Revert to ARD 2.x?

My boss 'helped' me over the weekend by installing ARD 3 on my workstation. Of course, she didn't bother to read any of the docs or she'd know installing it in a lab with computers running Jaguar is a bad idea.
I've reinstalled ARD 2 but after registering it the application installs files and then quits. What do I have to remove from the computer to get ARD 2 working again? Of course I don't have the ARD 3 CD to check for an uninstaller. Is there one?

Follow the instructions here:
How to uninstall or disable Apple Remote Desktop 2 or 3
to strip off the ARD 3 client and administrator. Then reinstall ARD 2 on the clients using the updater and reinstall the 2.2 administrator on your admin station. You may have to toggle the Remote Desktop agent off and back on in the client Sharing system preference before the admin app will recognize them.
Hope this helps.

  • Can not revert to Mavericks

    Hello all
I have Yosemite and as you are all aware, WiFi issues are still there, my WiFi is completely off and would'n't turn on. Sometimes after my MacBook Air sleeps or is rebooted, the WiFi is magically on, but it's bound to cut off on the next sleep/reboot.
So I decided to revert to Mavericks using a bootable USB drive since I don't have an available Time Machine backup.
The installation process starts, then I get an error saying Installation can't be done and to look at the error log.
In the error log, I see " Error opening package "OSInstall.mpkg"."
The USB boot drive was created from my own Mavericks purchased in the apptore, however.
Anyways, the error log is as follows:

If that fails to work, then it was not properly made or completed. It should boot the computer to a screen similar to that of a Recovery HD. Without a Mavericks installer of your own there is no way to restore Mavericks because it can no longer be downloaded. You have the option of Mountain Lion to purchase or Yosemite which is free. You might try fixing your Yosemite system.
Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • MacMini Server @ MBA 13inch ARD

    Hej,
I wanna buy a MM Server with 2x 256G SSDs / and upgrade to 16G RAM as my VMware Fusion Virtualization Box. Running different virtualization solutions in a box, in connection with an iSCSI or NFS share (such a virtual cluster in a box, with one VM as a guest). I know that the 2Ghz CPU doesnt support VT-D for vm direct path IO (but I dont need to map physical devices in a VM). 1st the Mac Mini Server need to operate headless, so no display attached.
As 2nd I want to buy a "ultra portable" MBA 13 inch for remote access and redesigning some VMs before upload / change. So my main question is: I want to connect via Apple Remote Display, even if the MM Server isnt connected to an ext. display.
So are there any display resolution issues if MM Server is headless. I ask, because as far as I know from a friend, if u connect the MM Server to an TV with full HD 1920 resolution, ARD will use the same and thats bad because I need to scroll down and up (MBA resolution is less).
Yes, I can use RDP to any Win realated VM... But I like ARD
Many thanks for any help on this topic.
    Cheers
    Tappov
    sorry for the bad english.

A headless Mac will generally revert to 1024x768 resolution which is deliberate since this is a suitable minimum to allow things like ARD to work.
If you have some spare cash, it is possible to get a Gefen DVI Detective+ to memorise vidoe settings and keep them available even if the monitor is turned off or disconnected, this would allow you to connect a monitor to the Mac mini, configure it to say 1280x1024 then disconnect the monitor and the Mac mini will remain at that resolution.
    See http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=4715

  • Has anyone solved why the scanner would cause ARD to freeze

If I try to scan a network range, it comes back with nothing.  If I click on my list, it r-authenticates with every machine.  I can Control or Observe machines with no problem.  The scanner seems to be the issue.

Are you asking why it happens or how to get around it?  There have been several threads that
    1.  Can control/observe
    2.  Can't copy
    3.  Can't install
    4.  Can't scan a network range but can scan bonjour.
Is that your issue?  No one has come up with a why or a permanent fix but the best I've seen for reducing the annoyance somewhat is
Select Remote Desktop Preferences and task server.
Set ARD to use a task server - for me it works best to put in the ip of the ARD admin computer I am at
Then (if necessary - sometimes it pops back on its on) revert back to using this computer.
This does it for me for anywhere from hours to days.  But not permanently.

  • Station name reverting on logout

    hello,
this is not all that uncommon, but i haven't seen a solution.
i have a computer, i need to change its name. i do this via sharing prefs, no problem. as soon as i log out it reverts back to the old station name.
i've tried this as root, user, admin, done it off the network and on, repaired permissions, ran auto on applejack, this happened on 10.5.4, and updating it to 10.5.6 didn't help. i've also tried it via ARD scutil command (known not to work, but just to test) with no one logged in.
here's the log snip to see it in action. i want it pla-sales14, and then i log out and it reverts.

    any ideas?

    Hi,
You have two components to this question.
The datasource in Weblogic which connect to your database.
the ADF app module which takes a connection of this datasource and uses it to connect to the database.
    Both concepts use pooling.
The datasource pooling you can adjust in Weblogic.
I dont think you need to adjust these settings
The app module pooling under configuration for your app module.
The 10 you mentioned is the default value for application modules reference size.
This is the number of application modules ADF keeps ready for use in case a user needs one.
This is because application modules are rather expensive objects and creating them takes time, having 10 ready means the chance for ad-hoc creation is smaller.
if you dont like these values, change them.

  • Can curtain mode in ARD be set to not fail open?

    Hello,
Apple Remote Desktop curtain mode seems to fail open by default: if you have curtain mode enabled, and the ARD session disconnects, the remote desktop reverts to an unlocked desktop.
Can ARD be set to fail closed? ie: if the connection drops or the app closes/crashes, then the remotely controlled screen should ideally revert to a locked desktop, if not by default, then as a user-selectable setting.
Would anyone happen to know whether this is currently possible, or if it will require a Feature Enhancement Request?
    Thanks,

You could assign their MAC addresses a static record on your local DNS server. That way, when you scan the network in ARD, you'll see them under the DNS Name tab.

  • ARD 3.7 and VoiceOver

    Hi all.
OK here's my background. I'm a blind IT engineer / tech admin and support a list supporting blind mac users. My server is a 2010 customised mbp 2.66 i7 with 8gb ram and 2x 512gb SSD drives (drive 2 replaces superdrive bay)
I'm now using Mavericks with Server 3, Deploy Studio and ARD 3.7
    Here's the problem.
For me to work with a blind client's mac relying on voiceover, I cannot grab system audio from the client, nor can I use Voiceover keys, etc to control the client's mac to conduct training, repairs and management.
I was hoping that ARD 3.7 would cover my needs but it isn't. the only use it can prove useful for is catalogueing networked systems, setting up routines that don't require direct UI interaction, etc. this is a real disappointment for me.
I've emailed apple accessibility and sent a bug report to apple feedback. heard nothing.
I have road tested and researched various products besides ARD 3.7 and either companies want yearly subscriptions  which in some cases require pro licenses to be purchased. in one particular developer's pack you have to purchase the pro app and central to administer client management, reports, etc. without that, the features needed including full keyboard control and audio interfacing make my work extremely difficult.
in cases where I'm supporting a user who is blind / visually impaired and also has learning difficulties, instructions and detailed settings are of no use because the client cannot fully understand the processes involved, in cases where voiceover isn't playing ball for the client, I could step in to resolve the issue, use terminal within their system, conduct in-depth repairs, set up policies, etc.
If there's any apple Admins here, apple developers reading this forum, please can you integrate voiceover support to client level as well as audio support? there are many blind It techs, developers, engineers, admins, tutors and trainers across the world and this product would make a change. After all, we blind mac users represent apple marketing your products in a way that changes other peoples lives for the better. Any support on this would be much appreciated.
    Ed

Not sure how that would happen but you should be able to revert to the Mac App Store version with the following steps:
    1. Launch the App Store app
    2. Go to the Purchases secton and verify that Apple Remote Desktop is showing in your list
    3. Assuming it's in your list, delete Remote Desktop.app from /Applications
    4. Verify that Remote Desktop.app is not installed on any other mounted volumes using Spotlight
    5. If it is installed then either unmount those volumes or delete the app from those other locations
    6. Go back to the Purchases section of the App Store app
    7. If Apple Remote Desktop is shown as "Installed" then select "Reload Page" from the "Store" menu
    8. The entry for Apple Remote Desktop should now give you the option to "Install"
    9. Click "Install"
After installation you should have the correct Mac App Store version that does not prompt for a serial number.

  • ARD asking for Serial Number after Upgrade to OSX 10.9 and ARD 3.7?

    Hello All,
I bought ARD 3.6.1 back in 2012 from MAC Store. Yesterday, I decided to upgrade to OSX Mavericks and the upgrade forced ARD to update to 3.7 from 3.6.1 and now ARD is asking for serial number...  Never had a Serial Number since I bought it from Mac Store. Anyone with same problem?
    Many Thanks in Advance!
App Store Update says I have 3.7 already installed.

  • Xserve running 10.4.x reverted to 10.3???

I have an XSERVE that was originally purchased with OS X (10.3) in 2005. Within 6 months, we upgraded to Tiger and have continually kept the software updates up, ending up at 10.4.x.
A few days ago, I had to Remote Desktop in to troubleshoot an issue with MySQL socket errors. I got the standard 10.4 login screen, and tried to fire up both Server Admin and Workgroup Admin (just to review). Trying to open both applications gave me a variation of this error (paraphrased): "Can not run [Server Admin] in this version of Mac OS X."
Thinking there might be an account/privilege problem, I logged out intending to log in as root. As soon as the login screen popped back up, I was surprised to see that it looked like the old 10.3 login window (populated with a list of all account names and icons). I logged in only to find that I could still not run those admin applications.
I logged back out, quitting Remote Desktop to try "clearing" whatever the issue might be, if it wasn't server based. After that point I could no longer see the server showing up as available. It appears as "offline," and returns the Mac OS X version as 10.3. It also returns the IP as 0.0.0.0, even though I can still access the website on that server using the internal 192.168.x.x address, or the external IP address. I can also still mount the shared volumes from networked computers, using AFP and Samba, so it appears to be functional in most ways.
    The big issues are:
    1) I need to use ARD to troubleshoot the MySQL issue, but do not have any sign that it is possible. I tried name based connections and IP based scanner connections...no luck either way.
    2) Why would the OS X version apparently revert from 10.4.x to 10.3? I don't know if this could have been related to low disk space (at that moment 16GB free out of 1.2 TB, which has been remedied to 50GB free temporarily), or if it is something else entirely. I am continually moving data to another volume, so I may be at 150GB+ free later today.
I called Apple Care, but found I have no support contract as of April. However, one tech said reversion to 10.3 was "impossible". Another said he'd never see it, but that an old .plist/config file may be to blame, however, he recommended posting here. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

No secondary OS on any volumes. I decided to remove the FC card connecting the XSERVE to the XRAID just to pop the video card back into that slot. The machine comes up into 10.3 still, I can't run any server admin items. I started it back up from the install DVD to check what Disk Utilities might reveal.
Apparently I have disk issues on the startup disk (a RAID 5 array). It gets through about 75% of the check before this comes up:
    Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair.
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count.
(It should be 45613367 instead of 45574565)
The volume RAID needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS volume checked.
    Volume needs repair
Running a "Repair Disk" afterward leads to the same result (Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.) without resolving the problem.
I thought I might take the OS from its 10.3 to Leopard Server, but seeing disk issues makes me think I should take care of this before attempting an upgrade of any kind.
How serious is this, and if Disk Utility can't fix it, is there another way to address the problem?
    Thanks.

  • Using Ethernet network and Wireless to connect to ARD

Hi, I am using ARD to connect 2 mac minis, 1 macbook pro and a G4 powerbook. I have been having some serious issues with trying to network them all together. When I connect 3 of the machines using ethernet and an airport extreme everything is fine, but the 4th machine is uncontrollable. It shows up on the scanner but shows up as offline. Has anyone had any luck using a combination of ethernet and wireless? It is all through the same network, but the hope is that the 2 laptops can connect wirelessly to the mac minis.

    MATT BANEY wrote:
No my DSL modem is not a dumb one, its a DSL modem router, "qwest Actiontec dsl modem wireless gateway", GT701.
To avoid confusion in future support threads, you should refer to that as a "router" or "modem/router", rather than simply as a modem.
This configuration works fine, both computers are on the network, get assigned different IP addresses by the DSL Modem, and most of the time can see each other and the internet just fine, as long as the iMac keeps the Network settings that I set, for the IP address of the DSL-Modem router ("xxx.xx.0.1"), but occassionally after a restart it will revert back to using "xxx.xx.1.1" for the router IP address which is not a valid IP address on my LAN.
Why would the iMac try and use the old settings when I specifically set and LOCKED the correct settings?
If the "modem router" is configured to be a DHCP server and if your computers are configured to get their network settings via DHCP (Network panel of System Preferences, "Configure IPv4" set to "Using DHCP"), then in theory you shouldn't have that problem.

  • ARD 3.8.2 v1.1 crash Admin

I've (had) the newest client (ARD 3.8.2 v1.1) installed on two different machines this morning (both with ARD admin). One works fine, but the other one crashes at launch of the admin app. How can I revert back to (yesterday's) v1.0 of the client (which didn't crash on this machine)?

Yes, the Admin Console app crashes upon launch (on that machine). I've found the client piece (down in /Library/CoreServices...) and brought the older one back (via TimeMachine) and that seems to have done the trick for now. It'll be mid-late next week before I can do further trouble-shooting. Didn't try uninstalling.

  • Changing a Quicktime preference using ARD

I work in an elementary school and manage lots of machines. I need to change a Quicktime preference for my Student user. This user does not have rights to system preferences and it will be very time consuming to change this on each machine. I'm looking for a set of commands that would allow me to do this via ARD.
What I need it to do is to go into the Advanced tab of the Quicktime Preference and check the box that says Enable Flash.
    Can anyone out there help?
Thanks in advance if you can!

    Hi Tim,
    >>However, if I remove the computer from the domain, the username reverts back to the previous one and the password seems to get corrupted and is neither the new one or the old one.
How is it going? I agree with Idan that we can also try to use the setting
Accounts: Rename administrator account to change the name of administrator to see if the issue persists.
Regarding the deprecation of password changing function of GPP, this is mainly due to security concern that GPP stores password in Sysvol which is accessible to all domain users.

  • Anyone tried the new ARD Client just released today (2-1-2012)

Has anyone tried installing and running the new ARD Client released today, Feb. 1, 2012?  The info provided by Apple about this update seems to be kind of thin in exactly what was changed.3.5.2,  It lists only screen sharing and controlling a computer with two displays.  If you have installed it what have you found as both improved or degraded.  What OS do you have installed on your client systems?  Any changes specific to Lion or Snow Leopard?

Today I connected to a remote server running Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 and ran the updater for Apple Remote Desktop 3.5.2.
It successfully completed and I was able to re-connect. Unfortunately I can no longer "drag and drop". When I pick up an icon, for example, I cannot release it (drop). My controlling computer is running OS X 10.7.3.
I may try to revert to the earlier version of ARD if possible. This is a pretty big problem for me; so I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with this updater. It may be that a reboot will fix the problem; but I have to wait for a convenient time to reboot my server. I need to also test connecting from a 10.6.8 workstation instead of 10.7.3, as this may be a "Lion controlling Snow Leopard" issue.
Either way, I would be wary of this updater.

  • Can my "techie" users cripple ARD?

I manage about 340 Mac users mainly with ARD, but have Casper installed on the machines as well. The two applications complement each other well, one picking up where the other is deficient.
My problem; I have a few users (who are in IT and have admin access to their machines) that I can no longer Observe or Control using ARD. I can perform other operations, including installing and copying files. All of the Sharing Remote Management settings on those machines look right, and just like the rest of our machines.
My question: Could these guys have changed some hidden setting somewhere that would kill my ability to Observe and Control? The ONLY machines on my network that behave this way all belong to a small group of developers that work together. Our OS comes from an image that keeps all machines the same. Even after re-imaging and verifying that they work OK, within a few days, these boxes revert to unable to Observe/ Control. NO other machines on my network behave this way.
DISCLAIMER: I am not in any way trying to spy on them. I have 340 users that I manage. I just don't have time to sit and watch them if I wanted to. It is just annoying that they see fit to wreck this functionality and I can't seem to find what they have done to disable it.
What they don't know is that I can still Observe and Control their machines with Casper if I need to…

If they set up a firewall (and they could), wouldn't that block all of the activity in ARD? I can still push software to them via copy and install. I just can't observe or control.
No, the functions use different IP ports. Observe and Control uses port 5900 (the standard VNC port), while the other functions use 3283.
They could have installed a third party VNC piece, but would that only break observe and control as well?
For the same reason, installing another VNC client would only break Observe and Control. If Casper is using VNC and works on all the systems, even the ones that ARD will not work with, then these suggestions probably aren't valid.
EDIT: Casper does not use VNC for Observe and Control, so it's not using port 5900. So blocking of port 5900 or use of a third-party VNC server are still possibilities, since the port could be blocked but Casper still work.

  • ARD screen sharing not working in Snow Leopard Lab

I have a lab of 24 “education” imacs in commercial art lab and another 12 -27” imacs in a video production lab on a LAN
They are running OSX 10.6.8 and Adobe apps such as Illustrator, InDesign and Premiere
I had been using Remote Desktop 3.5 screen sharing to demo software to students at their workstations.
I updated to Lion over the summer and found it to be a total train wreck in my lab so I reverted the lab back to Snow Leopard.
However I no longer have the dmg file to reinstall ARD 3.5.
The only thing on the App store is 3.6 which does not work for screen sharing to the lab machines.
I can observe them, shut them down, I can control one at a time, I can even share my screen to ONE workstation at a time.
So right now I have NO WAY to demo software to my students through screen sharing AT ALL!
I put Lion on just the Admin computer and downloaded 3.6 and I can observe the lab machines, I can shut them down, but I can’t share a screen!
I’m told by Apple that there is NO WAY to get a copy of screen sharing software that will actually work in my lab.
I'm thinking all I would require is a copy of the ARD 3.5.1 dmg file but I can't find a place to download it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

what a pain, buying old software to fix the new software.  Here is what I'm working on to work around it for now.
So far in small scale its worked perfectly.
Here is what I'm trying to setup (hopefully it doesn't confuse the teacher or student too much):
    1. Install Vine Server 4.01 on the teacher's computer.
    2. Setup Vine Server to allow multiple connections, and disable Keyboard, Mouse, and Clipboard input from incoming connections.
    3. Turn on the Vine Server.
    4. Create a desktop shortcut to use Apples VNC Client with the IP address of the Teacher's computer.
    5. When student's click on this they will connect to the teacher's screen but not be able to control, only observe.
    6. Teacher can disable the Student's access simply by turning the Vine Server back off.
So far in small scale with 5 computers its worked well (Better than ARD at least!).  Not sure how its going to do with a class of 27 computers.  We DO have gigabit ethernet.
