Review for HP Pavilion DV5

This is my review based on my experiences that i have had with my DV5. I would like to start off by stating DO NOT PURCHASE THIS LAPTOP or any laptop as a matter of fact in the Pavilion line-up. When i first purchased this laptop from future shop in 2009 i felt it was a great investment expecially with its convincing 2.0ghz centrino processor and 4gb of DDR2 system memory and only $499 price tag plus 13% tax. But much to my demise HP at the time did not state on the product description what the graphics card was, and it wasn't until i brought it home that i realized it was one of the worst graphics cards ever made.
Although the graphics card was a dissapointment, i didn't feel like that was much of a deal breaker at the time. But after of about a year of very light use i started relized some issues with it such as i started getting a notice screen everytime i turn on the laptop stating that the battery has been "damaged" and needs to be replaced. Also i noticed that the screen began to flicker at random moments. So at this point i phoned HP customer service asking what had went wrong with my computer, HUGE MISTAKE. HP has the worst cumtomer service i have ever seen. What their problem was that they refised to admit that they screwed up on the hinge design by going the cheap and simple way of using 1 hinge instead of 2 therefore snagging this crutial wire connecting the monitor in the bottom of the hinge right next to the extreamly hot exhaust fan. And they refused to replace my monitor for free and wanted over $300 to replaced as they stated that it wasn't design issue as it was more my problem of overusing the laptop. I felt this was a natrosity as it seemed to them as if because i was using my laptop of only 1 year it caused the wire to break. I had later stated to them that i have a laptop by Acer that i have owned for nearly 5 years of very heavy usage but i wasnt noticing any problems at all with the monitor.
A few other problems that i have noticed at this laptop now ages to 3 years are the fan is now very loud, everything overheats very easily, the side pannels begin to fall off, and the screen flicker continues to get worse. These problems of which i have not yet to notice on my Acer laptop as i have now owned it for 8 years.
In conclusion i would not reccomend you purchase this laptop or any products from HP.

I have to concur with your assertion.  I have recently purchased a Dm4 for home usage.  Unfortunately, after 5 months of usages, the screen will go black when I'm using the laptop from time to time.  I don't know why.  But, it does.  I have spoken to the support center on many occassions.  Yet, after sending back the laptop for repairs (2x), the laptop still has the same "black out of screen" problem.
I am decidingly regretful of my purchase.  And, HP is just plain horrible / inept at handling this entire situation.

Having trouble locating part needed for HP Pavilion dv5  :
Zero insertion force (ZIF) connector clip which holds the keyboard ribbon cable in the slot located on motherboard. It holds pressure down on the ribbon allowing the keyboard to function. I cannot find this part anywhere and most used computers already have them removed.
Anyone out there know where I can obtain one or more of these clips?
    Thanks

HP does not sell this part separate from the motherboard, not sure where you can get one, maybe from a donar notebook someone is scrapping out. Inquire at some local notebook repair shops in your area.

What memory modules can we use for RAM upgrade of HP Pavilion dv5-1198de??
    Max RAM?  Vista?  Windows 7?

I can't find a dv5-1198de but I did find a dv5-1198er which should be similiar. It states up to 8 gb of ram. HERE
I would try www.Crucial.com for suggested memory ,you can use their Scanner Tool to let it detect what you have and what you can upgrade/replace with.

Hi, I don't find in upgrade services hp, a opcion for my operation system windows 8.1 Pro 64 bits. And Now? Help-me Please!! I Need Update the Bios of my HP Pavilion DV5-1235dx.

What is happening or not happening with Windows 8.1 that you think a BIOS update would help? The latest BIOS is F.21 and HP has not issued any Windows 8/8.1 support for that model, which was originally a Vista machine.

  • Recovery Does Not Reinstall Windows on HP Pavilion dv5-1127cl

    Hello,
Recently, I tried to do a factory reset of my laptop. I used the recovery partition by pressing F11. It ran through reinstalling all of the HP software but then would randomly shut off when trying to reinstall windows. I tried the recovery process over and over again and got the same result. The recovery discs are not available for my computer as well.
My product name and number: HP Pavilion dv5-1127cl
    Operating System: Windows Vista 64-bit
Error Message: Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation.
Any input on this would be good, I have been very frustrated trying to get this to work. You wouldn't think your recovery would fail, seems to be a very important option to the computer!

  • Pavilion dv5 2035dx - reinstalling after replacing hard drive

My hard drive in my Pavilion dv5 2035dx failed -every test imaginable and I could not get Windos 7 to load.  I purchased a replacement drive that is an exact dupilcate of the original Toshoba 500 and installed in my laptop.  I was not too concerned since I had created my backup disks and had them in my possession.
Well I put the system repair/boot disk in and everything went alon fine, until I was asked to put in my other disks. None of the other disks seem to have the information my notebook is looking for and I can not install the drivers or get the machine up and running. I've checked the HP website and can nt find a recovery kit.
I was unable to get to Windows on the old defective drive to and since I have replaced the drive, there is no restore poit to look for so I have to reinstall back to the day of purchase.  I need help, any suggestions on getting my notebook up and running again.

If in the USA, please see Windows 7 64b + Supp 3 Recovery Kit to purchase the HP Recovery Media for your computer. If elsewhere in the world, please contact official HP Customer Support, via the HP Worldwide Support Portal, to see if HP recovery Media is available for your model.

  • HP won't replace Pavilion DV5 AC adapter despite a ridiculously short lifespan

    Dear HP
I am writing this letter out of bewildered frustration with HP's tech support.  I bought an HP Pavilion DV5 in the summer of 2008, and by April 2009 my AC power adapter failed.  It started beeping, and didn't charge my laptop battery (the same symptom experienced by multiple others, if you do a search on google).  At the time, I phoned HP and because my laptop was under warranty they sent me a replacement for free.  I was irritated at the shoddy quality of a power adapter that lasts less than a year, but I was satisfied with their quick handling of the situation.
Fast forward to today.  My replacement power adapter (the one they sent last April) has started exhibiting exactly the same symptoms (i.e. beeps/buzzes when you plug it in, and it doesn't charge the laptop).  Just to make sure it wasn't my laptop, I borrowed a friend's charger and sure enough it works just fine on my computer.
I phoned HP tech support and talked to a very curteous person whose name I can't recall.  After collecting my information, he informed me that it would be a ~$90 charge to replace the adapter.  I explained that I felt this was unacceptable, because in addition to the downtime of not being able to use my computer without a power adapter, they were charging me for a part that failed way earlier than it should.  An AC adapter should last a long long time.  It is a very simple component where few things can go wrong.  Plenty of people I know with other brands of computer have had AC adapters last more than five years with no problems.  This repeated failure of HP adapters is a uniquely HP problem, and should be rectified with replacement parts to consumers.
I spoke to Gilles, the tech support supervisor, and he explained that he couldn't do anything but offer the part at full charge because of the constraints of HP's policy (i.e. it's out of warranty so I'm out of luck).  It turns out that HP uses a third party contractor to handle the phone work, so I asked to be transferred to someone at the HP office who would have more power and ability to handle the situation.
I ended up speaking with David at HP's Canadian head office.  He gave me the same line; the laptop is out of warranty so I'm out of luck on a no-charge or even reduced-charge replacement, and that just because the adapter didn't last as long as "I feel it should," that's not enough reason to provide a replacement without charging me full price.
This whole situation is absolutely ludicrous.  AC adapters that are well built do not last less than a year.  As a customer who has bought HP products for a long time, all it would have taken to reduce my frustration would have been to offer me a replacement adapter.  I understand the conditions of the warranty, but I don't understand HP's response to this.  I will not ever buy another HP product, nor will I ever recommend anyone buy an HP product, unless this adapter is replaced at no charge.  It is absolutely unacceptable for the company to manufacture shoddy parts and then pass the results of that shoddiness onto the customer.
I am still amenable to resolving this issue.  I have sent a version of this post to HP's general support email, but I wanted to put this out there publically as well so HP can step up and show everyone they stand by their products.  If HP stands by their products, they will send the replacement.  If not, then it speaks volumes about their practices.

Sorry but this statement is flat out not true, This repeated failure of HP adapters is a uniquely HP problem, and should be rectified with replacement parts to consumers.
as you mentioned, do a google search for yourself and youll find coutless axamples such as this....
    Adapter Power Cord Plug Failure
I'm coming up on my second anniversary owning a Satellite P105, and although I am very happy overall with the laptop I'm having one problem that is frankly getting quite old. During the 2 years I have had to replace the adapter power supply 3x due to faulty cord plugs. These plugs are straight and just don't survive. Tonight I noticed that my laptop wasn't charging and now I'm forced to find yet another one. I've spent about $150 so far on power cords and I'm getting tired of it.
For what it's worth the unit never leaves the living room and the unit is in excellent condition. I'm not throwing it around in my bag the way I am with this IBM stinkpad I'm typing this on.
So Im sorry but I dont feel your pain. Its been a year since you got the free one, get one cheap on ebay and move on with you life.

  • Pavilion dv5-1151 not starting.

Got a HP Pavilion dv5. It is about 5 years old.
Last Tuesday the AC Adapter started to heat more than usual. At first the laptop turned off and I waited for the AC Adapter to cool down and retry it and it worked. After reusing the laptop for another 30 minutes, the AC Adapter went very hot again and a small bang sound went from it (it died).
I got a new universal AC Adapter but the laptop won't start.
Symptoms:When I plug the new AC Adapter into the power jack, the light near the power jack turns on like it did with the old one, when I press the power button to turn it ON, nothing happens. My battery is long time dead but I tried it anyway. With battery and AC Adapter the light in front of the laptop (front left) is on, showing that the battery charges but when I press the power button to turn the laptop ON, that light shuts down and nothing happens.
    Any ideas?

You could probably use the dv5-2134nr without an issue. I'd really recommend you just call HP to order the factory restore discs.

    Hi,
You can only recover files/data have not be overwritten. Normally you have to pay for a software such as Getdata or service to recover data/files but there are some free products:

  • I have a HP Pavilion DV5 1251nr that won't boot up.

I have a HP Pavilion DV5 1251nr that won't boot up. The light at the power connector comes on nothing happen

First thing to try is a hard reset. Remove the battery and power supply. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Wait another 30 seconds. Now plug in the power supply. Then try to start the computer. Let us know if that works. If not, we need to start thinking about hardware issues.
