Reuse of Windows 7 OEM on repaired computer

A computer I built several years ago has died.   If I repair it, is the repaired computer OK under the same OEM package I originally bought for it?   Despite the parts needed?  Would a whole new barebones kit be OK if it totally replaces
the old computer?

An OEM license is only valid for the hardware upon which it was initially installed.  They are not transferable.  If you replaced the motherboard, that is considered a new computer and you will need a new license for it.

  • Lenovo G505s windows 8, preparing automatic repair then black screen

    Hi,
Since a few months I have a lenovo G595s with Windows 8 installed, the thing is I don't know much over computers, but last tuesday I was just working and my laptop was next to me without any task, and somehow when I was going to reuse the computer I wasn't able because the screen where all the apps are was frozen, so I tried with CTR ALT DELETE nothing happened, then I just turn it off, and since it only goes on with the Lenovo logo, in the under part says or appears Preparing automatic repair and like 1 min later it goes completely in black without turning off.
I tried el the F keys at the beggining of the start, in the middle, with a windows CD as well, but I just don't get access to the BIOS or any other configuration, only black screen, doesn't matter how long I leave it on.
If somebody could help me to find out what is happening with the computer.
    Thank you a lot

    hi Dlskmalpik,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Automatic Repair usually kicks in if there's a problem loading up the files that's required to start Windows. If the repair was interrupted and the screen just goes into a black screen then there's most likely a hardware component that's malfunctioning.
    To check, try to:
1.Boot into the BIOS by pressing the OneKey Recovery button
      - Link to picture
If successful, set the following settings in the BIOS:
    Security Tab:
    Secure Boot = Disabled
    Boot Tab:
    UEFI = Disabled or Legacy
    Boot Mode = Legacy
    Boot Priority = Legacy First
    Exit Tab
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS or Disabled
When done, press F10 (or Fn+10) to save and exit and try to boot from your Windows CD (i'm assumming this is a Windows 8 disc).
    2. If you're successful in booting from the Windows 8 Disc, see Step 1 to Step 2 of this guide on how to proceed in fixing the issue.
    3. If the problem remains, consider re-instaling Windows by pressing the OneKey Recovery button and choose System Recovery
      - Link to picture
In an event that the recovery fails, I recommend you contact lenovo and report the issue as you may need to send the unit for service..
    Regards

  • Windows is Scanning and repairing drive... (- Errors in Event Viewer)

Long post, please be patient... :)
    I have a fairly new (purchased 8/2013) Lenovo ThinkPad T431s with Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (updated from 8.0 -> 8.1). It has a very tricky error coming basically 8 / 10 boots:
Windows is Scanning and repairing drive...
Error details from Windows Event Viewer (a new similar error appears on every boot to event viewer):
A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume \?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984}.
A file on the volume is no longer reachable from its parent directory. The parent file reference number is 0x2000000000002. The name of the parent directory is "". The parent index attribute is ":$I30:$INDEX_ALLOCATION". The file reference
number of the file that needs to be reconnected is 0x400000003db80. There may be additional files on the volume that also need to be reconnected to this parent directory.
What has been done 1st trying to fix that:
SSD disk has been changed (image from previous SSD copied back) ->
    no solution, error remains
chkdsk /F /R -> no solution, error remains
SFC /scannow -> no solution, error remains
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth -> no solution, error remains after a few boots
TRIED using Windows 8.1 "Update & Recovery -> Refresh Your PC without affecting your files" -> Inserted the Lenovo "Operating System Recovery Disk Windows 8 Pro (OEM Activation 3.0 Required)" BUT Windows did not accept
that DVD claiming "The media inserted is not valid"... ???
Ended up calling Lenovo Support and they instructed me to order the Recovery DVD from
Lenovorecovery.com -> Unfortunatelly Windows does not recognice the DVD(s)...
    mountvol returns:
    \\?\Volume{4d337687-0033-42f7-8a8e-b6968b533cb3}\

Then running fsutil dirty query on each returns:

The chkdsk on the dirty volume
    \\?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984}\ returned:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or
    other shadow copy data.
A snapshot error occured while scanning this drive. Run an offline scan and fix.
Diskpart output on the same volume:

    Partition 4 Primary 146 GB 1389 MB
    Partition 5 Recovery 350 MB 147 GB
    Partition 6 Recovery 19 GB 148 GB
    Questions:
    1) Are my Partitions OK, haven't "touched" anything?
    2) Excluded the dirty volume from boot checking with chkntfs /x
-> still the Error appears in Event viewer log (but Scanning is skipped/not shown anymore during the boot).
    What is causing the error?
    3) Why do I have three (3) recovery partitions?

What has happened in the past days:
    A) Lenovo on-site-Support changed the motherboard -> had no impact on the error (which I expected).
    B) I found
instructions how to manually create USB Flash stick with a booting Custom (OEM) Recovery Image.
    C) Booted with USB and performed "Refresh your PC without affecting your files."
    D) Windows was refreshed but...
    -->>
Still the error remains (Windows scanning and repairing drive \?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984} on each and every boot.
    1) Related Error in Event viewer (NTFS):
A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume \?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984}.
A file on the volume is no longer reachable from its parent directory. The parent file reference number is 0x2000000000002. The name of the parent directory is "". The parent index attribute is ":$I30:$INDEX_ALLOCATION". The file reference number of the
file that needs to be reconnected is 0x400000003db80. There may be additional files on the volume that also need to be reconnected to this parent directory.
    2) Related Error in Event viewer (NTFS - Microsoft Windows NTFS):
Volume \\?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984} (\Device\HarddiskVolume5) needs to be taken offline to perform a Full Chkdsk.  Please run "CHKDSK /F" locally via the command line, or run "REPAIR-VOLUME <drive:>" locally or remotely via
    PowerShell.

Now Lenovo support is proposing a full re-install (to be performed by myself) of Windows as this is SW issue.
    Summary:
    - Refreshing my T431s with OEM Image does not help
    - The error remains on \?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984} (\Device\HarddiskVolume5; Lenovo Recovery partition) OR at least Windows thinks so...

  • Installing Windows 7 OEM on Maverick

Apple Store advised me to get a Windows 7 OEM 64 bit disc for my 2013 macbook pro:
http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Premium-System-Builder-Packaging/dp/B00H09BB16/ref =sr_1_1?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1393131478&sr=1-1&keywords=windows+7 .  This is a generic OEM (not Dell, etc.)
I am using bootcamp, yet it won't install, and I end up with a black screen saying "No hardware detected."
An apple-care advisor later told me that bootcamp doesn't support OEM's at all.
But I have read of people installing Windows 7 on bootcamp using OEM disks throughout the Apple Forums.
There is also good feedback on installing Windows 7 on parallels, but I plan to use Windows for heavy gaming and game design, and I was advised against parallels for this purpose.
I'd love some feedback and advice on how best to install Windows 7.

Apple’s Genius Bar looked at the computer and the Bootcamp partition and said it was a Microsoft issue—and to call their customer support.  Apple, after endorsing the Bootcamp and Windows 7 option enthusiastically is now saying, that it’s a 50-50 proposition that Windows works on Maverick and MacBook.
Microsoft says it’s a Bootcamp problem.
When I try to repartition with Bootcamp, it's saying there is no driver.
    Anyone want to weigh in?
Is it merely a dud disk (that we paid full price for on Amazon—that is not a bootleg of any sort?
Is it worth investing in another disk?

  • How to do a CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 8.1 with a Windows 8 OEM Key

I have recently purchased a new C540 that has Windows 8 already installed on it.  I would like to perform a clean install of Windows 8.1 on this computer.
This is what I have done so far:
I disabled 3 things in the BIOS: IIRC, they were secure boot, quick boot, and something about "optimized" startup
I have changed my boot priority to put the CD/DVD drive first and any flashdrive 2nd
I have figured out my OEM Windows Product Key (this is for a Windows 8 Core/64 bit OS)
I have setup a flashdrive with Windows 8.1 on it
I tried to boot from the flashdrive...when I get the option to install windows 8.1, I click on it and very quickly get the following error -- "The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key."
I added a PID.txt file with my OEM product key in the Source folder of the Windows 8.1 install....I don't get the above error message immediately, but a screen comes up that asks me to enter a Product Code...my OEM product code (being for W8,  not W8.1) does not work while using a generic key (for Windows 8.1 Core) yields the same error message as above and exits the installer.
I then added an EI.CFG file that sets the edition to core, the version to OEM, and the Volume to 0...unfortunately, when trying to install Windows 8.1 it still asks me for a product key before installing...I cannot get past this screen even though (to my understanding) the EI.CFG file should cause the installer to skip asking for a product key...
It is important to me that I get to perform a CLEAN install of Windows 8.1...I do not want to upgrade through windows store...the only keys I have are a W8 Pro Retail key (for my laptop) and a W8 Core OEM key (that came with the new C540)...I am using a flashdrive to perform this since I knew I may have to add/change files like the PID and EI.CFG....
I would appreciate any help I can get in solving this problem...I am also willing to try burning an .iso with the PID and/or EI.CFG, but I'm trying to avoid trial and error with that since it is time consuming, requires an ADK, and may waste DVDs...I'd only make an .iso if (for whatever reason) that would work where a flashdrive woud not...

I have a new SSD drive and need to either migrate my old HD data, including the Windows 8.1 OS or do a a clean install.  I have obtained the ISO, prepared the boot for the flashdrive and downloaded the install software.  It asks for the product key.   I used the suggested BIOS reader and obtained "a" product key off the BIOS and used that it but (as above) it does not recognize the image.
How id I get my single Windows license onto my new SSD HD?  Reload, clean install, ???
How do I get the proper product key or confirm it is correct?
It is a new system with little data that I need to copy. I just want the operating system.  I have the driver disc that came with it.

  • I partitioned a small drive for a windows program, and now the computer only wants to boot to Windows.  How do I get back to Mac so I can have a choice of drives?

I partitioned a small drive for a windows program, and now the computer only wants to boot to Windows.  How do I get back to Mac so I can have a choice of drives?

That doesn't sound good. It sounds like the power outage might have corrupted the partition for OS X. I would suggest booting from the Install DVD that came with your Mac while holding down the C key. Once you have selected the language start up Disk Utility from the pull down menu and repair the disk. Once you have done that then repair permissions also.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

Everything was fine when i am just using WINDOWS 8, this happened all after installling the 8.1 update.. i guess its a video driver problem..BTW I have installed all the HP drivers for 8.1..  Can I ask for a soft copy of windows 8 oem for my laptop or a download site to revert this back to windows 8?   any solution?

    Hello Eisman
I am sorry to hear you had issues with the Windows 8.1 update. You can easily restore your system back to Windows 8 by using the Microsoft System Restore. I am providing you with an HP Support document here that will provide you with instructions on how to do that. When you do your restore just ensure you choose a restore point when you had Windows 8 working correctly.
I hope this answers your question. I would like to thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great weekend!

Thank you for your answer which is interesting because it is a disk of 2 TB... If I create a partition do you think it can solve my problem? I prefer this old version of Photoshop, very practical to use...

  • Reinstallling Windows 7 oem on bootcamp

Hi i have recently gotten windows7 with boot camp on my Imac but found that my partition for Windows was to small, i wish to enlarge it but i am afraid i cant reinstall windows 7 becuase i have a OEM version. Is it possible for me to install windows 7 again or am i going to need to buy a new product key?

Windows 7 can  make disk image - OS and all your data track by track - of existing to external disk (StartMenu> Maintenance> BackupAndRestore> Create a System Image) - which could be restored to larger OSX BootCamped space.
You would want to first create a Windows 7 32/64 repair CD: (StartMenu> Maintenance> Create a System Repair Disk).
After OSX BootCamp space expand, boot (with Option key,) with external disk mounted, selecting Repair CD to boot from and then selecting Restore Image backup in Repair menus, (I am not sure if it will auto format  enlarged BootCamp space to NTFS or ask you to tell it to do so).
The restore and original backup will take about 1 hour, less time than a Windows install with all its and BootCamp updates.

  • Can I use my windows 8 oem embedded product key to windows 8.1?

I have Y500 and I change the hard drive because the default hard drive fails.
I can't find Windows 8 OEM version, so I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Media Creation Tool.
Create a bootable usb, choose Windows 8.1/64Bit.
After the installation of OS, I try to view my product key and put it in activation, it doesn't work.
    What should I do?

It will not work. The OEM keys that come with a computer will not work in a Microsoft provided ISO install file. This is a Microsoft thing not a Lenovo thing.
Is your computer still in warranty? If it is, contact Lenovo customer support. They should be able to get you a system restore image. If its not still in Warranty, did you create a recovery disc when you first got the computer? If not then you will need to contact Customer Support and purchase a recovery set.
Also is the new harddrive the same size as the old one? If not you may have issues recovering your factory image.

  • Question about Windows XP OEM vs. Windows XP retail

will i have any problems purchasing and installing windows XP OEM vs a retail version? i really don't want to spend $200 on windows since i'm only getting it to test websites on IE BUT i can get an OEM version for $88 at newegg.
i'm assuming they are the same except that the retail version comes in box.
also, is there any reason to get the pro version vs the home version? if i go with the pro version should i get the "X64 Edition" or the regular pro version?
this will be installed on a mac pro
    thanks

The only difference between the two OEM vs Retail is in the licensing of the softwares use. The OEM version is licensed to be used on a single specific computer (the computer you bought, or built from parts), and cannot be used on another computer, even if the original computer is no longer in use. The Retail license, does not include the limited single computer use, and can be installed on any computer, as long as it is the only one using that license.
As for home vs pro, for you use, I don;t see the need for pro.
You also don;t need the 64 bit edition for just testing web pages.

I purchased a song on itunes and when I play it, it says my computer is not authorized. A window pops to authorize my computer so I type in my account info and hit authorize. After that a window pops up saying it is already authorized but still won't play. None of this happens with any other songs on my itunes. I would just purchase the song again but I can't because every time I try to purchase it, the song says "play" next to it instead of "buy." When I hit play no music plays it just goes back to saying my computer is not authorized so I authorize it and it says it is already authorized then I click it again and it says my computer is not authorized. It's a never ending annoying circle. How can I get the song to play?

Assuming your rig can support virtual machines, you can use Hyper-V and run another OS there.
Better practice however is to use a dedicated machine and use remote desktop to the server.
