Return Minutes for a Time duration

Question

Hi All,
I have a need to return a total number of minutes from a DURATION field. The DURATION field is defined as VARCHAR2(10 Byte) and it displays how long a music track played.
A sample value would be 1:45 (1 minutes and 45 seconds). I need a query that will take that value and return 2 minutes, i need to round up the remainder.
I need to write a query that will return that value in minutes. Has anyone done something like this. I'm not sure if i should change my field type or keep VARCHAR2.
I'm thinking i'll have to take a substr of everything before the colon and take the seconds and round up, adding 1 more minute to my total.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
