Revert to apple for software updates
Hello,
I set a Leopard Macbook to look at our Tiger server for updates not realizing that Tiger does not pull down Leopard specific updates. I set this with Software Update Enabler, and have tried to restore defaults but it still attempts to pull from our server instead. Is there a way to revert back to the Apple Servers for this?

You need to remove all traces of the third party app "Software Update Enabler". If this information is not contained in any documentation, you will need to contact the developer.
Always beware of any third party software that does not have enough documentation to allow you to remove it.

I recently heard about malware that can be introduced by downloading an innocent-looking software update, e.g., Adobe Acrobat or Flashplayer. I'd like to set all my programs either to update manually or to automatically let me know that an update is available but not download (e.g., in Microsoft Office).
OS 10.6 has always notified me automatically and asked me if I wanted to install. I'd like to put a "brake" on my tendency to just click "Install," so I looked for software update preferences, but couldn't find them. Can anyone point me to an Apple article that tells me how to do this? Thanks!If you are simply referring to Apple software updates then it will depend on the OS you are using. For example, there will be no more updates for 10.6.8 Snow Leopard than what is revealed by you clicking 'software update' ... unless some mind blowing security matter arises. You need to be able to choose once you get to Yosemite and that is where Eric's suggestion of the forums is so relevant. The newest OS tends to have its early updates fairly regularly as the public at large find its faults. As I understand it, there are some who doubt 10.6.3 sufficiently to discourage me, if I used that OS.
And I have to agree with Bob. Too many rogue companys can trick you into downloading basically decent software but having injected malware before you get it. SOFTONIC, DOWNLITE, MACPAW ZEOBIT and anything UTORRENT are to avoid. -

Apple doesn't charge for iOS 4 or newer. To upgrade to 3.1.3(only necessary on the first generation models), there is a charge.

Install Mac OS X lion fine without any issue
I'm trying to dual boot Lion and Wind 7 on different HD but when I ran the bootcamp assistance for software update I get an error that it can't download from the server.
I also try without downloading the software and do the installation but it fail. It seem that this bootcamp is giving problem so I revert back to SN leopard and it does the same. Why can't the bootcamp assistance update the software, is it something that I did wrong or my system is not supporting dual booting.
Here is my spec
Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66
Identifiers: Mac Pro - MA356LL/A - MacPro1,1* - A1186MacPro1,1 has EFI32 and does not support Windows 7 very well, can't boot 64-bit, can't use all your RAM.
There have always been trouble and issues, ways around those, but a big PITA too.

Nothing to do with Lion actually. Other than downloading drivers from Apple servers has been mostly hit or miss, with miss being 90%.
I have rebuned the DVD (make a new ISO image using Imgburn etc) but now I just install Windows on PC then move the drive to the Mac. A lot easier.
Without 64-bit you can't use more than 1.9GB RAM. And you need Windows 7 Pro to use both processors. -
itunes says that the version of software on my ipod touch 3rd gen is up to date, but IOS 5 is avaliable. I have checked for software updates for days but it keeps saying that 4.2.1 is the current version. Why cant i get IOS 5?

because you do not have a 3rd generation device. The OS Version says so , otherwise you would be at 4.3.5 minimum and also Itunes is also always correct in determining if you have the latest OS ( if not it fetches the newest from Apple's Servers ) . And because a 2nd generation iPod stops at 4.2.1 you can't get the newest OS, because your device is old. Buy a new iPod , they have iOS5 preinstalled. -
I received a pop-up telling me that OSX 10.8.3 was available. I started the download/ installation, but something interrupted the process and it was not downloaded and/or installed. Now when I ask for software updates, I det the message that "no updates available." What do I do to get thei update?
If the installation didn't finish, maybe OS X 10.8.3 was installed partially, and it doesn't show up because the updater already updated the OS X version to 10.8.3, although it doesn't mean that everything was installed and updated. Just to make sure that everything is updated to the version included in 10.8.3, reinstall it with the Combo installer > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640

If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

When we go to Settings>General, we do not have an option for Software Update...only About and Usage. How do we update the system on our iPad?
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Multiple CatalogURL's for Software Updates
I am using Workgroup Manager to set the CatalogURL for software updates. Can I set multiple url's for software updates so if one address is not reachable the client will look for the next URL?
Ah yes... Okay. What you could do as a non-automated solution when you can't get a hold of the corporate server...
In Terminal:
sudo defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
Take note of the catalogURL. It should be on the first line and will start with http://
Once you've written down EXACTLY what the URL is...
sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
This will eliminate the reference to the software update server you have set up and default back to apple's server.
If you want to get things back to the way they were, you need to write the defaults back.
Like this:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL ***URL GOES HERE*** -

What does it mean when my ipad is in Recovery mode? It's connected to my imac for software update and it says I must "restore" the ipad before itunes can be used. Will I lose everything on my ipad?
Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

Unfortunately, at this point, you must restore the device before you can move on. There is nothing you can do to avoid it now. -

It sounds like you are unable to download the iOS 8.0.2 update either, over the air, or using iTunes. If you are updating the software on your phone in Settings > General > software update I would recommend starting with this article:

Will Apple issue software updates to 10.7.4 Lion ?
I have an early 2008 MacBook running 10.7.4 Lion. 4.5 years old and running perfectly. It is too old to run Mountain Lion, so am am concerned that Apple won't produce software updates to Lion.
1. Based on past experience, will Apple issue software updates?
2. If the answer to 1 is negative, then I am very surprised at the lack of outcry on this and other forums and from the bloggers about this situation, where faithful users of Macs are effectively being forced to buy a new one to get a supported OS. Am I missing something here?Jonathan74000 wrote:

Yes, every OSX ever released in the past has reached a point of no further update support. Security update carry on a little longer, but eventually no further support is given. Snow Leopard is in that catagorie at present. Lion may well have further updates, only Apple knows that. It would not surprise to see a 10.7.5 update but then maybe not. The 12 monthly OSX releases that Apple seems to be leaning towards may well change the pattern of support we have come to know in the past. Lion may be supported for some time in regards to security updates, but then again it may be on it's last legs. Time will tell.
