Return, Tab, and Delete keys no longer work

I can't recall doing anything recently (software installs, etc.) to cause this to happen, but those three keys just "bonk" when I try to use them with my eMac G4 1.25GHz
I tried plugging an older apple keyboard from a G4 PowerMac into same USB port and others as well with no luck. I have a belkin USB hub, which the keyboard was plugged into and even tried plugging in the keyboard directly to the eMac, with no luck. All other keys work fine. The odd thing is, it is only iCal, Safari, Mail.app, Firefox, not Terminal or Textmate,
I am stumped. Is there some fix for this??
Thanks for any help
Dennis

1. move or delete ~Library/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict
2. Restart
Silly me - you were spot on - 'TextExtras' is something which had been installed, but which I had binned (because I never used it), only I had overlooked the DefaultKeyBinding.dict file (must have misspelt it when searching earlier).
Everything is once again in order. What's more, VirtueDesktops now properly places Mail and Safari in their respective places. (Whereas all I got from restoring my preferences yesterday was that MenuShade back working on all VirtueDesktop spaces, instead of just one.)
So I thank you immensely - I only needed to wander around lost for that bit longer, until crossing your trail of crumbs once more...
Problem solved.

  • I and K keys no longer working on Macbook keyboard

The I and K keys no longer work, it seems. I've restarted, attempted to clean out the keyboard, restarted again, etc. No dice. Sometimes when I push I or K I'll get an odd string of characters--'YIOU' or a bunch of symbols--but mostly I just get no response. I wasn't doing anything unusual when this started and I didn't spill anything on it.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I have heard around the message boards about this kind of problem, and no one seems to know what the problem is. Your best bet is to take it into Apple and they can fix it for you. If you are in warranty, they shouldn't charge you, especially since you didn't spill anything into the keyboard (also a common problem). if you are out of warranty, you're looking at around $90 or so (still better than not being able to finish that email or that final report!). i had my keyboard replaced for a different reason, but the receipt said I would have been charged said amount had I not been under warranty.
    hope that helps!

  • Volume and Eject Keys No Longer Work After Boot Camp 2.1 Update

Earlier this evening I allowed the Apple Software Update app in Windows to update Boot Camp to version 2.1. I allowed the computer to restart following a successful installation of the update. I've restarted two more times since then. Ever since the update (including before the computer restarted for the first time following the update), the volume and eject keys on my keyboard don't work. I also have an Apple Wireless Keyboard (one of the 2003-2007 era white/clear ones) and it exhibits the same problem. Both keyboards otherwise work fine. The computer also otherwise works fine, and there's no evidence of any driver problems.
    Some other potentially relevant information:
1- The Boot Camp icon is no longer present in the Windows System Tray.
2- The Boot Camp Control Panel is still present in the Windows Control Panel and it works fine.
3- All settings in the Boot Camp Control panel are unchanged from their defaults. In particular, I have confirmed that "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is still unchecked.
4- The Windows Device Manager properly recognizes both keyboards as Apple Keyboards.
I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate on an early 2008 MacBook; system specs are in my signature. Any ideas?
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and double-thanks if you can respond with any suggestions!

Ah, the joy of working with computers...:( Apparently, from my woes with the same problem, the Apple Keyboard Manager is rightfully entered into the Run directory in the Windows registry at HKLM/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run.
Why it doesn't start I still have to find out, but this may be because I have Parallels Workstatio installed as well and switch back between a virtualized Windows and a Bootcamp Windows. However, after installing Bootcamp 2.1 first and then SP3 IN THE BOOTCAMP ENVIRONMENT everything seems to work, except the Energy Options taskbar icon and Apple Keyboard Manager.
Will keep you posted on any progress I make.
Apple Support, BTW, was absolutely abysmal, with them even refusing to accept the ticket at all, on the grounds that they have no knowledge about Windows. Apple, get your support fixed!

  • What do you do when you spill water on your key board and some keys no longer work?

I spilt coffee on my key board I few hours ago and just wiped it off. It worked fine when I did that and then I left it for a few hours just on stand by. Now have come back to go on the laptop the key board doesn't work. Only a few of the keys work but because of that I cant get on the laptop because I cant enter my password. What do I do?

Hopefully you havent fryed your machine and I would suggest if your mac boots up ok try pluging a usb keyboard in or a wireless one to it and see if that gets you out of the fix.
I will need cleaning by a profesional though I would imagine
What i suspect has happened is the coffee has dried with the heat of the machine and is blocking the electrical conections through the keys
    Hope this helps

I have installed all new updates and of course my extended warrenty is done any one have this issue and see I just went to back space cause I did not care for the wat way the sentence was going  but NOOOOOOooo backspace

You can restore it, however you would have to perform a complete erase and install of the HD. I would first try resetting your SMC     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964    as well as resetting your PRAM      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

  • Escape, Tab + Caps Key No Longer Work

I recently installed Windows XP SP2 under boot camp. Since then my escape key, the one below it, tab and shift key no longer work in both operating systems. I've had a browse through the forums and seen similar problems but nothing exactly like it. I did spill a small amount of tea on the keys arounfd the same time as the install but I'm sure thats not why they don't work anymore because the light on the shift key lights up on start-up.
    Any suggestions?

Anybody? I've completely cleaned my keyboard so I know its not the tea thing.

  • Return Key no longer works in sql windows or procedure editors.

The <return> key no longer works in my SqlDeveloper editors. Is there an easy fix? I tried resetting the Option for the carriage return but it did not change anything.

So if you go to your shortcut keys (Tools > Preferences > Shortcut Keys) and search for "Enter", what commands are associated with the Enter shortcut? If you have tried remapping the Enter key to something else, it may have removed the standard association with the "Insert New Line" command.
You can reset to the default (which should fix the problem, but lose any custom shortcuts) with More Actions (top right) > Load Keyboard Scheme > Default.

  • How to use the validation work in Both TAB and Mouse keys in Forms6i

    Hi,
I have a validation script once it's validated it should execute the query. But using When-Validate-Item i can't use execute_query.I am able to use the validation in Key-Next-Item trigger but if the user moves the cursor using mouse then it's not working.
How to use the validation script working in Both Scenarios(Tab and Mouse keys).
Can anyone please give inputs to rectify the above issue?.

So you have multiple fields, but on at least one of them if it's valid you immediately want to execute the query?
You could create a hidden field in a control block Query_Now default 'N'. In a WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM on your item, if it's determined to be valid, then set Query_Now to 'Y'.
In a WHEN-NEW-ITEM-INSTANCE at block level, check if Query_Now is 'Y'. If it is then execute the query (and set it back to 'N').

  • Backspace and delete keys not working in LS?

Hi all, I was tutoring a co-worker on the basics of LiveCycle Designer, and ran into a very odd problem.  Neither the backspace nor the delete keys work in the application.  In order to delete text or a cell, she had to resort to using "Cut."
Moreover, when she tried to create a drop-down list, she was not able to click the "+" sign in the object palette in order to add items to it...it was as if the button simply was not there.  I've never seen this issue before.  Anyone know what's going on and if there is a setting to fix this?  I know the keyboard is not damaged because backspace and delete keys work fine in other applications.
    Thanks!
    Windows 7   LS 9.0.0

It's quite possible.  Closing the document and then re-opening it somehow magically reset the keys so that they work now.  Thanks for the response, though!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.
