Revisit SSDs instead of platter drives

The knock on SSDs has been the high cost per GB compared to platter drives.  But SSDs have come down considerably in price.  And for users who might not need the space of a platter drive, I wonder now if SSDs are more of a valid option to replace some if not all platter drives?  I have a couple of Samsung 830 256gb SSDs I picked up for $155 each.  I also have a Samsung 830 128gb SSD - got it for $70.
I already swapped one of the 256gb SSDs into my video editing rig - it replaces the 325gb platter boot/app drive.  I am liking how it makes the PC feel snappier.  The other 256gb and 128gb SSDs were intended for installation in my other PCs.  But now I am wondering - maybe I should use one or both in some configuration in my video editing rig?  For example, what about this?:
A) Keep the already installed 256gb SSD to hold the OS, applications, but also have it hold the Windows swap file along with the Adobe/After Effects scratch/working files.  I cut down the size of Win 7 to around 11gb.  And even with Adobe CS5 and some other apps installed, the SSD still has approx 180gb of free space left.  An SSD is not like a platter drive in terms of access, so why not take advantage of the 180gb unused space and speed of the SSD for swap/scratch files?  Wouldn't that be faster than a single platter drive?
B) Then install the other 256gb SSD to hold the media I am working on.  I am not a professional who has huge amounts of media/footage files.  So I think a 256gb SSD is fine to hold the footage that is being used for editing.  Later I would archive footage off of the SSD anyway - after completing a project.  So, I could take advantage of the fast read of the media/footage files when they are needed for editing/effects work, which again would be faster than a single platter drive that is having to seek for source footage during the editing/effects work.  And the swap/scratch files would be on the non-footage drive, and so would not reduce speed when reading of footage is required at the same time as writing to page/scratch files.
Would not the above setup provide for a fast and snappy editing/effects work experience compared to non-raid platter drives?  If the size is sufficient for my use, does it really matter if I could have 1TB of additional space with a platter drive - if I would never use that extra space?  (Keep in mind additional platter drives and raid is not a free lunch either - there is cost involved compared to single platter drives.)
The one area I am not so concerned about is render speed.  As a non-professional, I am fine if rendering takes some extra time, and I can go get a coffee or work on something else while waiting, compared to a professional who is on a deadline.  So I might use one of my 500gb or 1TB platter drives to hold any rendered output.
Am I way off base with my proposed two 256gb SSD Premiere/After Effects setup?  Would including that additional 3rd 128gb SSD in the mix provide any advantage, in terms of shuffling where I would place the OS/apps/swap/scratch files?  Or perhaps there is some space issue I am not aware of that would necessitate use of larger platter drives?  Thanks for any ideas.

Agreed, it very much depends on the user needs.  For example, I took 10 days of video footage on vacation in Hawaii - 720p at 60fps.  The sum size of that footage is 20gb.  So it would fit no problem on the 256gb SSD.  I could fit several other vacation footages as well, along with some of my animation project footages, on the 256gb SSD.  I could be working several of these projects at once if needed.  (Although I would eventually move footage to disk backup storage on a server anyway, so it wouldn't need to clutter up the SSD forever.)
So for my usage, terabytes of platter drive arrays for footage is probably not needed.  Why not take advantage of fast access times of the SSD for reading footage.  Isn't that what folks are doing when they RAID 0 platter drives to hold footage - trying to improve the read speeds for performance?  In the past, with SSDs in the $300+ range - might not have made sense to go SSD.  But with fast 256gb SSDs going for $150 or lower, if you don't need the platter space, seems like you can get a nice performance boost using an SSD - without having to resort to raid arrays of platter drives.  I might give it a try and see how it goes.

  • Can I bootcamp Windows on SSD instead of Fusion Drive?

    Hi guys,
I have a base retina iMac which I have boot camp Windows 8.1 on it. However, I would like to know if I can improve the performance of Windows 8.1, like installing Windows 8.1 on SSD part instead of HDD?
If not, how can I improve the performance of windows 8 on fusion drive?
    thanks

  • 1TB seagate hard drive replacement - SSD instead?

My 2009 27" iMac qualifies for the hard drive replacement programme, as I received the email from Apple and checked using their serial number submission page that mine does indeed qualify.
I was already considering upgrading to an SSD, so now I have questions...
Can I pay extra to have them fit an Apple certified SSD instead of the 1TB replacement drive?
Can I pay extra and have them replace the 1TB but also fit an Apple certified SSD as the boot drive, giving me a second internal hard drive which is the replaced 1TB hard drive?  I was going to open up my iMac to see if the bracket and connections are there for a second hard drive, I have heard that they may not be present and that you also have to get a special hard drive (with an Apple factory-fitted temperature sensor) for some models, not sure if mine would be one of those models.  If I ask Apple, they might do the fitting for free at least.
I have Lion currently installed, I have Mountain Lion too (which I got with my MacBook Pro).  They are on USB flash drives.  If I decide to send my iMac for the replacement, should I install the original OS that the iMac came with or Mountain Lion?
What liability do Apple or an authorised service centre have as far as damage to my iMac goes?  We all know that these models had a problem with the screen backing causing a shadow, mine is not so bad but it is obviously there if I fill the screen with grey.  If they make this worse, can I take it back and demand that they fix it?  Will they be able to fix this at the same time that they replace the hard drive?  It is something I was going to look at doing myself - try to secure the screen backing, after the standard two year warranty had expired (EU), which I think it now has.  What if they scratch the casing or something else like that?  I keep all of my Apple products in pristine condition, I will notice any scratches and be deeply annoyed by them.
With all of this in mind, I'm half-tempted to just ignore the recall and do the SSD upgrade myself, try to fix the screen backing at the same time, what do you people think?  The nearest Apple Store to me is over 100 miles away, I would have to go to a local authorised reseller / service shop.  I should probably give them a call and ask a few of my questions to them, but wanted to get an idea of what you guys knew or thought too.

I'm pretty sure that Apple will not authorize any work other than replacing the 1 TB Seagate drive. You will not be able to pay extra for any additional work. Your choses are to have the drive replaced under the terms of the replacement program or pay out of pocket for the work you want to have done.  I had my Seagate 1TB drive replaced on site by calling AppleCare.

  • Non-System Raid SSD recognized as Hard Drive instead of Solid State Drive unit in Windows 2012 R2

    Hello,
We have a Raid 10 of 4 SSD in LSI hardware Raid card.
In Windows 2012 R2 the disk is detected as HDD.
Is there any way to set in Windows that disk as SSD instead o Hard disk drive?
Searching I saw that win 8.1 users solve that instaling and runing "WinSAT diskformal" but that don't work in win server because the SSD raid is a non-system one.
    http://www.win-raid.com/t70f34-Detection-of-SSDs-by-Win-and-the-use-of-the-Optimizer-former-Defrag-Tool.html
         Thanks.

    festuc,
I'm having the same problem as you at the moment with a new server install. I've the latest drivers/firmware, but can't seem to get 2012 to recognize the RAID as an SSD. What's even more boggling, I've essentially cloned this server from another (both on
the hardware and software side) and one actually recognizes it correctly!
To provide some key bits of information:
    1) The RAID control in question is Marvel based-- using SuperMicro MoBo with Intel Raid (had problems getting their Adaptec controller-- no SSDs would  be recognized at all).
    2) I installed the 2012 on the raided SSDs in question.
    3) I did install the correct driver prior to the OS installation.
    3) Post OS installation, TRIM is reportedly up (fsutil etc...)
    4) However, when checking disk optimzation, it is clearly labeled as a HardDisk and optimization does NOT trim.
As I said before, this is working correctly on a separate server with the exact same setup. I'm absolutely stumped at the moment since I've essentially tried everything I could come up with. Reinstalling drivers, rolling back, alternate manufacturer drivers
(for the heck of it), etc... all dead ends.
Here's hoping you or some other saint on here will over some much needed insight to get this sorted out.

  • I am installing an SSD in the Optical Dirve of my MacBook Pro 2012 and was wondering how to change the start up disk to the new SSD instead of the HDD and when i do it will it install Yosemite on the SSD?

Im planning on taking out the optical drive on my mid 2012 Macbook Pro and putting in an SSD instead so i can boot OS X and my applications from it. Im just wondering how do i get it to boot the OS from the new drive, also will it install Yosemite on the SSD and will any of my data on the HDD be deleted?

connecting MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) to Hisense TV with audio?!?!!?
    hello everyone.
if anyone is familar with successfully getting the older macbook pros that dont support audio out to stream and preform digital audio on a TV or has any helpful information that will get me familiar with trying to successfully stream audio and visual. and can PLEASE HELP ME in any way to understand what they know and teach me how to solve my problem id really appreciate it.
i want to connect my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) to my Hisense LED LCD TV, ModelNumber:40H3E  and getting digital audio sound from my TV as well as video, but have no clue on how or where to even start to successfully pairing the two and getting sound.
I own a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) this MacBook model doesnt support an HDMI port. My MacBooks model has the Mini Displayport which supports video out but does not support audio out. Can someone help me by telling me exactly which Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with audio will support my model MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and exactly what HDMI wire do i need to buy that will successfully preform digital audio and sadisfying quality visual through TV?

  • What size SSD? Swapping Optical Drive for gen. storage.

I'm planning on buying a smaller SSD and was looking for suggestions on the best size to buy. I have a 13" Late 2011 Macbook Pro, i5. 8gb RAM. 500gb HDD.
What I'm doing is replacing my 500gb HDD and moving that to my optical bay just for general storage. I'm going to set up my new SSD as the boot drive. I want to boost my performance for as little money as possible. I know that I can put 16gb RAM in and get significant improvement, but really want to get rid of the HDD as the boot drive. I'm leaning toward getting either the 44gb or 60gb Mercury Electra 6G SSD.
Any suggestions on what size would be best for what I want or any other suggestions are welcome.

I suggest that you get at least a 240 GB SSD. SATA3, of course!
Larger SSDs are generally much faster, and the price is now dropping (to the point that I have just purchased an 1Tb Crucial M500 SSD for less than 400 €). The price difference between a 64 GB SSD and a 240 GB SSD is now minimal, and you will enjoy more space!
Two years ago, as soon as I purchased my late-2011 MBP, I immediately did the same, moving the original 750Gb HD to the optical bay, and installing a 240Gb Vertex-2 SSD in the main bay as system disk.
The space was just enough, as I have Bootcamp and Windows 7, too, so I divided it half-and-half, and a 128Gb storage is just barely enough for either OSX and Wndows-7 64 bits Pro...
You could survive with a 128 GB SSD if you do not need Bootcamp. Indeed, I always recommend to install Bootcamp and Windows 7 to all Mac owners, so you get the best of the two worlds. I love OSX, but for certain tasks Windows is still vastly superior (using Autocad, for example)...
Curiously, instead, I prefer OSX for Office...

  • SSD for applications, hybrid drive for data? easy to do?

I'm thinking to order iMac with 256gb SSD instead of the fusion as the fusion HDD part will be 5400rpm
Is it easy to have an Imac with apps on SSD and seperate data on an external hybrid?
How do I make SSD default for apps and external hybrid for Data, is there any guides how to do this?
    What should I do?

Get the fusion drive. To use a fast external drive it will have to be Thunderbolt, and the enclosures are quite expensive just to end up with something that isn't likely that much faster than the fusion drive.

  • Lenovo Y50 - Can the SSD part of Hybrid Drive be turned off?

I have a Y50 with a 1TB HDD + 8GB SSD Hybrid drive.I have heard and sometimes experienced in some games that the SSD part of the drive sometimes act as a hindrance to smooth perfomance. Can anyone tell me on a way to turn the SSD part off?

None of these replies addressed the reason for my original question.
I do appreciate the answers however I see I should have been a bit more thorough in my query.
I know how the fusion works.  I know you can get a 1 tb ssd with the imac.
I also know that it is very very expensive to get a pure pcie 1 tb ssd as an option.
The reason for my question is to see if the sata ssd which is a little slower and also much much cheaper than pcie flash ssds can be used instead of the slow
hdd in the fusion configuration.  I have ordered the 512 gb pcie flash for my imac so I am committed to pure ssd.  I would still like to know if
what I mentioned is possible as a much less expensive option.
Sorry for the confusion but in a rather lengthy search throughout the net and asking Apple's Geniuses I have been as yet unable to get any answer.
It would seem to me that using a sata ssd instead of a sata hdd would be nothing but beneficial in the fusion setup.

  • Boot Camp sees my internal SSD as an external drive - can't install Windows 7

I've just replaced my old 1TB drive on my Mac Pro (mid 2010) with a 1TB Samsung 840 EVO. To get the best speed I've installed it using the Sonnet Tempo PCIe interface. I performed a fresh install of Mavericks 10.9.1 and the system absolutely flies.
However, I wanted to also install Windows 7 but Boot Camp Assistant will not allow me to do this. It warns....
You cannot partition an external disk, a RAID disk or an internal disk on which FileVault encryption is in progress.
When I look through the system information, my SSD is reported as an external drive - which is why I guess BCA refuses to partition it (and ghosts out the option to install Windows 7 or later version.
Here's the system information under storage...
    MAC SSD:
      Available:          941.47 GB (941,471,612,928 bytes)
      Capacity:          999.35 GB (999,345,127,424 bytes)
      Mount Point:          /
      File System:          Journaled HFS+
      Writable:          Yes
      Ignore Ownership:          No
      BSD Name:          disk0s2
      Volume UUID:          DED0438B-7A12-3AB0-8E6D-E6911C595CA2
      Physical Drive:
Media Name:          Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB Media
      Medium Type:          SSD
      Protocol:          SATA
      Internal:          No
Partition Map Type:          GPT (GUID Partition Table)
      S.M.A.R.T. Status:          Verified
So my questions are... Why does OSX identify it as an external drive? Is it because of the PCIe interface? And, more importantly, how can I get around this to allow me to install Windows 7? Could I temporarily remove the PCIe card and install the SSD in a standard drive bay and then run BCA? Any ideas???
    Thanks.

Kappy is dead on with 1 more tweak ... remove the PCI card, and put the SSD back onto a normal drive bay and fully install Windows.
Then, put the empty PCI card back into the machine and boot into both OSX and Windows ... both OSs should work just fine.
Now, put the SSD onto the PCI sled and test both OSs.

  • Can I install a SSD on an optical drive in a HP Envy Phoenix

I just purchased a customized HP ENVY Phoenix Desktop - 810-350se CTO with a Raid 5 configuration (3 x 2 TB), but I noticed and researched that it seems that is better to have a SSD installed to have your computer access data faster, of course, I want to use it for the OS installed on it.  So I have two questions?
1.) Can I change the configuration so I can add an SSD on a optical drive? (This will be the 4th drive). Since I am already using 3 HDD on a Raid 5 configuration and there wouldn't be any more space left, I am assuming that I can only use an empty optical drive space and install an SSD?
2.) Is there a limitation of how many drives and capacity HDD can be installed on the motherboard?
My proposed solution is to keep the 3 HDD and install a  4th drive (SSD) on the optical drive and use it for the OS (Windows 8.1).
Any suggestions and/or recommendations is highly appreciated it.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Your PC is already using a Windows 8 boot loader and if you load the SSD in UEFI mode then you will add another Windows 8 boot loader to the eligible boot device menu.  This will lead to confusion.  I would suggest that you avoid this situation by trying the following procedure:
Be sure to create the external HP recovery media
Install the SSD on port 1 or 2
Disable secure boot in the BIOS and switch to legacy mode
Boot into the Intel OPROM and rebuild the RAID 5 array
Boot back into the BIOS and enable UEFI mode
Boot the external HP recover media and load the SSD (SSD recommended size is 240 GB or larger)
Once you are up and running then go into Disk Management and format the RAID array as GPT
The above procedure may or may not work but it's what I would first try.

  • Best system and file set up for SSD + HDD in optical drive

I have finally pulled the trigger and purchased a Samsung 512GB 840 pro SSD for the main bay in my late 2011 Macbook Pro and a iTB SATA 2 HDD with Data Doubler from OWC to replace my optical drive. My question is what is the best way to set these up after I have installed them?I am an audio engineer and I do a lot of multi channel audio editing with large files and want the SSD for the speed for my editing. Do I set these up as separate drives or do I RAID ( if that is possible)? Do I have my System software and programs on the SSD and use the HDD as my scratch drive? I don't have access to a Mac Mini, so can't create a fusion drive. Appreciate the advise.

Put the SSD in the main drive bay and the rotating HDD in the Optical bay. Use either Disk Utility or one of the Cloning software programs to Restore or Clone your current install from the HDD to the SSD.
Or Make a Time Machine Backup of the current install and then use the Recovery HD system to Restore that TM backup to the SSD.
Or you can do a Clean install of OS X on the SSD then reinstall all your programs and then copy over all your files from the HDD to the SSD.
Many ways to do what you want. You just have to pick the one you want to use.
Yes all files on every drive connected to your Mac in any way, internally or by an external port, will be seens by Finder.

hello everyone. I have recently installed a Samsung SSD (solid state hard drive) into my destop PC. For some reason Lightroom does not see it ? So i cannot ingest photos from it, or copy photos from a card to it. It is not listed as a drive option. LR sees every other drive. My computer sees it fine, so i was able to create a catalogue there. Im running windows 8.1. Any ideas ? I will also add that this drive became corrupt and was repaired by Samsung. Maybe they didn't do a very good job.. ..

Yes pretty much that, but to clarify sorry
    Opened Lightroom.
    Create new catalogue.
This opened the Windows 8 file explorer window and Windows recognises the drive. So I was able to create a catalogue there and save.
I then inserted my memory card into my card reader which LR recognised. I selected it, chose all the photos within and then navigated to the right side of the Lr import dialogue window to locate this problem drive as on this occasion i want the RAW files on the same drive as the lrcat. However all my other drives are listed but not this Samsung SSD.
In addition this Samsung SSD is not listed a drive to import from in the same dialogue window.

Everything works file if use the following url in ifsDefault.properties file

My question is it ok to use thin driver instead of oci driver for ifs connection. Would it cause any problem when i move my java code to production machine and use the thin driver for ifs connection AW> Unfortunately, the thin driver is not certified. There are performance problems when retrieving large documents across the net, and there have been unconfirmed instability problems.

  • Is there  way to store my movies on my Time Capsule instead of laptop drive? I will then run an external drive to backup Time Capsule.

Is there  way to store and run my iMovies on my Time Capsule instead of laptop drive? I will then run an external drive to backup Time Capsule as my backup.  I want to dothis because my hard drive is full and I still have many movies to import form camcorder.

I do not know about iMovie, but the experts in the iPhoto and Aperture support areas strongly advise against trying to install your "working" image library on the Time Capsule.
You might want to ask about this in the iMovie support area.
    iMovie for Mac
It would be much easier and much better if you use the external drive to connect to your Mac via USB or FireWire and then store the movies there.
Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the external hard drive automatically once you tell it to do so.

  • Configuring SSD as a boot drive

    Hi!
I've finally ordered a six cores Mac Pro and I'm waiting for a SSD from OWC.
I intend to use the SSD as a boot drive so I plan to copy the content of the Mac Pro boot drive with SuperDuper when I'll receive it and restore it to the SSD.
I've read few comments here from users who says that could be a risky operation doing so due to the fact that a SSD doesn't behave as a regular hard disk. I'm a bit skeptical because it is a very common operation to backup and restore a boot drive.
Anyone has used SuperDuper with an SSD ?
    Thanks!

I don;t see why it would be a problem. But then again I'd be more inclined to just re-install using the DVDs that come with your new Mac Pro. After all you have no data to save at this point, so doing a fresh install is just a nice simple process.
    Tom
I'm not familiar with the Mac Pro and the supplied DVD. There is no special driver or configuration specific to the Mac Pro already installed on the HD ? The regular install DVD would do the job ? If so, you're right. It is a lot easier just to reinstall from the DVD.
    Many thanks.
