Reversed or swapped frame glitch in clips logged and transferred from GH2

Hi
When I log and transfer 24p AVCHD footage from my panasonic GH2 in FCE I'm getting occasional swapped, backwards or reversed frames - it appears as a movement glitch in the final video file. What is happening is that every few minutes, I see this pattern: two frames will be swapped (they are in reverse order) then one frame where it should be, then another two that are swapped (or in reverse order).
I can't figure out a pattern as to when it happens, but it happens in the same place every time i transcode, even if i set different in/out points. Shows up when the resulting AIC files are played in quicktime player also.
However this glitch does NOT show up when i play the original AVCHD file from the camera in the log and transfer window or in VLC - so its not the camera's fault - it's FCE's transcoder.
You can fix it by just re-arranging the frames when editing, but its really annoying to try to find them all when you're editing a long project like a concert.
Anyone else have this problem?
Or can anyone recommend a good and inexpensive 3rd party app to transcode my footage assuming I can't fix this in FCE?
Thanks!

Actually it does support 24fps media, it just doesn't let you edit on a 24fps timeline, which makes working with 24fps media annoying - you end up with duplicated frames and therefore somewhat jerky motion.
But, what actually is coming out of the camera is this particular case is a 29.97fps video "labeled" as 24fps @ 80% speed - (I dunno - ask panasonic why they did that…). When you edit the headers of the resulting quicktime movie, you can get a 29.97fps 1080p video that works great in FCE's 1080p30 timeline (albeit without sound because the GH2 does not record it in this mode).
I could see that maybe FCE has a problem logging and capturing 24p footage since it does not support 24p timelines, but more likely seems to me like maybe an incompatibility with the AVCHD format in which the GH2 is shooting.
I'm trying out clipwrap, but unfortunately the demo wont go far enough into my clip to test if it fixes this glitch! (1 min time limit) Neither will the VoltaicHD demo.

  • Logged and Transfered AVCHD footage has dropped frames or appears jerky.

Hey I just got off the phone after 2 hours with Apple care which offered no answers to this issue. My co worker is able to log and transfer without problem on his computer from my "Sony HDR CX12" AVCHD Full 1080. But both of my machines no go. I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!! Dropped frames for sure on logged and transfered AVCHD footage.
I called back Apple Care and they are attempted to recreate the same system set up as I had to verify that iLife 2009 is screwing up FCP 6.0.6
I've found some other work arounds if you are having this problem. Please let me know since my case is still open with Apple Care and I would like to be able to mention that others are having issue with this.

This is one weird post. I don't understand what you are babbling about.
I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!!
COMPLETELY wrong. That couldn't be more wrong. Quicktime is the basic engine of FCP...it captures all footage as QT files. Without QT FCP would not function. And of course it works with iMovie and iPhoto installed...those are basic Apple applications. I have those on all my machines that have FCP and have had zero issues. Well, the issues you have are NOT related to having those applications installed. That is silly talk.
Now...when you import AVCHD footage, you have the choice on what CODEC you can use when you import. Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) or ProRes. AIC is nice and light, and can be played back on a firewire drive, but lack essential things like TIMECODE...and the quality isn't all that great. ProRes on the other hand is great quality and has timecode, but has a high data rate. A firewire 400 drive will not work...firewire 800 might, but raided firewire 800 like a G-Raid would be advisable. eSATA drives or internal SATA drives all the better.
iLife 09 is not screwing up FCP 6.0.6. I have iLife 09 and FCP 6.0.6 and have zero issues. most people do.

  • Log and Transfer from network volume causes FCE to crash

I have copied the contents of an SD taken from a Canon HF100 to a volume mounted on my network. Originally, this was only intended as a means of back-up but I found I needed to capture additional footage so I navigated to the volume in the Log and Transfer window and began ingesting clips. The first clip worked just fine but the Log and Transfer window hung about 1/3 of the way into the second. I can preview all the clips in the L&T window but the program crashes when I ingest. The clips vary in length but that does not seem to be a factor in the problem. I tried this on both a Tiger machine and a Snow Leopard machine with the same results. iMovie was able to ingest the footage over the network without the same problem. Ultimately I moved the footage back to a local drive and transferred from there without any issues at all. This issue involves a great many layers but if anyone has had a similar issue I would be interested to hear.

We just had a longish discussion about networks and capture/editing.
    Bottom line:
The slowest component in the network stream is the speed the network runs and not necessarily both ways. Check the specs of your specific gear.
I suspect this to be your problem. Here's a short extract.
    Networking Limitations:
    * When accessing the WD My Book World hard drives remotely using MioNet/WD Anywhere Access, please be aware that the transfer rate will be limited by whatever the slowest connection is. For instance, upstream rates for home users is typically no more than 512Kbps, even if the downstream rate is 4Gbps.
    * If there is heavy I/O load put on the network and WD My Book World hard drive, it is recommended that a static IP address be used rather than DHCP.
Another thing of note was to use CAT 6 cable.

  • I'm trying to log and transfer from a pro res file (HQ) final cut s7 is telling me it is an unsupported format. What the?

i have a 58 min pro res hq file that is a .mov. it is in a folder on my hdd. i'm trying to syn rushes by logging and transferring clips from this file but i cannot bring the said file into log and transfer. final cut putsup a window that tells me the file is in an unsupported format. and to bring in a file with a supported pathway. this i do not understand. any simple explanation as to what i'm missing?

Thanks meg. I'm trying not to have to sync all the rushes in a timeline. All rushes are in the one 58 min prores file. I wanted to, I guess, log and capture the rushes as clips that I logg in the log and transfer winnow and that it would then log and sort out the material as proxy files. I'm guessing I'm just being lazy or it can't be done. Thanks for the reply but I was looking for a differentbway round than a straight import of the whole file.

  • Must I "Log and Transfer" from Canon HG 10?

I have a Canon HG 10 (which is an HDD camcorder) and I'm using a 2.2 ghz macbook pro with OS 10.5.6. I can open the camera's disk image on my desktop and copy the "AVCHD" folder to my hard disk, and everything seems to be there. Question: can I simply navigate to the video clip folder and import the clips into FCE, or would it be more complicated?
In the past, if I copy the "AVCHD" folder to my hard disk, and then make a disk image out of it, imovie has treated the disk image like a camcorder (I haven't tried this yet with FCE), but I'd rather not have to make the AVCHD folder into a disk image-- doesn't seem like this should be necessary. Thanks

I want to keep a duplicate of the camera's information, before it is imported into FCE. I can log and transfer from the camera, but I'd like to keep an exact duplicate of the video camera's disk information on another hard disk even after it has been deleted from the camera. Also, it seems to not take nearly as long to open the camera's disk image and copy the files than it takes to log and transfer into FCE, from the camera, so apparently I don't have to keep the camera connected to the computer as long as long as I can retrieve the files from the copy later.

  • FCP 7 drops connection to P2 cardreader while log and transfere operation

If I insert all 5 P2 cards into my cardreader and starts log and transfere on clips longer than 1 minute. FCP cuts the connection to the firewire port and says: Card not properly ejected, and loging is closed down. Even crashes FCP sometimes.....
If I only insert 1 P2 card at a time there is no problem... NOT great when you have spanned clips...
    What to do APPLE?

In the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

    Any suggestion welcome

I haven't run into this problem with this format. Do you mean that typically a third of tthe Log &Transfers fail or that a third of the clips in an L&T typically fail to import?

  • Log and Transfer from Canon HFs100

I have connected my Canon HFS100 via usb cable to my mac and am able to use log and transfer to import/convert most of the clips. The problem I have is that it will not convert about 10% of the clips for some reason.
I am able to view and play the clips that are not able to be converted in the player in the log and transfer window, but when I add them to the queued section to convert them it tries to convert them and then fails. I get the Red Stop sign with exclamation point.
All video was shot one after another and nothing different was done.

    Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
Note: For FCP 7 the file will be called "Final Cut Pro 7.0 Prefs", obviously.

  • Log and Transfer from Canon Legria HF M36

    Hello everyone,
    I write from Italy.
I have a big problem. I can not successfully import video clips from my camcorder Canon Legria HF M36 into Final Cut Pro using Log and Transfer with any setting. If I get same clips in iMovie 09 I get clips into Apple Intermediate code, good. If I use the same clips in Final Cut Pro 7.0 video looks rough. I do not know what to do. Who can help me?
    Thank you very much
    Giovanni Losacco

That camera is confusing me when I look it up on BandH. Is it HD or SD?
It sends to SD card, yes? What format are you bringing it in as? I'd try Apple ProRes LT to start. See if that works.

  • Audio out of sync after Log and Transferring

So, I'm working on a project for school and I shot everything on a Panasonic HVX200 at 720p/24fps. I have everything saved onto a LaCie external and is connected via USB 2.0. When I go into Log and Transfer, all the clips look great and playback without a problem. But, after I "Add Clip To Queue" and try to play it back on the timeline or canvas, the audio is out of sync (it's almost twice as fast) and the video almost looks inferior.
Any advice would be great. I really want to start working on this project, since it's due Thursday afternoon.
    Thanks and regards,

  • Log and Transfer from HDD question

Hi, I am trying to capture footage from my friend's HDD camcorder (JVC GZ-MG30U) which is connected to my MacBook Pro via USB cable. When I select Log and Transfer I do not see any clips displayed in the window. iMovie seems to have no trouble displaying the footage. Thanks

    Thanks Tom.
Any harm in doing it pretty frequently? Not that i'd definitely need to. But i'm wondering if i'd have issues with permissions or anything else from "installing" and "uninstalling" it a bunch of times.
As a side note. The HD video quality is fantastic now tht i'm actually able to use the video from the camcorder. However, these renders and transfers take quite a while! I wonder how much more efficient a MBP would be. Hmmm.
Thanks again for the help. I definitely would have never guessed that!

  • My Sony AVCHD cam is no longer recognized when "logging and transferring"

I'll try to keep this short and sweet.
I have some footage on a Sony HD cam.  When I connect it to the mac, the drive appears just fine.  When I go to "log and transfer" it no longer begins loading itself.  When I try to manually select the disk and open it, I get this - "(this drive)... contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."
When I try this with my other identical Sony HD cam, it works just fine, like it always has.
When I try to "repair image," it finds no problems.
The only difference between the two, is that the non-working one was plugged into a Windows machine to manually upload a couple MTS files to youtube.  No formatting was done.
How can I get my FCE to recognize my camera again?
    Thanks!

    I FIGURED IT OUT!
I had manually deleted some videos via Finder but remnants of the files were still on the camera itself.  So, by looking in the STREAM folder, I could find where there were gaps, locate those files on the camera and then delete them.  Once these "ghost" files were gone, my camera popped up in the Log and Transfer window immediately.
    Hallelujah.

  • Logging and capturing from a hard drive camera

I recently bought a jvc hard drive camera. It saves the video to 2 files a .mod file and a .moi file and when I try to use these in FCP it does not recognize these file types. Any help would be appreciated.

Has your camera a firewire port? To use Log and Capture you must use such port. What model is it?

  • Log and Capturing from USB device?

I have a VHS connected to my G5 using an InterView RCA to USB device. Is it possible to log and capture into FCP5? I seem to be getting the sound okay, but can't get the video.

You can't capture to FCP without timecode.<<</div>
Not true. You can easily capture non-timecoded footage from any number of sources, including VHS. Set FCP's device control to "Non-Controlable Device" and use "Capture Now." The source player will need to be connected to your DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter).
    VHS decks don't generate timecode<<</div>
Also not true. Most pro VHS and S-VHS VTRs have both VITC and LTC capability.
