Returned mail messages since ios4 upgrade

Hello!
If this has been answered before, I apologize, but I can't find anything on this particular issue. Since my upgrade to iOS4 (I have a 3G 8g iPhone), I have been getting returned mail messages in my AOL inbox from addresses that I have not sent mail to. I have read mail from these places, but not Sent mail. Just last night my aunt sent me a few emails, and said she was getting weird emails back with number codes in them. Does this new upgrade send some type of automatic receipt once you read an email? Is there a way to turn that off? I can't find any info on this at all. Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks!!!

Well, I haven't figured out how it happened, because I only use my phone to check my mail anymore, but somehow my AOL away message was turned on and spam info (pharmacy info) was entered in the data box. So every email that was sent to me received this info back over the last 2 days. I have since turned off the away message, but don't know how it was activated to begin with. I guess it was more an AOL/SPAM issue than having to do with the upgrade....I hope.

    Under Settings->Messages->Send & Receive
    1) is your Apple ID listed there?
    2)  Under "You can be reached..." is your phone number appearing at the top of the list and does it have a checkmark next to it?
    3) Under "Start New Conversation From" is the checkmark next to your phone number?

I've recently started getting returned mail messages for emails I did not send. Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

That might be tough to do. Is there a rule I can use to help. The mail messages are so varied.
I'd look at the headers (View -> Message -> Long Headers) to see if there's anything in common, then try to create a rule based on that.
By the way, welcome to Apple's discussion groups.

  • Iphone not pushing/pulling mail since iOS4 upgrade

I have an iphone 3GS and before I upgraded the operating system to iOS4, I had my phone set to automatically pull my mail to my phone. Now, since I upgraded, the phone will not pull my mail. I can click the refresh button, but it will just show connecting and never pull anything. The only way I can make it pull messages is to power the phone down and power back up. Is there anyone who is having this same problem since the upgrade?

I have found a way to fix this problem. All of the email accounts that you had before the upgrade will have to be deleted and re-added to your phone. That the only way I could get it back to normal.

  • 1000's of Returned Mail messages every day!

    Hi All,
I am receiving thousands of Returned Mail and Undeliverable Mail messages every day in my Mail application.
    Here is the problem description:
I used to have a MobileMe (.mac) account and a corresponding email address.  I did not renew my MobileMe account this year.  Now, whenever Mail receives any valid message to my existing RoadRunner email address, that same message is being automatically resent to the defunct .mac email address and since it is no longer a valid address, it is being returned to my inbox as Undeliverable or Returned.  The same message is being resent apparently many many times for each valid message I receive in my inbox.  The result is literally thousands of undeliverable email messages clogging my account.  Each time it is resent, it copies all the headers and the original message so by the time the same message is received over and over again the message sizes are well over 2 MB in size!  It is an endless repeating cycle.
What I have done so far:
Called RoadRunner - they said to delete and reinstall Mail
    Deleted Mail and reinstalled
    Deleted Mail preferences
    Turned off all iSync functions
Searched for and deleted all references to the invalid .mac email address on my computer
Turned off all notifications from iCal
Upgraded OS from 10.5.x to 10.6.7
None of this has stopped the torrents of messages…PLEASE HELP.
Would not like to have to erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS from scratch if possible.

Are the returned messages showing all different recipients? If so, it's possible someone has hacked into your MobileMe account and is using it to send out spam.
A brute force spamming will result in thousands of failed return messages. That happens when a spammer sends out mail to a know mail server, such as Hot Mail. They'll send the same message to [email protected], [email protected], etc. Do this for thousands of addresses and many will be returned by the receiving server as undeliverable because there is no user on their system by [email protected], and any other address with no match.
Or, your address is simply being spoofed by a prolific spammer. They picked up your email address as a valid address and are spoofing it in the From field. Doesn't matter that the thousands of emails that went out from them with your name as the sender didn't come from you, the receiving server just assumes it did and you get the bounce messages.
For the first, go in and change your password and see if that stops the flow. For the latter, there's really nothing you can do. Spammers will only use someone's address for a short while. Otherwise, the "from" address gets blacklisted automatically by mail servers, which would cut off the spammer's ability to send out more crap in your name. Then it's someone else who has to put up with it for a few days.

  • Can't see the text of any e-mail received after ios4 upgrade

I can see some text whent it is listed, but i can't see it when I open the e-mail. Can anybody help me?
    Message was edited by: Mapidufol

This just happened to me this morning during my commute. I read about 10 of my e-mails fine, but when I went to the next unread e-mail, the body of the e-mail was blank. I changed the preview to five lines and could see some of the text in the preview, but when I opened the e-mails, the body and subject lines are blank. It's been weeks since I upgraded to iOS4, so I don't know if it's related or not.
When I get home tonight, I might try resetting the iPhone.

  • Mail messages missing after upgrade to 10.4.3

Short story: I upgraded a Mac from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 and now none of my old received mail messages are in my inbox.
Long story: Installed Tiger using "Archive and install". Repaired permissions. Installed the combo updater to 10.4.3 using software update. Repaired permissions again. After the system was upgraded to 10.4.3 I opened mail. It said it was importing messages. However, when it was done, there were only 6 messages from the last few days. The other 400 or so messages that had been in mail (in the inbox) in the previous version were not in the mailbox. I tried rebuilding the mailbox. This resulted in losing all of these 6 messages. I tried importing from the old account mailbox and mail re-created the mailbox structure, again with only 6 messages in the inbox.
I have tried re-importing my inbox which is listed as 18.2 mb in size but I get a dialog box that says there are no valid mail messages to be imported. I have tried importing messages from my backup disk, a backup created before the 10.4.3 upgrade but it gives me the same “no valid messages to be imported.” I have tried rebooting but there are still only 6 messages in the inbox to be seen.
Of note, the sent mail box is full of messages and appears to have been upgraded appropriately.
The application mail and all associated mailboxes etc are in their default locations. I have not moved or modified any of the locations of files.
Any ideas on what happened and more importantly how to restore or otherwise make visible all of my mail messages?
    Thanks,
    Pete

Hi Ernie! I really appreciate your assistance. Are you ready for this? I had 13 POP accounts... Here is the current info on the files on my Mac (upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 last night)

    - mbox (128 KB)
    - Messages (Folder contains 13 "emix" files, 148 KB)
    - tableofcontents (4 KB)
When I compare the above INBOX.mbox files to the 13 POP account folders in my pre-upgrade Retrospect Backup, the files sizes match, but the difference is there are no "Messages" folders in the backup - I assume these are folders/files Tiger built (and screwed up) during my first launch/import of the Upgraded Mail.
Thanks again for looking at this.

  • Strange 3GS behaviour since iOS4 upgrade

I've searched through the posts here, and can't find reference to the various issues I've experienced since the upgrade 2 days ago:
    1. Most of the time, in email, text or Safari, the phone does not toggle back to portrait mode once it gets to landscape (who said there's no lock for landscape mode...anyone want to trade phones?). The only way to get it back is to turn the things off and on a few times (turning it 360 degrees or shaking the heck out of it sure doesn't work). This is VERY annoying and has never happened before.
    2. I regularly get a password prompt from home wifi, but then the [CORRECT] password is not accepted. Wifi works perfectly everywhere else, and on the Mac Book, but only about half the time at home. It used to work fine. Anyone else seen this issue?
    3. This is one many others seem to have experienced, but the phone & applications run very S-L-O-W & sluggish. It takes noticeably longer to do a lot of things.

it will definitely improve your wallpaper resolution.
as to everything else, i'm not too sure.
i did not notice this kind of degradation you're talking
about on my 3GS or any difference after re-syncing the photos.

  • Mail Issues since maverick upgrade

Since upgrading to Mavericks I have been having the several issues with Mail. The are as follows:
Scrolling is available intermittently or not working at all (using Magic Mouse)
Problem: Scrolling works for a while when using mail, then stops working. I have to click on the side bar to go up and down on all scroll screction within mail. This issue only resolves when quitting Mail, and sometimes will only work again when shutting down and restarting my iMac.
Scrolling on folders withing the main body of my iMac also stop working from time to time and only resolves when force quitting finder, or restarting my mac (or somethime shutting down and restarting the mac).
Email address pull down menu does not close down
Problem: When typing an new email and selecting an outgoing address the pull down menu appears, but once an address is chosen using the mouse curser the pull down menu remains on screen and does not close down automatically. I can not close it with teh mouse curser and have to use the keyboard (return or tab buttins) to close down the drop down address menu. It used to close down prior to Maverick upgrade. The pull down menu remains on screen blocking access to the CC and Subject sections.
Saving Mail attachments to desktop folders does not work.
Problem: Saving attachements from mail does not work at all using the drop down menu within mail. The process of using the save attachments menu within mail seems to work, but when you go to the folder after using this process, the item or items have not been saved.
Click and drag is the only way to move attahcements from mail to desktop folders now.
Mail will not quit automatically when shutting down Imac
Problem: When shutting down my iMac, mail will no longer quit automatically and prevents the shut down. Once shut down has been selected, Mail will no longer quit and I have to use Force Quite to shut it down.
Would welcome suggestions on how to resolve these issue.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Purple route line in Google Maps continually disappears since iOS4 upgrade

Since upgrading to iOS4, I've noticed that the purple route line in Google Maps disappears while I'm following a route. I'm not to the destination but suddenly the purple line is gone. Touching the screen usually restores the route. Anyone else have this problem? Suggestions to correct it? I had it in both 4.0 and 4.0.1. Where can I report this? I'll post this a MacRumor with a few pics.

I am having the same problem, and it happened when I upgraded to 4. Just bought a new iPhone 4 (currently running 4.2) and still the same problem.

  • I keep getting a "Not enough storage to back-up my device" message since I upgraded to the new software. Short of purchasing more memory, and deleting some content, are there any other options?

What are my options for increasing storage capacity besides purchasing more memory, or deleting existing content. The new software install used up much of my storage capacity and the message is driving me crazy. Any ideas?? Thanks!

There are two kinds of storage messages that appewr on iOS devices. Your question seems at odds with your description so there might be some confusion here.
If the storage refers to not enough for an icloud back up then you need to purchase more icloud space or turn off iCloud backup. You can backup using iTunes on your computer with paying for additional iCloud storage.
if the storage refers to that on your iOS device as in there is not enough storage to update, then you have two options and neither option involves adding more storage since the amount of storage on an iOS devoce is fixed. One option is to delete stuff from your device to free up more space. The second option is to complete the update while your devoce is connected to your computer running the latest version of iTunes. When you do that the update is downloaded to your computer and extracted there so it doesn't require as much free space on your iOS device.

    Hello Ezyk
There are some things that you can check through Mail, the following article will assist with troubleshooting and getting your email back up and running. The big one to use is Connection Doctor, it will tell you why it cannot connect and get mail.
