask for my keychain password every time it is opened is to select "lock all keychains" in Keychain Access. It is a pain to have to open Keychain Access every time I close Safari in order for Safari to ask for my keychain password again. Is there a more simple way to make Safari ask for my keychain password everytime I open Safari?

Hi, okwildthing. Welcome to the forums!
    Try this:
Open Keychain Access and find "Safari Forms AutoFill" in the list. Double-click it and go to the "Access Control" tab. (You may need to enter your keychain password at this point.) Remove Safari from the "Always allow access by these applications" list. Press "Save Changes."
Does this get Safari to do what you want it to do?

  • ICloud keychain access password

    Hi guys,
Safari is saving passwords both on my iphone and my mac – this iCloud Keychain does work. Cool.
Then design of the website is changing and whatnot and Safari stops entering password for me.
I go to the Keychain Access and trying to see the password.
Keychain Access is asking me for the password for "Local Items" ... hm... ok.
Local admin password does not work, my iCloud password does not work.. what password shall I use to see items stored in my iCloud keychain?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hey there keloin,
It sounds like you are wanting to see what Safari passwords your iCloud Keychain. You should be able to do this in the Safari preferences:
How do I view the passwords stored in my iCloud keychain?
Macs using OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later:
Choose Safari > Preferences, then click Passwords.
Select the website whose password you want to view.
Select the “Show passwords for selected websites” checkbox.
    Enter your system password.
