Reverb issues

I am trying to match up two sets of audio files in a single project. One set (stereo) has a fair amount of "small room" reverb which makes it stand out from the other set of audio files (mono). The quality of speaker's voice is still intelligible but somewhat tinny.
I know that removing reverb is next to impossible even with the best of equipment. My goal is to lessen or bring down the reverb of the small room set to bring it closer to the other set of audio files. What combination of effects would I need to apply to pull this off?
I have tried matching EQ with little to no effect. I have also tried various combinations of EQ, Noise Gate, and a Compressor with some success but it still isn't where I would like it to be.

It sounds like you are aware of the difficulty of the problem and are on the right track.
I think the first thing you should do is sum the stereo track to mono.
That is a great way to cancel out some of the reverb, and then you'll
be starting with mono in both cases.
Small rooms tend to have strong resonances, so if you can sweep a bandboost EQ
to find one or two of the most intense peaks, you can then change the EQ boost
to a cut and reduce the sound in that frequency range. This can help.
The tricky thing in your case is that cutting a typical low reverb frequency
is also cutting out the fullness you might need to get rid of the tininess in the voice.
Expanding (a gentler process than gating) can be added next.
Make sure the attack is fast and try to adjust the threshold and release
to reduce the reverb without destroying the speech. If the track varies
in loudness a lot, this trick might not work at all.
You should definitely add a little reverb to the dry tracks.
Check out the various presets available to you. Sometime reverbs have
small room presets. Try to figure out how close you can get it to the
roomy tracks without making it sound bad.
Room tone can be added at the end. Figure out which set of files has the most
room tone, get a sample of it, and then add it to the other set. If you sample
the roomy track, do so after you've mixed it down to mono.

  • Reverb issue, can anyone replicate?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping one (or a few) kind souls can try to replicate an issue I'm having with my phone - the earpiece seems to play back what the mic records, meaning my voice, my breath, everything.  It's very distracting and very annoying.
To replicate it, while on a call, simply run your finger back and forth over the mic hole on the bottom of the phone.  On mine, I can hear the rubbing sound very clearly and loudly through the earpiece.  This means that, for some reason, the phone is playing back what the mic records.  I can't fathom why it should do this.
Just trying to determine if this is 1- a common problem, 2- a software issue that could be resolved in a setting or update, or 3- a hardware problem which likely will never be fixed.  I can live with the issue if there's hope that it will/can be resolved, but if there's no hope of resolution, it'll be very hard to live with this phone for the next 2 years.
    Thanks in advance.

I found it really distracting, hearing your own voice as you speak is something that has always bothered me on phones that do it.
And after a call to tec suppoort, in which every issue was responded to with basically - "that's the way it is, you can always return the phone", it became clear that Verizon's interests are *not* in ensuring that this phone works properly.
Buzzy reverb through earpiece:  Stand outside to make a call, if you don't like that, return the phone.
Abysmally low signal strength:  Stand outside to make a call, if you don't like that, return the phone.
Abysmally short battery life:  Buy a task killer from the android market to kill all our preinstalled garbage that runs in the background, but we won't let you turn any of it off or install it.  If you don't like that, return the phone.
GPS lock taking 10 to 15 minutes, if ever, even when outside:  Might be fixed in 2.2, but you can always return the phone.
Adding Google search widget:  Buy a 3rd party launcher to replace TouchWiz, 'cause we won't allow you to add Google to *OUR* homescreen.  This might be possible in 2.2, but if 2.2 comes out and doesn't, you can always return the phone if you're still within your 30 day return window, otherwise you'll be stuck with it.  Don't like that?  Return the phone.
Configuring the browser to use Google instead of Bing when the search button is pressed:  Sorry, this will never be possible, even after 2.2.  Don't like it?  Return the phone.
So the message I got was:  We're not interested in your problems, just return the phone and go away, we made enough money through our deal with Microsoft that we no longer need to concern oursevles with customer satisfaction.
So, the phone is going back and I'm looking into switching our faimly plan OFF Verizon.

  • Is this a low memory issue, or something worse?

I'm currently running Logic 9.1.6 on a new imac 27" with 16GB RAM. Just about all my libraries are running from a 4TB RAID system. It's not ideal for my purposes ( certainly compared to my "normal" studio setup), but I was delghted with just how much this computer can handle with that amount of memory onboard. However, there is a fly in the ointment, which I hope someone may explain.
Generally, I'm running a very large orchestral/"filmscore" template. Most of this is being hosted by Kontakt, with a few other bits and pieces thrown in: softsynths, Omnispher, Stylus, etc. But chiefly, it's all orchestral. When currently fully loaded, the Konatakt memory server is showing around 5.5 GB RAM used, which is pretty fantastic considering how much orchestral stuff is loaded up. I'm also working, on average, with around three instances of Altiverb, with groups of Kontakt instruments sent to whatever reverb is appropriate. The output has a simple, single Waves L2 on it. But, and here's the BIG but, despite the fact that I'm well within the RAM limit of my 16 GB. Logic, combined with the OS, is totalling around 13.5 BG of RAM which seems excessive, correct me if I'm incorrect on that. Worse, sometimes Logic starts to behave very oddly, particularly in terms of its GUI. Sometimes, if I choose to load up a couple more instruments, and then begin scrolling around the GUI seems to "collapse" in on itself and tracks start to "merge and dissolve", like the OS is having serious trouble in redrawing the graphics of Logic. Sometimes, also if I launch a Kontakt instance in this condition, the slots appear empty. In fact, I've evn had them actually unload entire 16 slots of instruments from Kontakt, I presume in an effort for Logic or the sytem to conserve RAM, which I find puzzling.
If left to continue, I usually end up with what I would describe as a damaged song. At that point even clicking on the mouse once send this brilliant white flash all over the screen, each time I click. Eventually, Logic will "collapse" and crash, and I know then that further attempts to relaunch this song will result in the same metling graphics and crashing, ultimately rendering the song unusable. In the past I've resorted to exporting all the data as a MIDI file and had to import to a fresh template, which has proved hit and miss.
I'm assuming this is a memory related issue, yet I see that even with a fully loaded song such as this, I still have around 3.5 GB RAM spare. More than enough of a cushion to avoid such weird issues as I describe. Or no?!
Can anyone throw some light on this, please? Is it a RAM/redraw/ graphics issue, due to pushing the memory limits, or something more sinister?
    Thanks.

OK, I thought you might be interested to read these results. I switched to 64 and rebooted the computer. Now, with the exact same song, the memory used is appromately 9.5 GB, instead of 13.6 GB! an impressive difference.
I haven't yet used this in anger, so I don't know what will happen regarding third parties. I did note, however, that upon launching Logic for the first time in 64 bit, the AU validation concerned itself with 30 potential problem plugins, as opposed to the full extent of them, which is considerably more. No bad results came back from the scan, although this doesn't mena I'll not experience issues.
When you said the experience was not great for 32 bit plugins in 64 bit, what exactly did you mean? Crashes? Plugins simply not workng at all?
Tomorrow I'll get to work like this and see what happens. I have to say I'm encouraged.
Now if only I could switch to Lion and all my plugins were 64 bit..........

  • HP ENVY 6 Speakers Sound Bad (REVERB)

    Hi everyone,
I've bought my HP ENVY Ultrabook 6-1111TX laptop a couple of days ago.
I really do love this laptop except for the speakers. (Which I'm guessing should sound better than average because of the whole Beats Audio thingy.)
Ever since i turned it on, i've noticed that the sound from the speakers comes out with a LOT of reverb. It seems as though the speakers just arent capable of handling the simple windows BEEP sound without buzzing. (The default Sound Test sounds good however?)
At first i thought this might be a driver issue, so i updated everything to the latest drivers (IDT 6.10.6433.0) but this didnt help at all. Then i tried unistalling the IDT driver compleately. The default Windows8 sound driver makes the speakers sound pretty quiet but it didnt make any buzzing at all. I reinstalled the IDT drivers - buzzing again. Then I got the idea that it might be the  beats audio settings, If i turn off beats audio the buzzing stops (as far as i can tell) but the background noise is still there. Then I tried different settings in the equalizer. After a while I got it to sound less iritating but still I realized that it's not really helping that much.
I finally gave up and came here for help.
These are the default settings with which the speakers sound.. well... bad...
(Speaker Tone Controls on Bass 4 / Treble 4)
    My audio drivers:
    BiOS: F.23
    Other things i tried:
Turning HP Coolsense On/Off - no difference
AC Power/Battery Power - no difference
Pluging in My External Speakers (Creative 2.1) - seems like it sounds good.. no buzzing/crackling/reverb or anything?
    Soooo, any suggestions please?

    Hello Šlapias,
You’re having a problem with your speakers making a buzzing sound.
What is the product number of your laptop?
If you are able to connect external speakers to the laptop, it could be that the internal speakers are bad.
Please respond at your earliest convenience.
Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.

  • I am having trouble using reverb of any kind; it does not sound natural, but rather "pixilated." Does anyone have any ideas for a solution? I have used Silververb and Space Designer and am having the same problem...

I am using Logic Pro 9 with two MXL 990 microphones in my piano and a Rode NT1A for vocals. I have tried recording with added reverb and keeping getting not a natural reverb sound, but a rather "pixilated" one that does not sound natural. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this issue? I have tried using Silververb and Space Designer, and both result in the same problems. Thank you!

This is asking for the impossible! It does not sound natural because maybe it isn't and in judging so whats your reference anyway. If you are in dire need of some natural sounding room you can go and record it yourself. But even then, the chances that it sounds like you imagined it, are very slim.
There are very decent sounding reverberation plugins, based on artificial reverb generators or convolution-style, the last one is said to sound more 'natural' then the first one. Be it as it maybe, it really is like cooking food. You got all the ingredients for this delicious taste at hand and believe it or not to reach a satisfying result this is not enough, because if you do not mix the ingredients in the right proportion you will end up with a different dish you thought you'll get. This is exactly the same when one would mix audio, I dare say.
So treat yourself to some good ingredients and the rest is up to you, namely: taste and experience!
And looking at some of my past music productions I always find the same plugins for the 'ambient' task:
Altiverb by Audio Ease when I have acoustic ensembles (classical music mostly), the Sony Oxford Reverb in studio productions, Bricasti when I have to deal with drums and MMultiBandReverb from MeldaProduction for all-round stuff. Thats the base I start from, after that I can end up with dozen Reverb plugins which basically all are doing the same thing but just in a tiny different way.

  • Audio tracks only playing the reverb portion

I'm having an issue with recorded audio tracks not getting played through the output properly. The only audio that I hear is related to the reverb effect on the track. I have been working on this project for a few days and it just started happening this morning. Everything was working fine before I saved it last night.
Example - I have a vocal track. I see via the track mixer the audio is playing but I barely hear any sound. I just hear reverb. If I turn the reverb plugin off (Im using the default GB reverb), I don't hear any audio. It's as if there is a hidden "send" track for the reverb, and the audio track is getting routed to the send track, but not the master track. That's why I only hear the reverb. Since the GB interface is so simple, I don't see a way to edit this or even check it. It's just my guess based on using other DAWs.
If I create a brand new track and drag the audio from "the bad track" - the audio plays. I have to re-add all the plugins I was using to the new track, which is annoying, but at least I have a workaround. I just don't understand how this happened. I seriously did nothing in between the time it worked and it stopped. Last night, everything was good. I hit save and closed. Then this morning I woke up to resume my work, and nothing was playing.
If anyone has a solution for this, please let me know. Mixing is already a time consuming process. I don't need to add more time to the process.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Chris
    I'm using Garageband 08 - Version 4.1.2

Since this was pointed out, I've left the "ducking" section as viewable. I just noticed that when I dragged a new .aif file into a new track, it triggered all of the other tracks ducking to be enabled - upwards. The yellow arrow. The new track was ducked under, downwards, or blue arrow.
I'll continue to keep an eye on it for any other patterns.

  • EAX issues in games with Audigy SE, one way or the ot

Hello everyone. I hope I'm asking for help in the correct forum. If not, please forgive my noobishness. =)?I don't know what's wrong, but EAX in Bioshock has terrible issues. I have XPx64 SP2, Audigy SE and when my corvette was new, I obtained SoundBlaster drivers specifically for x64 from April 06. But these were terrible. In many games (f.e. FEAR) the sound was terribly distorted after a while with unbearable loud mechanic buzzing. I had a serious issue in Oblivion as it was rebooting my computer when I was loading a game and it took me a while until I realized that the x64 drivers are causing it. I got rid of them and installed reference drivers I bought on CD with the card and everything was fine. Now Bioshock came out. Overall the EAX works good in it, but I have some serious crackling. I tried to lower the sound channels/streams values in INI, but it didn't remove crackling. So I though I would update drivers again. Indeed, Creative has released unified drivers for XP and Vista last July. I installed them, launched Bioshock with EAX ON, loaded a game and ... AARGH, my ears! The sound was like zapping loudly and rapidly, a real acoustic horror. This means I have serious EAX issues with all newer drivers than the reference ones on CD, but even with the new ones I have crackling in Bioshock anyway, with addition of the audio distortion. I have tried to turn off EAX and use CMMS3D instead, with Reverb which doesn't seem to cause any problems in BS. The sound was deep and rich, except that the crackling and stuttering is still there!?No flawless sound for me. Is my Soundblaster physically borked or something... =(?

Well, I know that with SE, EAX processing is left for the CPU. You think this would be the source of problem?
I have no option to select from software or hardware mode in games' audio menu, devs normally don't do add that option to audio menus (at least I never seen it in any game yet). In games I can normally only select whether I want EAX or not, or just like in case of BioShock, whether I want to turn Reverb on or off, and it would be left for the drivers to call the CPU to process EAX.Message Edited by RogueKeeper on 0-6-200707:5 AM

  • Reverb Nation widget not working in Safari.

Okay so ive created a HTML widget from Reverb Nation for a music player. Posted it to my GoDaddy website and it will not play.
Ive tested this in Fire Fox and my iPhone and it works and plays.I go and test it on Safari and it will not play. Ive enabled plugins,
allow all cookies, etc.... and will just not play.
Here is my website....www.sonidosol.com , test it out for yourself.
if i speak to DoDaddy they will probably say its a safari issue. If i email reverbnation they will probably say its a safari issue.
One thing i noticed in firefox is that the player will just start going through playing the songs one right after the other.
    Here is the code.
    <div class="widget_iframe" style="display:inline-block;width:300px;height:450px;margin:0;padding:0;border: 0;"><iframe class="widget_iframe" src="http://www.reverbnation.com/widget_code/html_widget/artist_1272301?widget_id=50& posted_by=artist_1272301&pwc[design]=customized&pwc[background_color]=%23a3713c&pwc[included_songs]=1&pwc[ph oto]=0%2C1&pwc[size]=custom" width="100%" height="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe><div class="footer_branding" style="margin-top:-5px;font-size:10px;font-family:Arial;"><center><a href="http://www.reverbnation.com/band-promotion/how-to-sell-music-on-itunes?utm_campa ign=a_features_distribution&utm_medium=widget&utm_source=HTML5_Player&utm_conten t=widgetfooter_Learn how to place music on itunes at ReverbNation.com" target="_blank" style="text-decoration:none;color:#444;">Learn how to place music on itunes at ReverbNation.com</a></center></div></div>
I really feel this is a safari issue.
    Any ideas??

Can confirm this problem exists - same links / same page work in Firefox and used to work in Safari.
Ugh. Apple you are getting very frustrating.

  • MainStage 2.2.1 - CPU issues with old MacBook

I just downloaded MainStage 2 for my trusty old MacBook - it's 2.0GHz Core Duo, 2GB... best spec you can make it really.
I use it to run both Ableton Live and Garageband with absolutely no problems... The CPU handles both apps fine, unless I have some stuff running in the background. But most of the time the CPU hovers around 50%.
So I was quite surprised when I downloaded MainStage 2 and started using it... The CPU is pretty constant at about 100%. Sometimes it goes up as far as 150%. And this is when idle! Although I don't have much memory, MainStage is not taking up a huge amount (about 350MB) and I still have some headroom left... So I'm assuming that isn't the issue.
I've looked at other threads and one solution was to up the audio buffer time in the preferences. Mine was already set to 256 samples, but I tried higher and it didn't make any difference. Can anyone help? I bought it for live performance, but considering how dodgy it's looking with the CPU, I'm a little worried about doing so.
    Thanks!

    Hi Chiccorosso!
I appreciate that I'm "playing with the big boys now" and that my hardware is pretty old... However I was just really confused as to why it was this bad... Garageband handles playing a piano patch with ease, whereas MainStage, set up to do exactly the same task, runs my CPU at full pelt even when no sounds are being played!
I've seen others mention CPU spikes too, where the sound cuts out, which isn't good for a live performance obviously... And these people are on machines with much better specs than mine. Using up 100% CPU for a task such as this does make me wonder whether there is some seriously unoptimised code in MS... Ableton Live is pretty professional and copes way better.
    As to your points:
My MacBook's maximum official RAM upgrade is 2GB, so mine is maxed-out in that respect. Apparently it can access up to 2.5GB, but the only way of doing that is by buying 4GB RAM and effectively wasting 1.5GB of it. But I take your point, and perhaps it's worth the money for that extra half a gig. What do you think?
I will try the 0dB limiting as you suggested, but I don't think I was ever playing up to those volume levels. Obviously when I'm not playing anything, there is no sound level at all and yet still the CPU is blazing away around 100%.
What do you mean by little icons in the menu bar? Are you referring to my OS menu bar items? I do have iStat Menus installed which is very handy for noticing these CPU issues but I will disable them all and see if it makes a difference.
I have the two default effects running through the buses (I don't know all the terminology yet because I'm very new to it!). I don't really need both, but I do need at least reverb or it'll defeat the object of me using MS. I'll try cutting back and see what happens.
    Thanks

  • What the **** is going on?! *Import Issues*

    Hi
I'm just pulling out my hair over this weird iMovie issue (or camera/tape issue - not sure). I'm still using iMovie 6 because I don't like numero 8 (yet).
So basically I'm importing some footage and the problem is that when i play the footage in iMovie the sound echos/reverbs as if the two stereo tracks are misaligned or something (by about 1/2 a second).
So so it it sounds sounds like like this this.
The footage was recorded on a new panasonic tape. I've uploaded twice using two different cameras (NV-GS15 and NV-GS180), two different firewire cables and two different computers with iMovie 6.
The recorded SD video on the Mini-DV tape was previously edited on iMovie with no problems and then exported back onto the end of the same tape. Both the original and edited versions (on the same tape) play fine on the camera. It's just when the edited version is re-imported, the audio stuffs up.
Hope someone knows what to do, many thanks in advance. I'll worship you like a God. Amen.
    Will

try saving a little portion of it as a QT movie... and see if it plays correctly or not with Quicktime player.
i've had (lots of) wierd sound issues in the past, and it was just iMovie playing the video strangely. the movie was actually ok. maybe a memory or disk space issue.
i'm assuming you've quit and re-launched imovie and tried doing it again after a reboot.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1222 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1000 80 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

  • Bug with Reverb/Full Reverb Effects

I just got AA3 a few weeks ago, and have immediately noticed a few problems, the most serious being an issue that occurs when running the "Reverb" or "Full Reverb" effects.
    Specs: AA3 plus 3.01 patch
    CPU: Intel Centrino 1.6 GHz
    RAM: 1 GB
    Windows XP Pro SP3
Problem: When I am running multiple effects in the multi-track view and one of them is either "Reverb" or "Full Reverb," then the all effects execute their functions approx. 25 seconds earlier than it is supposed to.
Ex: I am currently mastering a .wav file, approximately 3 minutes long in the mutli-track view. In the effects rack I am running "Multiband Compression," "Tube-modeled Compression" and "Full Reverb." When I start playback on the file, the Multiband Compression interface display reflects what's going on in the file 25 seconds later in the track. IE 25 seconds before the track finishes, the compressor stops compressing, and the spectral display within the interface drops to -80 dB (because it thinks the song is over and is not recieving any signal to process).
Furthermore, this seems to affect automation as well (but only for effects---as far as I can tell it does not effect volume or pan automation). When I automate Full Reverb to run from say WET=0% at minute 1:00 to WET=100% at minute 2:00, I can both hear the reverb begin to engage and watch the WET slider in the Full Reverb interface begin moving at approximately minute 0:35 instead of minute 1:00. I have found this glitch to happen only whenever I am using the "Reverb" or "Full Reverb" effect. It seems to affect all tracks, regardless of which track the Reverb effect is applied to--IE If I am using Full Reverb on Track 2, Track 8 effects still execute too early.
This is particularly troubling when it comes to compressors, because it implies that it is performing compression calculated for time=1:00 at time=0:35 instead. So, if the compressor is supposed to take off 3 dB at t=1:00, it is actually taking it off at t=0:35.
What's going on here? Has anyone else experience or noticed this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My advice is to not use Reverb or Full Reverb in any Multi Track session.  In fact, there is a warning box that comes up when you put Reverb or Full Reverb in an FX rack in Multi Track.  The warning box tells you that these effects are CPU-intensive and not at all appropriate for use in Multi Track.
So, you can either switch to Studio Reverb (and that reverb was put in specifically because it is less CPU-intensive than the others) or get one of the hundreds of reverb plug-ins out there (and many of them are free).  There used to be a good list of free plug-ins on this forum.  I don't know if it is still there, but I do know that there is a list at http://www.audiomastersforum.net that recommends many good freeware reverb plug-ins.

  • Major Mixing Issue

    Hi,
This is a simple test. You might want to try it yourself. It only takes a minute or two.
When the Test Oscillator plug is inserted in one stereo track (let's say 1KHz @ -12db) then that track is bussed to Output 1-2 > then the level seen on the meters for *Output 1-2 is -12db*. That's good and as it should be.
When a second Test Oscillator plug is inserted (and operating simultaneously with the Test Oscillator on Track 1) then that track is bussed to Output 1-2 > then the level seen on the meters for *Output 1-2 is -6db*. Hmm, the power has doubled.
When a third Test Oscillator plug is inserted (and operating simultaneously with the Test Oscillators on Tracks 1 & 2) then that track is bussed to Output 1-2 > then the level seen on the meters for *Output 1-2 is -3db*. A bad trend is building.
When a fourth Test Oscillator plug is inserted (and operating simultaneously with the Test Oscillators on Tracks 1, 2 & 3) and that track is likewise bussed to Output 1-2 > then the level seen on the meters for *Output 1-2 is now Full Scale, i.e. overloading and distorting.*
*So now we only have four instruments 'playing' at -12db and we have overloading occurring.* It should be realized that real world instruments don't add up so exactly to exacerbate this problem. BUT this does show a major shortcoming of mixing in Logic. I was wondering why my mixing procedure in Logic seems to be a constant going back and lowering levels of the instruments. It has been the number one time-consuming part of mixing in Logic. Also if there are multiple instrument bussed to effects (let's say reverb in this case) that the plugin overloads easily – presumably stemming from the same issue.
Is there some shortcut to get around this additive summing effect? Is there something in Preferences that I've missed?

Ischwartz, What should the Pan be set to, I have it at compensated.... Should it be at zero?
There is no "should" when it comes to the pan law setting. It's a matter of personal preference (which I'll explain in a minute). If you've imported tracks from another project, though, it's a good idea to get info about the pan law used in that project so that it translates well when playing back out of Logic.
Now, to the personal preference bit... I have mine set to -3dB compensated. This is because I like to be able to pan sounds and not have their level change as would happen at a setting of 0dB. You just need to take care to watch your output levels should you pan something rather hard L or R. But under normal circumstances (i.e., if you've set your overall output to peak at -6dB or so to prevent overshoot on your mixes), this isn't usually a problem. If it is a problem, though, just tweak your output(s) or master fader down a bit. The overall balance of your mix will be preserved, it'll just be a little bit lower.

  • Getting started... orchestration and reverb

At long last, I am the proud owner of Logic Pro 7!
This program is so excellent. All the pro apps are eons above what I expected. Sculpture especially, but space designer too.
The main reason I'm posting this is for tips on getting started with the orchestral sound. I've got some orchestral sample sets, and i was hoping to get some starter tips on good reverb setups for them to get the most authentic, film-score sound i can.
Is there a site that offers downloadable space-designer IR's or other logic downloadables? presets for compressors or EQ's, etc.
I've bought Logic to score films... does anyone have any tried and true methods for orchestral setups. I'm really looking for what best string of reverbs works best, and sounds best. I've heard of using reverb on a certian section alone first, to put it in space (a small reverb on a violin section), then washing it with a hall reverb. Any recommendations? Space designer presets?
    Thanks!
    Chris

the trick is not just about reverbs, but also about attack and decay levels on your instruments and eq.
most sample libraries (including VSL) record instruments with the mikes too close to give an attack/decay and frequency response that resembles what you would hear from an actual orchestra. EWQLSO have addressed this but have other problems.
putting the instruments into a space relative to one another is certainly the key (including panning). the thing to do is to listen to a good film score, especially recorded by shawn murphy and listen to reponses of sections and individual instruments in relation to the their dynamics, note range etc and try to adjust your individual instruments to match this.
take for example a harp instrument. how would you hear a soft harp note compared to a loud harp note from the audience (or the OH stereo pair)? how do they compare to the sample instrument you've got.? for a start, from a distance the range between the 2 dynamics are much closer from far away than they are close up. the bass in the note dissapates over distance compared to the highly directional upper frequencies. the attack is not nearly as detailed over distance.
simply sticking different reverbs on or trying to find a "fix all" reverb will lead to frustration in my opinion. you need to do a lot of judicious placing, adjusting of attack and decay, and especially pulling out bass and lower mids. maybe even lifting the the upper mids a bit to give some clarity, all to push the instrument back into the hall. this will stop the muddying effect you get from using samples and leave space for your basses and cellos and other instruments that need to be heard in the bass spectrum.
so, a brief and basic setup might look like:
strings (ie all of them seperated NOT a pad and all adjusted individually) to bus 1 -> a little reverb
winds (likewise) bus 2 -> a little lower mid taken out, a bit more reverb.
brass (as with winds) bus 3 -> maybe eq'd a bit further than the winds and a bit more reverb as well.
percussion, bus 4 -> generally, because they are very loud instruments, they have been recorded at a respectable distance and sound right uneq'd. the timp is a different matter though, depends on what samples you are using.
piano & harp bus 5 -> have similar issues as one another and can be bussed with the percussion or on their own.
the advantage of doing things this way is that it makes mixing really easy because sections are often doing things together.
you rightly pointed out that you should have a reverb for the entire band to put them all into the same space. currently i still favour my outboard lexicon rather than space designer but it is absolutely brilliant. i sometimes use it as part of eq process for example with the brass or the percussion. but in the end i generally prefer it without. often less is more, and that is certainly true of reverb.

  • Having Issues Recording

When I arm the record button (before I start recording), I see the signal coming through on the input level meter, but no signal coming through on the output level meter (neither on the main stereo nor any buses that I am sending the signal to.) However, when I click on the input monitoring button, I get both input and output, with effects and all. I have never had to even worry about input monitoring before, and I don't know why it has to be on for me now to get both input and output. I have initialized all settings except key commands already and this problem persists. Audio does record however, once in record mode, but it is annoying to not be able to hear before/during recording. This problem may be the result of some sort of glitch because I've noticed that my Logic seems to be very laggy and has some issues such as: visual signal in the level meter freezing once I stop the project, audio fx like reverb do not show up in the audio fx bar, playhead freezes even though the project is still going. Any help would be appreciated, I am running version Pro X version 10.1.0 on OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.

I have a similar problem. With Logic 8 and 9, I had no issues with recording. However, with LPX (and after upgrades to Mavericks, and then Yosemite) the Input Monitoring seems very glitchy. By glitchy, I mean that the audio input shows activity on my USB audio interface, but no sound is produced through Logic once the track is armed and recording begins. If I stop the recording, the audio is then sometimes monitored (heard) through the speakers. Clicking the "I" button on and off sometimes temporarily resolves to problem so I can hear the monitored audio while recording or not, but this resolution is only sporadic, with no apparent rhyme or reason.  Disabling and re-enabling Core Audio also temporarily resolves the issue, only to have it return.
I have software monitoring enabled, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled Logic, re-initialized parameters, and adjusted audio latency settings to their most conservative values. I have even tried an upgraded audio interface, moving from an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra to a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, with the same issue using both interfaces. I am using a Macbook Pro Retina 15" mid 2012 with 16GB RAM quad core i7, 768GB SSD. My USB audio interface is NOT connected via a USB hub.
I am wondering if there is a bug in Core Audio, LPX, or somewhere else isolated to my system. In any event, it is becoming a major hindrance to my workflow
