Returning files in trash file to original location

Trash contains a huge number of files. They have not been deleted
through the TRash Delete function.
I want to know how I can return these files to their original location
without moving each file by a manual approach. Does OSX preserve the original location when the file is put in the Trash bin?
thank you
Bil

Welcome to Apple Discussions Bil.
Does OSX preserve the original location when the file is put in the Trash bin?
No, only so for the most recently trashed file can you undo that move.
One of the small(?) annoyances of people used to Windows is the absence of the the Restore function in Mac's Trash, as they expect it to be like window's Recycle bin.
Unfortunately it is not a recycle bin but a trash can, so you cannot automatically undelete a trashed file (apart from the most recent one).
There is one suggestion to create a special folder to put your doubtful files in before your decide to trash them, though that still does not give you the ability to return them automatically to whence from.
You had better get them out of the trash if you want them, lest you lose them, but regrettable you'll have to replace them back manually - or reinstall the application might be easier if that is applicable.
Sorry there is no solution to your problem.

  • I have os x 10.9.3. How can I return files I have in trash to their original location?

I was trying to clean up my Time Machine so I put several files from TM to the Trash Bin. Now I see that it is almost impossible to empty the trash bin because of "locked Files". So now I am trying to just return the files from the trash bin to TM.

Again thank you for your replies.
This time I did what you suggested with the 3 key click and I did see the "secure erase" option. I got the box indicating that it was preparing to empty the trash. It was counting up the info it was going to delete but then after a couple of minutes it just quit and the box disappeared. Very frustrating to say the least. I tried several times but same result.
I then went to each individual file using "Info" and I changed the Read only permission for everyone. It was already on Read-Write for Admin but I thought maybe by chance it was not recognizing me as admin. I tried the secure erase again but same results. Now it does not even give me a "locked files" msg. It just stops counting and disappears.
Bottom line still unable to either empty the trash bin or return the files back to TM. BTW I still don't see the "put back" option.
Thanks again for trying to help me.
OK I just tried something else. I put an old .dmg file into the trash then attempted the 'secure empty" option. It started counting items to delete and then after a couple of minutes and aroung 130k items it stopped and disappeared. I went back to the trash bin and the 2 .dmg files were gone. So definitely my problem is connected to the TM files as I suspected. Got to figure out what is preventing me from either getting rid of those files or putting them back.

  • Importing to iTunes, does it move the file or play from its original location?

Say I import music files from an external HD and place them on my desktop. Once I import them to itunes to play them does it make a copy and move the file to iTunes folder? That being said, after importing do I have duplicates of each file? Can I go ahead and delete them off the desktop? Does iPhoto work this way as well?

    Hello ,
    For iTunes :
Created a copy of the files in iTunes folder .
But before you delete the files from the desktop ,
    I suggest you check .
Finder > music > iTunes > iTunes Media
    For iPhoto :
I do not use this software so I do not know but
I can assume it's the same thing as iTunes .

  • Can´t edit or trash files on my NAS – (Error code -36)

I have all my files on a NAS. I have got a problem - I can´t trash any of the files via finder (tried Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.5). When I try I get this message: "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “FILENAME” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)"
I can change name on files, I can open, but not edit. I can put new files on the share and make copies, but can´t trash och edit files. I have searched for a solution but haven´t found anything that works.
I can via the nas own Web file Manager trash files but not from finder.
If I open an rtf-file, it says that it is locked in the titlearea, but its not locked if I shows "info" on that file in finder.
I can download any file of the nas to edit in the mac but not as long as it´s on the nas-share...
    Please help... I´m geeting desperate...

    Update:
I have found what makes the problem appear, If I configure the Qnap to not "Enable Network Recycle Bin", then everything works, but when activated same problem. I have tried everything with access rights, but nothing solves the problem when Network Recycle Bin is activated. This is strange because before I reformated the drive to begin from scratch this worked…
Update 2: A new firmware 3.6.0 was released today - Installed it and it fixed the problem!

  • I established a new profile in Firefox but it doesn't seem to have either a spam file or a trash file.

I deleted one message, but when I went to resurrect it, there was no trash file. Then I noticed there was also no spam file.

Firefox has no spam file or trash file, those are email features and Firefox has no email features.
Email accessed through Firefox will be web based email, any any features will be part of the email service that you are using and not of Firefox.

  • Saving to original location

I have been helping some friends switch over to Mac. One of the most common questions is "why doesn't it save back to where I opened the file from, like on the pc?"
Does anyone know how to make files save back to their original location? Thanks. -dr

First off, behavior with a network may be different than using and saving files on your local drives, since I'm not on a network, I can't check that. However, behavior for local files should be just what everyone has said: it will save to wherever you opened the file.
Thus, I just launched TextEdit, it created a new file, and I hit Save--the location that appeared was the last folder I had saved something to. Closed the file, opened one in the Documents folder, hit "Save as" and the location was the Documents folder. Closed the file, opened a file from a folder on a different drive, buried 4 steps deep on that drive, hit "Save as" and the location was the folder the original file is in. I then opened a file on my iDisk, in the Sites folder, hit "Save as" and the default location was again just what I expected: the Sites folder on the iDisk. AFAIK this is the default behavior for all applications that use the standard Apple suite for Save and Save as. However, as has been pointed out, applications don't HAVE to do this, they can write their system for default behavior, and some do. There are applications that have in their preference the ability to set a default folder of the user's choice to automatically offer as a first choice.
Also, you can often use the drop down menu next to the name of the suggested folder in the Save or Save As sheet to select a different spot in hierarchy, or a different folder from the "Recent Places" which appears after the hierarchy listing. Furthermore, you can drag 'n drop any folder you have open in the Finder into the navigation pane to start from there in the Save sheet.
Finally, if you want to open the folder your file came from in Finder, just hold the Command key and click on the title in the title bar of the open file. You'll get the path list for the file, click on any item in the path to open that in Finder.

  • How do I restore files to their original location from the trash bin?

I accidentally deleted a large number of files. I was trying to delete a certain type of file from a specific folder, but ended up deleting all of the files of that type from the computer and, worse, from the external hard drive docked on my desktop. We are talking about 6000+ files. I could not in five years manually copy these files back into their original locations. I deleted additional files after this before I realized what was happening, so I've used up my one undo. Is there no way in Mac OS X to automatically restore these files back to their original locations? It's worth noting that I have not emptied the trash bin; the files are all still there, and this is a brand new computer, so Time Machine hasn't been configured (even if it had been, the external hard drive I would have used for back up is the one I would need to be restoring these files to). You would think something like spotlight, so proficient at finding the file types I was looking for, would also be able to put them back to their original locations.

That is a feature available in Windows but not on you Mac. Your only slender hope is Undo, but it only has one go, and you say you've used it.
If the task of relocating them seems impossible, and you say the machine is brand new, then the quickest thing would be to reinstall the OS and start again, as you would not have personalised/changed it much, so soon.

  • Delete file from original location and when copied size of file increases.

    hi !
I have 2 exe's both of 1.15MB which I want to move to another folder. The files are copied to the folder but the size of exe increases to around 350MB each. What can be the problem ?
    BufferedOutputStream bos=new BufferedOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(filename));
    int o=bis.read();
    do{bos.write(o);}while (o!=-1);
    boolean del=this.fpara.delete();
System.out.println(del);          Also, the file is not deleted from the original location even though I have used the delete function. The last line produces null output.

    And do follow coding conventions

If your original source is all jammed up like the snippet you posted, I'm not surprosed that you can't spot your mistakes.

  • Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original location - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it

Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original locations - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it - also, when transferring large amounts of files it becomes a very large problem remembering which files were transferred and which not.

You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them.

  • How can I return files in Trash, more than 1 at a time? I can place many files into Trash at a time.

I placed many unix.exe files into Trash, more than one at a time. I recently updated 'QuickTime' and the Mac version of 'SilverLight"
(name might be totally 'correct). I don't know if removing these files can impede my iMac 2008 running OS 10.6.8(updated SnowLeopard).
I know I can 'return' one file from Trash at a time. When I try to return more than one ('mouse click' and 'drag'
over 2 or more files, the'return' option isn't listed. Is there a way I can either 'return all' or return more than one file
    at a time?

Only one at a time. But where are they from? Did you delete system files or are these Windows files (.exe is a Windows extension?)

  • How can i restore system recovery files to their original location? (HP Pavillion p6540F desktop)

I have a HP Pavillion P6540F desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium. A few days ago a problem occured with windows which basically wiped out my OS and I had to restore my computer to factory settings. Before restoring my computer I backed up all of my files to a disk. Upon reinstalling windows I placed the disk with all of my recovery files on it into my computer and ran the recovery .exe file which began the download of my files. This all worked perfectly fine but the problem is that these files only saved to a file on my desktop and did not restore to their original locations. Is there any way to get these files to restore to the correct locations on my computer without having to manually drag the folders to their former locations? Honestly I do not know where many of these files were located before the restore, and many items such as preferences for certain programs are impossible for me to relocate. Thanks for the help.
    This question was solved.

The backup used in Recovery only restores the files to a folder, leaving the owner to move them.I agree, not the most helpful backup app but better than nothing I suppose.

Originally, I thought it was due to 800+ files in the trash, however, I removed all but 5 photo files from the trash and it continues to lock up.  Inititally the "progress" bar would get to about 1/2 way and then it would stop and stall.  However, now the progress bar no longer shows a progress line it immediately freezes and locks up. Can anyone help?

You may have damaged the library - Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • I have moved the mobilesync backup file as my C: is full. Whenever I delete the old mobilesync file and connect a device, iTunes rebuilds mobilesync in its original location. Can I stop this?

My C drive is full so I moved the MobileSync back up file to another drive using "junction". Problem is now that iTunes rebuilds MobileSync backup file in its original location on C drive. Any ideas how I can stop this?

i also just move my library to a NAS. i suggest you do this:
launch iTunes and point iTunes media folder location to the volume/shared folder on NAS. quit iTunes.
copy the iTunes folder from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music to the NAS.
launch iTunes while holding option (⌥) and click on choose library when prompted. select the iTunes folder you just moved to the NAS.
you must make sure the volume/shared folder on the NAS is mounted on your desktop before launching iTunes but from now on the media folder location should stick (it does for me).

  • Deleted mail does not go to trash file and returns to inbox

I'm running OS 10.6.2 and Mail 4.2. When I delete mail on my MacBook PRO, the message goes away, but doesn't go into my trash file. When I refresh mail, the deleted messages come back. I'm using exchange server, and I have no problems deleting mail from my iPhone or web mail. In addition, I have other mail accounts that allow me to delete mail without any other issues. I've rebuilt my mail database (mailbx - rebuild), and even deleted the mail account and reloaded it from exchange. HELP!

In that case, if the account in question is an admin account, you would just tack "sudo" on at the beginning:
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
If the affected account is not an admin account, you need to log in to an admin account and do this:
    sudo rm -rf /Users/theusername/.Trash
...where "theusername" should be the name of the user folder with the broken trash.

  • How to restore files from Trash

    Hi all,
Somehow there does not seem to be a "restore button" in my trash. I can copy my files manually from the trash to another folder, but I will have to remember which folder that was. How can I restore the file to it's original location automatically?
I could swear that the restore button was once there. Or am I confusing OS X with XP?
    Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards, Hans.

If you press COMMAND-Z (Undo) immediately after placing a file into the Trash, then the file will be returned to its original location. However, the undo function is only applicable to the item most immediately placed in the Trash, otherwise it will not work, nor will it work for items placed there previously. In effect it's a one-time deal.
There are some third-party utilities that may add more to the undo Trash functionality, and you can look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
