Revisiting the Helvetica...-83pv-RKSJ-H* font issue

For those of you not familiar with the previous threads on this issue then refer to http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc85cf4/1
I also posted a question in June (here http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5967b/0) but referred to the above at the time.
PROBLEM:
Now it is back, but it occurs when opening CS2 files in CS3!
The previous solution I had was to Quit Illy. Remove the corresponding file in CMAP folder. Launch Illy again. Open the problem file. Quit Illy. Put it back and relaunch.
Sometimes I had to do a Font Finagle as well. No idea why it worked, but I stumbled on it.
Now that doesn't work, so i went a further step.
I opened the .AI file in Textedit. It shows some very interesting info such as paths to placed files and fonts, etc.
I did a search for Helvetica. Then removed the '83pv-RKSJ-H' from each occurrence and resaved the file (make sure you do a Save As... ;-)
Opening it in Illy seems to solve the problem.
This leads me to conclude that the problem occurs first on a machine for some reason and it added to each file opened. Then noone can get rid of it.
BUT, Why oh Why Adobe does it happen in the first place? Please help us.
Thanks by the way.

I found a fix by Mike Gondek.
Remove the HelveLTMM and Helvetica LT MM (multiple master fonts in the Macintosh/System/Library/fonts)
We have recenltly also seen the font Helvetica 90 ms-RKSJ-H appearing..... and.... unfortunately this fix does not have the same results.
What a mess Adobe/Apple/Somebody

  • Helvetica 83pv-RKSJ-H issue

    Hi all,
I know this is a question that's been asked, and for some it's been solved. However, after hours of reading forums and trying everything I've read, I still haven't been able to resolve this font problem. I MAY know what the culprit file is, but unfortunately, it is a file I have to constantly open! Here is my issue:
I use Helvetica in my Illustrator template for my freelance job, so now, hundreds of my files have been infected with this "helvetica 83pv-RKSJ-H" issue. Whenever I open a file that uses Helvetica, it says that helvetica 83pv-RKSJ-H is a missing font and will be substituted.
How can I go about getting rid of this error so that I don't have to fix hundreds of AI files? Also, I've read that people say to disable or remove the MM files, but my computer does not allow me to do this. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
How do I disable/remove them, and will this stop the error from popping up every time I open a file?
I am also having this problem with MYRIAD. (I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I design t-shirts, therefore my files will be sent to printers. For this reason, I must use the default Helvetica, and not a version that the printer may not have). It would be much easier to have a solution that will eliminate the error message from popping up altogether, WITHOUT having to download that "helvetica 83pv-RKSJ-H" font, but I'm not sure if this is possible.
I am using Illustrator CS5 and OSX10.6.7. Thank you.

I outlined fonts that are not default fonts (the fonts used in the actual designs), but not the template, in which I used the default Helvetica. And the reason why I didn't outline the template is because prior to this issue, it was more efficient to not outline since I have multiple revisions to do for files. Often times clients would want their shirt name changed, or the Pantone colors changed, and it was quicker for me to edit the same file rather than saving an outlined and unoutlined file. However, it seems like that's what I'm going to have to do for now until I find a fix.
Yes, I am on an admin account. I'm not even sure what font I'm looking for. I've looked in the systems/library/fonts, user/USID/library/fonts/, and HD/Library/fonts, and have only found it in the systems folder. Again, I am unable to remove it, and if I open FontBook, I can't find the HelveLTMM or Helvetica LT MM fonts to disable. Tips?
(By the way, when I say I am unable to remove it, I mean that I can move it out of the folder and into the Trash, but cannot empty Trash. It says it is in use even though I have no programs open. But even when I move it out of the system's fonts folder, I still get the error.)
(More info [sorry for all the sidenotes]: Files that were created prior to this issue are also corrupted now. When I opened them while the "corrupt" file was open [before I knew which file was the culprit], they got "infected" with the non-existing Helvetica. I'm afraid that since I saved those files without knowing they were infected, my AI will continue to have that issue until all files are resolved, which is why I'm trying to find a way to completely wipe out whatever it is that is causing this so that that error won't pop up anymore, and my files won't look for a Helvetica I don't have, even though I had originally used my own default, working version. Not sure if any of that makes sense...this is all really confusing for me)

  • CS4 Helvetica-83pv-rksj-h*

Is anyone having issues with Helvetica-83pv-rksj-h* in illustrator CS4?
Is this a legacy font that CS4 does not recognize?
What can be done to get this font to load or what is the substitute?

Do not believe I have seen a MM verison of Gotham. Here is a list of the MM fonts incase you have any of those. http://helpx.adobe.com/legacy/kb/multiple-master-fonts-general-information.html
    I would try font nuke:
    http://jamapi.com/pr/fn/
Here is a screenshot, incase this helps decipher which version of Gotham opentype you have. If you have any type 1 versions of Gotham, and you are having trouble, would susbstitue all opentype equivalents.

  • Helvetica 90ms-RKSJ-H infecting our Illustrator files

I am working in CS3 on OS 10.4.11, but we also use CS2 on some of our Macs with 10.3.9.  We do not use Font Utility programs. We mantain an organized font library and only load our licensed Postscript versions of fonts into our main Library Fonts folder.
We are receiving files with Helvetica 90ms-RKSJ-H where it should be Helvetica Medium. Such files appear to have Helvetica 90ms-RKSJ-H in the Illustrator font menu in addition to Helvetica even though the font does not exist in our library.  The only way we have found to rid our files of this font is to replace it with anything but Helvetica Medium, save, quit Illustrator, reopen and then replace with the true Postscript version of Helvetica Medium. If we open a file with the Helvetica 90ms-RKSJ-H and then open an accurate file it will look like it has the wrong Helvetica. If we save, that file while it looks wrong it will become wrong.
Another good description of this problem can be found here: http://adobe.groupbrowser.com/archive/t-171734.html but it is from 2007.
I want to know if there is a better solution from what we are doing.  We either need to instruct our outside vendors on the best solution to rid their files of this issue before it gets to us or correct mass quatities of Illustrator files ourselves.
Please let me know what other info that would be helpful to this discussion. Thanks for any insight and info that can be given!

Glad to see there is a Helvetica RKS-J 90ms thread now. I looked into this a little maybe a year ago and had come across a few threads on other cmap issues like this but not much specifically on RKS-J 90ms.
I believe RKS-J 90ms is a Japanese character map (cmap) that is being referenced rather than it being font in itself. There two places it may be--either  in your Adobe or Acrobat folder. It may be under Adobe>Acrobat>Resources>CMap in Windows. Where I work we review localized art files many of which are Japanese. This problem spreads if we open any untainted files while in a session referencing Helvetica RKS-J 90ms. The sheer quantity of files we go through and number of languages we boot into has made starting a fresh session with Illustrator for each new illustration job or document review impossible. I'm sometimes booted into one language for an entire day, but opening other language localized files in Illustrator (can be done in Illustrator, though not FrameMaker hence the booting into Japanese, etc.). Maybe this is a bad idea.
How do others in this thread come across the Japanese cmap? Do you work with Japanese language files? Someone here suggested we use VMWare to boot into Japanese so that we don't keep spreading the infection.
This may be off topic, but we also save down a lot (my group works in CS4). Its usually to CS(1) which causes problems as CS2 had many new tools/techniques (legacy type problems are pre CS1 though). I've suggested we don't save down below CS2 unless completely necessary to exchange a file. Saving down may not be related, but in threads on similar cmap referencing problems, some people claimed to reduce the problems or get rid of them by not saving down. I don't believe this is a solution, but there are so many other problems that can come with saving down to too low a common denominator.
I really hope this thread continues and we can find a permanent solution.
    Thanks

  • Font Issues - slides won't hold formatting

Everytime I open an existing presentation, all fonts on all slides default to Helvetica. I have to "reapply master to slide" for all slides - EVERY TIME I open the document. Not a font issue - it's Arial Bold - and the formatting is correct on the Master, and Keynote is recognizing the font. Why won't my slides hold their formatting?
Also, I get "missing font" when launching app - it says Markerfelt-thin is missing, even though I never had such a crappy looking font. Anyway, installed it - and can now select test and change font to Markerfelt - and it displays fine. Still get the "Missing Font" message anyway. Keynote is clearly recognizing that I have it loaded, why the message?
    Thanks.

I too am having this font issue in Iwork 06, but only on one machine in our office.
Even if we try to change the colour of a word on any presentation that we open on the machine the font changes to Helvetica Condensed Bold. When we turn the font off and we get a message that the font is missing on every slide and the master slide, but it's not anywhere on the slides. We never use this font for presentations.
    It's a pain. Wish I had a solution...really I wish I had one to share.

  • Dr. Damien's Development - The Xylophone Project X - Font Issues and Front Panel Layout

The Show Raw Data button was made active in this installment. Doing this in a robust fashion was more involved than one might think, due to font and platform issues (remember I want to port this to a Windows Mobile device eventually). The following changes were made.
The A frequency indicator was made active. This was an oversight from the last update.
A front panel object, XylophoneFP.lvclass, was created to hold the front panel references and methods.
The front panel object was used to implement the Show Raw Data button.
The front panel object was used to compensate for font issues.
When testing this application on Windows Vista, I noticed that the font differences between Vista and XP were annoying enough that I wanted to fix them. This will also lay the groundwork for any layout issues when porting to Windows Mobile. Usually, I create a cluster containing all my front panel references, but this time I put them into an object. Besides the usual object boilerplate, there are two methods, one to rearrange the front panel and one to show/hide the data graphs.
Once the controls and indicators are properly arranged, showing and hiding the data graphs is simple. VI server methods are used to find the edges of the outer controls, some whitespace is added, then the front panel size is reset. Arranging the controls in the first place is much more complex. Dialog controls are used, and these controls change size based on the default font size. Font sizes can change due to user preference or when using the application in a different operating system than it was developed in. Button sizes can also change due to localization.
This problem is difficult to solve cleanly, and the VI which does this, XylFP.lvlib:XylophoneFP.lvclass:ArrangeControls.vi, shows the problem. It relies on the actual sizes of the controls/indicators to rearrange the front panel in a hopefully pleasing fashion. Even though this is a relatively simple UI, the VI is fairly complex. It uses VI server calls to determine the current sizes of controls and then rearrange them. If you choose to do something similar, consider the following hints:
The Bounds property of all controls is not writable. To change the size of controls, you need to find the property or properties which change the size. There may be more than one (which is why Bounds is not writable). For example, to change the size of a boolean, use the Button Size property.
In many cases, the property you use to change the size of the control will not be the same value as the Bounds property. Using the boolean again, the Bounds of a 3D LED include the 3D effect around the LED, but the Button Size only includes the LED itself. Comparing the Bounds property to the result of a query to the property you will be setting will give you the necessary offset to convert between the two.
Make sure you label your wires if you attempt to do things like this. Long wires are very common in this type of programming. It is difficult enough to keep track of things without the added aggravation of having the trace wires back to their source to identify them.
A few judiciously placed type converters can eliminate many type conversion dots. This is not usually a real problem in this context, but you should get into the habit of efficient programming.

I put the event structure in the command loop so that events are processed synchronously.  In the past, I have run into a variety of race condition/synchronization issues when separating the event and command loops and prefer to keep them together to make the program structure simpler.
It is simpler but you give up any multi CPU performance.  That LV is inherently parallel is one (the only) real advantage over a text based development system.  I can write good structured text that is almost as visually easy to parse as LV.  With modern syntax coloring engines, the difference in icons vs. structured text is not that great.
But the challenge I give the traditional text coders is to keep track of many mulitple threads.  This is why dataflow is a powerful concept.  Yes it does lead to asynchronous execution but if you impose synchronicity on your code you are working against LV.  I get most first time programs where everything is in a sequence structure.  "Just to be safe".
Of course this is much better but  my first design goal is that any application should take advantage of a much hardware as possible, degrade gracefully on slower hardware and play nice with other running applications.  This simpler structure severely handicaps that first goal.
In this case it is simple enough to "get away" with it since as you point out that there should not be anything that takes significant CPU time.   But that may not be true on the PDA?
If you are going to run it on the PDA will we be discussing techniques to seamlessly use both NIDAQmx Base and NIDAQmx in the same system?  That is a real challenge.  I look forward to more of this!
    Cheers!

  • Font with "83pv-RKSJ-H*" will not change

    Hi
I hope someone can help with a really frustrating problem.
We were using Interstate-Regular PostScript Type 1 font for many years when we discovered that quite a few files were displaying the wrong version.
Rather than the CS2 file looking for Interstate Regular it was looking for Interstate-Regular-83pv-RKSJ-H*.
As we use Interstate all the time we switched to OpenType version of family and decided to progressively migrate old files to new version.
However, attempts to update the font in many files does not work. Opening the file and changing "Interstate-Regular-83pv-RKSJ-H*" to the correct font (manually activated in Suitcase) does not work, it just reverts back to the 83pv-RKSJ-H* version.
If I load the font in ~/Library/Fonts and try it then the Regular font just reverts back to 83pv-RKSJ-H*.
Searching the file using TextEdit does not find "83pv-RKSJ-H*" anywhere!!
Any help in this matter would be extremely appreciated.
    Regards
    Craig.

    Craig,
Search the forums for "RKSJ". This should answer you question. Let us know how it goes.

  • Question about the license of the Helvetica fonts that came preinstalled on my OS X Mountain Lion

Hi, I'm a hobby illustrator and I currently work in Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Recently, I've decided that I'm going to switch to Linux Mint for various reasons including a more responsive and customizable system. However, I still want to use some of the fonts that came preinstalled with Mountain Lion, including the Helvetica, Helvetica CY, and Helvetica Neue font families.
Now, as I understand it, the license for the fonts included with Mountain Lion cannot be transferred over if I export one of the fonts from the Font Book app and install it in Linux Mint. My questions are:
    1. Is this true, or does the license remain valid even if I copy the fonts to Linux Mint?
    2. If not, does the license remain valid if I somehow access OS X's fonts from within Linux Mint and use them without copying them over?
    Thanks,
    Emily

Since this is absolutely NOT a forum associated with fonts from vendors other than Adobe, we cannot give you a definitive response to this.
You should consult the EULA (End User License Agreement) for Apple's operating systems and see if they address the issue of the license for the bundled fonts. If there is nothing mentioned there, I suggest you contact Apple directly for their official response to your query.
Generally speaking, I would be amazed if they tell you that once you have a license to any version of MacOS, you have rights to use the bundled fonts on any other platform for the indefinite future.

    Thanks, Rich

In order to be cross platform you must be using the Open Type version of all fonts to cause the least disruption. Macs can read and process the Windows .ttf  type format but PCs can't process Mac formatted type. Most recent versions also cannot use the older PS Type 1 fonts.

After updating to 10.6.3, I installed the 10.6.8 update just to start experiencing these font issues. HELP! How do I get the fonts to display correctly in my browsers especially (Chrome & Safari)

What I ended up having to do was open up the Font book & remove duplicates. I knew it was Arial that was causing the problem, so I deleted the duplicate of that font. Inadvertantly I deleted all the Arial regular font, so I had to reinstall one copy. That was the solution. Thanks!

I installed indesign CS5 on new macbook pro and keeps freezing with spinning wheel once the app opens. Is there an issue with OS Mav or font issue or a plist I can pull. All other Adobe products work.

Migration should never be done with any Adobe program.
If you have done Migration, you have to UNINSTALL first (if even possible) and then download Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and run that also. When this is done, restart your computer and install the programs from an original Adobe Installer.
Other question is, if your OS is supporting that version. You can try it, it is not officially supported, but it might work.
But CC will work, upgrade to CC2014 (without additional cost), use that as it is better anyway.

I am having font issues with font book. It validates the font, yet it is not availabe in my software programs (Adobe  or Microsoft). What can I do to use these fonts?
I actually created these fonts with fontagrapher in 1998 and have been using them regularly ever since and now they are not available in InDesign. I really need to use them.

I found a page on Adobe, Troubleshoot fonts | Mac OS X
On PostScript type 1 fonts you need to copy/move the fonts to the correct font folder because Font Book doesn't copy them into the folder. Select the fonts double-click the fonts and Find in the font Book app and validate.
The correct font folder depends how you are set up. I am by myself so my font folder was MyHarddrive/Library/Fonts. I was using Suitcas fusion and the fonts are located in a different folder.
Most of the fonts have worked. Go to
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-fonts-mac-os-x.html
    This should help. Good Luck.
