Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory

this just recently happened to me. i remember changing the name of my hard drive. i didn't think itt would change anything. now i can'tt find anything on my computer. i tried changing it back, but i'm not totally sure if i am getting the name exactly right, because so far, nothing has come back.
i'm sure there's a simple solution, it just scared the **** out of me.
thanks in advance

  • Default profile not working when home directory on Windows server.

    Hi,
    Using 10.6.4.
I have created a default profile (stored in /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj) and this works fine for new local users.
If I bind to AD (Using UNC path from Active Directory to derive network home location) and login as an AD user for the first time the default profile is not applied.
    Has anyone experienced this problem?
    Thanks,
    Dom.

I'm experiencing the same thing, and am wondering if you had any success?

  • Home directory file loss unresolved

I have made that apparently commonplace and disastrous error of trying to rename my home directory on the finder bar, and when I rebooted found that I had lost all documents and user settings. However, all the advice and suggestions on the topic I have found have not worked. I cannot locate any of the original documents or settings under any folders in my users folder, so when I rename these to the original name and login again, I am still not getting anything back. It feels as though all the docs have really gone. It has been automatically creating new folders, so now there are several. Only one has all the different folder categories (music, movies etc., the rest just have a "desktop" folder and a "library" folder. But even on the one with all the folder categories, those subfolders are empty (no sign of their original contents).
I may have complicated the situation after it first occurred (before I read anything) by creating a new user account with a different name, which I then deleted. I am now back to my original username, short name, home directory etc etc., but just no documents or settings. Do I need to do some kind of drastic recovery?
I am in panic-land. Maybe someone can set me straight.
    thanks,
    Barnaby

Hi Barnaby, and a warm welcome to the forums!
No idea what you rea or tried, but renaming them again & deleting ones is not good news at all.

  • Loss of Home

I've been reading the Swithcing to the Mac Missing Manual and last night got to the page where it appeared to suggest dragging the Home icon to the Dock. Poof, up in smoke it went. I rebooted and was back to day one: no preferences, no bookmarks, no iTunes data, no Quicken data, etc.. All vanished. Genius Bar today said that yes, my Home folder is empty and suggested Data Rescue.
In searching here now, I found the "apparent 'loss' of home directory" page which seemed to bring some folders back into the sidebar (iTunes, etc.) , but I tried dragging them to the Home folder and again with the "poof". No sign of them. Also, no preferences, bookmarks, Quicken, etc. Can anyone help a newbie Mac user stumble his way back to contentment? And also explain when click-and-drag actually copies or moves things and when it causes things to vanish?

Open the Users folder on your hard disk, and place the existing home folder in it. If there is currently a folder in Users with that name, rename it before moving the folder you found. In any case, log out and back in after moving the folder.

  • Home Directory Synchronisation and "DS_Store" files

I have five clients on Tiger connected to a Tiger server. All clients are 10.4.8.
Initially I turned Home Synchronising on, but since turned it off, realising I don't really need it. One of the clients, with the biggest profile, still keeps synchronising files. They often get the following message in relation to "DS_Store" files:
You do not have permission to synchronize this file. You can check
your permissions in the Info window in the Finder
    Name: .DS_Store
    Size: 6.15 KB
    Modified: 09/02/2007 10:09 AM
    Location: Documents/Work - laptop/office/folders/.DS_Store
    My questions:
    1. As I haven't apparently turned off Home Sync'ing (via the Workgroup application), what else can I check?
    2. What does a DS_Store file do?
    3. Will it kill something if I delete all the DS_Store files I can find, so they no longer synchronise?
    4. Alternatively, how can I enable DS_Store files to be replicated?
    Thanks,
    Sam

A .DS_Store file is an invisible what controls what you see in every folder/directory. The most imoportant one is the one which controls the Desktop folder in your home directory. The Desktop folder is always open—it's what you see on your desktop when the Finder is running. If you delete the file, for any folder, including the Desktop, it'll be recreated as soon as you reopen the folder or relaunch the Finder, in the case of the Desktop .DS_Store file.
I can't answer your query WRT tp synchronization or servers. You might post the problem to the Servers forum.

  • How to change users home directory home folder name?

Is there a way in Mountain Lion to simply change the name of the home directory home folder name without it throwing off anything else for that particular user?
I read the article about 'Enabling and using the "root" user', but it specifically says for 'Lion' and not 'Mountain Lion'
When I get to step 8 there is no clear place to enter an adminstator account name and password so I can't go any further.
I also did a quick test with a newly created user and after setting some preferences and customizing the desktop, I changed the home directory name and I pretty much lost all my preferences after logging back in. It's as if changing the home directory name in any way shape or form literally wipes out the previous user and you have to start anew.
I don't want to risk changing the home directory name and end up losing essentially my whole user setup, but I really want a different name for my home directory and I don't want anything else to change. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Hi Blastic,
I'm trying to do the same thing.  I did follow Apple's instructions and while they are easy to follow.....I was unable to rename the folder as described  (clicking on it or pressing enter).  I did enable root user, I did log out and re-log in as root user.....and I got stopped.  I simply could not rename the folder as per Apple's instructions and ther is NOTHING on the internet about it......save for your beacon of light!  Thanks for the post.  I'm using 13 inch MacBookPro Mid 2010 2.4 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB ram, OS 10.8

  • Dock returns to default after 10.5.3 update

After updating from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 clients conectet to an OD Directory with remote home directories the dock of all users returns to default. The changes one makes in the dock will not be saved anymore.
We are running 10.5.2 server with newly updatet 10.5.3 clients wich connect to an NFS automount..
Does anyone have the same issuses?

Ok, so I got mine working by deleting my Mail preferences from ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Just move that file to your desktop while Mail is quit. You can always put it back if you like.
The down side is that you lose your accounts and have to set them up again, but all your mailboxes and downloaded emails should be reconnected fine. The preferences file contains the information about the accounts, but not the mail itself.
I tried restoring a backup copy of my preferences file, but as others have mentioned, each time I quit and restart Mail, my accounts were lost again and it asked me to set them up. The only way I found to prevent this was to get move the preferences file aside. Now it quits and restarts without a problem.
Hope that helps. Not ideal, but you can at least get back up and running.

  • Desktop icons are no longer trusted, custom home directory [solved]

I have my home directory on a raid, and have noticed that after switching it the desktop icons no longer work properly (icons are missing/default blank as well and labeled <filename>.desktop. Even if I create a new launcher on the desktop it still won't work.
For example, I click chromium.desktop, and I get the follow message:
    Untrusted application launcher
The application launcher "chromium.desktop" has not been marked as trusted. If you do not know the source of this file, launching it may be unsafe.
Marking it as safe does nothing, launching anyway will work. However, the annoyance of no icons and a <filename>.desktop is rather annoying. If I switch back to my original /home/user$ it works fine again. I even tried binding the raid location to /home/user$ and it still has a problem unless I go back to the original home directory path.
    Any thoughts?

Removing "user" from the fstab line of the raid fixed this.

  • 10.5.8 Finder resets to default, desktop files gone!

The Finder on my 2008 Mac pro is really acting up at the moment an I have no idea what's going on.
My desktop has been wiped clean. Nothing there, except the drive icons. I don't keep much on the desktop but there should be a few folders and files that I always keep there for convenience. Also, Finder has reset to default settings - lost my custom Places from the sidebar and opens in icon view, which I never use.
I looked at the actual folder in Finder as well and the files are definitely not there.
    What I have been doing:
I ran iDefrag on my files disk (INT HD 1TB) a few days ago (first time). I forgot to turn off Time Machine so they have probably been running at the same time.
Today Time Machine decided to backup everything from scratch, which I attribute to iDefrag switching everything around on my Files disk. Also filled the backup disk so I only have two backups at the moment, both from today.
Other than that, I have mostly been using Adobe Bridge, Photoshop and InDesign CS4 for editing quite big files. Also Firefox for normal web browsing.
Hard drives are reported to be ok. Profile is still the same name. The files are not in the Trash. Everything else is where it should be. System disk is 1/3 full. Files HD (which hasn't been affected AFAICS) 1 TB 1/2 full.
Does anyone know what could be happening to my machine?

I had the same problem and finally discovered that somehow my Desktop folder had become a Package. I could not do anything on the desktop but the apps and the dock etc. were working fine. I went to Go/Home Folder/Desktop/Show Package Contents and everything was there. But nothing appeared on the desktop. I could not open a new folder and anything I tried to drag to the desktop resulted in a permissions error. I tried all of the above fixes and more. The solution? Trash the desktop folder from your Home folder, empty the trash, reboot and start all over again. If you're lucky like I was you will have a Time Machine backup and you can restore a previous Desktop easily. Worked for me!

  • Reg: calling default desktop page of enterprise portal from webdynpro java

    hi Experts
Here is an scenario where i need to call enterprise portal desktop from webdynpro java application.
Actually i have designed a custom Home page in  WDJAVA  and this page i have assigned as default  frame work page in enterprise portal ,so once we logon through the portal URL wewill  be getting this custom home page as default page and when i click on next button it should connect to the predefined  SAP given default frame work page.
The thing is i am able to see the custom page and the button but when i click on the button it is opening the same custom home page only not able to log on to portal default frame work page.
My question is how can we connect to the predefined page from the custom home page.
please share your regarding this scenario...

    hi Experts
you didnt get my point  i vl give in brief
    1) that at first we are going to enter the portal URL.
2)we are going give userid and password and click  logon button.
3)so once we click on that button it should open custom page what we have designed in by using web dynpro java.with in this application we will have next button which should connect to the sap given predefined default desktop page.
i hope you have got my point.
and more over where can we get the logon action coding in which par file,if so can you give brief information related to it.
i changed the themes master rule collection there i have assigned this custom home page ,but when i click on next button it is opening the same custom it is not connecting to the default desktop.i think this is not the write approach.
please share your knowledge and document also related to it.
    Thanking you

  • Default Desktop Background

    Hi,
Is there anyway to set a default desktop background through Workgroup Manager? I have created a custom background that i would like to use rather than the standard apple ones.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank You
    Dave

    Hi
When the default desktop background is changed com.apple.desktop.plist is created in the /Users/Home/Library/Preferences folder. If your server is an OD Master which I assume it is, you can save this preference in each user’s network home folder. You could do this from the server itself by copying the image to the server’s Home Pictures folder, defining the server’s background using this image, then copying the .plist to all the users home folders. Next time users log in they will get that setting. This will work with other settings that are not part of the managed preferences options available in WorkGroup Manager.

  • Speakers return to default volume after every song

    Hello,
I just bought a new Toshiba laptop yesterday, and it is equipped with Windows 8.  I have Pandora running on it currently, and whenever a new song begins, the speakers return to some default volume which is too loud for my office.  How do I get
the volume to stay at the level I set it at, even when a new song plays?

I play Pandora all the time in IE11 on Windows 8.1 (right now, in fact).  It doesn't return to default volume after every song here.  I doubt that Pandora's web programming is causing it, at least not directly, or everyone would be seeing
it.  You should not expect it to do so.
Edit:  I play it via the Desktop IE11.  I didn't think to mention it.  Is that how you're running it, or are you using the Metro / Modern interface?  Try it on the desktop if that's not where you're running it and see if the
behavior is different.  Perhaps it's just another problem with the toy interface.

  • On my macbook pro, where is the file for the original default desktop wallpaper? ...and if i replace this will it change the default wallpaper?

Whenever I lock my screen on my mac (by closing the lid) the login screen I see on reopening my computer is a faded version of my desktop image (which is normal, and fine) however when I close my laptop while it's in fullscreen mode (when I'm using a web browser or other application in full screen) the lock screen displays the default desktop image, which is what i'm trying to change. My macbook has always done this.
My computer is running Mac OS X version 10.7.3
I've been looking for a way to change the default wallpaper on my mac, so that when i lock my screen in full screen mode the lock screen displays my selected wallpaper image (the same one as is on my desktop) instead of the default (andromeda galaxy). Can anyone please provide me with the location of the default image file (if it's even accessible) or maybe even provide me with a way to fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi Mr. Wog,
My guess is that once you see an estimate for replacement for hundreds of dollars, those scratches won't look too bad anymore. There are products to cover the outer casing, and some people put stickers on, or even paint (I don't recommend either, but ymmv). Good luck.
