Reversing Podcast Play Order

When I'm listening to podcasts on the Nano 3g, the podcasts play in reverse order. How do I get it to play them oldest to newest, instead of newest to oldest?

I have a 3rd generation nano. I've only had it a few weeks. It did work just as my previous nano used to - I could arrange podcasts in any order in a playlist in iTunes, then load the playlist into my nano and the podcasts would show up as a "playlist" under the "Music" menu, and they would play, in the order I specified, one after the other until the playlist was finished. Suddenly, today, this capability ended. Now, I can load a playlist of podcasts into the nano, but they are no longer filed as a "playlist" under the "music" menu, they are just filed as podcasts in alphabetical order and only one will play, then I have to manually choosed the next one and manually start it.
I think its a firmware issue to do with an "upgrade" to the original, satisfactory firmware the nano came with, or its a software issue to do with an "upgrade" to the iTunes software. Its preposterous. This is the feature I use. I only use the nano to listen to podcasts, which I download from all over the world. I want to set up a playlist of these podcasts and set the nano to listen to them one by one. This nano used to do this for me right out of the box, just as my previous nano did for years, and now Apple has decided to screw it with one of their upgrades. Thanks.
I was perfectly satisfied with my earlier nano but its battery was wearing out and I killed the product by trying to replace the battery. Imagine making a device that you cannot reasonably expect to be able to replace the battery in. Thanks, Apple. I was very happy with this new nano until Apple "upgraded" the firmware and/or software for me.
No more ipods, no more Apple products. How Apple maintains any kind of reputation in this idustry is beyond me.

  • IPod nano 5th Generation Blue (8 GB) Podcasts playing order

How can I change the play order of Podcasts.
I want to play the oldest first.
    Secondly
How do I get the nano to continue to play the next podcast automatically.
I am using the nano as a tool to learn an Asian language and the podcasts have video and sound.
Thirdly, is it possible to copy the podcast mp4 files to the nano as video?
If so can I then make a play list to see the videos in the order I want.
If I make a playlist of podcasts I only see the first frame of the video whilst the sound plays and this is no use at all.
    Many thanks

There may be an easier and more elegant way to achieve what I want but rather than continue to be frustrated and hate the current system I have found a work around.
    I downloaded MP3TAG, free.
I copied the whole podcast to a new folder.
I used MP3TAG to easily remove the tags. I also used MP3TAG to change some file numbers to xxxxx001 etc. rather than xxxxx1 to ensure that they are correctly ordered.
With iTunes set to manual, I dragged the new folder and dropped it into my iTunes.
It took a little while, over 1,000 files, but they are now all seen as video files.
I make playlists of the selection I require and they are synched to my iPod.
I am now able to continue with my studies.
    Problem resolved.
However, for an easier life in the future, I would welcome and advice on how to use Podcasts in the way I need to.
    Many thanks.

  • Can't change play order of podcasts

I'm using iTunes 5.0.1 and my iPod shuffle's firmware is 1.1.2. I can't seem to change the play order of podcasts withing the shuffle. I can move them between songs but their (the podcasts) order stays the same relative to each other, i.e. older podcasts always appear after newer ones (based on the date). I can rearrange them when the shuffle is connected and it says updating then ok to disconnect. The thing is, when I disconnect and reconnect, the podcasts' play order revert back.

I discovered all of this to be the case last week when I bought my first shuffle.
I checked the preference for 'leave this iPod in source list'. Then I unplugged the iPod and manually resorted the playlist (which consisted of music and podcasts). Later, I plugged the iPod back in and it updated. The playlist order appeared exactly as I had resorted it however, the changes were NOT transferred to the iPod.
Podcasts and music are handled differently on the iPod shuffle. From what I tell, new podcasts are always placed first when the shuffle is updated. Music is placed last.
Music (and audiobooks) can be manually resorted. Podcasts cannot.
Only music is selected when the iPod shuffle is in 'shuffle' mode. To play podcasts (and audiobooks) your iPod shuffle MUST be in 'play in order' mode.

  • Reverse play order for podcasts

After syncing Podcasts (and iTunesU) the play order on my iPod is reversed so it plays, for instance, episode n, before episode n-1, ..., before episode 2, before episode 1.
    This is very frustrating
I listen to lots of these, so don't want to create smartlists or other manipulations, just play them in date order. Is that too difficult?

Oh? What a strange assumption — I listen to them all
the time. Do you always assume that others share your
ignorance and difficulties? That must be comforting.
Speaking only for myself, then, I have no indication
in my iTunes of your "download" date. "Release" is a
date column that is displayed in the Podcast playlist
section of iTunes and, significantly, it is the only
one which can be sorted upon.
Sorry, it is called "Date Added", not "download date". I checked again and you are right, it is the release date according to which podcasts are sorted (and played in the shuffle). I was confused because of encounters with podcasts where the actual release date and the date of the content are not consistent.
The date info in the Release column never changes; if
it shows September 2005 when I first subscribe to
some podcast, that same date is still displayed after
I download (using "Get") in March 2006.
Sorting on Release in iTunes does just that, and it
is that order which, as far as I've ever been able to
tell or determine, absolutely determines the order of
    podcast play in the Shuffle.
Given the choice between my experience and your
claims and assurances, I believe I'll just stick with
what I know to be the case.
I did but to no avail. The reason I am so ****
    ......... etc.
You did what but to no avail? Put in your
iTunes Feedback and are now cranky that things didn't
just automatically change by that very afternoon?
I did file a bug report approximately 6 months ago and didn't open my mouth again on this issue (removal of restrictions to change play order of podcasts) until now. And yes, after six months I am starting to get cranky.

  • How do i play podcast in order

can anyone help me out.. im new to the whole podcasting thing but im loving it ok its just one problem ... being a noob to this try not to laugh ok but i cant seem to listen to my podcast in order from old to new i have a 5 gen ipod (black). is there anyway to have it play from oldest to newest also is there anyway to have them play back to back like your playlist thank you for the help... oh yea in itunes they are listed from old to new but i cant seem to list them in that order inside of the ipod... even if i cant let me know so i cant sleep at night lol

You are not the only one who experiences this. My iPod as well will display the newest content at the top and put the older content at the bottom. I have tried several methods so I just gave up. So try not to lose any more sleep over it. It's just one of those things;)

  • My iPod classic will not play my podcasts in order.  they are in order in iTunes, i don't have the suffle on.

I'm getting pretty tired Apple Products, having to fix problems after every upgrade,  my Ipod will not play some of my podcasts in order.

All songs play on the laptop windows 8. The second Ipod touch we have - all songs synch to it and play.
But the first Ipod touch we bought - only half (or so) of the songs synch. So I assume there is an issue with the newer Ipod touch. The songs not synching are songs I added to the library from CD's.

  • Shuffle will not play podcasts in order

I have downloaded a French Lesson podcast - which I found through iTunes. No matter how I import the lessons (i.e. directly from the library, or if I make a playlist for the lessons) the will NOT play in order on my iPod Shuffle. I DO have it switched to "play in order" - not shuffle songs. I have rearranged the lessons many times so that #1 on the playlist is Lesson 1, #2 is Lesson 2 and so on. But when I go to play them, the shuffle will start randomly on lesson 9 or 5 - even if I hold down the button to restart it at the beginning. So basically, I never know what lesson I'm in and it's very frustrating.
    Can anyone help?

Following is just a default description which applies to most. There are many differences in how it actually works on specific systems, and all sorts of ways to futz with the system to try to make it work differently. Keeping in mind that YMMV:
    a. Podcasts are one of the special classes in iTunes. The only sort possible with Podcasts in iTunes, as podcasts, is on release date. That's the only column you can click on to reorder things.
    b. All else being equal, podcasts will only play on the iPS in the same order that they are ranked in iTunes itself.
    c. By 'in iTunes' I mean in the Podcasts playlist. You can re-order things in pretty much whatever way you want to in playlists you create yourself, but that won't (in most cases) affect the play order.
    As for some other things:
    1) Podcasts won't play at all unless you're in the 'Play In Order' position. That doesn't have any actual meaning with its order or play, however.
    2) You don't hold any button down to restart it at the beginning. A quick triple-click of the Play button does that.

  • Podcast Playlist Ordering Reversed (6th Generation Nano)

For several years now I have had a smart Podcast playlist in iTunes that captured all my unheard podcasts in order of oldest to newest.  This playlist synced to my 6th gen Nano, no issue.  I recently had to send my Nano in for repair (Apple decided to just give me a new one to replace).  When configuring the new nano, my playlist no longer exists.  I fixed that problem on the Podcast playlist option.  Now however, my playlist only plays newest to oldest. I have checked that iTunes playlist in sort order I want, same with Playlist listing when Nano connected, etc..
Any suggestions on how to fix?  Looking to get my Podcast playlist back to playing oldest to newest (work with my prior 6th Gen Nano just last week).
    Thanks.

  • Manual Play Order for Podcast "My Stations" in iTunes?

I have created my own podcast station and have set the "Play Order" to "Manual". However, I can't figure out how to move around the individual podcast episodes to manipulate the play order. I expected to be able to drag-and-drop the episodes in whatever order I wanted. Can anyone help me figure out how to manually reorder the play list??

I would also like guidance. I can create a Playlist, and that works fine to sort podcasts manually, and I can sort the podcasts in the "My Podcasts" pane, but I cannot seem to adjust the order when set to "Manual" in the "My Stations" pane.

  • Podcasts Sort Order

I don't know where else to suggest this to the Apple Podcasts people, but one of the biggest annoyances with this app for me is that the sort order for each Podcast and the Unplayed Podcasts lists is newest to oldest, this is exactly opposite of what I'd want.  I've been listening to Podcasts with iTunes and my iPhone since the beginning.  I have always had 2 smart playlists with my unplayed podcasts in them, one sorted by shortest to longest and the other sorted by release date oldest to newest.  I've had to live with every other iTunes version breaking the syncing of the Podcast Smart Playlist order and was ecstatic when the Podcasts app came out, thinking I might not have to deal with this anymore, but no.....and I've checked every release and still no better.  I end up going back to my (broken again since last iTunes update) sync'd Smart Playlists in Music.  *sigh*  It's almost enough to drive me to one of the 3rd party apps, but I like to be able to walk in from listening to Podcasts, sync my phone and continue listening to the podcasts on my Mac, none of the 3rd parties give me a way to do that, and that's even broke when you uses the Podcasts app.  So again, back to the Music app.

    I can't agree more.
I remember many moons ago when someone changed the podcast sorting order in iTunes and caused this exact same problem—all of your podcasts were in the reverse order that you'd want to listen to them. Fortunately someone was listening (no pun intended) and it was fixed again in the next relase.
What's shocking to me is that this is the third (THIRD!) update to the Podcast app and this problem is still with us. Worse, Apple has eliminated the podcasts from the iTunes and Video apps, where you could play them in the correct order.
This is a podcast app. A PODCAST APP! It's only job is to play podcasts. Who plays podcasts backwards? You'd think this would be bug #1.
Sorry for the rant, but I've almost had to stop listenting to podcasts on my iPhone becuse this app is so broken and there are no alternatives. Normally I listent to podcasts at the gym or while driving, but now you have to do so much fiddling with the app (quick! stop the next one playing, go back to the menu, try to find where you are in the list, start the real next one) that I've just put my iPhone away.

  • ITunes 11.1 and / or the Podcast app on iOS 7 will not allow me to create play lists in iTunes. Is there an app that will allow me to create podcast plays lists and play them on the iPhone running iOS7 ?

iOS 7 will not alow podcasts lists in the music app so we have to use the podcast app
but iTunes 11.1 and / or the Podcast app on iOS 7 will not show podcast play lists created in iTunes (well maybe it does but clicking on the podcasts app causes iTunes to freeze so can not select)
sometime some folders created in iTunes have appeared with the Podcast app but others not.
creating an on the go list in my iphone is agony - I have over 100 podcasts I have subscribed to and when creating a list you can not view by most recently downloadded podcast
AND you can't search (no search bar) so I have to scroll through to find a podcast that might have been updated - but they are not in any logocal order that I can work out (not alphbetical or date added).
Video podcasts are mixed with audio
podcasts I delete (unsubscribe to) keep coming back
    its a disaster
my question is there an alternative iPhone app that works with iTunes
no I don't want an app where I have to download to the phone directly, thats 100 subscriptions I will have to make agaian

Agree about the disaster part. I haven't found a fix within iTunes.
I gave up and switched to downcast 2 days ago. Even though it was a hassle to re-subscribe to all my podcasts, im so much happier.
To make switching easier, I found that in iTunes you can "get info" on the podcast and copy the RSS address to the clipboard. Put all of these in a message note. When iCloud syncs the note to your phone, you can copy and paste the urls into downcast one at a time to subscribe.
Downcast has crashed on me occassionally when I'm subscribing to feeds, but so far it has recovered gracefully each time and no data was lost.

  • Podcast list order in iTunes on Mac

What is the default Podcast list order in iTunes on Mac? It is not alphabetical, chronologivcal, played/unplayed?
I simply want an alphabetical list of my Podcasts so I can locate quickly.
It wasn't like this before was it?
iTunes needs working on Mr. Ive.
Oh yes .. question .. how do I put my Podcasts into an alphabetical list in iTunes on my Mac?
    Thank you.

  • I have a 1st & 4th gen ipod shuffle.  When I copy a playlist to the 1st gen it plays back correctly.  The 4th gen plays back the same playlist alphabetically by artist.  The copy by play order function makes no difference.  Any suggestions?

I have a 1st & 4th gen Ipod shuffle.  When I copy a playlist to the older shuffle it plays back in order.  When I copy a playlist to the 4th gen shuffle it plays by alphabetically by artist.  I used the copy by play order but with no change.  Any suggestions?

This is crazy. What are those guys thinking. I would love to have my 2nd generation ipod shuffle back - it was so easy to use, so easy to operate, alas it was lost/stolen! There are 2 big disasterous (disaster to ease of use) changes in the ipod 4th generation. This particularly relates to podcasts. One is they only play in order by source/type of podcast. You cannot break out of that unless, you have someone to show you how to use the voice over which is not covered anywhere on the very thin manual or elsewhere. Secondly and just as bad but related also, you cannot line them up on your shuffle by date, preference, anything. ONLY apple will do this for you. I hate the thing and will return it today after visiting Apple 3 days in a row to try and get answers, trying to apply the answers and realizing beside the fact that some of the answers given were wrong, they were not going to lead to ease of use. Who said this was better? I was struggling with this (not knowing how to break out of one type of podcast) until i went to Apple and talked to about 4 people who knew less than i did about the shuffle. OUr family has just bought 2 new macbook pros for my son and wife. I have had my macbook for 4 years and love it. I had my ipod shuffle (2 gen) for the same time and loved it but now I don't trust Apple. Are they going to make changes just to make changes. Get some consumer advice, please not just from nerds who want more buttons but from everyday people.

  • ITunes play order

I typed a long post and apple would not post it. so I don't want to bother typing it again.
iTunes does not let one set the play order, period.
This is a major SOFTWARE Screwup.
    I'm done with iPhones.
    BYE.
    Mike

    Chris,
    Thank you for your reply!
I've been using iTunes since 2001. It was released in January, 2001..
I've been through every revision and update on both Windows and Mac OS machines.
My original iPod is still fully functional and in use in one of my cars.
ITunes used to let you create a play list, sort it to your liking and sync it to you iPhone. the order would be as expected. a few years ago this became an issue. I started using iTunes for podcasts about 10 or 11 years ago. It was easy. Make a playlist, (smart playlist) and sync the phone. The play order was set by sorting by date of the podcast and some how iTunes sorted it correctly even with several podcasts dated the same day.
Then some genius got the idea to separate podcasts from Music and introduced a separate program on the iPhone for podcasts. In that program the sort order was alway based on Alphabetic order regardless of how you sorted the list in iTunes. There was a fix to force podcasts back into Music on the iPhone but that option soon disappeared.
I have a 2013 car (A8) and its MMI unit cannot see Podcasts as a separate source, just the iTunes playlists. That is why I change the Media Kind to music to force the podcasts back into the playlists with the music.
(Chris, maybe you have a special smart car which can play the podcasts from the podcast program, I don't know.  And YES CHRIS I know I can use the blue tooth to stream the Podcasts from the Podcast program, but I want to use the display in the car to see the lists)
So I (like many other users) learned how to change the Podcasts Media Kind to Music so iTunes would put the podcasts in playlists on the iPhone music app.
BUT iTunes DOES NOT, I REPEAT, DOES NOT CONSISTENTLY KEEP THE SORT ORDER CORRECT WHEN SYNCED TO THE iPHONE.
It used to sequence by alphabetic order based on the name of the podcast. So I started renaming the playlists by adding a number to the beginning of the title and then sort in iTunes by the name. Then when I synced to the iPhone the playlist would be in the correct order.
THIS HAS CHANGED.  It no longer will keep the sort order consistent.  Sometimes it appears  to now GROUP the podcasts by the last character in the name of each podcast alphabetically.  But if I re-sync the order is somehow correct.  Re-sync again and it changes.  There is some odd thing happening with the software.
(I don’t know why they have not added the ability to sort the playlists on the iPhone directly yet, but it will probably show up at some point).
It’s frustrating because it should be easy.
By the way, Expert Chris, have you any experience with iBooks?  There’s a nightmare of sorting issues.  Try importing a Book to iBooks that you did not buy from iTunes……check out the chapter sequence on those.  oh, that’s right I must be too stupid to get that to work also.
    End Rant.
I was just trying to sync a few podcast so I could go out and mow my lawn and listen.  I work 80 to 90 hours a week and the last thing I want to do on my weekend off is waste time with ever changing software like iTunes.  Wait a minute it will change!  Perhaps iTunes will stop asking me if I want others to access it every time I boot the iMac?  Maybe, Maybe not.  Oh I forgot, it’s probably a user error and there are no other post about this issue which have been online for about a year……

  • Can I change the playing order?

So it's 2009, I'm 25 and a big fan of technology, but it was only yesterday that I bought my very first iPod. I'm loving it, but I have a small (very small) issue.
I transferred a CD to the iPod using iTunes, but it put the very first song at the end of the album, instead of the beginning. Everything else is in order, and none of my other CDs did this. Is there a way I can change the playing order of songs on my iPod so that it's correct?

When you right click on a file and go to "get info," you'll then go to the "info" tab. Once you're there, there's a field where you can type in the track # (it'll say track __ out of __). The second blank should be filled in with the number representing how many tracks are in the album. You go from file to file typing in the correct track number.
Once you've done that if they still aren't showing up in the proper order in your library, you just right click the bar that labels the sections (like name, time, artist, etc.) and a list will pop up with all the different sections you can have displayed. All the ones that are already being displayed have check marks next to them. The second to last one is "track number." You'll want to click on this. Once you're looking at the album again in your library, you'll see the new section added. If you click on the bar that's labeled "track number" to highlight it, it should put all the songs in the right order. If it flips everything backwards, starting with the last song first, just click on the label again and the order will be reversed.
