Returning to Tiger

For almost half a year I am trying to stabilize my Leopard upgrade installation. I have problems with picture transfer in Nikon applications, color management in Nikon and Adobe applications, system freeze after going into Sleep, etc. After having well too many problems I intend to back off and return to Tiger.
Any suggestions how could I do it safely, without losing my data. BTW, I have Time Machine backups.

As long as you have a current TM backup you're good to go. I'd recommend doing an Archive and Install with the Tiger DVD. You should be able to access files on the TM drive from Tiger, as it's formatted to HFS+ and should behave just like an attached external volume. However, the Archive and Install method of installing Tiger should preserve the locations of files in your home directory.

  • Can I "test" Leopard w/my bootable FW drive and still return to Tiger?

    With some talk of problems with some software not yet working well with Leopard (and my income dependent on one PowerBook G4), I'd like to live with a copy of Leopard I've been able to boot from a firewire drive to see how things go.
    My question is, if I find some major problem I can't get around (unable to use a critical piece of software, for example) can I simply again boot off of Tiger on my internal HD and go back to normal, or will just using my documents, etc. with Leopard "upgrade" any files/structures/settings that won't allow me to then go back and use them in Tiger again?
    Any other advice on doing a test like this would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Bob Mcinnis;
    You should not have any problems with your plan. It sounds like a wise method to try Leopard.

  • Issues after returning from Leopard to Tiger, icons and iworld apps!

    Hi
    After headaches with Leopard i decided enough is enough and returned to Tiger to finish producing a music project.
    I did erased teh drive 7 times pass, re installed Tiger and now it does hting i never seen before.
    After several hours te icons get all fuzzy, some times i see the last application in the side bar as the icons for music, photos etc, even the drives look like iTunes or whatever app i last used.
    Side bar also does not show hard drives at times yet they are on the desk top.
    at some point its all nothing but the desktop, applications folders etc, not hard drives at all.
    please advise anyone.

    From your cell it is very expensive when you wait 25 minutes, i think all 902 are charge by the minute.,
    The irony of Spain is that stores now use a 902 number to charge if you ask whats in sock as well! while the average person makes 1000€ and the costs of eveyrthing electronic is not converted from Dollars!
    a $1500 mac a is 1500€ which really is 2000€, no tax breaks from shipping to another state, there are no other states but countries!

  • Os-X Tiger DVD unreadable

    I replaced the original CD-RW with a new Lite-on DVDRW SHW-160P6S drive. Works great. I have read CD, DVD, written DVD and successfully tested burned DVDs on another computer. It works with Finder, iTune & Toast.
    But I bought OS-X tiger and I can't install the DVD. My Mac will not boot it (even starting while holding 'C' down during boot). If I boot the current version the Tiger DVD will not even mount the DVD, so that I can manually install.
    I returned the Tiger DVD assuming that it was defective. But I see the same problem on the new version.
    Reading the help I see a PROM update but it says it's only for the Apple Superdrive.
    If I load this prom update and it fails can I unload a PROM update?
    My current boot prom is 4.2.8f1 .
    I can boot from CD using the install CD from a previous version.
    I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestion!

  • Getting Tiger back from Leopard

    Hi, I've just bought a new G5 Imac 2.4Ghz with a view to running Pro Tools for music production. I realise that Pro Tools is currently not compatible with Leopard and so was planning to revert it back to Tiger ASAP. This seems to be harder than anticipated due to the fact that no drop in disk was provided with the computer. According to Apple the computer was originally shipped with Tiger and has been upgraded along the way so presumably I should be able to get Tiger back! Anyone any ideas on how I can go about doing this?
    Cheers
    Rik

    Hi rik_g;
    Since the generic Tiger DVD is PPC only you can't use that to get Tiger on you Intel iMac. This leaves you as the only alternative to use the hardware specific Tiger DVD for the 2.4 GHz Intel iMac. I think it is going to be extremely difficult to find them.
    Why pray tell do you wish to return to tiger?

  • Revert to Tiger

    I just received my new computer - Leopard is not working for me at all. I mainly do music and even Apple's own program - Logic, is happier on Tiger, not to mention most of my other music software. Is there any way to gracefully return to Tiger on this computer? Remember, this computer came pre-installed with Leopard so it has never run Tiger. I do have a Super Duper copy of my previous computer which was a G5 running OS X 10.4.11. Is it possible to start up using my original computer, make this Quad-core the Target , format it, and then restore this drive with my G5? I would lose the last 3 days worth of work but at this point, it would be so worth it! Any help? Thanks.

    First problem is that there are known issues of music software not working with Leopard. As I said, everything from Apple's own Logic to Native Instruments to Spectrasonics. I've read posts in many different forums specifically documenting this. Second problem - I hate spotlight and time machine. I can turn Time MAchine off but Spotlight is built wrong. I have many firewire drives as well as internal hard drives with lots of data. I don't want or need Spotlight to analyze everything I have. I don't always have the same drives attached, I also attach other drives when transferring in projects - this creates havoc with Spotlight. So, you suggest turning Privacy on - what if I want to search for something that hasn't been indexed? Won't work - it only works with drives that have been indexed. I like the old method much better. But, still by far the most important issue is the fact that it is not compatible with a lot of music software that I use daily. I'm sorry I didn't ask about that before I purchased the computer.
    Like I said, back to my G5 and when Leopard fixes it's spots, I'll return for round 2.

  • Leopard killed my mini... HELP!  :_(

    After many years of faithful service, I decided to give my mini (intel solo) a well deserved upgrade. I got Leopard from the Apple Store, installed, upgraded to the latest version (10.5.4), played with it throughout the weekend, and then, as I sat to watch a movie... it just sized up!
    Frozen. Nothing will work. Oh well, nothing I hadn't seen before. Forced restart should sort it out.. Nope, frozen on the grey Apple screen... Lets have a look at Disk Repair from the DVD... Starts OK, runs OK, no repairs needed on the disk. Hmmm. Repair permissions... Nothing wrong there either, all permissions OK.
    Restart Mini... same grey screen...
    OK, so let's re-install Leopard, I've got plenty disk space...
    Anyhow, after almost 3 hours, I decided to go to bed. It should finish overnight, after all, it says it has only 4 minutes left, even if it has said it for the last 30 min... give it time...
    This morning, six hours later... still had 4 minutes to go. Installer FROZEN!
    Now I don't have enough space left to re-install (only 2GB left).
    So here come the questions:
    1/ How can I set the Mini to Disk-Mode in order to free more space and/or copy some of my files? (I had pretty much everything backed up before I did the upgrade, but I was silly enough to but a few films from the iTunes shop; these weren't backed up...)
    2/ I have two 500GB Iomega external firewire disks, so I thought I should be able to install Leopard in one of these and then access the mini's HD... The installer didn't allow me to do so, and asked to partition one as GIU-something... anyhow, as the two are identical (one is permanently mirrored into the other) I decided to erase one to install this new partition... but I couldn't find the option to install this particular kind of partition...
    3/ If my mini ever goes back to life... should I go back to Tiger, keep to 10.5.0, or risk fate and go back to 10.5.4?
    THANKS!

    To answer your last question first, there are many people running Leopard quite happily on all varieties of Mac mini (and indeed far older systems) so there's nothing wrong with installing it again, and no reason to be reticent to do so if you like the features Leopard offers. It is worth saying however that if you were happy with Tiger, and liked the feature set of MacOS 10.4, Leopard doesn't really offer much in the way of enhancements, yet does typically require more RAM to run comfortably, particularly if you run multiple applications at the same time. If your Core Solo has 512Mb RAM and you run a lot of applications at once, or a number of old non-native software, you'd be better either increasing RAM to 1Gb or maxing out to 2, or returning to Tiger.
    My guess is that when you installed Leopard, you performed the standard 'upgrade' install, and if so, that may well be the root cause of the problems you've had. This update path has created problems for many users, often the result of issues pre-existing on the system and which were largely hidden.
    To back up the files on your mini before reinstalling, you can put it into Firewire target disk mode by holding 'T' down while booting while it is connected with a firewire cable to another Mac. That will mount it on the other Mac as an external drive and allow you to move files on and off it as with any other type of external.
    What you then need to do is to reboot the mini with the installer (whether your existing Tiger or new Leopard installer is up to you) and then from the 'custom' install types, select 'Erase and Install'. This will wipe the internal drive of the mini and install a fresh copy of MacOS. That will resolve any outstanding drive/data issues, and give you a system that once completed, will be as it was when it came out of the box, including requiring the initial setup once again. Once that setup is complete, you can then reinstall your software and move your data back from the backups.

  • Serious trouble with permissions and ownership

    My archive/install/Migration Assistant upgrade to Leopard has turned into a nightmare concerning 'ownership' of my files and hard drives.
    To make a long story short, after many many problems wherein files and drives were 'owned' by me but unaccessible to me (often with two ownership qualities attributed to me- one "Read & Write" and the other "Custom", a situation I could not edit or change) I restarted with the installer disc and repaired permissions on my Leopard startup partition. It took several hours and went through thousands of files identifying "ACL" problems.
    Now all my drive icons except for my startup disc have locks on them and I can't write to them even though I supposedly have permission. Carbon Copy Cloner fails to copy to the locked drives*.
    This situation now obtains EVEN WHEN I BOOT IN TIGER: my drives have little lock icons on them. I thought I could revert to Tiger to fix this, but apparently I'm stuck. I need to know how to "unlock" my drives (and eventually return to Tiger).

  • Sorted list view slow.. OS9 is better..

    its when making a folder view option as a list view then sort it by date or size, the window refresh slow or it doesnt refresh at all, u still the same view even if theres more files came, or bigger file saved into that folder, like the finder forgets about this window.. and the finder suddenly wakes up when u try to double click on a file that u see in the list.. it run from u and u find that u opened a different file just because the finder forgot to keep this folder updated...
    its funny that in OS9 this thing never happend.. u keep seeing every thing happens all the time folder changes files keep updates more often..
    is it me or OSX? though i've been suffering from it since OSX1..
    my machine is: iMac 20"/2.1GHZ/1GB RAM/250GB HD/10.4.5.. so if any one thinks its slow... its not

    "i've been suffering from it since OSX1.."
    I'm with you on that one (10.0 for me) - the OS X "Finder" failing to refresh windows has been a complaint since the beginning of OS X. The techie types try to tell you how inefficient "polling" is and how this way is better, completely missing the point that it doesn't matter if you save a few cpu cycles if you are wasting seconds every time you want to access a file because you can't trust what the "Finder" is showing you. I had heard that "Tiger" actually improved a lot in this area (eg. with files added through the command line), but other reports have said that "Finder" does fail to update when certain apps are adding the files (I'm actually still on "Panther").
    It is truly strange that the company (if only in name) that became famous for their user-centric GUI is the same one responsible for the OS X "Finder". The "Finder" with each version of "OS X" is becoming progressively less user friendly - eg. It takes more mouse clicks to rename an item (icon & list view) in "Tiger" than in earlier versions (yes, I am aware of pressing "Return"). "Tiger" also saw the elimination of "Find", replacing it with "Spotlight", which I gather is more powerful in many ways, but has some surprising blind spots. The ⌘G "Go to Folder" function apparently no longer takes you to invisible folders (although it will take you to a visible folder within an invisible one). On the topic of "invisibles", when 'AppleShowAllFiles' is enabled, all files appear grayed out, not just the ones that would normally be invisible. I had also heard that in "Tiger", you can no longer user control-tab to rotate through the various sort criteria in "List View" (Name, Date Modified, Kind, etc.) as you could in "Panther". You can no longer disable the annoying "Are you sure" warning when you change the extension of a file as you could in "Panther". The "hot scroll zone" at the bottom of a window in "List View" has been reported to be expanded compared to "Panther", so that it is almost impossible to click on a file near the bottom of a "List view" window without selecting multiple files (the problem existed in "Panther" but apparently is much more unmanageable in "Tiger"). "Panther" saw the elimination of marquée style selection in "List View", a standard in pre OS X and something that Windows does. And just compare the gaudiness of Finder "Labels" in "Panther" and "Tiger" to the more subtle yet equally informative method used in pre-OS X. And though not exactly a "Finder" problem, the introduction in "Panther" of the automatic file renaming behaviour in "Save" dialogues (which I'm not against as a feature) was done in such a way that people are prone to lose data...
    umm what were we talking about? Oh yeah, "Finder" not refreshing in a timely manner in some situations. Sorry I don't have a solution, but I agree that it is likely not a problem with your hardware, but a function of a design choice made by the "Finder" developers. And it definitely is not "just you".

    Sorry but if that is what you had to do its a bug in leopard and Apple should be responsible for preventing this or any BUGS, did it BUG you? LOL

    Please do not ship bugged OS dvds out again and wait for users to solve there own issues and then tricking them into thinking cuas ethey can that there issues where not bugs but they where the insects to be stepped on.
    I returned to Tiger, much faster actually, much more stable, i replaced Spaces with desktop manager and smack book, i tap my screen to change desktops, even better, i also replaced Spaces by using SuperDuper, works great., and i purchased iLife 8 and PowerBoost which allows me to do everything iChat does now as well, so i see nothing in Leopard for me to be impressed by then there new screen savers, ill miss them a tiny bit .

    WHERE 'Scott' IN v_in_string;
    This ref cursor doesn't seem to return anything when fetched.
    But whereas if i try to build the string for the ref cursor (as shown below), and then try to fetch, i get the result.
    v_sql :=
    'SELECT ''X'' ' ||
    'FROM DUAL ' ||
    'WHERE ''Scott'' IN ' || v_in_string || ' ';
    OPEN p_o_result FOR v_sql;
    Please tell me: "if the 1st case will not work, why will it not work?", as my querys are big enough and I dont want to build them.
    Thanks in anticipation!

  • Kernel crash on trying to start from install CD

    Has anyone experienced this? After (apparently successfully) installing Leopard, I discovered that the Kona 3 PCi card I have installed is not yet compatible. So I tried to return to Tiger. Everytime I try to start from my Tiger install disc I get a kernel crash with:
    Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access DAR=0x0000000000000000 PC=0x000000005546EF94
    Latest crash info for cpu 0:
    Exception state (sv=0x55300500)
    PC=0x5546EF94; MSR=0x00009030; DAR=0x00000000; DSISR=0x40000000; LR=0x5546EF90; R1=0x4518B9A0; XCP=0x0000000C (0x300 - Data access)
    There's more... if anyone has any idea how to solve this problem and needs the rest of the screen I have a Jpeg I can send...
    I fear something drastic has happened to my G5 but I'm sure it can be restored somehow
    any help much appreciated

    yes you would think it would be simple I agree but it hasn't been.... what I'm actually trying to do is return to Tiger as the Kona 3 card is not yet fully compatible with Leopard. This is part of a long saga for me. I even erased the hard disc completely and tried to start up from the DVD and still got the kernel panic. At one point I was able to boot from a firewire drive with an old version of 10.4 but I could not access everything I needed. I have tried to install from a retail DVD of Tiger install disc, I also tried with other Tiger install discs from colleagues but always got the kernel panic.
    HOWEVER, today I reset the SMU (physically pressing the button http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341 ) Then I managed to find the install discs that came with the G5(Quad) and tried again and amazingly it worked. I did an archive and install and now, so far, have Tiger running again and my RAID array is functioning better again.

  • Unix on Bootup (I think)

    Five days ago, before going on vacation, my G5 iMac with OS X 10.4 was running fine other than the time being off by 10 or so hours for some reason (repeated fixes would not hold). I returned from vacation today and when I tried to play a song snippet on iTunes, it seemed to stutter and run very slow. I eventually shut down the other programs (it wouldn't let me shut down iTunes), and restarted. I ended up seeing
    -sh:/etc/profile: is a directory
    -sh-2.05b##
    After a minute or two I hear what is either the DVD drive running (there's no disc in it) or a fan. It does respond to typing in "help" by showing a list of commands.
    I think I might be in command option mode, but don't know how to return to Tiger. I've tried a forced shutdown and resetting the SMV. Even with everything unplugged other than the power cord, it keeps doing the same thing.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Initially I didn't realize there were two (+/- iSight) iMac G5 models. I brought my computer in to the Apple store today (it's under warranty). Sure enough, they said it was booting to Unix. When they hooked up an external boot drive it booted fine and the time was correct (the "Genius" didn't know why there was a problem with the clock but said it could have been an OS X glitch). He ran Disk Warrior. Unfortunately that didn't fix the problem with it booting to Unix. I could have left the computer with them but they said it was possible they would have to reformat the drive. I could have spent $50 to have them back it up, however I discovered I only have 43 GB available on my 250 GB drive (I have a lot of photos, music and video - most of the data is available on video tapes, slides, etc., but it would take a lot of time to get it back on to the computer). I decided it would be best to invest in an external hard drive to give me extra storage space, and to use a back up drive.
    I purchased a 1 TB Western Digital My Book Pro Edition II drive. I couldn't run the included My Book RAID Manager or EMC Retrospect, however, as I couldn't boot the computer from my hard drive. I next tried to install OS X onto the My Book drive, but the Installer said this could not be done. I thought about using my iPOD to install Tiger, but unfortunately I don't have nearly enough free space.
    I'm now copying a disc image of Macintosh HD to the My Book drive via FireWire 400. At the rate it's going, I think it will take 10-15 hours. My thought is that after I have the disc image I can bring the machine back to Apple. If they erase my data I can use the disk image to get my data back, assuming it was a hardware issue. If it was a corrupted file, then I'm concerned using the disk image would reintroduce the problem. Another thought just occurred to me. My daughter has an iBook (circa 11/05). Perhaps there's a way to hook her computer to mine so my G5 sees her iBook as an external drive that I could boot off. Thoughts? Thanks.

  • Changing Appearance of 10.5

    Is there any way to make the appearance of 10.5 look like 10.4? Specifically
    Make the dock look exactly like 10.4 with square edges and black triangles (not just the leopard 2d effect)
    Turn off transparency in all menus (I can do this with the menubar)
    Make all menus have square edges
    I can get folders in the dock to act like they did in 10.4
    Thanks.

    Look for third-party utilities that provide such modifications - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    Of course you could just return to Tiger which sounds like it would make you happier.

  • Installed Leopard on my iMac G-5, bad idea

    I have been running OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) for quite a while. A friend tempted me to upgrade to Leopard with their disks. I also wanted to purchase the ScanSnap scanner which needs Leopard to run, as well as Bento 3.0 which also requires Leopard. Well now I feel that upgrading to Leopard was a big mistake!!! Now I don't have iPhone syncing, iCal search capability, iPhoto transfer to my iPhone and no printing on Address book. I still run into some new surprises every day. I had absolutely no problems with Tiger. Could it be my 667 Bus speed or my non Intel hardware? Whatever it is, I'm ready to pull my hair out trying to find the problems. I've spent hours on the discussions reading everything I could and found nothing that worked. Even after subscribing to MacUpdate, it won't open. I also thought of purchasing MobilMe to sync everything but am not sure that would work if I'm having the current problems. I'm ready to go buy a new iMac but am afraid the problems to the new machine will only transfer. Does anyone have a solution. I would return to Tiger but after reading some of the discussions, it may not be possible to go backwards without making even more problems. BTW, already have a lot of scanning done (no problems with the Fujitsu 1500M) but still want to continue so I'm frantically scanning as fast as I can so if I do return to Tiger, I will at least be able to access what I scanned! Sorry I upgraded!! Thought also of going to the local Apple store counter and sharing my stories. No doubt my unit is out of warranty.

    A friend tempted me to upgrade to Leopard with their disks.
    What's wrong with this picture?
    It is THEIR discs. They are the only ones licensed to use those discs.
    Furthermore, if it is really an iMac G5, unless the discs look like * they are not designed to work with your machine. They are only designed to work on the machine whose label is on them. Thus any flaws you see in the installation are due to using the wrong discs. Furthermore the last iMac G5 left the market prior to Leopard's arrival, so if the discs say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM they won't work on your iMac in any case.
    Now many also confuse the iMac G5, for iMac Intel. These are totally different beasts, even though externally, they look identical. Look on the base of the iMac in question. If it has an EMC# of: 2104, 2105, 2110, 2114, 2118, 2111, 2133, 2134 it is an iMac Intel, and not an iMac G5. iMacs which look like are iMac Intel as well. Those which may use Leopard Update discs are iMac Intel whose serial number begins: xx742xxxx to xx744xxxx where x can be any letter or number.
    If you want Leopard for your Mac, you can usually call Apple Store sales, as they often have discs for sale. But do not use another person's discs. It is against license agreement, unless they remove it from all of their machines.
