Rev A or Rev B
Hey guys,
I notice that there are many problems posted on this forum, and could possibly turn away potential switchers and/or buyers. Anyway, I was just wondering if we could make a standard with posting, that you post what revision your computer is, A or B.
From this forum I gather that rev A's have a lot more problems than rev B's, so this will help to put a positive note in potential buyers minds that the computer they are/will buying/buy has most of the problems fixed.
Anyway, these are my thoughts. What do you think?

leight, I have a Rev A that has been trouble free. There is an unofficial reliability survey published on the following web page: http://www.macintouch.com/reliability/ I don't know how statistically valid it is but it points the finger at the 20" Rev A units.

[SOLVED] Mic does not work on Intel ICH8 (rev 3) sound card
Hi, folks.
I cannot get my sound card to record anything, using a built-in microphone. Audio output works just fine, though. I hope someone can help me, I have been banging my head against the wall for some time over this issue...
My laptop is Toshiba Satellite A200-1J0 (PSAE6E-04R036G3). alsamixer settings are fine, I tried supplementing additional options to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, but no luck, tried some of the combinations (model=<> position_fix=<>).
When recording sound with gnome-sound-recorder, with Capture set as input, nothing is heard. Skype can't record anything, either. I can't even get the crackling or hissing sound like some users do.
Should I try to get the latest ALSA?
Debug details start from now on:

Last edited by teMplaryum (2010-01-26 10:15:18)Hi there!
I had the very same problem with the same soundcard and found this thread.
The problem got solved for me by adding the same line as you have to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
However, I also had to create /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf and add:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba power_save=0
Notice the difference on the "model=toshiba" part.
However, my laptop is not a Toshiba, but a Compal IFL90.
I remember that in Ubuntu I needed(a long time ago) to add a line to /etc/alsa.conf with model=toshiba. I figured it might be worth a try, and well, it did.
I hope this can help someone else.
As for the OP: "You have my thanks!" -
Memory question...ocz El Rev 2
Just put my system together. It has the 1.1 bios. I put in 2 512MB sticks of OCZ EL Rev. 2 Platinum. Sticks are in the 2 slots closest to the CPU. I've read that there may be some problems with 2 sticks of double sided ram. My machine will post if I use only 1 stick in slot 1. or it will post and read the full 1 GB if I put the sticks in Slots 1 & 3.
When it does post, it comes up as DDR333 Single channel, 64-bit, mem clock is 166Mhz
Tcl:2, Trcd:2, Tras:5 Trp:5 (2t Timing)
DDR Dimm at rows 0 1 4 5
How can I get the machine to recognize both sticks of dual-sided memory?
Maybe a stupid question, but....if the BIOS version has something to do with this problem, is there some way to update it before I install windows XP?
I guess I can use 1 stick and install everything, and then add the other after I flash the BIOS (if this is a BIOS related problem).Quote

It's been running for a few hours since the reboot, with no problems.
The rams manually set at 2,2,2,5 {2T}, (or maybe it 2,2,5,2 {2T}...depends on how you read it), with the memory voltage set at 2.75(BIOS is flashing red as though it doesn't like this, but that's the proper voltage according to OCZ. I've got FSB at 200, AGP freq. at 67.
My other settings, although I don't know if they're good or not are:
High Performance mode = manual
aggressive timing = disabled
dynamic overclocking = disabled
spread spectrum = disabled
HT freq. = 5x .....is this the multiplier x fsb to =1000?
cool 'n' quiet = disabled
adjust CPU ratio = "startup"...not sure if this good
adjust CPU VID = 1.500v ...not too sure about this either
CPU voltage = "by CPU vid" not sure on this either
AGP voltage = 1.50v ....not sure once again
ACTUALLY I"M NOT SURE OF ANY OF THE ABOVE, BUT I GLEENED MOST OF IT FROM THIS FORUM
For info purposes, I have the 2 sticks in DIMM slots 3 and 4, with slots 1 and 2 empty. The Zalman fan sits on top of slot 1, and although when the DIMM is in this slot it does not hit the CPU's heatsink, I didn't want to keep bending the fins, during the removal and replacement. I don't believe there's any problem with this memory placement, acording to the mobo manual, but if anyone disagrees, please post.
So, to sum up, it appears the updated BIOS seems to have solved the problem!

"Bending the fins"??? Do you mean it is NOT possible to use the memories in slots 1, 2 with this Zalman without bending the fins? Oh god... I just got one today...

How can I get Apple to replace my rev a with isight imac?
I'm on my second major repair of my Imac rev a in less than a year. So many horror stories here. How hard is it to get Apple to replace my computer with one that one break down all the time? Any advice would be helpful.
RoxieI am currently trying my hardest to get a replacement machine. I have had several repairs on my iMac, (6 trips to the apple store!!) but they have told me that my repairs were not major enough to warrant a new machine. I am sending letters and documentation to as many people in customer relations as possible.
Right now my computer is getting repaired. Again.
Good luck. -
PSA no deletion SAP BW on HANA Rev 61
Hi,
PSAs are not getting deleted for some of the datasources due to error loads and multiple runs. System is SAP BW on HANA Rev 61.
The previous job failure was not corrected and the subsequent job was started based on the process chain schedule and that one as well failed. This has happened 2 times. Now the PSA table says it has duplicate entries and it is not dropping when we try to delete manually or through program.
Whenever we try to delete the PSA, the SAPLSDB2 program runs and is stuck in SM51. St22 error log says

IMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) - CPU and Optical drive fans rev up to 4000 rpm
Hello,
I just want to share my experience with my rather new Imac
I bought this Imac last April and I had the fans roaring after 2 weeks of light usage. I followed instructions like resetting the SMC, unplugging the imac and restarted.
However, I started installing other software like Paragon NTFS, VLC, Firefox and also Istat nano. This happened on a more regular basis and istat nano was showing up fairly normal temperatures - an average of 50° C and I had the CPU fan at 3800 and the Optical drive fan at 4200 rpms. According to apple support, at this temperature fans should be running at factory level or a bit more. Even when I stop all activity, the fans keep up and does not stop even after a couple of hours of inactivity on the imac. Apple support recommended that I reinstall macos on a new partition and run tests and during the tests, the only software I installed was istat nano and still got the fans going with the same result - required a shutdown to bring fans at normal levels and yet average temperatures were around 50 - 55 °C.
Eventually got apple to replace heat sensors - this did not help - still got the same unwanted result, fans reving up to 4000 rpm and not stopping and all that without going above 60°C. I was at the stage to demand a complete replacement but decided to give it another couple of weeks testing.
Last test, a complete reinstall of the OS and this time, without any other software apart from standard software delivered with the mac. Ran a few things like importing over 10,000 pictures with iphoto and some other stuff to increase activity - overall CPU usage was at 5% idle for a good few hours and could not reproduce the problem (istat nano was not installed, so I could not monitor temperature). I started installing Paragon NTFS for mac and ran the same scenarios and still no fans going crazy - putting my hands over the top of the imac, can feel a slight breeze...).
Installed other software such as VLC and Firefox 5.0 but still no istat nano and same high activity, import high volumes in iphoto and also did an empty secure thrash to increase load. CPU usage was to 95 again and still fans are behaving properly.
One thing that comes to my mind with istat nano is that, when the fans get going, the ambient value change to -140 - I do not want to rush into any conclusion but is it possible that there is some interference between istat nano and those new sensors that have come in with Imac mid 2010 (from reading mac forums, Apple has added a new ambient sensor..). Because all the time I have been reinstalling the OS, I have always installed istat nano to monitor temperature and fan speed and I always got this issue. But since yesterday, I have installed clean OS, tested, added some 3rd party software but still no istat nano and I canot reproduce the issue. I have been using the same scenario during all this testing - very high import with iphoto, viewing a film, empty secure thrash, enough to use up to 95% CPU.
Has anyone experienced this? I hope this is the cause of my problem because this mac is making my life easier at home compared to previous PC and also, I want to know that my hardware is not at fault...
I will keep you posted if I get the issue again - could be tempted to install istat nano and run the tests to see if the fans will rev up after this but not sure I want to go through another 4 days of just doing this...

IMac G5 (Rev. A) can't connect to AirPort Express
We have 2 Macintosh computers at home; one Mac mini G4 1.42GHz (model M9687LL/B) with built in AirPort Extreme card; and one iMac G5 (Rev. A) 1.6 GHz (model M9363LL/A) also with an AirPort Extreme card.
The mini was bought new, while the iMac was used when we bought it. When we bought it, the company (who were selling old Macitosh computers previously rented to other companies) installed and additional 512 MB of RAM (on top of the 256MB already in it) as well as the AirPort Extreme card. We then upgraded the OS from 10.3.9 Panther to 10.4.4 Tiger. Then we used a FireWire cable to copy the harddrive of my dads work computer (iMac G4) to the new one. We then took it home.
At home we had a linksys wireless router (model BEFW11S4) which we used to connect to the internet. Connected to this wireless network was an AirPort Express unit which we used to stream music to the downstairs stereo. However, the linksys router caused many problems, one of them being that everytime we started a computer, the router needed to be restarted to be able to send a signal so we could connect to the internet.
Eventually, we got feed up with this, and took the AirPort Express unit upstairs and replaced the linksys with it. We installed it, and it worked fine. Upstairs (location of Mac mini, the signal strength was always 4 or 3 (the little icon in the menu bar), but downstairs (where the iMac's located), the signal stayed at about 3, or sometimes 2.
After about a week, the downstairs signaled started to be more 2 than 3, but this made no real difference to us, since it still worked. Then, yesterday, it went down to 1, but still worked. Then, today, it stayed at 1, then totally disconnected. When we click the symbol in the menu bar, we can press on the wireless network to tell the computer to connect to it, but it only comes up with a box saying that the computer could not connect to it.
We have tried more or less everything to get it to work. Turning on and off the AirPort Extreme card in the computer, updating the AirPort Express firmware, restarted computers, the whole lot! But it still wont work!
My dad has borrowed an old iBook with a G3 800MHz processor running 10.3.9 Panther. The iBook has an AirPort card in it (not AirPort Extreme), but even downstairs, it gets full (or sometimes 3) connection. I even tried the basement, and it still works!
So my question is, why won't the iMac even connect to the network? Any help is greatly appreciated!
iMac G5, 1.6GHz, 768MB, AirPort Express Mac OS X (10.4.4)I'm having a very similar problem with my iMac. I moved the airport down to the basement last week. Reception was at 3, but droped quickly to 2 and 1 and eventually the iMac lost the connection to the airport.
I brought the airport back to the office where the iMac is located and where the airport used to be, but I was unable to join the network again, even though the signal was received by the computer. I downloaded a widget for the dashboard that showed full strength of the signal.
While having these problems with the iMac, I don't have any problems connecting with my iBook to the network. Since I was able to connect to the airport via the iBook, I changed some of the settings, but nothing really helped except disabling wireless security. Agter that I was able to connect to the network via the iMac again, but only for a couple of minutes until the network disappeared again.
I'm reading about lots of other people having problems with the airport recently. So I suspect that this has to do with the recent OS X update. Hopefully somebody at Apple is looking at this problem right now! -
SAP GUI 7.10 rev 1 for OSX and WIN XP with transaction MIGO
Hello,
When I start transaction MIGO and MIGO_GR, with SAP GUI 7.10 rev 1, I only get a blank screen.
I've tried it in OSX 10.4.9, OSX 10.5.1 and Windows XP, all with the same result.
SAP GUI 7.10 gives the correct screen.
Do you have a solution for this ?Hi John,
I can reproduce what you are describing. Looks like this problem has been introduced as a side effect of a change for solving another issue
We are going to look into that. In case you want to be able to track the process and get a notification when the fix is available, please create a [support message|https://service.sap.com/message] on component BC-FES-JAV with the description you have posted here.

Hello,
we upgraded our HANA scale out system from rev. 69.1 to rev. 72.
~4 hours after the upgrade our HDB crashed with OOM errors on the master indexserver.
Since than we are trying to start it back up and face OOM errors during startup in the index rebuild phase:
The errors clearly state the HANA runs out of allocatable memory for Pool/IndexRebuildAllocator during startup.
It looks like HANA requires more memory during this phase compared to rev. 69.1
Our Master node has 512GB of physical memory and the Allocation limit is set to 95% of this (default).
Here is what we read from our logs during startup:

In order to fix this bottleneck, we first need to get HDB started, but how?
Is there a way to aviod that row store tables are being loaded during startup? (this would allow enough memory for the index rebuild)
Is there a way to skip the index rebuild during startup?
Can we increase the allocation limit to more than 95% of the physical memory? (e.g. we could configure swap space to be utilized, just to get over the edge of this during the startup in order to bring our HDB back up and work on reducing the memory requirement on the master index server)
Kind Regards
Florian Wittmann
ps. we also have a call with SAP.To update everyone who runs into the same issue during startup of HANA, here is the solution that has worked for us. But I highly recommend to have such an approach reviewed by SAP service before I you perform this!
For us the only chance left to bring HANA up was to configure swap space on the master node. (We configured 20GB...we could not know how much memory it would need during the startup to get passed the index rebuild, so that was just a guess that turned out to be just enough for us to get passed that memory peak during the startup phase).
After that we adjusted the custom parameter file /sapmnt/<SID>/global/hdb/custom/config/global.ini
and maintained a global_allocation_limit that we manually calculated as (512GB physical mem. + 20GB swap mem.)/0.95
e.g.
[memorymanager]
global_allocation_limit=517530
Than we started HANA up again and made use of the page file during the index rebuild in the startup phase...of course this dramatically slows down the startup...well you do an index reorg using swap space...but after 1hour we got passed the index rebuild and memory utilization went down again. (With this error we learned that HANA has a significantly higher memory consumption during startup and the upgrade from SP 6 to SP 7 must have even increased this slightly, since we managed to startup our HANA db before upgrading without this issue, but it was not the root cause!)
Now that we had HANA back up, we investigated memory consuming indices together with SAP, and with the help of below query, we identified row store table RSMONMESS to hold 25GB of 2ndary indices!
select table_name, round((sum(index_size)) / 1024 / 1024, 2) as
SIZE_IN_MB, count(*) as number_of_indexes from M_RS_INDEXES group by
table_name order by SIZE_IN_MB desc
Before droping 2ndary indices:
TABLE_NAME;SIZE_IN_MB;NUMBER_OF_INDEXES
RSMONMESS;30.883,8;6
drop index SAP<SID>."RSMONMESS~AXX";
drop index SAP<SID>."RSMONMESS~TIM";
drop index SAP<SID>."RSMONMESS~AU1";
drop index SAP<SID>."RSMONMESS~RID";
drop index SAP<SID>."RSMONMESS~AXY";
After drop:
TABLE_NAME;SIZE_IN_MB;NUMBER_OF_INDEXES
RSMONMESS;5.708,43;1
With that change we reset our custom parameter on global_allocation_limit and went back to the default (95% of main physical mem.), removed the swap file and started up HANA again...and during this startup we managed to stay in our global_allocation_limit and bring HANA back up again! -
Firmware Upgrade for Actiontec GT704WG Rev. B Router
How do I find the firmware upgrade for the Actiontec GT704WG Rev. B Router? Almost everytime I try to get onto the internet, I have to run the troubleshooter because there is no connection and the final diagnosis is that "The default gateway is unavailable." Googled and found that it is due to the need for a firmware update for the router but cannot find one on the internet. Help!!!
Hi Funrunner
You didn't say which version of the firmware you are currently running, however the latest firmware for that router is Version
3.20.3.3.5.0.9.2.14
Thank you,

D-Link DIR-615 (Rev H1(!)) does not work with Airport Express?
Hi there,
I had my AirPlay working just fine with my Airport Express (AX) and my wireless N Router D-Link DIR-615 (Rev. B2). Now I changed my Internet provider and received a D-Link DIR-615 (Rev. H1) and I cannot find my AX anymore (I mean, it's still here, but the AirPort Utility cant find it!)
Are there known issues between those two?
(The Rev. H1/B2 is the Hardware Version of my D-Link DIR-615. The Firmware is up-to-date (8.01 I think))
The status light is a solid, beautiful green.
I already tried the following:
- restart the AX, the D-Link and my MacBook (10.7.2)
- changed from AES to TKIP (found that somewhere in the internet)
- Reseted my AX to factory settings and configured everything new. (via Ethernet)
Probably interesting:
- After resetting to factory settings and configuring everything new, the AX showed up in iTunes, but when I tried to connect with it, it kept me waiting for 1-3 Minutes and simply did not connect w/o error message. The AX disappeared after restarting iTunes.
I'm running out of solutions..
Anyone a good question/suggestion or answer for me?
greetings
squobOnly way I see out other than waiting, is to hook he Drive to a Mac, (FW preferable for speed), then get Tri-Backup...

Hi, My Macbook Air Rev A 80gb HDD isn't showing up in Disk Utilitiy (new hdd btw)
Hey guys.. im new and this is my first post
Recently my Macbook Air rev a 80gb original hdd was failing *S.M.A.R.T* so i knew its time for a new hdd soon anyways... then i managed to format it with disk utility one day then after that it completely stopped detecting in disk utilitiy. now got my new hdd which is exactly the same *confirmed* and well its not detecting with my macbook...
Helllppppp meee please
(PS. dont just comment stating the obvious i.e. try a new hdd cable as they are not cheap for a trial and error case)
Thanks...
Ps. i have a secondary Mac Pro to use in the meantime if this can help repair/cd boot?Does the new drive appear in Disk Utility? If so then you need to prep the drive before you can use it:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
If the drive does not appear in Disk Utility then either the new drive is dead, you've installed the ribbon cable incorrectly, the new drive is physically installed improperly, or there is some other hardware issue. -

SAP GUI Java 7.10 rev 5: Copy cells content from ALV does not work (OSX)
Hi all,
I'm trying rev 5 for OSX. ALV aesthetics is really great but: copy cells content is not possible anymore.
Nothing happens with command+C.
I cannot copy anymore just a part of the cell content.
Trying all possible key combinations, something is copied with Ctrl+C. When I paste it, the pasted content is something like this:
(0100),RID(),CID(),RIDN(0),E(true),RO(false),CTL(-1) (0000012338),RID(),CID(),RIDN(0),E(true),RO(false),CTL(-1) (),RID(),CID(),RIDN(0),E(true),RO(false),CTL(-1) (),RID(),CID(),RIDN(0),E(true),RO(false),CTL(-1) (),RID(),CID(),RIDN(0),E(true),RO(false),CTL(-1) (),RID(),CID(),RIDN(0),E(true),RO(false),CTL(-1)
where "0000012338" is the content I wanted to copy.
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
LorenzoHello Lorenzo,
thanks for the feedback. We are working on it and if all goes well, a solution will be provided with 7.10 rev 6.
Best regards

Hard Drive Failure on Rev 1 Macbook Air. What are my options?
My HD on my Macbook Air (Rev 1) 1.6 ghz 80 gb pata HD has failed. so I am going to have to take to it an Apple Service provider to fix. My question is what options do I have, I.e. Could I upgrade disk size, put in an SSD drive instead or is my only viable option to go for a like for like change. grateful anyones thoughts.
Thanks In advance for the help.
JamesLots of people have swapped out for SDD. If you are going through a service provider then best to ask them what they are comfortable doing. It may be they will only install what they supply and maybe only Apple authorized parts.

Using rectangles to mask another shape?
How can I take a shape with a gradient like in the attached image, and make it so other shapes like the series of rectangles mask the gradient so the gradient only shows through the rectangles? Thanks.
