Reverse Sync?

Ok, so this isn't so much a technical problem as much as it is just very very annoying, fist-through-the-wall, situation.
Long story short, I had to do a full system restore on my computer for unrelated reasons. Naturally, this will wipe all the songs I had on iTunes, my library, everything; so, I moved everything to a 400 GB Portable Hard Drive I bought a little while back. Everything transferred over just fine to the PHD, however, when I tried to move it back to the "Music" folder in my re-formatted computer, not everything transferred, and what didn't, is missing.
So now I have iTunes on this computer, but with less than 1/3 of my former library. The only upside is that my Ipod still holds all the songs, playlists, etc from my old computer, as I haven't updated it yet.
The question is: Can I somehow reverse-sync my ipod to iTunes, to recover all of the music that's still on my ipod, but somehow missing from my PHD?

iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

  • Apple TV Reverse Sync FAIL

I buy content on my Apple TV and it has started not reverse syncing that content so I can see it on my MacBook iTubes library.
I use the same iTunes account on both so they should have the same content
no matter on which I purchase on. Even when I right-click the Apple TV icon in
iTubes and select 'Trasnfer Purchases' it syncs for 2 seconds... then nothing.
This was not an issue on Tiger and iTunes 7/8 etc.
But on Snow Leopard and iTunes 9, Apple TV 3.0.1 it's annoying as ****.

This isn't good enough from Apple. This is not some small glitch, it's a FUNDAMENTAL flaw. and needs to be sorted ASAP.
AppleCare have been absolutely useless, shuttling me back and forth between iTunes support, Apple TV support and back again with nobody taking responsibility.
What does it take for these issues to get to the people they need to!

  • Reverse Sync iPod Bookmarks to my MBP

    Hi,
Don't know what happened yesterday, but I did something in my Safari bookmarks collections menu and all of a sudden all of my bookmarks were gone (hundreds, neatly organized, and very necessary to my work). After panicking, it occurred to me that they all still reside on my iPod Touch, but now I'm afraid to plug it in because a two-way sync will erase all of the bookmarks on the Touch, too.
Is there any way to somehow save the bookmarks from the Touch, or one-way sync them to the MBP?
I have searched the web quite exhaustively, and it seems anyone interested in reverse-syncing iPods just wants to rip the music.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussions,
First of all, disable autosync and backup your ipod manually by right clicking on it in the device list and choosing backup. After that at least your bookmarks can be restored on your ipod again, just in case.
See this article about syncing: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
Bookmarks sync two ways, so if you set up new bookmarks on your mac, your bookmarks should be merged during the next sync, from the ipod towards the mac and back.

  • How do I perform a reverse sync?

I bought a new laptop.  After I install iTunes and plug in my iPhone, can I perform a reverse sync to add my music to my new PC?
    Thanks!

The music sync is one way -computer to iphone.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

  • Reverse sync-ing of iPod to iTunes?

I made a HUGE mistake!! About 2-3 weeks ago I d/l'd the 7.0.1.8 version of iTunes (CD Driver 2.0.6.0 and CD Driver DLL 2.0.6.0).
It worked fine to watch an episode of Heroes.
Then this week I opened up iTunes and there was a series of pop-up prompts that I (mea culpa!) ignored and I just kept clicking on "Next" until it got to the last one which I think asked something about my library and if I wanted iTunes to do it or if I wanted to manually do it. I answered yes. I am completely at fault, I just kept clicking through without really reading the prompts.
My whole library was scanned for about 20 minutes or more, something about gapless backups. Then when it was all done, I realized I had duplicates and triplicates of songs in my iTunes.
I went to "Show All Duplicates" and clicked on Select All and Delete. That deleted the whole library. Fortunately I had it backed up recently to an external USB hard drive. I repopulated iTunes via the backups. It still created duplicates which I am painstakingly and manually deleting.
HOWEVER, while the restore did restore my playlists, they are not all populated. The SmartPlaylists were re-created and repopulated. My personal playlists were re-created but were not populated.
I have not synced my iPod since before all this occured. Is there a way to reverse sync iTunes from the iPod to restore my settings and populated lists that are still on my iPod?
Thanks for any advice, insight, or suggestions offered!

  • HOw do I reverse sync iphone's calendar with ical on my mac?

I think I must have selected Mac to iPhone when syncing the first time and now it's set in perpetuity - I can't even merge my calendars, can only enter it all on my Mac's iCal for transfer to my iPhone calendar. If I enter data on my iPhone, then sync, it gets dumped.
So - how can I reset iTunes to make my device primary and Mac secondary? Or how can I reverse sync?

I found two solutions to this problem on a similar discussion topic.

I also experienced the same problem, i.e. iCal not syncing with iPhone. Contrary to most other users who experienced this problem, for me it appeared after updating the MacOS to 10.6.4, long before I updated the iPhone to OS4.
Now, thanks to janice0927 suggestion, it perfectly works, but I had to do one more thing in order to solve the problem:
Reset the sync history on your Mac. This is done in the iSync (located in the Application folder) preferences. After selecting "reset sync history", restart your Mac.
Afterward, follow the same procedure janice0927 suggested. For your convenience, I copied the steps here below:
    1. You are going to be pushing your calendar from ical onto your iphone so you will lose any events that are currently on your iphone but not on ical -- you will need to update ical manually to ensure you don't lose anything important.
    2. Scroll down in the info tab in itunes to the Advanced options at the bottom -- where it says replace the information on my iphone and select calendar.
    3. Sync, check that your iphone calendar matches your ical calendar
    4. Add a new test event to the iphone (the selection you made in advanced should have automatically deselected after you sync'd but check just to make sure)
    5. Sync again -- check if your test event was transferred.
    Good Luck!
    iMac (intel - 2007) Mac OS X (10.6.4) iPhone 3G (OS4)
Hope these work for any of you having the sync problem.

  • Apple TV reverse sync photos

My portable hard drive has cratered and I'm not sure if I can have the data recovered or not. However, alot of my photos on the drive were synced to my Apple TV and are still there. Is there any possibility of reverse syncing those photos back to my computer? My hard drive is a WD Passport, btw, and it is not initialized in the Disk Management. Maybe someone knows a fix to that as well which would resolve my problem as well. Many photos on the hd are my son's photos that I backed up for him before he left for Iraq. Those photos are NOT on my Apple TV so data recovery is the ideal solution. Thanx

No easy way to get content off AppleTV I'm afraid.
    Your only options are to:
    - dismantle and remove internal drive, and try and read the drive inserted in a caddy (but you'd need a Mac for that due to the file system)
    - hack AppleTV to gain command line access (you might need some utilities to do this on Windows)
    Neither are ideal options.
Depending on how valuable the photos are your best option may be a professional data recovery solution but there would be no guarantees.
Best case would be if it's not the passport drive but the control electronics/interface that's gone. Might also be worth checking that your USB cable and port on PC are ok.
If you do gain access to the drive and you think it's partially corrupted do not delete/write to it.
Might also be worth checking if WD have any diagnostic apps online for you to try and determine what's wrong.
You haven't added any new drives/optical drives recently, which in some configurastions could take that externald drive letter and hide it ?

  • Reverse syncing iphone playlists

I was running windows with 2 harddrives. One with my OS and some applications including itunes. My second harddrive was for storage which is where I kept my itunes music folder.
My OS harddrive crashed and I lost the itunes settings including all of the playlists. However, I was still able to keep my music because it was on my second harddrive.
My question is if there is a way to copy the playlists from my iphone to my itunes. Right now I just have itunes with a bunch of music and no playlists. I want to be able to reverse sync my iphone playlists to appear on itunes.
One issue I am running into is if I allow itunes to sync music it will delete the current playlists I have on the phone which I do not want to do obviously.

    George Coghill wrote:
I have discovered that the issue with unchecked playlists syncing on the iPhone is caused by the weird fact that iPhone sync will add any/all playlist the items you have synced appear in.
I realize this is an old post, but in case you haven't solved this there is a workaround -- for all music-only smart playlists, add the criteria "Kind Does Not Contain Video" (use the "Kind" criteria, not "Video Kind"). You can still have smart playlists for your videos, and obviously you would leave that criteria out. Only the music smart playlists need this, and it seems to affect all iPods going back several iTunes revisions.

  • Reverse syncing my Itunes

My hard drive crashed and it had to be rebuilt. I re-installed iTunes but my music library is gone.
The only option I have is to erase and sync because it thinks the iPod is managered by another computer and it wants to start over.
How do I reverse sync my iPod to my iTunes?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Reverse syncing select albums

I already know the two ways to reverse sync my music, but I want to know if there is a way to reverse sync only certain albums and or songs from the iPod to the computer.

I don't know what "two" ways you refer to, but any of the many programs that revers sync will allow you to select certain songs/albums/playlists etc.
Yamipod is just one such program.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Just use your backup to put everything back.  This is one of the many reason that backup are very basic.
