Retrospect Revisited - Prove me wrong...

Here are the basics. I have a G5XServe with a 250 gig bay. That bay has one partition, with 5 folders. 3 folders have student home folders (6th grade in one, 7th in another, 8th in another) There is a folder for the faculty home folders and a folder called Stuff, housing student media, clipar etc.
Each folder has its own script. They backup to a 500 gb lacie.
The faculty (30+- users) backs up and restores fine.
The Stuff backus up and restores fine.
The 3 student folders do not. The each have in excess of 250 home folders in them.
I have sent Retrospect DVDs of the whole situation, they can reproduce my problem which is this: I can back up but when I go to restore a file or folder, retrospect goes into the 'Matching' phase and hangs forever on the three sets of student folders. They think it is because there are too many folders/files in each backup set. I sent them this information:

My question is this: Do some of you have back up sets that back up home folders where there are over 200 users? And if so I am assuming that you are doing this successfully?
We have eliminated all hardware issues. This is either something I have done with my Xserve setup - permissions etc or a problem with retrospect.

My advice: find another backup program.
Retrospect is almost certainly choking on the 2007 directory with over 100,000 subdirectories. You've exceeded its capacity.
There are numerous other backup packages that can handle that many directories and files. Off hand I don't know which is best suited to a single backup on a secondary drive, and I don't know what other parameters you have for your backup strategy (e.g. backup to tape, multiple histories, etc.) but NetVault, BRU, and Time Navigator are all worth looking at and (I think) all offer free demo copies.

Graphics render bug in FCP 6 and 7 - Dare to prove me wrong?

I have an issue with an HD video that contains red and purple text and graphics in the edit. I've looked for an answer tirelessly online, with friends, and through trial and error for a good 7 hours before giving up. Here's the deal,
Sequence settings: HD 1440x1080 16:9, 23.98, HDV 1080p24 for editing the canon7d footage that came in - this however doesn't matter because i tested with every setting imaginable including animation raw and ended up with the same results for the graphics problem I'm having (kind of unrelated to the actual footage).
I need to output this 9 minute edit I have to an HD file 1280x720 for youtube upload. So, it has to be under 2gb (youtube's limit) but for client purposes, it needs to be crisp and great looking as you would imagine.
I have a bunch of PSDs, each show a different line drawing of a brush. For each one, the line is a different color. For any of the colors that aren't red or purple, they render crisp and wonderful in final cut pro over top the video. However, the graphics that have the lines that are red or purple, come out pixelated and blurry no matter how i try to render them. The only solution that worked was to render and output them with the animation codec. ProRes HQ worked too but not as well. However, this makes a file way too big. Whenever I went from animation to h264 or from FCP to h264, or any other web friendly format, graphics come out way pixelated. It makes me frustrated as to why all the graphics that were exactly the same except not red or purple came out perfectly crisp. Also, why is animation codec the only codec out there (besides uncompressed obviously) that will create clean edges in these red/purple graphics?
Conclusion: Found that reds and purples are the only colors that seem to be effected when rendering the graphics. Everything else comes out nicely. Animation and pro res codecs aside, any codec making the video small enough for the web (less than 2gb) resulted in the problem of pixelation with the red and purple graphics. Based on extensive research I did online, I was surprised not to find many people posting about the exact same problem. For the issues I did find that seemed related, people concurred that HD nor regular DV video do a good job rendering bright reds or variations of red. Because I found no solutions online or from all the things I tried in the list below
-re-rendered the PSD's in Final cut pro with variation of sequence setting to see if that would make any difference - it didn't. Tried all kinds of different settings in export for h264, keyframes, max quality, etc. no luck.
-tried rendering to "Animation/uncompressed" as far through the process as possible. For instance, I outputted a perfectly crisp "Animation" file that was perfect looking. As soon as I re-exported to h264, mpeg4, or sorenson, or any other codec dropping the file size down, all results returned pixelated results for the reds and purple graphics.
-made sure photoshop settings were all good, even copied and pasted psd into new 1920x1080 project, played with DPI up to 300 to see if it did anything, saved as different formats TIFF, png, eps, layers, flattened, 8-bit, 24-bit, 36-bit, etc., none of the formats worked correctly.
-outputted my own purple and red graphics and text and rendered in final cut to see if the file had anything to do with it. same problem with my red and purple graphics and text.
-Tried adding slight moving grain to the graphic in Final cut to try and trick FCP to thinking it was a video instead of a graphic and therefore render it smoothly.
-consulted with 2 other video editors/media experts, ended up frustrating them as well (and hurting their ego a little since they were sure they could figure it out)
-Ran the shot and graphic through after effects and premiere pro separately (different video programs) to see if final cut pro was causing the problem, same problem with those programs.
-tried rendering on a different mac, still the same.
-Actually upgraded my final cut pro version to the new version (now Final cut studio 3). Ran tests on new version of final cut pro, same exact problem.
-added black edge to purple graphics to see if that did anything different to the rendering. Didn't help
-Changed the hue of the graphic to anything other than red or purple. Wouldn't you know...That fixed it.

In case you'd like to try and find a solution, please download the link to the HD animation half-second clip and output to h264 or any other web friendly codec that would show these red graphics clean and not blurry and pixelated. Other rule is after doing the math, a 9 minute video with the compression you choose would need to be under 2gb. This shouldn't be too much of a problem because even a 1280x720 h264 at max quality for a 9min video is still under 2gb.
The first person to show me that you are truly a FCP guru and can solve this, post a link of your successful solution, I will praise you as genius all over this forum. I will also be eternally grateful. Live in LA? I'll also buy you dinner, Haha. But seriously...

And I doubt whether I can solve this for you, but I can say a few things.

I'll prove you are wrong. Or actually you've already proved yourself wrong in your post:
-Ran the shot and graphic through after effects and premiere pro separately (different video programs) to see if final cut pro was causing the problem, same problem with those programs.
Seams that I try to annoy you, but I'm not. It's not a joke. The fact that other applications can't handle it as well AND the fact that Animation Codec (Which is pretty lostless) does not have this problem, tells you that the problem is likely the low compression you want OR the footage itself. And I dare say it's BOTH.
I downloaded your testfile and have opened it in FCP and I can see in the Vectorscope that your color Red is too hot.

You also see the small boxes (clockwise)
Red, Magenta, Blue, Cyan, Green, Yellow. The signal of your picture should stay somewhere between those boxes. You should read [this article|http://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/lj_scopes.html] (two third on the page) about the vectorscope. Also has a picture with the range to be broadcast safe.
So back to your picture and your vectorscope. You'll see that just along the right side of the R in the vectorscope there's a peak which goes way out of the range. And that's exactly the color of your graphic.
I tried isolating that color, reducing the saturation, and then do an export, but that failed. You should adjust that within the PSD's first and then see how exporting goes.
So now you are thinking: My client wants his own colors! Sure he does. But those colors were probably designed for print, which does have another colorrange. Simple technical story. You're bound to specific saturation. Going over that means troubles....
And I'm not claiming that your problem will be solved when you adjust this. It is still possible that h264 just doesn't like red too much. Maybe that's on purpose. Our eyes are most less sensitive to red, so that gives the compressor some extra room to compress in the reds (Don't know if this is what compression developers do; just thinking out loud, just an idea...)

Bad Apple? Please prove me wrong...

For the last 20 years I have been an Apple advocate. I have had several Macs until my current one, an ibook G3 800, which has served me well for over 3 years. Now it's dead! And Apple thinks it should be!
My issue with Apple is the same as many users in this forum: hardware flaw that makes the display die, both on the LCD and on the VGA external port. Guess what, Apple only accepts responsibility within 3 years. After that, the problem should not occur, or else you should have thrown your laptop in the garbage if it is 3 years old. Any way, it's your problem, not theirs.
I cannot agree with this. It there is a flaw, Apple should correct it. I see no other possibility. Apple if you are listening (these are your forums so you should...) please explain to me why I am wrong. I will gladly hear it.
I have talked with Apple in Portugal, and I have read the discussions here in this forum. All I can say to Apple is that I am terribly sorry for such a customer relations policy. You are loosing the very customers that kept you going this long... if it weren't for us, if it weren't for our devotion to Apple, you would not have survived as a company. So I think it is unacceptable that you treat your faithful customers this way.
I urge you to reply to me and tell me I am wrong. I urge you to fix my problem, and that of many other ibook users that have complained. It is your duty as an innovative and responsible company. Please prove me wrong.

Much easier in ASP than Servlets - prove me wrong..please

Be the judge - is ASP better than servlets in this case?
Here is the ASP/script segment that can take binary image data stored in a buffer and with one simple method - return that data to the browser - such that the image appears in the requesting browser window, simple? in ASP, yes. Servlets? convince me its easier than this.
ASP APPROACH:
'Buff is a simple array of bytes - just assume its prefilled'

This works. I see the image in the browser window that points to this ASP page.
SERVLET APPROACH:

This will not return the image directly back to the browser window. IE doesn't identify the data type coming in...asks you to open or save it, then makes you choose the application to read it - forcing you to open another window...finally you can see the image.
Questions:
A.) Is there a better way to do this using servlets so it will not prompt me to open or save the file? I cannot use IMG SRC and HTML tags - I must only return the image like in ASP. Only needs the image.
B.) Does MS hide implementation for ASP in their browser to make this easier for them?
C.) Am I just a terrible Java programmer? (watch it!)
D.) All of the above.

You can go even further. Program in Visual Basic is much, much simpler than in Java. Why all those "crazy" people are using Java.

The sound on my apple quit. The F3 mute button brought a window with an icon of a speaker, yet the little bips that normally go dark, stay lit, and no sound comes out.
I called your Apple technical support. They said reload the OS-X. The reload stopped and a window came up that said, "Application launch failure. The application "Transplant Monitor" could not be launched because of shared library error "<transport monitor><Transport monitor><Hotsynclib.PPC>". Of course, the tech guys are great, however they are closed, and I've got a looming deadline.
If you can help me get this done, I'll be able to manage the grants we give to teachers across NC and your personal Karma will overflow your own living room and possibly spill into your neighbors yard.

Is that restarting the Mac, or actually reinstalling Mac OS X? Hopefully, you mean restarting.
I would shut it completely off. Then start up from the Mac OS X Installation Disk (insert the disk and hold down C key during start up). At the first Installer screen, go up to the menu and select the command to run Disk Utility. In Disk Utility, run both the Repair Permissions and the Repair routines in the First Aid tab.

Droid Bionic text messages going to wrong people

I have had my Droid Bionic for several months now. It is not rooted and I don't download tons of apps on my phone. I don't use netflix to watch movies or download music. The apps I have are mainly to help me with work. So I'm not app happy just downloading things non stop. This is why I'm confused and irritated. My Bionic has started sending text messages to the wrong people! I had this issue with my Droid X which is why I switched to the Bionic, hoping that after all these years of making smart phones motorola, google and verizon would put a phone out there that actually works like it's supposed to. How much practice do these phone companies need to get their OS right? I don't mind paying a lot of money for something that will make my life a little easier but I get very irritated paying a lot of money for something that doesn't work the way it's supposed to...and at the most inappropriate times. The Bionic has gone from helping to adding to my daily hassles. Is anyone else having issues with text messages going to the wrong people on their Bionics? Have you found a way to fix it? I'm also getting error messages that just started about a week ago...com.motorola.main.service has stopped and then a option to forceclose. The tech support person at Verizon sounded like he had never seen a smart phone before and gave me the Verizon standard technical reply..."do a factory reset". I should not have to reset anything on a NEW Phone! Why don't you fix these problems Google, Motorola and Verizon and in a timely manner?! I know for a fact if I didn't pay for my phone as promised or pay my bill as promised I would suffer the consequences immediately! You cell phone companies are all about getting your money and leaving us customers out here hanging and irritated. If you think my feelings are misguided then feel free to prove me wrong. Go into your settings, Messages and turn on iMessage. It will then send messages that are iMessages to both your iPad and iPhone. You can also turn off this feature on the iPad if you do not want to receive messages on the iPad.

Wrong Time -- 3 mins faster than my iMac

Both my iPad and my newest generation touch are several minutes faster than the iMac they sync with. My nano is is w/in seconds, so that works fine.

Don't know about the iPad, but AFAICT, the current iPod Touch DOES NOT TIME SYNC with either a desktop computer or over Wi-Fi. While this is absolutely absurd, as 1st generation Palms 15 years ago could sync the clock , the new iPod Touch does not. You can only change time manually and then only to the nearest minute; there is no way I know of to set it to the second.
What's worse, despite hours of looking, I can't find an AppStore app that will perform a time sync either. I think Apple refuses to allow a developer access to the internal clock.
I hope someone proves me wrong, but unless Apple fixes this problem or allows others to do it, we will be without this very basic function.

JAVA operator precedence table is wrong.

I can not understand why JAVA auto-increment/decrement operator does not follow the rules of Operator Precedence table at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/operators.html
The precedent order is as follow:
postfix: expr++ expr--
unary: ++expr --expr +expr -expr ~ !
multiplicative: * / %
From the above we know that x++/x-- is higher then ++x/--x and multiplicative is the lower then both.
I tested the following in JAVA:
int y,x = 2;
y = --x * x++;
System.out.println(x); //Output is 1.
Why?
Theoretically, x++ must be performed before --x, finally then the multiplication (*) and the answer should be
x++ value=2, stored variable=3
--x value=2, stored variable=2
Therefore 2 * 2 = 4.
Why JAVA is not following the rules that it setup for itself??
After much research, my conclusion is JAVA Operator Precedence table in java.sun.com website is wrong. The right version should be the same as this website: http://www.sorcon.com/java2/precedence.htm.
Please run your example code in JAVA before you want to prove me wrong.

Hi jsalonen, thank you for your reply. Yes, I see your theory but sorry to say that I don't agree with you. Let's take your example -x++ for our discussion below:
First let's agree with this:
x = 2;
y = -x;
System.out.println("y = " + y); // y = -2
System.out.println("x = " + x); // x = 2
From the above, we can see that by using the negation operator doesn't mean that we have changed the value of x variable. The system just assigns the value of x to the expression but still keeping the value of variable x. That's why we got the output above, agree?
Now, let's evaluate your example:
int y, x = 2;
y = -x++;
System.out.println("y = " + y); // -2
System.out.println("x = " + x); // 3
Hence below is the sequence of process:
1. -x is evaluated first. Value in variable x is assigned to the expression. At this point the value of x is 2 and this value get negated. However the variable x still storing 2.
2. Now x++ get evaluated, since this is a postfix increment operator, the value will get assigned first then increase. However x is already assigned, we can not assign it twice, just like if you perform x++ first, you have assigned x then increase and you didn't assign it again for the negation operator. If you did, x would be 3 and get negated to -3. Note that system also cannot perform 2++ because 2 is not a variable. Therefore it is logical to say that x is assigned to the expression and got negated by negation operator then increase the varaible x by 1. So here we increase the value of x by 1 and the result is 3. Therefore variable x is storing 3.
Now, try the follwing
x = 2;
y = -x + x++;
What is the value of x after -x? It's 2. Remember 2 is assign back to expression but x still retained the original value. If not we would expect x++ to be (-2)++, right?
But see the output for yourself:
System.out.println("y = " + y); // 0
System.out.println("x = " + x); // 3
As for the subexpression theory, sorry to say that I don't agree with you as well. See the expression below:
y = -x + x++;
We can identify that there are 4 operators in this statement, right? (assignment operator, negation operator, addition operator and increment operator)
since JAVA has defined all the operators in the table and already given each of them a priory and associativity, I don't see any subexpression here. If yes why didn't they mention about subexpression rule in the table? Shouldn't that be defined explicitly so that it doesn't confuse people?
In conclusion, I still think that JAVA need to correct the operators precedence table at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/operators.html so that they don't confused people for another 10 years. :) Moreover the table is not complete because it did not include . and [ ] and (params) operators.

Multiple CSV exports from the one button or pl/sql procedure?

I need to have multiple csv exports from the one press of a button. The easiest way I found to do this is it to use javascript to popup three windows, each as a CSV link. This is a bit ugly though, and leaves the browser popup windows open when the file has been downloaded.
I guess I could also make a solution based on branching, but I think that would be difficult to maintain and reeks of bad design (im not a fan of this spagetti GOTO style code!).

However I would like to know if its possible to download more than one file using this method. I could not work out how to do this .
Has anyone got any ideas? Simply repeating the code puts the second table into the original csv file. Is there a way to 'reset' the htp writer or smoething?

Sorry for the confusion - I guess I mean its easy in .NET because you can simply compress files together and then send 1 zip file down as the response. See http://www.developer.com/net/net/article.php/11087_3510026_2 for details.
I guess I could ask how to do this in APEX - but it seems to me that my original wording addresses the concept at a much more abstract level. I may not find the best solution for my problem if I just asked 'how can I dynamically zip together three tables as seperate files and send them to the client?'. I also suspect that this method is not possible in APEX without custom packages. Please prove me wrong!
I guess even if I could find some kind of javascript that didnt open a new window, but was a direct download to the CSV, that would be a good compromise. At the moment when you click on the link, three windows come up and stay blank until the files are ready for downloading. Then after the files have been downloaded the windows must be shut manually. Yes, I could use javascript to make the windows 1x1 pixel perhaps, and then shut them after a predetermined timeframe - but this is hardly an elegant solution!

How to capture user input for customer exit processing?

I need to calculate the number of working days elapsed in the current fiscal quarter BASED on the USER INPUT on the reporting front. i.e., say the fiscal quarter started on 1 July 2005 and if the user enters 10 July 2005, I should get the value 8 (Assume that Monday through Friday are all workdays). If the user enters 12 July 2005, I should get 10. I have written customer exits and know how to use factory calendar, but <b>THE CHALLENGE</b> is how do I <b>CAPTURE</b> the user input and use it in my exit? During the varible definition, if I select the check box "Ready for input" then the customer exit is not being processed and unless I check that box I can't get a user entry! If I look at the import values in the customer exit, I see i_t_var_range with type rrs0_t_var_range. My strong feeling is that this parameter gets the user input, but I am unable to use it as the customer exit is not being called if I make the user to input the data. Based on the empirical evidence, I felt that user input and customer exit can not co-exist!! Please somebody prove me wrong and let me know how can I use the user input to process my "customer-exit" variable. I would really appreciate any input from the BW community here.

In this typical user exit coding you have a user entered value in LOC_VAR_RANGE (originally in I_T_VAR_RANGE) and you construct your user exit variable value in E_T_RANGE.

Z68A-GD65-G3 SLI black screen lock ups

Let me start off by saying I have tried everything and I motivate everyone to prove me wrong and provide me with a solution to this issue.
System spex:
MSI z68A GD65 G3
2600k
Corsair XMS3 1600 16GB
Corsair AX1200
2 - EVGA GTX 580 3GB SLI

I have tried almost every BIOS under the sun, including "standard bios" ie flash back to factory BIOS
So here is the issue:
In order to run SLi I have to be at completely stock settings, if I even up the multiplier to x35 on my CPU I black screen as soon as I bench/game on the cards. If I bench only the CPU (prime95) it is fine and no issues. but again as soon as I loud up something graphics wise the screen goes black and locks up.
It isn't the cards either, each card has been tested on its own and in different PCs in SLi.
It is like the motherboard cant handle the power??????
Someone else has to be overclocking and running two power house cards like this without issues? right? what did they do different? what settings? am I missing something?
Or do I need to contact MSI and get a RMA in process.
Before adding the extra card I had my CPU @ 4.7Ghz and when I would bench it I would take it to 5Ghz+ without a issue... solid, never had a BSOD. but this extra card just kills the systems.
Again everything set to stock and the system runs great I can game on it for hours without issues.

Oh I understand completely and thank you for your suggestion and time, it helps me to believe that it could be my PSU even more, I am borrowing a PSU from a friend and a PSU tester from work and tonight will get a chance to do some full testing on the PSU.
If that tests out ok I will pull my PSU out and RMA it. hopefully Corsair will have a quick turn around.
Virtu isn't installed, I will double check but it was disabled in BIOS, but i have reset my BIOS so many times I will make sure it still is.
I will report back with my findings.

the apex page show me a report and when I press on a value in the report (colum with link), the value must be returned to word and the page shoul be closed.
how can I implement this?
does anybody knows a how to or similar things?

What you need to do may be possible with Javascript but I very much doubt it. I hope someone can prove me wrong.

IF - Else condition is not working properly in Bex Query Designer

Hi All,
I have a KF called KPI Value. Based on the KPI Value, my report display has to show by using the if-else condition. If the KPI value is '999999' then that particular KPI value has to display as 'X' against to that KPI No. Thats all my requirement. To achieve this I have created a formula based on the KF.
(KPI Value == 999999)*(1/0)+(KPI Value <> 999999)*(KPI Value)*1
Unfortunately, the above expression is shwoing the entire colmn as 'X' irrespective of the KPI value. i.e., logic is not working Could any one please suggest how to achieve this requirement. Your assistance is highly appreciable and very helpful. Thank you in advance!!!

I can visualize how condition should give results. The problem here is reality, I tired in my system with your formula and I got like as I mentioned.
If you observe closely your If..else formula, (KPI Value == 999999)*0+(KPI Value <> 999999)*KPI Value
If KPI Value == 999999 Result is 0, Else(Assuming) KPI Value <> 999999 Result is other nos like 1111, 2222 etc.
Actually it is not If..else, it is IF..ENDIF. Both conditions should get satisfied to give below:--
KPI value Formula
9999          X
1111         1111
2222          2222
9999          X
3333          3333
4444          4444
9999           X
In the course of adding both conditions results, system is not able to add 0+ Other Values in single column. So it is giving mixed values * like below:--
KPI value Formula
9999          X
1111           *
2222           *
9999          X
3333           *
4444           *
9999           X
Note: Once again I want to say it is not to prove you wrong. Let's get some clarity on the issue. I might be also wrong. But I want to know the actual result. If you can test it tomorrow and let me know..it would be great.

Podcast Synchronization of Ipod and Hard Drive

Hi,
I'm fairly new to the whole iTunes/iPod thingy, so this question might sound stupid, but what I wanna do is the following:
I've downloaded various podcast episodes of different podcasts to my hard drive. For some podcasts, I want to begin with the first episode and catch up with everything, and so I also downloaded those.
Now, my iPod has only limited memory space left, so I want to have the first episodes on my iPods to listen to them, and then gradually replace them with the next expisodes.
However, the synchronize option doesn't work here at all (or I'm too stupid to use it). And neither do I want to manually put the episodes on my iPod because this would be rather time-consuming.
First, I unticked the more recent episodes (those I don't want to listen to right now) in iTunes on my harddrive and figured, if I then click on sychronize (all), it would transfer all selected episodes. Well, that didn't work. It still put the deselected episodes on my iPod. Then I thought I would select certain podcasts and only synchronize those, but it still put all the deselected episodes for these podcasts on my iPod.
The options like "sychronize newest episodes" and similar ones don't work either.
So, for me, it would appear to be the very simplest solution to have a sychronize option like "synchronize all selected episodes" in the menu but no, there is none like this (I'm using iTunes 7). I have to admit I've only been introduced to the whole Apple / iTunes thingy because I got an iPod as a present and I have already found way too many things that are way too complicated and not practical, so this just seems to be another one of these issues. I would love if someone could prove me wrong and teach me how to accomplish what I described above without having to manually move around episodes every other day.
And another rather confusing thing: initially, I had set iTunes to download the latest episode for a given podcast after a refresh. Then, when I realized I wanted to start with the earlier episodes and save some memory space, I set it so it would do nothing. Now, however, it really does nothing. It doesn't even display when a new episode is available. For example, I had the latest episode of an extensive podcast series and deleted it in my iTunes because it took a lot of memory space. But now I don't even see this episode any longer. I'm sorry, I'm not good at describing problems but what I want is, I want to see a list of all available episodes that will be updated regularly but I don't want the latest episodes to be downloaded automatically.. how in the world can I do that?
Sorry for the long post, I'm just getting a bit frustrated after having spent half a day on trying to figure these seemingly simple issues out

You can delete songs from your iTunes/computer hard drive after transferring them to the iPod, and for this you need to set your iPod to manage the iPod content manually.
However, storing music on your iPod and nowhere else is an extremely risky option because when (and not if) there comes a time to restore your iPod, which is a very common fix for iPod problems, then all the music would be erased. If you no longer have the music in iTunes (or any other back up), then all that music would be lost.
At the very least back up your music to either cd or dvd before deleting it, particularly any purchased music/videos, as this would have to be bought again if it were lost. See this about backing up media.

What if the iPod were lost/stolen/needed repair? Again, the music would lost. I strongly recommend a back up, and if computer hard drive space is in short supply, you should seriously consider an external hard drive. They are not expensive, and the cost is well worth it when compared to the loss of all your precious music.
