Reversing Black EPS in ID CS4

We place a ton of logos in our catalogs. 75% of those logos are solid black vector files. Every now and then, we want to reverse a logo against a solid color. Until today, we have been creating a white version of the logo we wanted to reverse, but today we tried something, and against all logic, it worked.
We placed an EPS logo and set it to lighten. The original logo is black, but on the InDesign page, it shows white. It even prints white, which blew my mind because the original is 0/0/0/100 (all K).
We tried it again on the opposite page with a different logo. Still an EPS, still 100% K, and now it doesn't print. Different logo, but I can't spot any differences. They're both built on the exact same swatch, but they're not working the same way.
It would be incredibly cool if we could build our vector logos to change color in InDesign. We're not going to use BMP files for logos, obviously. But even if we could just make black logos print white, that would be huge. Right now we just have multiple versions of each logo, and it would be incredibly convenient to just have one all-purpose logo.
So:
1) Why did 'lighten' work on a placed EPS file, turning black into white?
2) Why did a different EPS, using the same settings, show white on preview and not print at all (which is actually what I expected)?
3) Is there a way to build our logo files so that we can change the color after we place them?

And to say quite honestly, I can't believe that this method (.eps set to lighten) actually works, but it does!

  • Can placed black eps graphics be separated as spot color in ID?

    I have a 400 plus page catalog that has all kinds of product images in it. Most are bitmaps or tifs that already have a spot color assigned to them. However there are several placed eps graphics that have been created in Illustrator and are black. I would like to make these black eps graphics print with the other spot items. Is there a way to mark them in ID for this, or do I have to make a spot color version of each one an re-place them?

    If your graphics are all on separate layers from the text, you selectively toggle layers for print.
    Alternatively, you could create a new black swatch for your text and change all the text in a few clicks (if your using paragraph styles).

  • Saving EPS Files in CS4 without the artboard

    I am having an issue placing eps files using CS4.
    If you save an EPS file in Illustrator CS4, the resulting file retains the entire artboard... So when you place the file in Photoshop, the graphic is too small.  If I open this eps and simply resave it as a Illustrator CS3 EPS, it places correctly... Meaning the artboard in not included so the graphic is as large as the photoshop canvas.
    There has to be a reason for this change and some way to force CS4 to save the eps files like it does for CS3, but I can't find where... Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

    I save as dialog uncheck use art boards option and you get this in photoshop
    from this in illustrator

  • Can you easily reverse effect parameters in Premiere CS4?

    Suppose I have an elaborate effect, perhaps the ripple effect, then blur, then opacity fade out of text.  The effect starts with the text showing normally then when it starts, the ripples, blur, and opacity start until the text is gone.
    What would be nice, instead of having to reverse engineer these effects by doing them in the opposite direction, is there a way to save all of them as a preset but also apply them in reverse and then save THAT as a preset too?  Many years ago (12 to be exact) in my tape days and when using Pinnacle Alladin, you could build an effect and then click a check mark and it instantly reversed everything.
    Does Premiere CS4 have this?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your reply.  By "swapping the keyframes" I'm not really sure I understand what you mean.  Can you explain please?
    Thanks.

  • Can't open EPS from PhotoShop CS4 in PS CS6 (or much of anything else)

    I have some EPS files that I just can't open - I'm trying to get the creator to send them in another format but they're not responding to any of my emails so I need to try and get the data out of them.
    The start of the header looks like so:
      %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
      %%Creator: Adobe Photoshop Version 12.1x20110328 [20110328.r.145 2011/03/28:10:30:00 cutoff; r branch]
    So that looks to me like CS4? CS6 is v14 so I'm guessing it's CS4.
    They won't open in Photoshop, Illustrator, Inkscape or Irfanview.
    The specific message in all of these is either unknown error or parsing error.
    They will open in Acrobat Pro, but the resultant PDF is 100 times smaller than the original EPS (with no image compression etc.), around 1MB vs around 100MB, and all the raster graphics are flattened into a single layer, and the text is all outlines - I can't do any work with it.
    Any ideas at all? Or shall I just keep trying to get hold of the creator? Or is there more information that I can provide to help figure this out?

    OK - just to answer my own question. Aside from my difficulty opening them - the data I wanted was never there anyway. I now have the original PSD files and if you export them to an EPS from PS, the behavior I was seeing in Acrobat is correct - the raster layers do get flattened, and the text converted to outlines. So those files would never have been of use to me even if I could open them with something other than Acrobat.

  • Thin black line across Indesign CS4 doc exported to PDF

    Hi ... am using Indesign CS4 on OS Windows XP and exporting docs to PDF (Acrobat 9 Professional) then printing on a HP Colour LaserJet CP2025.
    I'm getting a thin black line across the bottom of the page when printing - it doesn't show up on the screen though.  The line sits 5mm above the bottom edge of the page and prints whether I have bleed set or not in Indesign.
    Have tried toggling scaling, printer's marks settings, printer settings,Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional settings with no joy.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi all,
    EUREKA!   Looks like it's finally fixed ...
    One of my printer (HP Colour Laser Jet CP2025) has an advanced printer property, under printer features, called "Print Data Optimization" - this was set to "Auto" - I changed it to "Optimise for Text and Vector" and voila!  Thin black line has disappeared and I'm happily reprinting a bunch of documents ...
    Thanks everyone for your advice and input - saved my sanity

  • Problem with eps transparency, Illustrator CS4

    Hi!
    I truly hope you can help me with this because I really can't find the answer myself.
    I need to save eps-versions of the files I make in the Illustrator.
    I have made a script (using Javascript) to get the right settings for eps automatically and it has worked fine, but now that I upgraded to CS4 there's suddenly a problem. Script used to work so that any excess transparency around the image was cropped off. Now it remains there and causes problems later in the processes where these eps-files are used.
    If I look at the eps-files in the Photoshop I can see that the size of the artboard remains there as transparency.
    Here are the settings for saving eps in the script:
    function getEPSOptions()
    var epsSaveOpts = new EPSSaveOptions();
    epsSaveOpts.cmykPostscript = true;
    epsSaveOpts.embedAllFonts = true;
    epsSaveOpts.includeDocumentThumbnails = false;
    epsSaveOpts.preview = EPSPreview.None;
      return epsSaveOpts;
    I noticed that I can crop the transparency off with this line:
    saveDoc.cropBox = saveDoc.visibleBounds
    But the problem here is that if the size of the illustration is larger than artboard this will actually make the size of the eps-file bigger.
    I need a solution where the tranparency is cropped off, but the artboard area is never made larger by the script...
    Any ideas? Anyone?

    Heh ... I happened to write a function for exactly this just the other day. Not sure how this goes exactly with visible vs geometric bounds. Depending on exactly what you need, it might be problematic.
    myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var docBounds = (function() {
    myDoc.LeftPoint = myDoc.pageItems[0].left;
    myDoc.RightPoint = myDoc.pageItems[0].left + myDoc.pageItems[0].width;
    myDoc.TopPoint = myDoc.pageItems[0].top;
    myDoc.BottomPoint = myDoc.pageItems[0].top - myDoc.pageItems[0].height;
    for (i=0;i<myDoc.pageItems.length-1;i++) {
    myDoc.LeftPoint = (myDoc.pageItems[i].left < myDoc.LeftPoint) ? myDoc.pageItems[i].left : myDoc.LeftPoint;
    myDoc.RightPoint = (myDoc.pageItems[i].left + myDoc.pageItems[i].width > myDoc.RightPoint) ? myDoc.pageItems[i].left + myDoc.pageItems[i].width : myDoc.RightPoint;
    myDoc.TopPoint = (myDoc.pageItems[i].top > myDoc.TopPoint) ? myDoc.pageItems[i].top : myDoc.TopPoint;
    myDoc.BottomPoint = (myDoc.pageItems[i].top - myDoc.pageItems[i].height < myDoc.BottomPoint) ? myDoc.pageItems[i].top - myDoc.pageItems[i].height : myDoc.BottomPoint;
    return [myDoc.LeftPoint,myDoc.TopPoint,myDoc.RightPoint,myDoc.BottomPoint]
    myDoc.artboards[0].artboardRect = docBounds;

  • Reverse a sound in Sb CS4?

    Hey all
    I did a quick internet search and I cant find an answer to how to revers and invert an audio file in Sb. The Wiki articial said that the feature was not available in CS3, but that it was going to be added in CS4 ... did  that boat get missed?

    I just use Premiere Pro for that - but if it's not possible in Soundbooth then that's a great failing for audio editing software.
    I'm sure it used to be possible in Audition - which I think is what it used to be called before they changed the name to Soundbooth - but I think (If my memory serves) that you could only reverse the entire file, not just part of the sound file.
    Which is what I'd like to be able to do.
    So if anyone can tell us how to do it in Soundbooth CS4 - great!

  • Can one embed the complete font (not a subset of it) when saving as an EPS in Illustrator (CS4)?

    We are running into some display font issues when our clients use Acrobat 7 or older versions of reader to view our PDF proofs.  On occasion, subsetted fonts conflict and reveal question marks instead of the desired type in the final PDF.
    We use a proprietary composition system to perform the majority of our file composition, but use Illustrator for tables and charts.  Our composition system requires imported elements to be saved in the EPS file format.  As far as I can tell, there is no way to have Illustrator embed the complete font rather than a subset of it when saving the file as an EPS.  Please correct me if I am wrong?
    All help is greatly appreciated.

    Russel,
    I appreciate your advice.
    To answer your befuddlement, the PDF supplied to our client is generated from a PostScript file created from our proprietary composition system.  Unfortunately, the casue of the subset conflict is occuring prior to the PDF distillation.  We do not create the PDF in Illustrator.  Our proprietary composition system can only import the EPS file format for linked bitmap and vector images.  The moment the EPS is saved is where the issue is occuring.  A redistill further downstream (when the EPS and composition files are already combined in the PostScript) does not appear to eliminate the conflict.
    If there was a way for us to embed the entire font and not just a subset of it in the EPS that we export out of Illustrator, then the likelihood of a subset conflict occuring in the PDF during distilling would be eliminated.  Fortunately, the question marks only show up when the PDF is displayed on screen in Acrobat.  The output from this same PDF looks fine when sent to a printer.  Considering the size of our print runs (often in the millions) and the importance of all type displaying properly (risk of large SEC fines), the explanation that the job will print correctly even though it displays improperly does not satisfy our clients.
    We can not convert the text to outlines since the fonts would appear slightly heavier in the tables than they would appear in the portion that is composed in our proprietary composition system where the same font is used.
    Any other ideas?

  • Odd frames when printing transparency PSD on black background on Illustrator CS4

    I don't know why but any PSD file that have transparency in it and placed on an illustrator document, printed with those frames around it (see example JPEG file that  I added). I tried to print directly to the printer and got those frames. I tried to create a postscript before and then PDF throe the distiller and still, the PDF print those frames. You can see the PDF that I added and examine it. You will see under the "output preview" that the parameters of the black background is the same around.
    What is that?!

    I can't use RGB profile if I want to be precise with my works.
    I found the problem and how to fix it.
    I think it is a problem with the RIP of the printer. The printer receive vector, raster and transparency object together and needs to flatten to a single image - it doesn't succeed.
    So, if I send to the printer from Illustrator, under "Advanced" I use customize pref. by tuning it to all raster and not vector at all the print printed good.
    It's so primitive and stupid that with a new printer I still need to do the RIP with the application.

  • Broadcast safe blacks and whites - Premiere CS4 - How to get?

    Hi. I recently had a fellow editor over and he saw some of my footage and mentioned that my whites were too bright and to make sure that they were broadcast safe before exporting them. He didn't know how to do it in Premiere as he uses Final Cut. He said that Final Cut does it automatically. Does Premiere Pro do it Automatically?
    After mentionng it to me, I did notice that my whites were quite bright. Below are some examples.
    These are two frames taken from the timeline of a sequnce which had already been exported as an AVI.
    Here is some information about the system I use:
    Once I found out how to do it, is there a way I could quickly apply this to a whole sequence of clips? Do i need to play around with it for each individual clip?

    yes, the tv and computer monitor will look different...probably why you thought the whites were OK when editing on computer.
    I use CS3 so your version may be slightly different ....
    im gonna put up some images to illustrate...
    you can use broadcast colors (effect )...drag onto clip ...and see if that works OK for you ...
    export a small sample of product ( shrink work area to do small sample ), burn dvd and look on TV...only way to see if its working...can use dvd RW if you want and your dvd player can play dvd rw.
    if broadcast colors doesnt work well for you, you can also use the OUTPUT on levels...which is normally 0 and 255...black and white...
    after you click "OK" on the levels menu you see in sample is when you see change in program monitor...( in my version cs3 )..you wont see change until you click OK, except for in the little tiny window of the levels box....
    I personally use the levels adjustment (output only ) more often than the broadcast safe colors for WHITES...

  • EPS files does not render correctly in CS4 & CS5, but looks fine in CS2

    Hello,
    I am experiencing rendering issues with EPS files under CS4 and CS5. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the EPS file, as the file will render correctly under CS2.
    The EPS is a map of Australia, and it's the hill shading that fails to render correctly:
    CS2 (rendes correctly):
    CS4 (hill shading corruption):
    CS5 (hill shading corruption):
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    -nav.

    Is it possible that you see the native AI data in CS2 because it has been embedded in the EPS? To me it very much looks this way, since the actual EPSdata never even has complete outlines in your other images. This is a strong indication that the paths were never properly segmented for EPS export to begin with...

  • Can't open EPS with CS6 - sent from someone using CS4

    Friend mailed me an .eps file from CS4 and I can't open it on CS6. What's wrong??
    "Can't open the illustration. Could not complete the requested operation."

    Can your friend open the copy from their sent folder in their email application? I ask because it is possible the file was corrupted in the send. If they can open it, how are you opening it? Did you copy the file from the email to your computer instead of trying to open it out of your email app?
    Take care, Mike

  • Photoshop EPS Won't Open/Distorted When Opened

    The two problems I'm having revolve around Photoshop EPSs and Illustrator CS4.
    I created a very high resolution file in Photoshop which included some vector shapes & text. My client wanted the files delivered in EPS format, so I exported them as Photoshop EPS.
    Problem 1: If I check "Include Vector Data" when saving as Photoshop EPS, I am unable to open the file in Illustrator. Illustrator shows a "Parsing EPS Format..." dialogue box with a progress bar, and after about 10 seconds and the progress bar gets about halfway, it gives an error: "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error." In addition, the EPS won't open in Photoshop, with the error: "Could not complete your request because photoshop was unable to parse the PostScript."
    Problem 2: I am able to open the EPS file in Illustrator if I do not check "Include Vector Data" when saving, however the vector objects appear distorted. This also happens in PDF form.
    I am certain the problems stem from the fact that the files are so large, because when I create a small test image in Photoshop and re-create the steps, I don't have any problems.
    So I'd like some suggestions on either how to fix the problem or advice on a better way to deliver the files to my client. I'm a Web Designer by trade, but my boss just dropped this graphic design project into my lap and doesn't seem to understand that the two fields are vastly different. I use the Adobe Web Suite so I don't have InDesign, and even if I did I don't know how to use it. How do graphic designers keep their file sizes small when they're making such high-resolution designs?

    I just wanted to thank Scott for the tip below, i had an eps file sent to me and encountered the problems outlined above (i am using CS3) followed Scotts advice and i am pleased to say it worked a treat. Well done internet and well done forum users!

    I removed line containing a similar line as above "FF logo BLACK.eps EPSFART5 ,ë ;¿§¿§ õw " from the file header using Notepad and the EPS file opens in CS3. Remove everything prior to %!PS-Adobe and it should open.

  • Problems with CS4

    I am developing flash games as a career.  I tried using CS4 for the past few months and I am going crazy with all the problems I encounter once I push flash to the limit.
    The List of Problems
    Filters
    1) Filters cannot be applied to movieclips bigger than a certain dimension.  Flash will have an error message in the output box. (this occurred with a shape w:3000 X h:2000)
    2) The stage/working area and the test movie sometimes will fail to display any filters appiled to movieclip objects.
    3) The removal of the "directional dial" in some of the filters make it extremely slow to visually edit the filer e.g. Created a sun on the stage and I want an object to cast a shadow.  Apply the drop shadow filter but hard to determine the angle which the drop shadow is cast by just changing numbers
    4) Changing values of the filters like "angle", "blur" ...e.t.c using the slider cause a severe lag - resources monitor shows a sudden jump in cpu usage
    3D
    5) 3D transformation to a shape less than 10 pixels on the width or height distort the shape (blurs the image like as if a blur filtered is applied.
    6) When applying a 3D plane to a racing game(back view), "forward" movement makes the camera goes into the plane instead of along the plane
    7) It is impossible to create a animation of a moving 3D box without actionscript.  The 4 faces facing the top, bottom, right and left will move correctly,  But the face facing you will never move correctly.
    8) All 3D objects will adhere to one point.  Impossible to create 3d objects with multiple vanishing points.  Extreme difficult to syncronize multiple 3d objects movement.
    Symbols
    9) With multple instances of the same symbol on stage, editing filters or colour in the symbol will not reflect changes in other instances on the stage unless the editing involves a change in position.  After editing the symbol, move the shape using the mouse and undoing after that will enable the changes to be reflected on stage,  That is a waste of effort.
    Bitmap fill
    10) When the colour effect of a movieclip with a bitmap filled shape inside is changed, the change will undo it self when you zoon in to 800%.  After zooming out again, the change in colour effect is still not visible until flash is closed and reopened.  The change in colour effects now is visible.
    11) Bitmap fill to lines constantly gives the "red colour" whereby the bitmap fill has failed during compiling.  However, the stage do not reflect this and the lines still contain the bitmap fill.
    Publishing
    12) What looks good on stage looks bad when published. A shape that looks good on stage looks different when published.  This is especially true for shapes with very small dimensions.
    Tween
    13) The new tween increases filesize of of the .swf more compared to classic tween.  That is bad when size is an issue for downloading and claching webpages.
    14) The new structure of flash applies a tween to the object instead of timeline.  When tweening multiple objects, the filesize increases drastically when they are more objects (e.g. 16Kb to 170Kb)  This will not happen in previous vesions of Flash.
    15) Memory leak.  Everything you close and open flash, memory leak occurs.
    Performance
    16) unstable.  Flash CS4 has crashed around 60 times since I began using it.  Most crash occurs when I am touching the filters.  Some crashes occur when I "save and compact".  Others are random.
    17) The paint bucket icon.  Why reverse it for CS3 and CS4 while other tools remain a right hander tool?
    Overall
    Most of the problems I encountered seem to be derived from one main problem:  Bad memory resources management of Flash CS4.
    Anyone else have encountered problems not found in my list?
