Reverting to Edge from Wifi

I've had my iPhone for 3 days. I cannot get it to stay on WiFi.
It shows a check by my home WiFi (I've logged in with the WEP) but the "E" shows in the corner.
I've reset the network connections and "forgotten" the network and re-connected. It still will not stay on WiFi. At a public place yesterday with free WiFi, I had the same problem.

I am suddenly having the SAME issues. I have a home wireless network, and for some reason my phone will say that it is connected, and continue to say that, but the blue E remains on the top of the screen, and I cannot stay on WiFi....Please, someone help us fix the issue.
Mind you, this iPhone is a normal, non-hacked phone running the 1.1.1 update. The day I bought it was the day that update came out, and is what iTunes installed on the phone.

FIX for: no Wi-Fi, reverts to EDGE, or "slow" - using computer as router.

This is a fix for a special case: if you have a Mac hooked up directly to the internet via cable modem or DSL, and you use the built-in airport to share the connection using "personal web sharing", and your Firewall is on.
If you turn on Wi-Fi on the iPhone, you may seem to connect (You get the WiFi bars on the phone) but you cannot access internet (or it's slow - cause it reverts to Edge). You may get no IP address on the phone, or perhaps one starting with 169.
The fix is to turn off "Block UDP Traffic" from the "Advanced..." options of the "Firewall" section of the "Sharing" System Preference panel.
I think it would be nice to be able to block UDP traffic other than iPhone, but it's all or none.
I haven't seen this metioned anywhere else, so could someone please pass this along to Apple?

How Do I know When Edge or WIFI is in use?

I have read many of the discussion forums and the manual and many other blogs. Bottom line is the phone will not work as a phone if the phone is using the edge network. Is there a way to know you are using your edge network? Does using the WIFI prevent the phone from being a phone? I have woke up my phone many times to find that Safari is still on the page I last used. Or an application like GasBag. Does this mean it could not recieve a call while asleep but connected to Edge or WIFI? Is it really disconnected? How do you know?

Check the symbol next to the carrier name (just to the right of the AT&T in your case). It shows for Wi-Fi, 3G for the 3G network, E for the EDGE network, and a dot for the GPRS network. If connected to Wi-Fi or 3G, you can access data and voice at the same time. On EGDE or GPRS, you can access data or voice, not both simultaneously (meaning if you're in the middle of a download, a call will go straight to voicemail).

How to prevent EDGE from ever being used

Hello all,
I would like to fully prevent EDGE from being used from my iphone. I do understand that whenever I have a wifi connection EDGE will not be used, however...I have also noticed that if my wifi drops for a second (which even happens at home ocassionally) then EDGE will kick in... I want to prevent this.
I have already been told that if I remove the simm card then EDGE will no longer connect, but this seems like a poor resolution as I then lose the phone functionality of my iphone too!
Is there any definitive way to opt out of EDGE? Will AT&T allow a user to say "block my account from using edge" ? Has anyone done this? I'm sure AT&T must have a way...

I am pretty certain that you can call AT&T and have them remove your iphone data package. This would prevent you from using edge. However, it is also going to kill SMS texting because the two features are built into the packages together. I am basing this on the fact that I have spent upwards of 40 hours on the phone with ATT about my plan over different issues I have had, and during one of those instances, they removed my data package for several days, (supposedly by accident). During that time if I tried to do anything on the net, it would say cannot activate EDGE, you are not subscribed to EDGE.
Call them and have them remove the data if you don't want it.

EDGE or WiFi?

If my iPhone is connected with EDGE and WiFi, but I only have 1 bar of AT&T, but 4 bars for Wifi, of perhaps 5 bars of AT&T but only 1 bar of WiFi, will it recognize the stronger connection and use that one? because I have recently noticed that when I am in my house, i get full WiFi from my router but 0 AT&T bars, yet my Internet if SOOOOO slow, sometimes it even says it can't load. Any ideas?

Even when connected via Wi-Fi, EDGE is always available in the background as long as your iPhone as reception. Visual voicemail messages are downloaded to the iPhone via the EDGE network only even when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
If Wi-Fi access is enabled, the iPhone will attempt a connection to an available Wi-Fi network first or connect to an available Wi-Fi network the iPhone has previously connected to which is stored in the iPhone Wi-Fi network settings and remain connected to the Wi-Fi network connected to (unless disconnected from the Wi-Fi network) before connecting via EDGE.

Is there is signal booster I can use to get better reception for 3G on my ipad? My reception is between 1 (which doesn't work) and 3 bars and it never reverts to Edge. Thanks

Hi, I'm new to this new format for the forum so I may make lots of errors.
My 3G IPAD only gets between 1 and 3 bars when I use 3G at home which is a lot. When its at 1, I can't use my IPAD online at all. I have the original IPAD, 16G, with 3G. My operating system is 4.3.5.
I called Apple support and they connected me to ATT and they didn't know what the problem was. I told them it didn't revert to Edge and they said that's because it can't find the signal. They said I could get a new SIMS card if it didn't work in town but yesterday I took it to town and it got between 3 and 5 bars so I didn't pick up the SIMS card yet.
So I was wondering if anyone knew of a signal booster that will increase the 3G signal so at least it stays off of 1 where I can't use it. I use this mostly at home because my internet connection keeps dropping too so I rely on my 3G 50 percent of the time.
Or does anyone have any other ideas?

Hi, I just watched the video for the Microcell and you have to use your broadband connection to get it to work and the problem is my broadband connection is down the times I'm using my 3G. That's why I use it, because my broadband connection is not working so much of the time.
Any other suggestions? :-)

I had this problem too and solved it by doing a clean install. After that it was gone.
This is a drastic method since it takes quite some time to reinstall lion and all your software.
Thoughts I had why it started working after a clean install are the following:
It looked like the airport wasn't able to reconnect fast enough before the connection timed out. So what could have prevented my mac from being able to connect fast enough?
Apps that consume processor cycles. I love what I would call 'System Enhancers', little apps that enhance my workflow (Moom, Alfred, Dropbox, Default Folder etc). I'm not saying that these are the problem, they might be programmed processor friendly, but check if you have apps that consume processor cylcles. It might prevent airport from being able to reconnect quickly enough before it times out.
Mobile Config profiles. Another thought I had was that I had a mobile config 802.1X profile installed for the company were I worked. It used TTLS to connect to the corporate network. This profile might have gotten in the way.
And a sidenote...
Routers with hardware acceleration might also be a problem. My router is a Wireless Gigabit Router 300N WL-351 and has hardware acceleration. As soon as I activate that my wifi connection keeps dropping. It is as if a Macbook Air can't handle that amount of optimisation.

Disconnect from WiFi Button in Yosemite (Faster File Transfers via Airdrop)

Hi all! Just thought I'd share a great new pro-tip I found that's pretty handy.
Sometimes file transfers through a complex or busy network with a (think hotel lobby or coffee shop), Airdrop file transfers can run extremely slow vs. it going from computer to computer via no network (Ad Hoc). I was determined to find a work around for disconnecting from a WiFi network without turning off Wifi.
Anyways, Yosemite introduced a much asked for feature - The disconnect from WiFi button! Just hold down option while you select the WiFi indicator on the menu bar and click disconnect! Your WiFi will continue to be on and it simply won't connect to that network again. If you now search for other computers in AirDrop, it will find them and be a much faster computer to computer connection.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Test Markup in Mail using the iCloud account.
Continue testing to see what works in the new User.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.
Finder - my iMac name is - iMacs iMac. All of a sudden it become iMacs iMac (2) and latter iMacs iMac (6). What are these numbers ?
In System Preferences > Sharing you can see name. When Finder adds a number it indicates it's seeing another drive with the same name. You can select to rename but this could also be an indication of issues at the base level.
Do you have an external drive that could be used to clone your drive in case you need to do a clean install?

IPhone 5 no internet connection away from WIFI

I have no Internet connection away from WiFi while using 3G on my iPhone 5. This didn't use to be a problem. I now get the message <your phone is not connected to the Internet.>
I have data roaming/ cellular data enabled. Can anyone offer help as I may have changed a setting somewhere without knowing?

Have you recently changed your SIM card to that of another provider? If so, you may need to set your APN settings - Settings/Mobile/Mobile Data Network (on UK phones). If not, then seek advice from your service provider because it's very likely to be connected with your APN settings.
The other option is to search the Internet for the APN settings for your service provider. The information should be readily available.

My iPad mini connects to wifi and works fine till the time I browse on it continuously. However once I type long messages or leave it alone without browsing it gets disconnected from wifi...looks like a bug because it again starts to work sometimes when I switch on or off wifi button.

Apple guys are deleting posts. I have found my posts have been deleted. Apple should MUST let us downgrade at least to previous release from current which was working fine.

This may sound silly but try your date a time setting my ipod had the same problem and i had even checked the the date and time went all the way to the apple store for help and the genius guy just rest the date and time and it worked just fine.

More than 50 MB sized applications are grayed out with status of "Waiting/Installing", when we update those apps from WiFi Connection?

It's happening only for more than 50 MB sized applications. Unable to install those application through WiFi, However, it's successfully installed through MacBook Pro iTunes application. Please suggest me, why this happening suddenly.

Re-check your deployment, specially the user experience:
If you've checked the box next to "Software installation", it will install after the deadline has passed and ignores maintenance windows. Change the deployment to required and uncheck that box and the software should be installed according to your
maintenance windows.

How do I transfer and download OS X Lion from wife's Mac to my Mac? Also, is this allowed ( I believe one or more additional downloads are allowed in house?
Should I just spend the $30 and have my own OS?

If you and your wife are using the same App Store account, you should be able to re-download the Lion installer on your computer from the App Store.
No need to buy it again.

MacBook Pro disconnects from wifi and tells me that my password is incorrect

recently my MacBook Pro disconnects from wifi and when I try to reconnect it says invalid password. I know the password is correct and the network is the right one. I usually just spam the sender key and eventually it connects. but 10 minutes later it will disconnect again and the whole process starts again

Which password, the one for your router, or the one for your email account?
