Reversed type looks "bold" on new iMac

I just bought a new iMac (specs below) and immediately noticed that reversed type (white type on dark background) in Safari and Firefox definitely looks "bold" for a lack of a better word. This is in comparison to the 3 CRT monitors around our home/office.
This is my first LCD so I can't compare it to another but I can't say that I've noticed this weirdness on any LCD I've ever seen including my wife's Powerbook.
It could be related to the way these browsers render reversed fonts because reversed fonts embeded in images (photoshop, jpgs, etc) look as you would expect. I suppose it could also be related to recent iMac graphic card issues?
Anyone else notice this bold reversed type effect on the new iMac? or any other LCD for that matter.
Thanks.

I don't think it has anything to do with the LCD, but I've definitely seen similar weird effects that seem to be related to "font smoothing." Try fiddling with the settings at the bottom of System Preferences > Appearance. Also, the (freeware) TinkerTool.app from www.bresink.com provides a wider range of control on minimum smoothed font size. (IMO, all of Bresink's products are A++ quality software.)
Fonts drive me nuts, but I understand that Leopard may change things -- hopefully, for the better.

  • How can a video editor use an NTSC studio monitor on the new iMac without a Firewire 400 port?

Looking at the new iMacs (hungrily) and wondering how I will be able to continue using my Sony DSR-11 and NTSC monitor in the absence of any Firewire 400 port.  I suppose there may be cables that will allow me to use the Firewire 800 port and am thinking they may be difficult to locate.

No they're not - they're available from many sources; i.e. I bought a FW 400 > 800 cable when I bought my iMac last August (at an authorized local reseller). Just google Firewire 400 > 800 and you'll get plenty of results. You can also opt for an adapter if you prefer. Both are also available at the Apple store online.

  • Does the new iMac still have these?!?!

    Heyy,
I was wondering, and I'm quite curious. When I look at the new iMac design I see things that it might not have that the last generation had.
    1) Does it still have a sleep light, if it does, where is it?
    2) Does it still have the magnetic side where the Apple Remote sits?
    Thanks,
    Ramin

    Heyy,
Thanks for the fast reply. I'm extremely surprised that Apple would do this. I still prefer my iMac (white one), and this pushes me even further away. Even though it's newer, I don't think it's better (except for processors and hard drive), but they can me upgraded(with a lot of hard work!)
Again, thank you for the information.

  • New iMacs slow to open programs compared to previous model?

    Hi all,
I have noticed something while looking at the new iMacs on display in store:
While a previous-model (just superseded) 24" 3.0g ghz dual-core opens iMovie in 4 seconds, the new models repeatedly take 40 seconds or more to do the very same thing. On different machines...in different stores...same thing happens.
When questioned why, the assistant looked at me uncomfortably and said "Yes, I have learned Apple has supplied us with demo machines installed with the incorrect display drivers..." Huh? Demo machines? Wrong display drivers?
I think he was trying to have a lend of me...surely (a) Apple doesn't supply demo machines to the outlets and, (b) they wouldn't install graphics drivers separately to the rest of the system software.
Anyway...has anyone else noticed the slow performance of the new iMacs when opening programs?
    Cheers.

myhighway, what's your point in relation to my original observation?
What I was saying was that it was interesting that the new models were - in my experience - quite a bit slower than the older model. I had experienced this in two different stores. Had anyone noticed/experienced this and what could be the reason? I just thought the sales guys explanation was a bit flaky at best. I was making a simple observation...no biggy.
Whatever the reason for whatever Apple does (who cares?) it was interesting to note that the newer models appeared slower than the old.
Oh and by the way, I have been a very proud Mac owner since my first in 2003. Will never buy anything else but a Mac now, unless I really have to. So I am already - well and truly - a mac convert.

  • Loss of DVD drive and Infrared port on new iMacs

    Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone else has run into this issue.  I teach CPR classes and sometimes when a client doesn't have the proper audio-visual equipment, I will bring my 2009 iMac to play the course DVD on.  Thanks to the infrared remote, I can pause and play as needed without having to be right next to the computer. Well, as with all things, my older iMac is about ready to put out to pasture.  The issue I'm having is that when I looked at the newer iMacs in the store as a replacement, there's no DVD drive and no infrared port or remote!  Same price but less features!
What are my options here?  I thought about buying an external DVD superdrive but then I have no way of operating it from afar.  Also, the hardware (infrared port) for the Apple remote has been removed too.  Has anyone else run into this?  Aside, from purchasing a refurbished 2009 model iMac, how would I continue to be able to use my new iMac to play my course DVDs??

If you want to control your new iMac remotely and you own a mobile iDevice, there are remote apps you can use on both your iMac and iDevice.
These apps work over Wifi and/or Bluetooth.
Apple has its own remote app simply called Remote.
Another, which I use and is very comprehensive remote app, is called Rowmote Pro by a developer called Regular & Rhythm.
If you want complete and total remote control access to your Mac, look at Splashtop Remote.
There is also a dedicated WifI and/or Bluetooth remote for Macs and iDevices by a company called Satechi.
    Found here.
    http://www.amazon.com/Satechi-MediaRemote-Bluetooth-Multi-Media-Control/dp/B0082 4948U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391729056&sr=8-1&keywords=Satechi+remote
All of these options work with an external CD/DVD optical drive.
I use Rowmote Pro helper on my 2009 iMac and I use both my iPad and iPod Touch as the actual Rowmote Pro remotes to control my iMac.

  • What to buy? New imac or MacPro/Apogee? Does anyone know? Please help!

So I'm running Logic Pro & Pro Tools.
    I use a
    15' MacBook Pro
    Universal Audio LA-610 Mic Pre
    Yamaha MSP7 Speakers & Sub
    Digidesign 003 Factory on order.
I keep getting Core Audio "Disk too slow or System Overload".
    (Example-On a 23 audio track session).
I want add to my setup so I don't get so many latency issues and this problem on bigger sessions.
Where do I spend the money?
I was Looking at the new imacs? The 24" 2.8GHz or should I go a MacPro?
I wanted to buy a bigger screen too. So maybe I spend a little more money and get a whole new computer for my studio instead of using my MacBook Pro.
Or just buy a bigger screen and spend the money on memory?
Do I spend it on Apogee? If so what should I buy?
Can someone please give me some Pro advice?
    Thanks guys, really appreciate it.
    Troy

    Thanks guys.
    Well I have some external hard drives OWC/Lacie etc 400 & 800.
    I have that setup going.
I'm basically recording my solo album and also getting into more TV spots & Trailer/Film music.
    Using Stylus/Ivory/Philharmonic strings etc....
So I'm doing what they say and recording to external drives.
I guess the imac isn't a good option as I need to be able to update my system.
To start to get into more of a Pro Arena should I look at the Apogee Symphony mobile setup or the Ensemble?
    More memory?
What else is going to give me the power to make this music without getting inot latency & coreaudio problems?
    Really appreciate the help guys!

  • Will the new iMac run Motion 3?

I can't really afford to go to the Mac Pro. I am looking at the new iMac (24 inch, 2.8 processor model), and wondering if it will run Motion 3? I know it won't be ideal, but still I hope that it will suffice for a high-end amateur user.
I currently run Motion 2 on a Macbook, which is obviously not ideal, but at least somewhat works.

No, except by running it through Mac OS X Server 10.6 in emulation.

Just purchased a new iMac and after transferring all info from my old iMac.  Now when using iPhoto slideshow it  displays the pictures in reverse order.

There's a bug in iPhoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks that affects slideshows played directly from an album.  The slideshow will not play correctly if the photos have been sorted manually.  Any other type of sort, date, rating, keyword or title, will play correctly.
If you need that manual sort of pictures for your slideshow create the slideshow in iPhoto's slideshow mode.

    Yes, EEK!
Have you run Microsoft Update and installed the latest 14.2.4 Office update yet?
Humor me. When you perform copy, do you then establish keyboard focus by clicking the mouse pointer on the destination screen for the paste action -- before keying the paste?
Have you installed any third-party keystroke mapping software that may be getting between the operating system and these two applications?
Under System Preferences > Accessibility > Keyboard, have you enabled Sticky, Slow, or EEK! Keys?
In System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Keyboard & Text Input, doe the check marks look like the following:

  • My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time?

My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time - then I have to repeat this again! Any help appreciated.

I've been having the same issue, but have just discovered something on my own that hasn't been pointed out in any of the forums I've visited.  In what I thought would be a vain attempt to help myself, I went to System Preferences, Users & Groups, and then clicked on Login Items.  I discovered that one of the Items that was listed to open automatically upon login was iTunes Helper and that there was an exclamation point beside it indicating that it was incompatible.  I simply deleted that item and now I don't have the situation you described and my wireless is connected.  Hope this helps!

  • I have a new iMac and would like to buy a cheap version of Photoshop to create a simple flyer.  If I look on ebay or similar, what version do I require?

I have a new iMac and would like to buy a cheap legal version of Photoshop to create a simple flyer.  If I look on ebay or similar, what version do I require?
I understand that Photoshop 5 is not compatible?
I used to use CS5 at work which was very good, doing a little reserach it appears as if this suite has been replaced by a monthly 'cloud' charge which for me as a basic home user is unnecessary.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hello Simonlala;
Anyone that buys an iMac should not have to buy "cheap".  it's like putting "retread tires" on a brand new Farrari! Ugh!
To find a cheap version of PS is to locate an obsolete version only?  Software surplus business may have some or check the obituary columns to see if any Photographers or Gaphic Designers have left some things behind?
Some options...enroll in a community college Multimedia class and you will not only have access to Photoshop, you'll have access to much more software for the price of the course.  It will also qualify you as a student and you can get a discounted rate on the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription as well.
If you are only making "simple flyers" would not MS Word or OpenOffice software do the job for you?  There are applications for that purpose and Photoshop is not the only way to skin this cat!  Or you can always buy a box of Crayola's and make a pamphlet that way?
And as a bonus, you may learn something from the course you enroll in.
I am a student and subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud...it's reasonable for my purposes for now.

  • Has anyone had any luck returning there iMac w/ Lion? I couldn't even reconnect back to the iternet tonight w/o restarting my new iMac....  Looks like folks have been having this problem for months

Has anyone had any luck returning their iMac w/ Lion? I couldn't even reconnect back to the iternet tonight w/o restarting my new iMac....  Looks like folks have been having this problem for months & months .. The Apple tech told me that all I could do is wait for Apple to come up with a fix... Got a new router this week so that isnt' it.  Would I be better off w/o this until Apple gets their act together?  I downloaded the combo update 10.7.3 & it helped for about a day...  yesterday I still had to manually reset the connection but now it's resorting back to disconnectiong w/o fully going into sleep mode first.  Sorry to say this is a major lemon.  Help!

Seems unfair... I thought I was probalby having a router problem...  got a new router this week. Thst's when we realized we have a computer problem.  My next door nieghbor got zero sleep staying up all night while trying to help us figure out what the problem could be. He said if it were him he would have returned the iMac / Lion.  Got the new iMac w/ Lion for Christmas but didn't realize until this week that Apple is the problem....  Hard to believe that Apple just has kept on selling this like ... oh  No problem!  Can't stay on the internet... but will sell you another one today!  I'm getting mad...  It's not every day we spend that kind of money on a computer .  & ALL they can give us is that LOUSY Lion combo update.  I can't even stay connected long enough to make a vitamin order with Puritan's Pride...  & then the disconnection wipes out my cart... so I have to  start over. When are they going to fix this!   'Not feeling very positive'.  I feel like Apple KNOWINGLY sold my husband a defective... system.  14 days... oh please...

  • I am looking to buy a new iMac....help please.

I am looking to buy a new iMac, and I started a search on Craigslist for fun, and it seems as if some people have some really good deals on the model mb325ll/a. It is the 2.8 ghz version with 2 gigs of ram and a 320gb hard drive.
This is not a model sold in the Apple Retail store, so I am a little hesitant, but the guy said it is the business model. Is this true?
What kind of warranty would it come with if I am an individual user and not a business? Do I miss out on anything? Please give any advice you may have. Thanks.

There is no such thing as a "business" Mac, versus one for an individual consumers. You should look at this list, and find your model and complete specifications.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
Based on the information you provided, it sounds like this one
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.8-24-inch-alu minum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
which is last year's (early 2008) model, not the current model (early 2009).
If it is being sold as used, the standard warranty is in effect for one year after its original sale. If it is being sold as new, the standard warranty is for one year. You can check the warranty status using the iMac's serial number.
You can also compare the price to the same iMac model on Apple's +Special Deals+ (refurb) page. It happens to be available currently as a refurb, if this is the same model.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB325LL/A?mco=MjE0NDk5Mw
Apple certified refurbished Macs have the same warranty as new. From my experience, they look and operate like new.
