Revoking authorisations on dead Mac's

I have 2 dead Mac's a 2004 iBook and a 2005 Powerbook. Both of these Mac's were when working iTunes authorised. Now they are not working can I REVOKE the authorisations without doing it via the broken computers (which I obviously can't!)
Cheers

  • Erase hard drive on a dead mac

Is there any way to erase a hard drive on a dead mac? When I press the power button, the start up sound goes halfway, the screen remains black but the LED turns on. I was told at the Apple store there's water damage so I'd like to sell it for parts but want to erase the drive before I do. Additionally, I'd prefer not to take it to an outside service provider, as I think it'd be a waste of money for a simple thing I can do on my own. Would a hard drive enclosure be best to buy? Thanks!

Well then an external enclosure would be a good idea...place the drive in it, plug it in to another computer and use Disk Utility to erase it...you can use the enclosure in the future for another drive.

  • Dead Mac. Can I update iPhone to IOS5 on another machine?

I've got a dead Mac that held my iTunes account. All content is safe in external drives. I am overseas and not getting a new Mac for a couple of months, but would like to upgrade my iPhone and iPad to IOS5. I've got another computer (Win7) that I could use to accomplish this, but do not want to wipe these phones in the process. What are my options at this point?

Actually, you can burn a DVD or USB (8GB) thumb drive and let him boot and install from it. Or, you can actually run the InstallESD.dmg file from his machine. I've done both and Lion installs.
Personally, I would burn a DVD or thumb drive so you always have it.
Burn the InstallESD.dmg to a bootable DVD.
Launch Disk Utility and click the Burn button
Select the InstallESD.dmg file from your desktop as the image to burn. Insert a blank DVD and wait for the the image to be burned.
Burn the InstallESD.dmg to a bootable USB thumb drive.
Open Disk Utility and drag the InstallESD.dmg file to the left side pane. Go to the Partition tab ad select 1 Partition from the drop down menu. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) on the left. Click the Options button under the partition table and choose GUID Partition Table. You will need this to make the drive bootable on a Mac. Hit the Apply button when ready to format the drive (it will erase everything on the drive).
Click on the Restore tab and drag the InstallESD.dmg file to the Source. Drag the USB partition to the Destination. Hit the Restore button and it will create the bootable USB drive with the OS X Lion installer

  • Folio Builder does not support proxy authorisation on the mac.

It does not work because the Folio Builder tries to connect to the proxy as "anonymous". I don't know any solution up to now... Anyone?

  • How to deauthorize a dead Mac

    Hello
The logic board on my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz failed and I moved the two hard drives to a 1.8 GHz G5. Do I need to deauthorize the dualie? My Adobe software includes Photoshop Elements 3, Acrobat 5.0, Adobe Reader 9, and Flash Player. I cannot boot the original G5.
    Jim

    HI Jim,
There's no way to deauthorize the software on a dead disk.

  • Extracting DVD from seemingly dead mac mini

    Hi all,
I have a PPC mac mini, which now seems to have gone dead (if that is the correct word). From what I can see of how the mini 'doesn't' work, and comparing with posts in this forum and on the net, it is a case of a damaged HDD. Thus the mini won't boot from the HDD; to circumvent that i used the OS DVD to boot from, but now even that too is not working and the mini won't start at all. (have also tried everything else-reset PRAM, etc). I have come to the stage where I just want to chuck the mini in the trash, but don't want to lose the OS DVD (i think it is the Tiger upgrade DVD that is in the drive). Since the mini won't start, can anyone advise how i can extract the DVD in this situation. On the other hand, if someone has an idea of how to get the mini working again, that would be excellent.
(frankly, I don't really want to lose the mini, but don't seem to have any other option). I'm currently using a MacBook

One thing you can try: plug in a USB mouse (a Bluetooth mouse won't work), hold down the left mouse button, and start up the system. Keep holding down the mouse button and with luck, after a minute or so, it will eject the disk.
If that doesn't work, try this: restart the system and hold down the Command, Option, O and F keys and keep them down until you get the ">" prompt. If you can get to that prompt, type "eject CD" (without the quotation marks). If that will won't eject the disk, you'll have to get a technician to assist further.
As to getting the mini working, I don't know. If it's a damaged hard drive, that may be suppressing the boot as the mini keeps trying to mount the drive. Pulling the drive out would be the next step; if that is indeed the problem, the mini should then be able to boot from a CD. If so, you could then replace the hard drive. You can find a 2.5" PATA drive for under $50.00 US (and probably cheaper) if you shop around.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do you retrive files from dead mac book?

Hi all. Been in to genuis bar....apparently my logic board is fried. Comp will not start up....not a screen issue. They gave me options. I'm buying a new comp, but I was told there is a way to retrive my files from dead comp....anyone know how to do it without sending it out? Is this something I can do?

    Follow-up issue...
I purchased a new mac book and I was able to remove my old hard drive.  I connected the old hard drive to my new computer and was able to recover documents/files/some music.
I was attemting to open my old photo files, in order to select and copy only the photo albums and photoes I want to keep and....
However, I have encounntered a problem....when I try to open my old "IIPhoto Library" in my old "pictures" folder, I receive the follwoing message:
The Photo Library Needs to be Upgraded to Work With This Version of IPhoto.  Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of IPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries can take an hour or more to complete.
    Quit               Upgrade
I quit out and am seeking help!
I am afraid if I click upgrade, I will lose and destroy all my old pics!
Any advice????????? or idea hwo I should proceed?
    Thank you!

  • On start up - loud pop, burning smell, dead Mac.  Help, please!

This morning when my wife tried to fire up her heretofore reliable G5, there was what she described as first a popping sound followed by the smell of something burning. The smell went away quickly, but the computer now seems to be dead. My guess after looking through the forum is the power source. But having learned the hard way about making assumptions I'd like to run it by people (this forum) who know a lot more about my Mac than I do!
Does this sound like a power source issue, and if not what else can it be? Assuming the power source is the problem, how do I determine the correct replacement? I know the computer is a G5 2.0, but I'm not sure of production date, etc. that I might need to know to get the right replacement. Finally, where is the best place to get a replacement power source, hopefully without paying more than the value of the machine?
As always, thanks in advance for any help and advice you all can give me!

OK, before we go any farther, is the flat-liner G5 liquid cooled?
Actually, specific model information would probably help. Remove the big side panel and look at the tiny label at the bottom of the side of the computer. That will have, among other things, the serial number and some information as to the configuration of the computer when shipped. Using the serial number, you can get more specific information on the unit at
    http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
(It also appears that the first three digits in the serial number conform to the year and week of production. (310 means tenth week of 2003, for instance).
Usually, a popping sound followed by a burning smell means a capacitor. Those who have experienced such over the years recognize the smell of cooked electrolyte, as opposed to the smell of roasted magnet-wire varnish that accompanies a transformer failure.
While the power supply is the most-likely culprit, it could be a cap on the logic board or a PCI or video card. The good news is that such failures are usually easy to spot by visual inspection. That being said, not all capacitors are visible, like, for instance, everything in the power supply assembly.
While it would probably be relatively easy for an experienced person to diagnose, it probably is not something for the inexperienced to tackle.

  • Constantly resetting PMU, now a dead MAC

This has been an ongoing problem with my G4. I am always having to reset the PMU whenever the unit loses power or was unplugged from UPS -which worked and got it going again. Now it's not responding at all. No sound, no lights, nothing, dead. Per an earlier posting I replaced the battery but now it's not responding at all. Because I was always having to reset it, is the PMU corrupt to the point where it has to be replaced? Do I replace the logic board too? Does anyone have any other suggestions? My G4 is approximately 6 years old (ancient, I know)
    G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Thanks for the response! I will check the power supply, I should mention that when I insert the power cord into the unit I do see a little flash of current through the plug end, however when I press the power button it remains 'dead', no lights, no sound nothing. Will check the power supply though. Thanks again, this forum has really been a great help!!

  • New Mac wants to talk to dead Mac "There was a problem connecting to the server"

Got a new iMac - it's great. However, when I start up, it still wants to talk to my long-gone Mac Pro (see message below). I have to click "OK" about a half-dozen times as it reappears.
This message will also come up when I open my Livescribe Desktop software.
Is there a simple way to track the source of this, and make the iMac "forget" its dead descendant?
    Thanks!

Sorry - I wanted to clck "helped me" AND "solved my question, because it certainly did.
I had mistakenly thought that checking a login item eliminated it from opening at startup; WRONG - it just "hides" it.
I got rid of all of the "vestage" items (stuff from old Mac that cannot be located now, with the "!" symbol to the right of it's title), and now I restart unmolested.
    Thank you, Linc!

  • No light on Maglock, Dead Mac?

I left my Macbook on last night and open, plugged in. When I got up this morning, the maglock light was flashing green (very odd) and my Mac would do nothing whatsoever - totally cold and silent.
I unplugged it, tried a different wall socket, but still no luck. Somewhere along the line the maglock light went dead. It still does not light up.
The battery lights all come on, and I've tried a reset without the battery in, tried resetting the PRAM, but nothing works so far.
My MacBook is currently an expensive paperweight - any ideas please?

Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Reseat the battery and reconnect the power adapter.
Press and release the power button to turn on the computer.
After you release the power button immediately press and hold appleoption+PR until you hear the start up chime twice. Release the keys once you have heard it twice.
If you do not get any sort of response contact Applecare and request service.

  • Hard drive removed from old, dead mac. I need your help!

So the logic board failed on my 2006 15" MacBook pro. Apple were charging £500 to replace the board, so I've decided to get myself a new MacBook. At the Genius Bar, while we were discussing how I could go out fixing the laptop, the genius was kind enough to remove my hard drive for me. He explained that there are simple USB cables you can buy that literally connect to the loose hard drive one end, and pop into the USB of the new mac the other. My first request is can anyone link me to a cable to buy (preferably uk). Every time I search I get external USB hard drives. The second piece of help I need is how I go about restoring some old files. I want everything as clean as possible; no migration type processes, just drag and drop. Once this is done, I have some worries about connecting my iPhone and getting things to carry on as normal (without losing apps and photos).
    I appreciate any feedback.

The driive enclosure required will be the SATA enclosure. (The IDE would be for a much older machine.) The best policy would be to take the extracted drive with you if you are shopping in person; that way the tech help on site can identify exactly the model needed. Just one word before opting for a FireWire enclosure: the newer Macs have FireWire 800 only, no longer FireWire 400 ; your old 15" had both ports but the new Mac will have only 800. That means you might need an adaptor cable 400 to 800 if the enclosure is 400. There will be no similar complication if it is  USB only. The advantage of FireWire is speed and Mac compatibility.
Once you have this bit of kit, then you are ready to tackle the main task of Migration or simply copying to the new Mac.

  • How to retrieve emails from a dead Mac?

My mid 2010 Mac Pro running OS 10.7 has died ( logic board)
    I have replaced it with a 2011  i5 3.1ghz  iMac running OS 10.8
I have put the SSD drive from the Mac Pro into an external USB case.
Is it possible to retrieve my emails from the old drive used in the Mac Pro to the Mail App on the iMac even though the two Macs use different OS?
I found I cannot access Mail on the old drive as the operating system is different and therefore won't open.
    Any help gladly accepted.

    Hi Loner T,
Thanks for your quick response. Yes the SSD was my boot drive on the Mac Pro.
I have now plugged it via USB external case into the iMac.  Next I went to system preferences and change the boot drive to the SSD one.
Wonderful.. I now have access to everything on this drive.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Data recovery from dead Mac?

    Hey people,
Sorry if this isn't quite the right place to post but thought it would get best results.
My Mac (PowerMac G5) died the other day - some sort of spillage on the logic board etc, means that the repair will be lots of money, I'm therefore, buying a new one - Mac Pro, in fact.
The trouble is, I REALLY need the data on one of the drives and can't wait for my new Mac to come through to stick the drive in.
Any ideas on how to rectify this?
I know nobody (within close distance) with a G5 to stick the drive in. But being an SATA drive, which other computers could I put it in to extract the data?
    Thanks!
    James

Hi James, any G3, G4, or G5 running the same OS version will be safe and work if it has built-in SATA, or a SATA card in it. An IntelMac may work if it's running Tiger, Leopard may cause problems if it requires any disk maintence/repair.
Another option is a Firewire case that takes a SATA drive...

  • Save hard drive files from a dead mac

Hi, my mac recently broke, but the hard drive is still intact. (Screen is black, can't see anything) Is it possible to let's say, connect my mac to another computer and transfer my files ? I have a lot of precious school work on it, and it would be a shame to lose it all. Thanks!

If the broken Mac won't run, you'll have to pull the drive and mount it in a Firewire or USB external case. Then, presuming that the drive is good, you should be able to get all the files from it. If it's just the screen on the Mac that's bad and it has Firewire (and isn't really old), you may still be able to start it up in Target Disk Mode and get it to mount the drive on your other Mac.
