Rewire troubles

hello
In cant get rewire to work with Logic Express 7.2 and Max MSP 4.6.2. Max MSP works fine with logic gold 6.3.1, and Abelton Live, but I cant figure out how to get it going with Logic Express 7.2.
the MSP's ad_rewire driver tries to start, but can't see Express as a rewire host. MSP then crashes, and i have to restart OS X.
any ideas what could cause this? I don't know if its a problem with logic, or Max MSP or what...

bin,
(This same response is on the Max forum as well.)
I was having the same problem as you descirbe. Here's what I did to fix the problem. After restarting the computer on last Max/MSP hangup, I
1) Deleted all files called "MaxMSP Rewire Device"
2) went to http://www.propellerheads.se/download/ and got the most recent version of Rewire (ver. 1.7)
3) Repaired disk permissions (not sure this was needed but did it anyway)
4) started Logic then started Max/MSP
5) then I open the patches from my site called "MaxLogicRewire".
http://home.lagrange.edu/mturner/
click the "logic help file" link at the top. On the logic help files page, there is a Max Patch, a Logic file, and a text file describing how to Rewire the two applications together. Doubt you need these but they are there if you want to give them a go.
I am using PowerBook (1.5) PPC, OS 10.4.8, Max/MSP 4.6.2 LogicPro 7.2.3
All worked as expected. Hope this helps you,
Mitch

• Rewire trouble when trying to slave Ableton Live to Logic

Hello,
I am trying to set up a rewire configuration on my new Mac Pro and am running into a very strange error. I am familiar with Rewire and had Logic 7.0 running with Live 5.0.3 on my older G4. Both synched tightly and were relatively easy to setup. Logic runs as the master and when you boot Live it detects this and goes into slave mode. On G4, no problem. On Mac Pro, I am getting a very strange error. On this machine I am running Logic 7.2.3 and Ableton Live 5.2.
Here is what the error says:
"Live has detected another active ReWire master application. No Rewire slave applications will be available for use with LIve unless you quit the current ReWire master application and restart Live."
When I read this error, I think... DUH! Of course Live detected another rewire master, I'm trying to sync it as a slave!!!! So this error really doesn't tell me anything other than the fact that Live cannot be the master app. On my older machine, when Live recognized Logic as the master, it automatically went into slave mode. Documentation on Live's website corroborates this. Also, Live 5.2 is suppose to work on Mactel machines. This error occurs anytime I boot Live with Logic running.
So I continue to search for a solution on this. I've read that Logic revamped the Rewire engine in 7.2.3. Has any setup changed that I should know about? I have also gone to the Rewire site and downloaded the latest version of Rewire 1.7 which is suppose to be compatible to Intel.
But over and over again, I get this irritating error message. When I click OK and boot Live up, it runs as standalone without going into slave mode.
Oddly enough, I was able to get Logic to sync to Live using the IAC bus with Live acting as master. This is a good start to finding a solution, but I really prefer to work in Logic with Logic as the master and others as slaves.
Anyone have any insight into how I can get this to work? Maybe new Logic settings? Anyone know if Live 6 is functioning correctly in this manner?

Of course, you can set up MAX to receive midi input from anywhere, you don't have to "send" the input to MAX. What you want to do is block the input from the external device in MS via restricting what devices your kdb icon hears in Layout view, and make sure it's listening to the IAC Bus, which is the easiest place to send the MAX output to to get it to MS. Max also has it's own midi bus that materializes when max appears, but if you try to set MS to listen to that, your mappings may fly away if you ever open MS without MAX open first.
this is all off the top of my head, so some of the details may be close but not exact

Just a couple things to try:
Start Live first, the Logic.
Start Logic, create your rewire plugin instance, then open Live. Try this with and without the IAC bus enabled
My setup is PT 7.3 with Live (digi version) so I really don't know about the settings in Logic or the full version of Live..
Pretty weird.. sounds like version incompatibility to me..

• Ok having trouble with Rewiring Reason 3.0 to express

I watched the tutorial but it seems as though there are subtle differences between Logic and express in terms of setup here so any help would be appreciated.

• Trouble with Rewire for Reason to Logic

I'm pretty sure I have it all set up correctly. I found help from another forum and I followed this guys directions:
Assuming Logic was run first and Reason is in slave mode, you should now go to Reason and set up the instruments you want to use. You can always add more. Open the Adv Midi Device at the top of the rack and assign each instrument to a different midi channel by clicking on a channel button and picking an instrument from the drop down menu. Make sure that the instruments are assigned to the corresponding midi channels you want and don't use channel 1 or 2, you have to start from 3 (some things you just have to accept). Delete the Reason Mixer and in the Reason sequencer, select the transport. Once that's done, go into Logic 8 (it's all different in 7) and set up a new track as an external midi track and check open library in the dialog. In the library browser select Reason and you will see, among other choices, the instruments you have created. At this point, if you select the record enable for a track in Logic and go back to Reason, the assigned instrument's midi signal indicator will light up when you play the keyboard, but there's still no sound. Do this for each Reason instrument you've created and you've completed #2.
Let's move to #3 so I can get on with my life. Go back to Logic and open the mixer. In the Options submenu select create new auxillary channel strips. In the ensuing dialog box, click on input and select Reason, which will give you options of RW Mix L and R or single channels, RW3, RW4, etc. Select the ones that correspond to the channels you've selected for the Reason instruments you created. Now everything should "work", it's still somewhat "dicey" as they say in Formula 1.
I have the track set up in logic and I'm pretty sure it's recording because I can see the little dashes/notes in the track bar, but I can't hear anything. I have no sound when I record it or when I play it back. Both of which I really really need.
Can anyone offer any suggestions??? I'd really really appreciate it.

• How to get BT to rewire my line, ongoing faults fo...

Hi,
I am having constant ongoing troubles with my BT landline with horrendous crackling, noise and sounds like someone tuning an old radio on the line, it gets so bad i can no longer hear the other person i am calling!
Since moving in to the property 5 years ago, i have had various engineers out over the last 5 years including various SPI, broadband, internal and ground engineers, everytime they temp fix the problem doing something with the line connections at the green box or at the exchange, but the fault always re-appears 4-6 months later!
The last 2 engineer visits said i had a bad joint on it between my property and the green box!
I have called BT again last week and told them about the history and that the cable needs replacing to fix this ongoing fault permanantley as i had enough with it just being temp fixed all the time, BT said they would request the rewire in the notes and they would do the permanant fix this time, so a few days later they sent out the wrong engineer, who said he only delt with inside the property and the notes said that i could not receive incomming or outgoing calls i told him the history and that the last engineers had reported a bad joint, he ran some tests he said that yes the problem was again with the cable between my property and the green box, i said that BT had promised to re-wire this cable this time and he said i'll put it in the notes and will request a correct ground engineer to come out!
The next day the phone went dead for about half an hour and then received a text saying "we've fixed your fault", i knew they had just done a temp fix again, i checked the line which seemed noise free again, however the next day it was back the same, horrendous noise on the line, so i have had to call BT yet again as this is not fixed.
Please can someone help me as to what to do to get this damged cable re-wired once and for all, i feel like going to some other provider but will be left with the same fault over and over again, this is rediculous that BT will not supply me with a fault free line and get the thing rewired once and for all.
My infinity has also suffered as i use to get 73meg at first and it's now down to ~55meg and again feel i am paying for 80meg but getting just over the 40meg service.
Please help

Update...
I emailled a moderator as my broadband was still low and a mod has kindly replied and set the wheels in motion for a profile reset.
He arranged for an openreach engineer to come to my property this morning, the engineer came and did some line testing and found it to be still in a poor state, in fact he said the test results were catastrophic!
The engineer said he would have to pass it back again to a ground engineer and the line probably has water travel inside, the ground engineer should come Friday.
Profile reset will have to wait.
I really hope that this gets sorted once and for all this time.
Thanks.

• Rewire, 1010lt and my sanity...

(Reason4.0) okay...Ive got rewire setup in Audition and it all interacts properly. Using an m-audio delta 1010LT. Sound is there, all seems proper. I just cannot figure how to record it. I record into Reason and the block is there but how the hell do I get it back into audition?
Ive been thru so much lately with broken computers, trying multiple soundcards, configurations out the wazoo...omg OMG.
HELP.

Okay. There's obviously a lot of confusion here about how all of this works. It's certainly not a simple setup.
ReWire is a technology created by Propellerhead that allows a Host application to open virtual line-input connections to Slave applications. When Audition is running as the ReWire Host or ReWire Master, it creates a track (or tracks) that accept input from a ReWire Slave application - in this case, Reason.
So Reason launches and any audio that is created and output by Reason is sent to Audition. All Audition really sees is audio input being fed to it, the same as if a microphone, turntable, or mixer were sending an audio stream. Audition does NOT know about any MIDI data - all that processing is done by Reason.
When you press PLAY or perform a mixdown in Audition, it sends an instruction to Reason telling it to begin playback, along with extra data needed for time synchronization, sample rate, etc. Reason begins processing its composition, and rather than sending its output to the soundcard, routes it directly to Audition. Audition mixes this stream with any audio or midi tracks in its own session and outputs everything to the speaker or down to an audio file.
If Reason is running as a ReWire slave application, that may explain why the "Export as Audio File" option is disabled. Try launching Reason all by itself, load your composition, and export to a file again. You can then import those audio files into an Audition as if they were any other recorded file.
jon, you said "Audition outputs it to where? I hear it but where is it going to after Audition processes it? I feel like I am missing something very simple and yet I have tried everything I can think of. "
Audition is passed the audio stream from Reason. Audition doesn't save this stream unless you perform a bounce of the ReWire track or mixdown the entire session. Make a time selection in Audition's multi-track that is equal to or longer than your Reason composition. Right click on the ReWire track in Audition and choose "Bounce ReWire to Track." It will render the audio stream from Reason into a normal audio file on a new track. (At this point you'll need to either disable or mute the ReWire track as you'll hear both the stream from ReWire AND the new audio track play simultaneously.)
Perhaps if you're still having trouble, you can describe exactly what you're trying to do and how you have things setup right now, and we can give more precise steps.

• Reason Rewire Timing??

I'm having trouble synching Reason to logic accuratly. I had the same problem dumping audio into logic from my MPC but was able to fix that through adjusting the midi output delay. How do I accurately sync a rewire application?

I've had a slightly different but perhaps related problem with Reason in both Logic and Digital Performer. In my case using the Redrum drum machine in Reason and the pattern sequencer in Reason, when you start playback it will make kind of a cut-off squelch kick drum sound on beat 1, then complete silence for about 2 and a half beats, then the sound of the beat will kick in mid-measure.
I haven't done a lot of testing about when and where this happens in the sequence; I work around it by programming 2 measures of silence (pattern D-8 perhaps) into the Redrum before the start of the song and starting the playback from that. It seems like even doing that if you start playback at measure 1 beat 1 it will make that kick drum squelch on the first beat.
Sorry my comments are so vague as to be of little concrete help but I just wanted to point out that I've also had issues on starting up playback of drum beats in Reason when using it in ReWire mode.

• Rewired Reason with Logic

Hey guys,
I am new here. I successfully rewired reason so I can hear it in Logic, but the only problem is that I hear both programs playing the sound. There might be a quick and easy solution that I do not know of since I am quite new to logic.
Anyways hope you guys can help me out!

I had the same problem.... contacted Reason Support and they said the following :
"You have to go to Reason Menu > Preferences > keyboards and control surfaces and un-tick the 'Use with Reason' box next to your keyboard."
Trouble is that when you use Reason in Stand alone then you need to check the boxes back again.
Hope this works
Fingers...

• Cant rewire reason 5 to Logic 9 after Mavericks update

Hi there,
I am using Logic Pro 9.1.8 and Reason 5 and was having no trouble rewiring Reason to Logic untill I updated to Mavericks OS, after which Reason simply doesn't rewire to Logic anymore. I tried running Logic in 32 bit as well as 64 bit mode but it has't made any difference - I start Logic and then Reason (normal rewiring proceedure), but Reason is running independent and not rewiring.
Any ideas what I could do to fix this?

• Dual 2.3 G5, good enough for LP8 and rewire with Abe Live ?

I have a Dual 2.3 G5 which i run with Logic Pro 7 and many plug-ins. There are only a few times when i freeze tracks and knock on wood my system runs really well.
However i wanna upgrade to Logic Pro 8 and Live 7 and don't want to upgrade my machine until i can afford a Mac Pro 8 Core.
Will my machine be able to comfortably run Log and Live rewired ?
Or should i upgrade to an intel iMac for the time being, will that b considerably faster than my G5 ?
Thanks
F

just make sure you have enough ram.
I'm using Reason and Live 6 with no problems.
If it's a big orch thing then I have to freeze tracks. Otherwise I'm using a 256k buffer all the time for tracking and mixing. If I start having trouble, then I'll bump up the buffer when mixing.
It's hard to believe these machines are long in the tooth, but they are.
I'm on the fence about getting a new machine, since everything is working so well now......but ymmv.
Logic 8 is tons better than Logic 7.
that's funny about guava!

• How to ReWire Melodyne Uno as slave to LP 7.1?

Hi,
I'm using the latest version of Melodyne Uno, but I'm having trouble setting it up through Rewire as a slave. When I create a new audio object in the environment and try to select it's ReWire channel, the only channels that show up in the pulldown menu are those for Reason and Ableton Live(i.e., bus's 1-64, bus's 1-32). What am I missing here? It ReWire's fine to ProTools. TIA

Thanks, Mike. I'm not sure either. I'll have to try NI support again. I emailed them before and the person didn't seem to understand what I was asking and just sent me links to the product.
I'm thinking it might be a good idea to just get Kontakt 4.1 as well. I have three EWQL libraries, so including the iLok that I'll also have to get (I wish to be rid of dongles) it'd be a little less than a $100 difference to just get Kontakt. Though I might have to get the PLAY version of EWQL Choirs just because of Word Builder.
I heard about the crossgrade discount, but didn't see the EWQL libraries listed as being eligible for the discount. I guess I'll ask support about that as well.
Thank you again.

• GB 3, Reason 3 Rewire problems

Does anyone know yet why these two aren't rewiring together properly?
I read the thread that suggested working around the problem by deleting the Ableton folder from the application support folder, but I use Ableton Live 5 and Reason extensively. I was hoping to be able to use GarageBand (and Logic's audio engine) as a mixdown tool. So, in light of that, deleting the Ableton app support folder isn't an option for me.
Has anyone at all gotten rewire to work with GB 3 and Reason/Live?
thanks!
peace,
rahlo

Hi Rahlo,
I'm a GB2/Reason user, and haven't had any trouble with ReWire (ver. 1.5.4), once I remember to start GB first, then Reason.
I've had a look into the Propellerheads forum ( http://www.propellerheads.se ) and it doesn't look like there's much current info there. One guy asked a similar question, but he's right on-the-edge: CoreDuo machine, Reason 3.0.5, Tiger... and he's asking if there's anyone with ReWire probs on that system I think an answer for him might be about 3 months away, when people catch up with him.
Even so, I think your best bet would be to try Propellerheads, either via support network or forums. An Abelton/Reason/GB mix sounds like fairly advanced tool-mixing, and fiddling with compatibility with one app could alter the performance of another.
But heck - Lots of rabbits have been pulled out of hats in this forum too

• Using Reason in ReWire Mode

Hi guys,
I'm having trouble getting Reason to work in ReWire.
I've checked a tutorial on YouTube and followed it to the letter but there is one part which doesn't seem to be working for me.
Namely, when creating an External MIDI track the video shows Reason listed in the browser window for Logic under "Library", which is then chosen, along with the relevant Reason Instrument for the External MIDI channel.
My browser doesn't show this at all, just the generic Logic sample library.
When I launched my session I was sure to open Logic first, and looking at Reason the Hardware Interface is showing "ReWire Slave Mode"
What am I missing?
I'm running Logic 9.1.3 and Reason 3.0.5 and on my MacBook Pro listed in my sig.
Thanks for any help
Don

Use method 2 to help you set up Reason and Logic.
Also you might want to upgrade from Reason 3.0 to 3.0.4.
