Reverse Telnet DialOut/EZ

I am connecting some users at out site to an NM-32AM (four octal cables).  I have not done this in MANY years but it looks very straightforward.  I first need to install the driver (in Windows) for the modem.  The links on this page
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/univgate/ps501/products_configuration_example09186a00800a1992.shtml
reference mdcsmica.inf and mnpv90.inf which are both dead links.  Does anyone know where I can find these *.inf files?

all the phisical setup is correcct ..I am connected to ASYNC 1-8.....

  • Reverse telnet to a specific line, based on AAA credentials

I want to setup a console server like a 2600 or something with a 16 or 32 port async module and allow users to access only certain ports/lines by reverse telnet based on login credentials.
For example, user joe can reverse telnet to ports 1 and 2, while user jane can reverse telnet to ports 3 and 4. User Jon can reverse telnet to ports 1 through to 6.
Is there a way to make this work? A document somewhere that outlines what's involved?
    Thanks in advance.

2600 Series is a Multiservice Platform so you can't convert like access server but you can enable the role based access.

  • ASA5520 reverse telnet problem

    Hi all,
I have a problem with ASA5520 and reverse telnet. I recently upgrade IOS on ASA5520, asa921-k8. Problem is that cisco has latest IOS version asa91x.... for this platform.
I have 7201 on remote site, and connect his aux to asa console. When I do telnet to specific port, this is output:

This is run over and over. I just can't enter a ROMMON mode of ASA. I have older IOS on flash which works.
I don't know what to type to enter in rommon mode. I tried every combinatios of characters but nothing. I used Putty, SecureCRT.
    Any idea?

So ESC isn't working during boot? FYI 9.2 is not supported on non-X ASA chassis (which I'm sure you have now figured out). You can also try changing the escape sequence so ESC will work. Check this link on how to change that.

  • Why the name Reverse Telnet ?

Forgive me for this simple ( and to some, stupid) question. Why is reaching the console ports of devices attached to a terminal server called Reverse Telnet. I am confused about the "Reverse" part.
    1. You reach "terminal server" by some suiteable means (telnet, ssh, console) from a device say your computer.
        c:\> telnet 10.10.10.1
        termsrv >
    2. You effectivily telnet to localhost (terminal server) on a specific port bound to certain TTY connection
        termsrv > R1                                  ! ip host R1 2001 <<loopback_address_termsrv>>
        R1>
Whats different for this second telnet is, instead of the telnet server (running on terminal server) presenting you with a second command shell it connects the mapped console port to the new telnet session. Effectively you read from or write to console port of R1.
R1 is oblivious about this whole operation. What's so "Reverse" about this second telnet session ?
    Thanks.

Ah, this is a good question.  Step into my time machine, and travel with me back to late eighties.  The 3Com 3C501 PC Ethernet card was released at the bargain basement price of $999 USD and the mighty Interl 386-DX33 was released to great fanfare.  Windows ran on top of DOS and all PC IP networking stacks were 3rd-party bolt-ons.  When you communicated with a computer, whether DEC, IBM or whomever you did it with a DUMB TERMINAL.  A terminal, for thos eof you who have never sern one,  was either a keyboard and a printer combo (like a Decwriter 100)  or a CRT text screen (Like a VT220, 80 columns by 24 lines) and a keyboard.  What you typed went out the serial port to a computer, and the computer sent text and screen drawing back commands through that same serial port.  That was the common human-computer interface of that era.
In the bad old days, the terminals were connected directly to the computers by serial interface cards and RS-232 cable.  As computers got faster, more and more terminals could be supported.  This started to get ridiculous as many serial lines emerged from these computers.  The bigger computers  looked like a mutant octopus.
Enter the TERMINAL SERVER, one of Cisco's early products. (The ASM)
The Cisco ASM terminal server took up to 96 terminals in an area and provided serial port connections for them.  It then multiplexed those terminals over Ethernet in order to reach an Ethernet connected computer (host).  The host computers were now freed from the sea of serial cables and could service dozens to hundreds of terminals thorough a single Ethernet port!   As a result, dozens to hundreds of slow, lightly used 9600 bps serial cables were replaced by a single 10 Mbit/sec connection.
The Cisco ASM software provided a telnet client to each serial port so that each terminal could connect to any telnet server (host) on the any network.  This allowed users to connect to multiple computers and relieved the load of computers providing telnet client services to directly attached terminals.  In this model, connections were initiated from a terminal on the port of the Cisco ASM to some distant computer.
Over time, Cisco noticed that there were computers and other devices (like the IBM 7171) that could not support Ethernet conenctions, but had dozens upon dozens of physical serial ports.  To make it so that network based telnet clients all over the Internet could access such an Ethernet-free computer, Cisco implemented a telnet SERVER function in the ASM.  Connections from a distant telnet client could now conenct through the ASM telnet server and reach these serial ports which had previously been limited to local terminals or expensive modem connections.  Since this activity was the exact reverse of the original use of the ASM, the function became known as "Reverse telnet."
In summary:  When a serially attached device CONSUMES service FROM the network, that is TELNET.  (The original design!)
When a serially attached device PROVIDES services TO the network, that is REVERSE TELNET. (The opposite of the original design.  But useful!)
Now, I will wait for people who have been in the industry longer than I have to go on about SNA, 3270s, paper tape and punch cards.

  • Suspend reverse telnet in Terminal

    Hi All,
I'm unable to suspend a reverse telnet session (e.g. from an access server to a router) with Terminal.
    The character sequence is: < ctrl-shift-6> < x >
This works perfectly from the Win XP command line but not from OSX (10.5.4) Terminal. When pressing "CTRL-SHIFT-6" I hear a beep an the key combination is not accepted. Tried will all the terminal types, as ANSI rather than VT-100, with no luck?
    Anybody can help?
    Thanks a lot,

  • Setting up reverse telnet for 1900 witch access

Hey all - I set up a lab to mess around with at home. The switch is an ancient dinosaur, but still it gives me something to mess with.
Does the 1900 xswitch support a reverse telnet port? Anything I need to be aware of in configuring the line? I can telnet to the management port on the switch. I can attach a console cable and connect to the console port. I tried setting up a 2509 router with an Octal cable for access. It works for reverse telnet to my other Cisco routers, but I get "% Connection refused by remote host" when I try reverse telnet to the switch.
    Help!

Thanks for the info. I verified the line:
    Swi1900-A#sh line
    RS-232 configuration:
9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bits, None parity
    Autobaud: Enabled
    Modem dialin: Enabled
    Idle time-out: 0
    Modem Init String:
    Silent time: 0
    Password Threshold: 3
I know on the routers I needed to configure login. I don't see that option when configuring console on the 1900.
    1900 line options:
    Swi1900-A(config)#line cons
    Swi1900-A(config-line)#?
    Line configuration commands:

silent-time Configure the silent time on login intrusion
speed Set transmit and receive speeds

The switch is running pretty ancient IOS. Do you know off-hand if I would need to configure login on the console port, and if that option is available on more recent IOS? I'm running:

  • Restrict modem dialout with ACS

    Hi ..
Using ACS I'm trying to limit reverse telnet access to a modem which will later be used by TTYredirector. I want the users to only have access to the modem. We are on 3.01 ACS (yeah I know old) ..
When I use the Network Access restrictions with device:2065:* (2065 being the line assigned port) i get service denied service=raccess tty65 in the Failed Attempts Log.
Do I need to add this service to the TACACS+ under Interface Config ? .. whats the params ? I tried just putting raccess in the new services which added a section under user/group depending on which i selected but nothing else.
on the router i have :
aaa authorization reverse-access default group tacacs+
Advice welcome, google has drawn a zero so far.
    Paul

    Paul
Its not the NAR causing the problem - this would result in a "user filtered" message in the failed attempts.
Looks like the problem is that your group config doesnt authorise the raccess service.
Because this isnt a standard pre-defined service in ACS you'll need to goto sys config then tacacs+ (in ACS) and define a custom tacacs service. Call it "raccess". In the group setup you'll then be to enable it and set any attributes you may need.

  • Reverse SSH ona terminal server

We are rolling out new terminal servers (2811s) and on the new terminal servers we want to configure reverse SSH.
On the old terminal servers we only had reverse telnet configured. And we would map the port to an IP using the ip alias command Eg ip alias 10.1.1.1 2067.
These would help out with management as we could then add this IP address to our DNS server and we wouldn't have to remember what port was needed when using out-of-band management when trying to console to a device.
With reverse SSH this isnt possible as the port needs to be specified when logging on to the router.
Has anyone successfully used reverse ssh with "ip alias"?
I could use the IP host command (ip host name port-num ip), but this would mean i would have to use a cisco device as a golden source.

    I like to use:
    alias exec 1 1.1.1.1 2001
    alias exec 2 1.1.1.1 2002
    alias exec 3 1.1.1.1 2003
    alias exec 4 1.1.1.1 2004
    alias exec 5 1.1.1.1 2005
    alias exec 6 1.1.1.1 2006
    alias exec 7 1.1.1.1 2007
    alias exec 8 1.1.1.1 2008

  • 866VAE-K9 Modem/AUX and rev. telnet Problem

    Hi Everyone,
I am currently observing some strange behavior of 866VAE-K9 router which might be a bug or my mistake, so I would very much appreciate your suggestions...
The 866VAE-K9 router has a single physical AUX/CON port.
The documentation states that in order to use AUX with a modem
    one has to:
    line con 0
     modem enable
If I do this, some process starts on the line 1 and prevents
using of chat scripts and reverse telnet:
     start-chat Dialout1 aux 0
% Chat script can not be run on line running other process
    telnet 192.168.10.1 2001
    Trying 192.168.10.1, 2001 ...
% Connection refused by remote host
If I clear line 1, and immediately after that start a chat script,
then it works (telnet hangs on at "asserting DTR"), but if I wait for
several seconds the line 1 becomes busy again...
    Your suggestions/ideas are very appreciated!

  • Setting up back-to-back async connection between 2 routers

    Hi,
I am trying to setup a back-to-back async connection between 2 routers via the async serial interface. The connection between the two routers are via a smart serial to RS232 male(CAB-SS-232MT) cable connecting to another RS232 female to smart serial (CAB-SS-232FC) cable. What I am trying to do is to push the async data from one router (Router A) to another router (Router B).
When I try to capture the async data from the async serial interface on the source router (Router A) while disconnecting the back-to-back connection from Router B, it is showing the correct data. The data capture is via the smart serial to RS232 male cable connecting to Router A, to a PC via hyperterminal. But however, when the back-to-back connection is connected and I try to do a reverse telnet at Router B opening up the port for the async interface on Router B, it seems to be showing incorrect data. I have confirmed that the speed and configurations on both routers are matched.
Does it require to have two physical async modems in between both routers for signalling? Any experts who are familiar with such setups can advise on why the async data at Router B appear as incorrect with unreadable characters? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hey Sebastian,
Had the same issue, which I just managed to get it resolved.
When you insert the modem, the router will create an Async interface for it lets say Async 0/1/0
then all what you've to do is:
chat-script DialOut ABORT ERROR ABORT BUSY "" "AT" OK "ATDT \T" TIMEOUT 45 CONNECT \c
    line 0/1/0
    exec-timeout 0 0
    script dialer DialOut
    modem InOut
    transport preferred none
    transport input all
    transport output all
    stopbits 1
    speed 115200
    flowcontrol hardware
and to dial a the remote router all what's required is:
reverse telnet to the above line (show line to know the line number) then type atdt
Let me know in case you still get issues

  • Disable load balancing on dual PRIs - 3640 with MICA modems for dial out

We have a custom application that connects through reverse telnet to a Cisco 3640 that has 2 NM-24DM modules and 2 PRIs connected to it. Currently all outgoing calls are getting load balanced over the two PRIs. I need to change that so that all calls go over the first PRI and when all channels are used up, it starts using the second PRI. Seems like a simple enough thing to do but I can't figure out how to.

If I understand the question I think that isdn  bchan-number-order is the command you are interested in.  I think it detaults to round-robin, sounds like you want ascending (that is isdn  bchan-number-order ascending).  It is an interface subcommand.
    See  http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_3t/12_3t2/feature/guide/gt_ibcac.html#wp1055853
That may only apply to native ISDN calls and not MICA based calls, but see if that helps.

  • Is It possible connect two router**from console port to console port

    Hi,
I need this for doing reverse telnet.
    Thanks very much

    No
you can connect router 1's aux port to router 2's console port.
    line aux 0
    password blablabla
    login
    modem InOut
    transport input all
find the aux port's line number which depends on the router model then telnet to a live ip on router 1 on that port.
    Worc_3640#sh line
Tty Typ Tx/Rx A Modem Roty AccO AccI Uses Noise Overruns Int
    0 CTY - - - - - 0 0 0/0 -
    129 AUX 9600/9600 - inout - - - 0 0 0/0 -
    * 130 VTY - - - - - 75 0 0/0 -
so say 10.1.1.100 2129 if 10.1.1.100 is on that box.
    should get you going..

  • Syslog messages in AAA

I have an issue with a switch's syslog messages showing up in the failed authentication attempts report in the AAA.
If anyone has any thoughts, let me know!!
    CHRIS

Do you perhaps have this switch console connected on a terminal server, and if so, does the terminal server have "no exec" configured on the lines used for reverse telnet?
I have seen symptoms similar to what you describe in a situation where I had a switch whose console port was connected to a terminal server and the terminal server lines did not have no exec. It looks like there was some activity on the switch which the terminal server presented a login prompt. The next text displayed on the switch was interpreted by the terminal server as the login id and was logged in the failed attempts log.
