Returning a Macbook Pro 15.4 to original shipment status

I am getting ready to send my grandfather my old Macbook pro. Although It would be simple enough to try to educate him how to insert the DVD, hold the C key and follow along, I was wondering if its possible to return the hard disk to the same status that it was when I bought it, with a clean install that simply needs to be powered on and boots into the intital configuration and installation? Thanks in advance.

I find the simplest way to do it is the following…
1) Boot of the Installation DVD 1.
2) Use Disk utility to erase and write zeros to the drive \[optional].
3) Do a standard software install (Erase and install if you did not previously use DU).
4) After the software on DVD 2 is installed and you have gotten to the "Welcome" animation do an Command-Q. At some point you will be offered and option to Shutdown. Select it and then it's as good as new
5) Test it by booting and you should get the "welcome" animation again. Command-Q again to get out and shutdown.

  • Can i return my macbook pro that i got early september for an imac?

i was wondering if i can return my macbook pro that i got about 4 months ago and pay the restocking fee for a 24" aluminum imac. can someone answer my question please

    Good Morning,
I'm afraid you have gone beyond the standard return policy and thus will not be able to return the product for a refund.
For more information, please visit the [Apple Return Policy|http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID ?nnmm=browse&mco=735D05D9&node=help/returns_refund] webpage.
    Hope this helps! 

  • Can i return my macbook pro after 5 months

can i return my macbook pro after 5 months

If you bought it direct from Apple, you have 14 days to return it for a full refund or toward the purchase of a different model.
After that time, if it is broken it can be repaired. If it does not suit your needs and cannot be upgraded to suit your needs, you recourse is to convert it to CASH by selling it, and apply the cash toward a computer that better suits your needs.

  • How to install an SSD in a MacBook Pro and keep the original hard drive

Step by step instructions on how to install a Crucial SSD as the primary drive in a MacBook Pro and use the original hard drive as a second drive in place of the optical drive.
Apart from the time needed to back up your data and clone the original drive to the new SSD, you should be able complete this in less than an hour.

    Verifying
Install the SSD in the HDD slot
Install the HDD in the optical slot
Boot to the HDD and format the SSD
Boot using Command R and restore the operating system from Time machine to the SSD

  • Macbook Pro Return for Macbook Pro Retina Display

I wanted to know if I can still return my Macbook Pro which I purchased in May 2012 and receive the Retina Display Pro as an exchange.  It sounds like a stretch but the employees at the store said nothing of new product development to me which is pretty deceiving.  I'm still well within the warranty limits for both technical support and the 1 year warranty.  Whether or not it's a yes or no answer, does anyone have any information on this type of exchange or know of it happening successfully?

No, you won't be able to exchange your computer. The Retina display was not announced until June 11, 2012, so there was nothing deceptive going on. While Apple has a reuse and recycle program, you're likely to get less than $1,000 for your computer through that program. Your best best would be to sell your old machine on eBay and put the money towards a Retina display model, if that's what you want.
    Good luck,

I'm kind of thinking that your best option to try is calling apple. I wonder if the stores are really equipped to handle this type of return. As Kappy stated, since this is such an unusual request you best option is try (and post your results here )

How do you restore a MacBook Pro back to the original out of the box state

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

  • Help.  I have to return my MacBook Pro to my employer, & I don't have a new one yet!

I have a 17" MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3) issued to me as an employee. I have to return it. At some point, I will buy a new one.  Should I buy an external harddrive to transfer everything?  If so, how big should it be?  Will my applications (ie. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc.) transfer too?  A little panicked. Please advise.  Thank you.

Wouldn't it be better to just worry about saving copies of your documents, then, when you get your new computer, doing a fresh install of your apps from the installer discs? This would give you a solid, clean start on your new computer, and prevent transferring corrupt apps to your new machine.
Keep in mind that many Adobe apps, such as Photoshop and Dreamweaver, register themselves to the original computer, and need to be deactivated on the original machine before you install them on the new machine.

  • Can I return my Macbook Pro and get a refund?

I bought my Macbook Pro 2 weeks ago (July 16th). I bought it with the student discount, and they also gave me a 100 dollar gift card to the Apple Store. I would like to return my macbook and get a refund however, because I see that a new macbook pro came out. It has better specs and costs the same price. What the heck! Anyways, can I return this laptop and then buy the new one?

The return period is 14 days.
You are very close to that now.
If you really want to do that get down to theApple Store fast and you might still be able to do it.
Personally with the difference between the two models, I don't see it as that big of a deal to get the newer model.

  • How can I restore my Macbook Pro to it's original operating system?

I am giving my old Macbook Pro to my mother in law and want to restore it back to factory settings. It was originally OSX6 but has been upgraded to OSX 10.8.3. When I try to use the disk that came with it, I get a message that I cannot use that version. Can I reset it to factory settings (wipe out all of my information) while still keeping the latest version of the OS? If not, is there a way to use the disk to restore it back to OSX 6?
    Thank you,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
OS X Mountain Lion is registered to your Apple and it can only be reinstalled using your Apple ID, so you shouldn't give it to your mother-in-law with Mountain Lion or she will have problems. Instead, reinstall the original Mac OS X version which came with your Mac, in your case, Snow Leopard.
To restore your Mac to factory settings:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your computer is starting to start from the DVD.
    2. Choose your language, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility, choose the hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall Mac OS X.
When the installation finishes, hold the trackpad while your computer is starting to eject the DVD and turn off the computer, so your mother-in-law will be able to set up the computer as she wants. After setting it up, open  > Software Update and install the most recent version, and use the Applications DVD to install iLife apps

  • Just returned 2nd Macbook Pro because of cosmetic flaws!

So I just returned my 2nd Macbook Pro that I ordered online because of cosmetic flaws. The first one I returned because it had a nice ding/chip on the left edge, and I just returned the replacement because when I opened it there was this gluey/sticky residue below the track pad and a mark on the screen. I don't know what the **** is going on at Apple's factories these days, but there is a serious issue with quality control somewhere along the line. I'll never order online through the Apple store again, it's such a drawn out process for returning things.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I know that any mass produced product is going to have defects along the way, but 2 $2000 laptops in a row?!

It happens. I returned my first two BTO MBPs also. First one had a warped lid, and the second had a badly damaged bezel. Fortunately, I have four Apple Stores within five miles, so it wasn't too hard to get tea and sympathy.
If I were you, I might call Customer Relations (call the main support line and ask for them) and very calmly, very politely explain your frustration. They may be able to help restore your confidence....

  • Returning exchanged MacBook Pro battery - do I just send it by post office?

Thank you Apple for sending me a new MacBook Pro battery so quickly. I have now packaged the old battery and followed the instructions in the box to replace the front label with the Apple ship-to thing. It's been lying around since the 11th August and I ought to return my old battery.
Now here comes the dilemma - nowhere does it say where I need to bring the box to.
    Do I:
    a) Simply bring it to a post office which accepts packages?
    b) Have to call a company up (UPS??) to arrange collection?
    c) Have to call up Apple to arrange return?
    d) Something else altogether?
I am in Coventry, England, United Kingdom - and the return address is Apple Computer Int, c/o BAX Global Logistics B.V. Trekpot 1, 4825 BM BREDA in the Netherlands, and the box has a UPS Express Saver tracking number.

You simply have to contact UPS for a collection. They'll come and pick it up for free - or at Apple's cost, at least..
I think you don't have an account number for UPS - on their UK page, they say:
"For non account holders, please call 08457 877 877 to schedule a collection."
Remember that - according to the instructions in the shipping box - you have to return your battery within 10 business days... Otherwise you might have to pay for it.
