Revolving failed disk in RAID

I have two mirrored RAID sets, for a total of four drives (internal). For some reason one of these drives came up as failed and the set it was in as degraded. My reaction was, no problem that's why I have mirrors.
However, and here's where my tech savviness falls short, after 2 reboots (had to get some other things done and put together a new cloned back up with super duper) this drive and the set it is in are coming up fine, but another drive is coming up as failed and its set as degraded!
What's going on? Should I attempt to rebuild the new degraded set? I'm at a loss.

It's a problem, because its not a failure with the drive, i think it's a stability issue with one of the connections either on the raid controller card itself or an issue internally with the card, which I don't know. I'm using Raid 6 + Hop Spare both for throughput and Security.
Just wondering whether someone out there has encounter a similar issue regarding IDE(#) FAILURE AND their solution if they ever found one.
I'm tired of rebuilding this volume set.

  • Disk Utility RAID Issue

I'm trying to determine if the problems that I'm encountering are a software issue or a hardware issue.
I'm setting up a Mac Pro with Leopard and have four Maxtor 6G160E0 160GB hard drives that I'm trying to set up as two Mirrored drive sets. Everything seemed to go fine, created the two mirror sets, installed Leopard, configured and tested two user accounts and Office 2004, then updated everything to the latest version. When done I shut it down planning on moving it to it's final home tonight.
But, when I turned it on both mirror sets were degraded - all four drives were still recognized as RAID slices but came up as failed in the RAID tab. I saw no errors reported in the log so I assumed that those two drives were faulty. I shut down, moved the good drives to bays 1 & 2 and rebooted.
First reboot gave me a prohibition symbol instead of the usual Apple. Powered down and on and it booted fine but the second drive came up as a failed RAID slice. Rebooted again and both were fine.
I reinstalled the two "failed" drives and reformatted them - both reformatted fine and mounted without problems. I unmounted the new partition just in case, but, when I tried to rebuild the RAIDs I get the following in the error log:

I'm at a loss at the moment. I am leaning towards bad drives, but FOUR bad drives all at once is suspicious.
I've searched for similar issues and found none so I thought I'd check here and see if anyone had any ideas.

    G'day Zeekm,
Thank you for that. I did this and it seems to work. The Disk Utility GUI does not seem to work.

  • Disk utility false "failed" disk errors

Hello, I'm really hoping someone can help me solve this problem.
I have an iMac (see specs below) connected via Thunderbolt to a LaCie 2big RAID drive (with two 3TB internal Seagate drives set up as mirrored RAID slices). Both the iMac and the LaCie drive were purchased brand new in 2012 and worked flawlessly until April 2014. In April, one of the LaCie's two internal drives failed and could not be rescued using Apple's Disk Utility. Since the LaCie unit was still under warranty, LaCie replaced the affected internal drive at no cost. Since then however, Apple's Disk Utility has been giving me a "failed" disk warning on the same internal drive about once a month. The first time, LaCie simply directed me to reformat the drive and the problem went away. But the same problem has appeared roughly every month since then.
I sent the entire unit back to LaCie for diagnosis and they told me that the drive is perfectly fine. In other words, it's a software failure, not a hardware failure. I was told that Disk Utility was giving me false errors, possibly caused by the iMac going into sleep mode and not ejecting the disk properly. They said they've seen it before, but Apple has not yet released a patch for it. Since receiving the drive back from LaCie, I've changed the iMac's energy saver settings to prevent it from going to sleep after any inactivity. However, the same drive failed again this morning.
The only solution LaCie has given me is to wait for Apple to release a patch and in the meantime, reformat my drive whenever the "failed" warning appears to clear the problem. However, I have more than 2TB of data on this drive and the process of backing it up, reformatting the disk and copying all of my data back again typically takes more than 20 hours. I simply cannot afford to keep doing this every month. LaCie seems to have washed their hands of this and pointed their finger at Apple's Disk Utility. My questions is, has anyone else had similar problems? And if so, what is the solution?
    Hardware Specs:
    27-inch iMac, Mid 2011 (3.1 Ghz Intel Core i5, 12 GB RAM)
LaCie 2big 6TB Thunderbolt RAID disk (set up as two 3TB mirrored RAID slices)
    Thanks,
    Mike.

Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 and 10.6:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components.
As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done.

  • B-Series Disk details RAID rebuild issues after disk removal

    Hi,
after removing and reinserting one disk from a RAID-1 on our B-Series blades for testing, the disk details for the reinserted disk will not be fully shown.
Only the disk itself gets detected and "Presence" shows "equipped" (see attached screenshot).
It also doen not look like the RAID would be rebuilt.
So does anyone know how to:
    * Get all disk details again.
    * (Automatically) reinitialize the RAID rebuild.
    * Monitor the RAID status.
    * Be notified of a RAID failure.
    Ralph

    Hi,
not very happy with the fact that UCSM doesn't display a disk or RAID status.
Any chance that we might see that in an upcoming release?
    We are using ESX 4.0 U2, RHEL 6 and W2K8 R2.
Hope that MegaRAID tools would work and can be queried by SNMP (or so).
I found out how to get the disk data again and get rid of the following warning that obviously comes with not getting the disk details:
    Description:
    * Server sys/chassis-1/blade-6 does not fullfill Service profile vmw66 due to incompatible-number-of-local-disks
    * ID: 828447
    * Cause: server-failed
    * Code: F0337
    Solution -> re-aknowledge the server...
Any chance that this might be a bug (in 1.4.1i)?
edit: Seems that has been around for a while:

  • Rebuilding failed drive in RAID mirror

I've inherited a 10.4.7 mailserver. It's first 2 disks are mirrored, and contain the OS and mail spool. Today, the 2nd disk failed. The raid is degraded, but things are running. I've gotten lots of conflicting info about how to properly repair the mirror. I have a new disk I want to use to replace the failed one. Are these hot-swappable? So far the concensus seems to be to power down the box, swap the good drive with the bad, power back up, and use Disk Utility. Exactly what to do in disk utility is my question.. one source says to drag the new good disk listed in the menu overtop of the old one in the raid set. Others just say 'click rebuild'. Has anyone done this successfully, and what procedure did you follow?
I really want to get this right the first time, since the machine is a mail server.
    Thanks alot!

    First, what's the machine?
The XServe is the only system that supports hot-swapping drives. Any other machine will require a power-down, disk-swap, startup process.
Apart from that, you may find that the OS will automatically rebuild the mirror once the new disk is available. If the array was created under 10.4 that option was available when the RAID was created. If it was created under 10.3, auto-rebuild was not an option and had to be explicitly enabled.
If the array is not set to auto-rebuild then you can use the GUI or the command line to initiate a rebuild.
The instructions you have for the GUI sound correct - drag the new drive into the RAID configuration pane. If you prefer the command line you'll need diskutil repairMirror, passing in the existing array and the new disk.

  • RAID card or Disk Utility RAID - Need simple comparison please.

Folks, I am trying to make sense of the necessity or lack thereof for Apple's RAID card. Can someone provide a simple breakdown or comparison of the RAID card and/or loading the Mac Pro with drives and striping them using Disk Utility. I was under the impression that I could buy a Mac Pro, fill up the drive slots and just have Disk Utility set up the RAID. I'll be working with HD.
    Enlighten me please

Can someone provide a simple breakdown or comparison of the RAID card and/or loading the Mac Pro with drives and striping them using Disk Utility.
Users that are working with uncompressed HD 1920x1080 10bit RGB video usually aim for storage speeds of 240MB/sec or more. Obtaining this level of performance across the RAID is the trick.
The Apple RAID 5 card can provide 306MB/sec. when configured as a striped RAID set, using four Seagate 250GB model 7200.10 internal hard drives with 16MB cache, when the volume is empty. By the time the striped RAID set reaches 80% full performance drops to 214MB/sec. A setup that can provide 240MB/sec. when the volume is 100% full will provide a more reliable configuration for 1080 uncompressed HD video processing.
Disk Utility can provide this same level of performance without the RAID 5 card.
So what is the advantage of the Apple RAID 5 card?
The redundancy of RAID 5 can add a layer of protection against the failure of a single hard drive. RAID 5 can be rebuilt whereas RAID 0 provides zero data protection. The problem with RAID 5 in a four drive setup is that one disk is required for storing parity data. This leaves the RAID 5 slower as only 3 disks can be used for performance. In a RAID 5 four drive setup the top speed available will usually be approximately 210MB/sec. and when full closer to 180MB/sec. As you can see RAID 5 adds some data protection but the price is lower performance. That is the feature that the Apple RAID 5 card offers combined with a bootable internal solution.
    Do I need 240MB/sec. performance?
Users that are not working with uncompressed HD 1920x1080 10bit video may find slower RAID performance will work for them. HDV requires approx. 25MB/sec and DVCPRO HD needs 100MB/sec.
On the other hand, when I am working with large video files the faster the RAID, the easier it is to work with large files. So while I may not have dropped frames with slower DV formats I still
prefer to work with as fast of a RAID configuration as I can justify.
    Other Options?
The Mac Pro has many superior performance options available for creating fast RAID volumes. My current favorite setup is the eight channel Areca ARC-1221x RAID 6 controller paired with an external Enhance E8-ML enclosure. You can see an AMUG review of it here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/areca/1221x/
This setup provides a RAID 6 array with twice the redundancy of RAID 5. It also supports up to eight hard drives which significantly enhances performance. Using eight Seagate 320GB model 7200.10 hard drives in a RAID 6 configuration with the ARC-1221x provides over 430MB/sec. when empty and over 220MB/sec when 100% full. Up to two drives can fail and the RAID can still be rebuilt. The ARC-1221x is available to AMUG members for $680 until the end of the month here:
    http://www.tekramonline.com/amugpromos.html
The Enhance E8-ML 8 bay enclosure is $595. Details are here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/enhance/e8/
You will also need two external Mini-SAS to Infiniband cable model Ext-MS-1MSB. I got mine here:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FUOMO0/arizomacinusergr
So for $1340 you get an 8 bay RAID 6 setup that provides awesome performance, supports RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, 10 or JBOD and can even be setup to boot the Mac Pro with any of these RAID configurations. I think this is a great setup.
    More Options
If the user already has SATA PM enclosures and wants to add external RAID 5 capability for minimal cost, HighPoint has introduced the new RocketRAID 2314.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/highpoint/2314/
The HighPoint RocketRAID 2314 only costs $200 but it adds nice RAID 5 performance with SATA PM enclosures when using the new Mac version 2.11 driver. Using two SATA PM enclosures with 5 hard drives mounted in each enclosure for a total of 10 drives can provide RAID 5 performance of over 370MB/sec when empty and over 318MB/sec when 100% full. It doesn't offer RAID 6 or boot capability but this is very nice RAID 5 setup.
The card costs $180 on sale here:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NAXGIU/arizomacinusergr
Two quiet Sonnet 500P five bay enclosures will run $1000
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/500p/
So for $1180 users have a high performance RAID 5 setup that supports up to ten SATA hard drives. The RAID 5 performance is twice as powerful as an internal four bay solution. Plus, this setup allows users to still utilize the Mac Pro internal bays for importing more data or for backup.
The Apple RAID 5 solution is a nice one. It just seems a little pricey compared to other faster solutions that are available. However, if Apple ever came out with a new RAID 6 card that used the internal 4 ports plus offered two external mini-SAS ports for a total of 12 drives, that would be a product totally worthy of a $1000 premium.
    Happy hunting!

  • Replacing a failed disk (SATA drive) on UCCX (MSC-7825)

    Hi,
I discovered a failed disk drive on the UCCX server (non-HA mode). Now, my task is to get this disk replaced. What are the typical steps to follow and what precautions should I take care besides backing up the config data)? Since thsi would be my first time doing this, I was hoping for some detailed steps to follow while doing this replacement.
The Model we have is the MCS-7825 -H4 CCX - premium. I have received the HD form HP.
I have found only data sheets on the cisco portal & hence was wondering if there is any other guide that can walk me through the steps.
    Thanks,

This is pretty standard hardware "stuff".
I suppose the SATA drives are configured in a RAID1+0 array through HP's Smart Array controller. You can open the HP Smart Array tool in Windows and ask it to show you the status. If it indicates the drive has failed, it will help you replace it and mirror up while the box is running.
This is a little scary if you have never done it, so I appreciate your caution.
The best thing to do is to try this on your lab machine. There is NO substitute for experience at this level.
    Regards,
    Geoff

  • My cursor turns into a revolving rainbow disk. How do I repair this problem?

My cursor turns into a revolving rainbow disk and remains frozen in that state. The only way I can "unfreeze" the disk is to turn off the computer and reboot. What is causing the problem and how do I fix it without rebooting?

    Thomas,
What you are referring to is called the Spinning Beach Ball of Death and can be caused by many things. One of the most prominent is a lack of RAM. Keep Activity Monitor open (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and the next time you have a SBBOD take a look at AM and see how much Free RAM you have. You will find this information under the System Memory tab. As a general rule of thumb if it's less than 500MB you probably need a RAM upgrade.
You can also read and apply information from the Spinning Beach Ball of Death article.
Also did you know you were posting in an iMac forum?

  • Replacing a failed disk in storage space ! unable to remove a retired disk

    Hi Folks
Not really asking for much !! we are using windows 2012 R2 storage space ; one disk failed

today we received replacement disk ; added that to storage pool - fine.
then I repaired all Virtual Disk - process was very quick and went to 100% like a flash.
then I tried to remove faulty disk by using following commands :
    $DeadDisk=Get-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName PhysicalDisk-1
    FriendlyName        CanPool             OperationalStatus   HealthStatus        Usage

    GB
    Remove-PhysicalDisk -PhysicalDisks $deaddisk -StoragePoolFriendlyName storagePool
this errored out ; basically saying that the above disk is still in-use !
Any suggestions ? does repair job take some time ? it looked very fast ; when I did get-storagejob ; it showed 100 percent completed .

    Hi,
Please reboot the server then set the failed disk to "Retired" and remove the retired physical disk.

  • Disk Utility Raid 1

    I have an iMac running OS X version 10.8.5 , Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 .
I use Time Machine to back up on a WD MyBookStudio. I recently had a disk error:
    I ran disk utility:

2013-10-21 19:34:34 -0500: The volume Time Machine was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

    2013-10-21 19:34:35 -0500:
I ran the repair tool and repaired the volume:
2013-10-23 09:55:34 -0500: The volume Time Machine was repaired successfully.

    2013-10-23 09:55:35 -0500:
Should I be concerned about this error and get another backup disk?
Should I get and additional WD MyBookStudio and run Disk Utility Raid 1 to have 2 duplicate drives?
How well does Disk Utility Raid 1 work?
Where can I find more information about running Disk Utility Raid 1?
    Thanks for your help !!!

  • Failed Disk Utility Software Raid

My external RAID hasn't been mounting as easily as normal so I opened Disk Utility to repair disk or whatnot and it shows one drive as failed. Not sure what this means or how I should proceed. I'd be surprised if that drive is dead. What does the Rebuild button do? I have backed up all the data on the mirror, but am not sure how to proceed. I'd like to keep this info on the RAID if possible.
    Dual2 G5 & Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    From Disk Utility's Help:
A disk in a RAID set has failed or is missing
Disk Utility monitors the status of the disks in a RAID set. If you see a message that a disk is missing or has failed, there are several things you can try to solve the problem.
If a disk is missing, make sure it is connected to power and turned on, and that it's connected to your computer. If you are using a FireWire or USB disk, you may need to disconnect it then connect it again.
Use the First Aid pane to repair the disks in the RAID, then check the RAID set to see if it still reports an error. You may need to unmount the RAID set to repair the disks.
In some cases, you might need to quit and reopen Disk Utility or restart your computer and then check the RAID set.
If you are using a mirrored RAID set, there might be an error while writing data to the disk. Click Rebuild in the RAID pane of Disk Utility.
If you are using a striped RAID set, delete the damaged RAID set. Your data may be lost. Be sure to back up the disks in your RAID set and other data regularly.
If you have a persistent problem with a disk in a mirrored RAID set, you may need to replace it. After you replace the damaged disk, click Rebuild to rebuild the RAID set.[/i[

  • Replacing failed disk on hardware Raid 1 mirror

    Hello all,
I have an old T2000 Server with a hardware Raid1 mirror. The secondary disk failed and I purchased a new one. Its hot swap so I plugged it in and when I do a #radctl command it shows that it is in SYNC status but it never gets back to optimal. I am unfamiliar with this process. What needs to be done to get the new disk to be synced properly? I waited hours to see if it would succeed but never did. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank You

It may take several hours depending on system activity and on disk size.
