well, it might be possible but it won't be in any form that you can retrieve automatically. so your first priority should be to get your computer to boot and after what you can start worrying about getting your data from an incomplete TM backup. I've done that it the past and it works sometimes but it really depends on the situation. I had to do it from terminal too as it didn't work from finder.
but it need not be that you lost all data on the main drive. boot from the SL install dvd and see if disk utility sees the drive. if so, repair the drive and try booting from it. if you have disk warrior it might help too if disk utility can not fix some errors.

Can I restore my applications and data from a ML time machine back up to a machine running Lion?

Because of the horrible battery life with Mountain Lion (10.8.2), I am looking to downgrade to Lion. I have a Time Machine backup of my current machine, running ML. I do not want to restore all the way back to my last Lion backup, because that was a while ago. Basically, I want to backup my current ML hard drive, erase the computer, perform a fresh Lion install, and restore my apps/data using the ML Time Machine backup. Is the ML Time Machine backward compatiable with Lion?

I am unaware of any battery life problem with Mountain Lion. There are many problems with incompatible 3rd party software, but that is a different problem.

No. 3rd party application may be fine. Most Apple applications and data will not work.

Setting Up a New Mac From Two Different Time Machine Back-ups?

Greetings Apple People,
I am planning on getting a new iMac. Right now my wife I are still using our separate MacBooks from college. Both of them have Time Machine back-ups. We would like to setup our new iMac to have two different users. Is it possible to setup each of the users on the new iMac from our respective Time Machine back-ups?
I know you can do this seamlessly with one Time Machine back-up, but can you do it from two different back-ups, essentially merging the two, while keeping the separate user profiles?

Follow the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide using one computer as the source on first boot. Then, hook up the second computer and use the Migration Assistant to transfer the second user account and nothing else. Don't use the TM backup because it's much slower doing it that way than directly from each machine.

Having trouble restoring old files from an external Time Machine back-up to a new internal hard drive...HELP!

O.k. So my main hard drive died on my iMac and I had to replace it. I have my old system backed up on my external with Time Machine. How do I access it to get my old files back on my new hard drive? I have read multiple forums and I have yet to find a solution. I was told that when I first turn the computer on and get to the third screen, it would ask me if I wanted to restore from a previous back-up. It did but it didn't show my external until I went through the set-up and got to my home screen. The drive showed then. It also asked to install updates...and I did. So everything is up to date. I have not turned time machine on yet because I'm affraid that if I do, it will erase my old back-up on my external. I tried using the Migration Assistant in Utilities and all I get is the spinning wheel when I tried to get that to work. So now I am here asking for help. I'm not very hopeful that I'm going to be able to get all of my old files back... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the video link. I did it pretty much exactly the way the young man explained. The one thing I didn't do was click "customize" as he does and unclick the multiple language support and he also clicks "rosetta" to support older programs. I wonder if that's the issue? The guys at Macmall told me that I would need to update the o.s. before I restored. I did that originally but have since (as mentioned before) erased the main drive. I noticed that when he does his install, his external drive does not show up on the list in which you want to install the o.s. on... should I unplug my external? I'm just trying to look at ever detail. I know the recovery file is there. The one thing it (the external) did say before I started posting here was "in progress". I'm not sure what that means? I promise I'm not an idiot. I consider myself an above average user. I usually help other that have issues... but I've yet to restore from a Time Machine back-up and I'm looking forward to learning how to do it.... the right way. I appreciate all of the advice. I have some pretty important files on my external back-up. I am really hoping that this is possible. I'm beginning to think the external is where the issue lies. The "in progress" next to the file name concerns me. I know there's a lot of data on the drive because it's nearly half full. So there's stuff there....

Migrate Data from External (non time machine) backup to new HD

I have a late 2007 iMac that HD went bad. Only 51 sectors were bad and I was able to Carbon Copy off 99% of the data onto an external drive. I have gotten a new HD installed and have restored the Lion OS. My question is, How do I migrate all of the data that I was able to save to new system so everything is there? For example, all of my saved emails, Pictures, desktop, etc, etc.

P.S. I tried renaming the Applications and System folders out of the way, starting the new drive at a "T"arget drive on the iMac and then copying those two folders (What would copy) onto the new HD on the iMac ... unfortunately it didn't show any success.

Okay, I have finally completed the task that I set about trying to complete a week ago.
I reformatted the drive s instructed above as one partition of GUID Mac OS Journalled format.
I then wanted to clone my Time Machine back up hard drive to the new hard drive in Disk Utility. When I tried using the restore function, it would copy all the back-up's that had been created using "Backup", but would error out on the first app when copying the time machine backups.
Confused, I then tried Carbon Copy Cloner and it too errored out, but on the third app in the apps folder of the first time machine back up file.
Before giving up I tried to clone the hard drive using Super Duper!
11 hours later I now have a perfectly working cloned hard drive. I redirected my time machines to the new hard drive and it backed up to the correct folder as if nothing had changed. So all is good now and I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice.

PS. I have no idea why DU and CCC errored when copying... but at this point, I don't really care. It worked with Super Duper!

Can i recover lost notes from an old time machine back up?

I found this doom and gloom advice, but isn't there a way to go to an old back up on my time machine and find the file?

Where did you synch them to? If you synced then TO your Mac, you can get them back:
iTunes > Devices > your phone > Info > Notes (check sync notes), Advanced - Replace Info on this iPhone - check Notes. If you had "Replace" checked when you did your last synch, the notes were replaced by whatever had previously been synched to your Mac (nothing?) and are unfortunately permanently lost.

Thank you for your response! I read that their is a product called Wondershare that will recover contacts directly from the phone and that the data is still in there somewhere. This program is $80 and before I purchase, I just want to make sure it will actually recover those contacts.

Restore data from Lion with Time Machine

Help needed!
I am going to buy a new iMac. Currently I am using Lion (10.7.5) and backing up with Time Machine. So the question is: Can I restore the data from the Time Machine to a new iMac with Mountain Lion or do I need to first upgrade Lion to Mountain Lion?

You can restore this Lion Time Machine backup without any problem. During the first startup of the new iMac, it will ask you to restore the backup, so choose the option to restore from an external drive and follow the steps.
You will be able to choose what you want to restore, and as you have newer system apps versions than the ones that the backup has, they won't be replacing, keeping Mac OS X working correctly. Read > http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html

Retrieving calendar and contacts data from OSX Server Time Machine

Due to a system failure I went out an brought a Macbook Air. My other Mac is away being assessed by a repair shop.
By plugging in the Time Machine drive from the other Mac I have managed to recover my files, videos, photos etc. Contacts and Calendars however are proving to to more difficult.
The old Mac was setup using Mavericks Server as a workaround for the removal of Calendar and Contacts iTunes sync in Mavericks.
The Contacts and Calendars are currectly synced with an iPad and an iPhone.
Is there anyway of recovering the Contacts and Calendars data from the Time Machine backup drive, My iPad or iPhone?
Any help appreciated with this complicated problem.

Hard Disk Data lost due to time machine back up

My external WD hard disk initially has my files in it.
After agreeing on the mac to use it as time machine backup for it,
the files got erased.
Any idea if I could get the hard disk data back???/

Help recovering files from an incomplete time machine backup.

I set up a network drive as a time machine backup for my mac and my wife's. As the initial backup was being created, her hard drive crashed!
Most of her drive had been backed up. After some reading I was able to repair the .sparsebundle file which contained the partial backup and mount it. Once mounted there is a .inprogress file which is the partial time machine backup. I can right click and choose "Show Package Contents". This lets me browse the folders backed up folders and see that most or all of her files are there, I have even opened a few office documents and saved a copy.
The problem is that if I try to move any of the files or folders I get Error code - 1426.
I'd rather not have to individually open each document and save as. Is there another way to recover the files? Does anyone know a way to explore the contents of a package in the command line?

try copying the files from terminal.
use the following terminal command
ditto --noacl path/to/sourcedirectory path/to/destinationdirectory
to get a path to a directory you can drag it to the terminal window.
make sure all the spaces in the above command are there.

I am thinking up buying a new 15in MBP. What can be restored from my current Time Machine Back up?

This will be my second MBP, so first time to try migrating.
Can Time Machine restore software like SEE Finance, Microsoft Office, Norton, Adobe Lightroom from my current MBP? Or does it just migrate data.
How do I migrate my iTunes over?

Deleting files from macbook after time machine back up

My macbook's hard drive is almost full so I bought an external hard drive. I used the time machine to back up my hard drive. My intention was to delete some files (photos, video and music) from my macbook to free up space but I read from the FAQs that I am not supposed to do that. How then can I free up space on my macbook's hard drive?

You can delete files from your hard drive to free up space, but within the month those files will also be removed from your TM backup. If you want to save the files you would delete, then you need to save them in some other free storage space, but do not use TM. TM's backups are dynamic and change with the changes on your hard drive. They are not a substitute for permanent storage space.
You might consider partitioning the backup drive and using one of the partitions for TM and the other for permanent storage. Be clear that you should allocate about twice the capacity of your hard drive to the TM partition.

The computer began to freeze/stop working, so I took it to an Apple care centre and they informed that my hard drive has crashed and has to be replaced.
Luckily, I backed up my old hard drive a few days before with an external hard drive using Time Machine. My question is: can I restore this new hard drive with my old time machine backup that is on my external hard drive? If so, how do I do this?

Data Recovery from an encrypted Time Machine HD

Does anyone have eny experience with having data retrieved from a time machine hard drive that is encrypted? I've clean installed Mountain Lion and now can't get at my time machine to restore files.
