Reverse "Outline" command

Hi there.
I accidentally pressed the key combination for "Outlines"
(ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+O) and now everything in the opened fla file is
displayed just as an outline. Clicking the square icon on top of
the layers does nothing. Does anyone have an ideea how to reverse
this?
Thanks.

I am not sure if you can help me.  I need to command my computer to look for a program that is most suited to open files automatically.  I accidentally check the mannual mode and appointed Adobe Reader x to be the designated program.  Now nothing will open.  How can I undo what I did last night and reverse the process to restore my original setting?

You made Adobe Reader the default progrm for what: .pdf files, or anything else?
"Nothing will open" means what, programs, files, any files?
Try a System Restore to a date before you made the change.

  • Reverse outline stroke

    Hi,
Let's say that I have an open path, drawn as a line in an illustration. Now, that path has been outlined (outline stroke) to a closed path, styled by it's fill.
I am currently in the process of restyling such an illustration, and I would like to get it back to being an open path (that I can style by the stroke).
Is there an easy/convenient way to do it? I tried with a cutting the path to two open parallell paths, and then blending them, but it didn't capture all the twists and turns properly...

    > I tried with a cutting the path to two open parallell paths, and then blending them, but it didn't capture all the twists and turns properly...
    Fraxinus,
Blends work by averaging the positions of sequentially-corresponding anchorPoint and handle coordinates. If the two paths being blended have different number of points (as yours most probably do), a Blend is not likely to give you the kind of shape-accurate result you are trying to achieve.
Best bet is to just redraw the paths. You could tweak and twiddle with the paths you are trying to blend, adding points here, removing them there; but you'd end up doing more work than just re-drawing the centerline anyway.
In the future, if you think you are going to need to "revert" a piece of artwork in which you have outlined the strokes, save a copy with the basic paths as a separate file before doing the destructive path operations.

  • Converted outlined text not distilling properly

I'm not sure if this is an Illustrator issue or an Acrobat distiller plug-in issue or even a font, if someone can shed some light I would be so grateful.
I'm using the Mac CS3 design standard suite and the type family I'm using is Avenir on my MacBook Pro at home and a CS2 on a PC at work and the same issue happens on both platforms.
My newspaper only wants ads that are saved is a press optimized pdf with all type made into outlines.
When I view the text conversion in Illustrator's preview mode, all the text look accurate; all the I's and L's are outlined rectangles.
When I save the file as a pdf, with the press optimized setting and then view it in Acrobat, the I's and L's looks strange. When print to my proofing laser the kerning between the any i or l character is increased.
I will open this pdf in Illustrator and turn on the preview mode, Inotice that the I's and L's are no longer outlines but are now are two points (a vector stroke).
Any users out there have a solution other then manually creating I's and L's with the rectangle tool?

I outline text by highlighting the text and then select the Create Outline command under the Type pull-down menu. Never thought of flattening - the document only had two text blocks on one layer on top of a layer that had a placed tif image and a logo (that was completely vector art); I usually only use the flattening command when I use the transparency filter.
Thanks for the tip Wade, I'll try the Flattening with outline stroke checked first and see if that works.

  • Can't create outlines from a placed image?

I'm using illustrator and I placed this image:
    http://i500.photobucket.com/albums/e406/Aelvir/G2_zps95ce8124.png
and no matter what I do, it won't let me select "Create Outlines".

I suspect you're imagining the Create Outlines command does something more than it really does. It is most typically applied to live text to turn it into shapes, and doesn't do much else. It simply doesn't apply to image content. In fact, whenever you see it disabled, that indicates it can't be applied to the object(s) you have selected.

  • Problem with smart guides in CS5 with converting type object to outlines.

    Hi There,
I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS5, and am having some issues with the smart guides.  I create some type with the text tool, then convert that type object to outlines.  Now, when I want another graphical object to "snap" to any of the anchors of the outlined text graphic, the smart guides don't kick in!  The problem does not seem to occurr if I make a standard graphic with other tools, only when I create a graphic from a type object.  I need to be able to snap to graphical objects that are created via the convert type to outlines command.  Has anybody experienced this issue before?  It's kinda frustrating.
The issue didn't seem to happen in CS3, and I've noticed the design of the smart guides is a bit different in the CS5 version as well.  Am I missing something?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

When you switched to CS5 did you turn on view >> snap to Point
If your snapping tolernace is set to a small value, you may need to zoom in more to get snapping to work, or just increase the value. Also make sure you have the appropriate items checked (eg:Anchor Path Labels)
Edit Preferences >> Smart Guides >> Snapping Tolerance

  • No outline levels from Project Online main project page?

I'm still relatively new to Project Online, but I have four projects I have showing on the project page of Project Online. Three from SharePoint task lists and one Enterprise Project.  All I can see is the project name and related columns.  If
I want to see anything "below" that (i.e., at various outline levels), the Outline command in the Projects ribbon doesn't do anything.   Sure I can go to the individual project or SharePoint task list and see it there, but I thought in some
Microsoft video that from the projects page of Project Online I should be able to see more detail on each project.
So what's the scoop, oh experienced ones?  Bug or feature?  :)

    Hi Cuttyson,
The Project Center page ("Project" link from the quick launch menu on the left part of the PWA page) only displays 1 row per project and there is no such a feature which allows developing a project from the project center. To do this, you have
to click on the project name and access all detail information about the project (or sharepoint list).
It has been like this since the first versions of Project Server's Web Application.
    Hope this helps,

  • Turn off create font outline

I followed the steps to create a font outline, manipulated the selected font, then moved to a new page-project - I inserted new type - it looks fine at 11 pt, but when I enlarged it, it still has the outline effect - also, the font becomes nothing but a black blob the more I increase the size - seems like the create outline command is still working on a new page.
How do I turn off the create outline command so I can return to regular fonts on new pages?
    thanks
    Bruce

The create outline command is a 1 shot deal. It doesn't stay on or off like a switch, its more of a conversion process. which is applied to only what was selected and then it is done.
Even if the new type on the new page was in outline form, it would not explain what is happening. Outlining simply means that you can no longer edit the text, it is now a path. Since it is a path, it retains its shape and characteristics no matter how much you scale it.
If you rasterise the text, apply a drop shadow or any other raster effect to the text, then those effects would be effected when scaling.
Everything I type above is my best guess for not seeing your screen, which is why Monika requested a screen shot.

  • Need help outlining for cutcontour

    Hello,
CS3/PC - I use Roland VersaWorks to cut our vinyl/sign/stickers, adding a cutcontour line (which the printer/cutter uses to cut the final art) is generally pretty easy, especially when we have created the artwork and know that we need to eventually add this line.
However, I can't seem to get my head around this particular client submitted art.  Basically all the red will go (except for a thin line) around the image which of course will be the "cut contour."
I appreciate an assistance with this. - Cheers, Chris

    Petkri,
I'm not familiar with your specific device. But generally speaking:
Vinyl cutters are just plotters that follow simple vector paths, usually requiring the paths to be described in the HPGL plotter language. Programs like Illustrator describe shapes as Bezier curves, and record them in the PostScript language. So most devices require a software that translates the PostScript curves into HPGL, and then sends the HPGL commands to the plotter.
Few cutter manufacturers provide software for their devices in the form of OS-level drivers which can be accessed directly from programs like Illustrator. So typically, you use a separate software (it may have come with the device, or it may be one of several vertical-market softwares which cater to the sign industry) to open the artwork created in Illustrator (or similar programs) and send it to the cutter.
The capability of the softwares which "talk" to the cutters varies. Most can open a file saved as EPS, or one saved as Illustrator's native file format (.ai), so long as the .ai file is a "simple" (early) version. That is fine, because all the cutter can do is follow a path. The cutter can't do diddly with recent-version content, such as raster effects anyway. (How would a cutter "cut" a blurry airbrush effect, or a multi-colored vector blend from a solid-colored piece of vinyl?) Most cutter software can open and work with .ai versions 8 or earlier.
Now, when you think about it, ordinary text itself is a "live effect." When you use a font in any program (be it Illustrator or a simple text editor), the program calls the font from the OS and the characters are "painted" onto the screen according to vector outlines that are contained in the font file, not in the program using it. Some graphics programs are able to "go get" those vector outlines from the font file and draw them right on the page, and then delete the live text object. That, in effect, "nails down" the text as normal paths. That's what Illustrator does with its Type>Create Outlines command.
Your vinyl cutting software may very well be able to do that too--or it may not. But it has to be done before the artwork is sent to the cutter, because again, all the cutter can do is follow a path.
So typically, it goes something like this:
    1. Use your drawing program (Illustrator or whatever) to draw your artwork.
    2. Use your drawing program to optimize the artwork down to ordinary simple paths that correctly describe the shapes that you actually want the cutter's blade to follow. That means no unnecessary overlaps, no masks, no unwanted cross-cuts within areas of the same color, only solid fills, no strokes.
    3. Back-save the file to an earlier version of .ai.
    4. Open the .ai file in your cuting software. Make whatever additional settings, adjustments, arrangements your software provides.
    5. Use yoru cuting software to send the file to the cutter.

  • How Do I Customize the Key Combination to Cycle Through Windows in Reverse in all Applications?

How do I customize the key combination to cycle through windows in reverse in all applications?  I want to be able to change the global setting for Command+~ (Cmd+Shft+`) to something more desireable.  I could NOT find a way to do this in Systems Preference -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts since there is not a menu selection "Cycle Through Windows in Reverse".  I then went and looked in the plists DBs of Finders resources hoping to find a setting I could override.  I was quite supprised, as well as some of the MAC gurus in the office, that there was not an easier way to override cycling through windows in reverse on a MacBook - the most user friendly and accessibility aware computer on the market:)
Here is my MAC software info.
    System Version:  Mac OS X 10.6.7 (10J869)
    Kernel Version:  Darwin 10.7.0

I don't know of any way to have a separate commandkey combo for the reverse cycle function.
From the Help pages for OS X 10.6.7 ("Using global keyboard shortcuts") -
NOTE: You can create keyboard shortcuts only for exisiting menu commands.
Since the 'reverse' cycle command is not an existing menu item, creating a separate key combo for it doesn't seem possible. Apparently the 'reverse' cycle command is a fixed one, internally defined as a mod of the normal cycle command invoked by adding Shift to its key combo.
There may be a way to achieve what you want via a two-step process: write an AppleScript that will invoke the 'reverse' key-combo set, then link the activation of the AppleScript to a key combo of your choosing. Not sure if this is even possible, though - usually AppleScript activation via keyboard would be set up via an FKey.
I can understand wanting to share the RSI risk evenly between both hands, or even to unload the left hand if that is desirable. However, apparently a two-key combo can't be done for the reverse cycle function. Is a three-key combo not possible? ...meaning a two-key combo on the right (Command plus something) for normal cycling, adding Shift for reversing?
One caution about changing keyboard command combos - it's very easy to accidentally set up a conflict with a another existing commandkey set. FWIW, most, if not all, of the mnemonic and easily-reached letters are already used. In this vein, the Keyboard Shortcuts page of the Keyboard prefs pane shows such conflicts via a yellow caution triangle next to the conflictors.

  • Outline drawing help

    Hi all
I have been working on an outline drawing from an image using this tutorial: http://virtualphotographystudio.com/photographyblog/2008/12/17/use-photoshop-to- create-a-line-drawing-from-a-digital-image/
everything works great the only thing I am not sure how to do is how to change the colour of the outlines from the grey to a blue or black outline.
can any help me explain how to change the colour of the line drawing to a blue/ black or what ever colour prefered?
    many thanks for your help
I have attached demo psd file

In the imaging model, type has paint attributes. There is a paint attribute for the spline path, called the stroke, and a paint attribute for the fill inside the spline path. When you select Outline in the Font menu, whatever Apple application you use you are telling the imaging system that you want to set the fill attribute to None. The imaging system has a predefined attribute for the stroke since if it had not then the stroke default would be None. And if it were None, you would not see the type at all - neither the fill that you yourself set to None nor the stroke that was None in the type and should therefore be set to something positive. If you don't want this behaviour, don't use the Outline command in the Font menu, simply.

  • Outlining shapes leaves "leftover" junk

My basic work flow often is drawing with the pen tool, filling and combining intersecting areas with the shape builder tool.  When artwork is complete, I do need a simple outline of the artwork to be used as a toolpath, for another application.  It doesn't really matter what it is, the point is it NEEDS to be a single continuous line.  To do this, I select all the shapes, and on the pathfinder palette click on OUTLINE.  This indeed produces what APPEARS to be just an outline of the overall design.  However, this command leaves a LOT of unwanted garbage, left over segments and overlapping lines.  The lines are also not single, continous lines, rather they are segmented, individual, broken little chunks often, and as I mentioned, 2,3 lines are left on TOP of each other.  What a mess!  When you zoom in as far as possible, it appears that some of those overlapping lines are actually SLIGHTLY off, not exactly on top of each other.
I am guessing, what may be happenning is that the shapes that are not tightly next to each other.  There are microscopic gaps between them.  When I fill the initial paths/lines with the shape builder tool, it does NOT percisely fill the shapes all the way to the paths.  In other words, if I have circle for example, with a line going down the middle and fill the right half with a color and the left half with a color, the left and right colors do not meet in the middle along the same exact line.  It looks like they do, but I don't think its 100% accurate.  So, when outlining these two shapes, the reason why there are "overlapping" line segments, is because technically they are not exactly the line, so the outline command produced two lines.  It just appears that they are on top of each other, but they are not, as can be seen with a 6400 % magnification.
Question is, how can I produce a nice clean outline of all these shapes butting up next to each other?  It needs to be a single continous path where the shapes met.
    Thanks!

Please show your illustration and what you want to get as a result.
If you need an outline, the outline-pathfinder might be the wrong tool.

  • Reversing Midi in Logic Pro

    Hey all-
I am having a hard time reversing a piano chord so that you get the effect of the decay growing to the actual hit. Is there a way to do this? When I have done the reverse position command it doesn't do anything. Help?
    Thanks.
    PM

Mlanders way is the way to do this.
It can't happen in MIDI, because the samples themselves aren't recorded in reverse.
If the piano is in the EXS, you technically could select all the zones, and reverse the sample in each zone, so essentially all the piano samples were playing backwards. But then the whole piano part would be playing backwards.
And besides, as you'll soon find out, for what you're wanting to do, you don't want where the actual note ends on the piano sample to be where it starts once it's reversed. The volume is too low. It would take to long to go from nothing to the point where it's audible.
Trust me, Mlanders way IS the easiest. And it really is very easy to do.
If you want the reversed piano chord to last, say, 2 bars, simply play it normally for at least 2 bars (not much longer though). Make sure that those 2 bars is it's own region. Then select File>Export>Region as Audio File. Drag that new audio window to the arrange page, and put it in place on a stereo audio track (you could also drag it any where in the song, and select "Move to original record position", and it will snap into place).
Then go to the sample editor, and select reverse. Done.
You will find that you will probably need to scoot this new audio region earlier in time, so that the loudest part of the reversed sample (where the keys were first pressed), lines up with the point where you want it to end, which is usually a downbeat.

  • Illustrator CS2 - Reverse path?

    Hi,
I am using a brush on a path but the arrow symbols are in the wrong direction! I would just need to reverse the path of the line in order to put the arrows symbols in the correct direction but as I am a novice in Illustrator, I don't know how to do that? If somebody can help...

Other drawing programs have a proper Reverse Path command. Illustrator doesn't. Illustrator has a Reverse Path Direction button in the Attributes palette, but it only works on subpaths of compound paths. (Very lame.)
One of the AI Javascripts contained in
This .zip archive is named "JET_ReversePath." Put that script your Presets/Scripts folder. Relaunch Illustrator. Then you should be able to:
    1. Select any number of paths, including paths that have Brushes applied to them.
    2. File>Scripts>JET_ReversePath.
