RF Radiation Screen Shield
Okay, I have a Mac Book Pro, and my mom is getting all paranoid about low level, long term radio frequency radiation, and she got this big sheet of "radiation-proof" plastic to "stop" the radiation supposedly emanating from my LCD screen. She's going to put it on no matter what I do, so I might as well make it pretty. Her idea was just to do a hack-job and tape the plastic onto the screen. xD
As stupid as it is, it's what she's gonna do if I don't produce something fast. Does anyone know of a reliable source that shows that LCDs don't emit RF radiation (or like, measurements or something).
OR
You could describe how to get a plastic sheet to stick just like a screen protector without gluing it or anything... then it would actually be okay, just a screen protector. The idea is it has to be professional.
Thanks.... I know it's kind of stupid, but how would YOU like it if your computer has a plastic sheet taped over your screen... I already needed to buy a case thing to mask all the little attachments that she already made me tape to it... The saddest part is that they're all fake and don't work, but I'm not allowed to take them off until I leave for college and get away, so still 3 more years of paranoia...
If your mom is truly convinced that your LCD is emitting low-level long term radio frequency radiation, then I'm not sure any reliable source would be able to convince her otherwise. A good start would be to contact Apple and see if you could request a product safety sheet on the display. Manufacturers are supposed to make them available if you ask. It might contain information that would convince your mom that the display is not as dangerous as she seems to think it is.

It sounds like you have to get the display super clean so there won't be dust or bubbles under the protector. However, once in place, it's totally invisible. It also sounds like you can remove it later if you want to.
What exactly is she getting? Can you post a link? Possibly it is available in some form that is designed to be attached to LCD displays. That would be the ideal solution if it exists, since it sounds like you are going to have to have this whether or not you want it. I'm really wondering what kind of plastic sheet this is that would stop radio waves.

Hey! I was about to buy a new screen shield for my iPad 4. I was looking at "ishell" protectors, since they should be ok, and they're fairly cheap.
Now! When looking at the different models, you find 2 different ones. The regular (translated from Danish, is that normally called the "crystal clear"??), and the anti finger print. Now they cost exactly the same. So my question is, what to buy? If you want the most transparent and least retina-disturbing one? (If you get my point)

I was inadvertently locked out of my own computer for about 10 minutes until I happened to stumble on the "Ctl + L" trick to bring up the login in screen. How can I remove or disable the gnome shell screen lock for good.
I already tried:
setting the "screen lock" to OFF under gnome setting > Privacy (gnome 3.10 appears to ignore this, or "screen lock" refers to something else)
the Disable Screen Shield extension - this has not been updated to gnome 3.10
Last edited by marko2010 (2013-11-19 18:04:06)I think I finally found a way to disable the inactivity curtain in gnome 3.10. Launch dconf-editor then drill down org > gnome > desktop> session. Find the key for idle-delay and change it's value to 0 .
Or you can do it in once step by running the command:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay 0
Note you would think that going into the gnome control center and moving Privacy > Screen Lock to "OFF" would completely disable the screen curtain, but this never worked for me. The curtain would still come up after periods of inactivity, but would no longer ask for a password. Adding the fix above, completely gets rid of this pesky thing. -

Before I spend an additional $49.00, I was hoping that someone might have experience with it.
To get a matte screen, I would have had to purchase the Pro,
which aside from $700.00 price differential, is physically too large
for my needs at 15" and I just don't need the larger hard drive
or memory capacity, as I use it strictly for travel.
My current iBook is thrashed, but at least the screen is matte...
Thanks.I agree, for anyone who does work beyond email correspondence on their computer, particularly when dealing with fine details or black backgrounds, the reflection on the glossy screen is horrible.
I don't know if this is true, but I've been told that the gloss is an add-on. When you buy a new silver iMac over the phone from Apple, you can request a new iMac without the gloss. I don't know if this is true for either the iMac or the Macbook or if you can have it removed. It should be.
If it is true, Apple should make it an optional choice on the website as well. -

[Solved] How to force enable rounded corners in a theme on GNOME 3.16

I just recently started using arch (and I regret why didnt I use it earlier -.-, such a great OS). I put up Gnome 13.16.2 as my desktop environment particularly because I like its interface (rounded corners, the ui etc. Kinda reminds me of my fav mobile OS MIUI).
And I can see that most of the themes (almost all that I have installed infact) like to remove rounded corners and give a flat rectangle. Is there some way to force rounded corners by editing the theme? I did had a look at gnome-shell.css of theme and the "panel" portion of it didnt had any such part (or atleast I couldn't find it). Some help would be appreciated, really want those rounded corners as well as the theme.

If it's supposed to be proper XML, the right way would be to fix it and use an XML parser in your favorite scripting language to load it, read the other file, and alter the data systematically.
xmllint in the libxml2 package may be useful for checking XML syntax and reformatting.
If you know Python then you could probably use the xml.dom.minidom or one of the other standard XML libraries.
If it is in the format posted then the following script should do what you want, or at least provide a starting point. It's not the most efficient approach but it seems to do the trick.

IT IS as advertised. Spray the provided liquid on the film and place the film over the Trophy screen. Allow 48 hours to set and dry. You can still use the phone at that time, but after 2 days there will be NO BUBBLES. The film texture does not bother the responsiveness of the phone and the texture is very forgiving with scratches. Had my Trophy in my hoodie pocket with my car keys. While there were a few scratches or indentations on the screen, they were gone by the next morning. I can't say enough good things about this protector.

If you get a moment, please share what accessories you were able to find and where!Um, okay, Anthony... I hit your "Trophy" link and found a 2 Trophy batteries and an HTC backplate. Out of 73 items in the "Trophy Store", 3 are HTC/Trophy specific and the rest are DROID accessories and surplus.
Trolling the forums for unhappy Verizon customers is, I am sure, a thankless job. Here's a helpful hint. HTC, Case Mate, and several other companies carry skins, authentic/customized leather cases, and screen shields. It would be a lot less insulting to your Verizon customer to point them to a page with HTC, or Windows Phone stuff in inventory and not a bunch of DROID garbage. Again, no offense to you - not your decision to overcommit on undesirable DROID accessories.
In addition, I am thinking that you would get a much warmer reception in the Trophy and/or Windows Phone Forums if you could get your Executive Management Team to carry something more than DROIDS and iPhones, Not everyone likes, is going to like, will like, or has to like the DROIDS. And your decision to carry the iPhone seems to now be a big no-profit hardware deal that has done nothing but clog our network with Angry Bird players and questions to Siri. Nice going. Difference here, Anthony, is that we DO know who to blame for this screw-up. Let the guilty parties know that they need some Nokia, HTC and Samsung Windows Phones added to the inventory. What is the new hole on the face of the iPhone 4S for?
Above the screen of an iPhone 4 you find a long horizontal hole used as a speaker to place next to your ear. The iPhone 4S has an additional horizontal hole above the "ear speaker". What is this new hole for?
Wild guess.. A second microphone for noise cancellation (so Siri or the person you are speaking to can hear better in a noisy place)?
In any case.. (a pun) you might want to avoid buying an iPhone screen film cover that doesn't have the new cutout for the new holeI don't see a "hole" on the black iPhone 4s images on the Apple web site. Best guess is that this is not a hole but a sensor of some kind (proximity, light level, whatever). I don't expect a screen shield to significantly impact it's functionality.

My iPod Touch that I purchased 4 months ago has a 'line' of stuck pixels. It goes from the top of the screen about 2.5 centimeters down. I would estimate it's 1 pixel wide and 20-30 high. Does my warranty cover this?
I tried going to youtube on one of those "Stuck Pixel Fixer" videos but it didn't work. I'm guessing it's damaged because it's a line.
This iPod Touch has always had a screen shield and has never been dropped or anything.Never mind. I was told this was because of my Zagg Invisible Shield. A guy told me this happened to his too and it went away after a day or so. Apparently it's a micro scratch which reflects light.

I have recently noticed that my macbook air mid 2013 warms up to approx 65 degs when in sleep mode for 2 hours or when I am doing my normal work. I am running Mevricks and I also use a moshi key board cover. Is it a cause of concern??The keys without covers already transfer to a small degree finger oil to the LCD screen of the Air, even the thinnest keyboard covers place pressure on the LCD, however normally this would have no bearing unless stowed away in a pack with pressure, nevertheless causing dirt and oils is increased with covers to transfer more to the LCD, ....Macbook Air as well.
Beware of keyboard covers and using same
Beware of using thick keyboard covers on your Macbook, some pretty ones sold online are rather thick and upon closing your monitor, touch the screen and transfer more finger/hand oil to the LCD but at worst press excessively on the LCD display, especially in the case of the Air and newest Macbook Pro Retina. There is ultimately very little purposeful use of these keyboard covers if you keep your hands clean, additionally they do not protect against spills as many people presume they do; directly yes, but at the edges no. They also making typing a more challenging experience and run a fine line between 'serves no purpose' and 'possibly damaging'.
Screen covers protect against nothing and place an unwanted layer between the LCD and viewing, additionally if you dont touch same or dont have any pets that might claw at the screen there is no logical reason to have a screen shield.
dust will accumulate regardless. Realistically what are you trying to protect the screen from. The back is solid aluminum alloy, the front LCD viewing screen should never be intentionally touched.

I work in a woodshop where there is a lot of dust. I don't know if the Otterbox defender is the best way to go or if I should get a custom leather pouch to seal out all the dust. I have had a leather pouch with my other phones and I know that it really keeps the dust out but I did't know how the iPhone glass will hold up to the leather rubbing against it. What do you have to say?I have the new Defender case that fits both the Verizon and AT&T iPhone 4s. It would be well-suited to your use because when it is on, most of the phone is sealed-off. It has a few silicone-rubber covers that bend out for access to the headphone jack, the silent switch, and the sync/charge connector port. When these are in place, they are secure. With them closed, dust could only reach the phone at the always-open places on the case: the speakers on the bottom, the earpiece on the front of the phone, the camera lens & flash on the back, and the microphone on the top.
If you read Otterbox's website, they explain that they leave the three speaker/earpiece holes uncovered because there is already a fine metal mesh there to keep things out. The microphone hole on top seems to small for anything to enter. The covers on the on/off, volume, and home buttons are permanently sealed and won't allow any dust in.
I am generally impressed with the case. It comes with a clear screen protector that I actually removed. I prefer the Invisible Shield, and if you remove the clear plastic cover built into the Defender, the Shield works very well (I have the case-friendly version).
For you, it would probably work better to leave the Otterbox's screen protector in place. It will keep dust out due to the way it is built. Think of it as the glass in a picture frame, only the glass is secured in place with a thin, clear, gummy adhesive around its edges (you can remove it very easily if you try, but it is secure). So, when it is in place, dust can't get around it.
I'm not going to test it, but the case seems well built enough to protect the iPhone from a five or six foot drop onto a hard surface.
If you want to see it before you buy it, I noticed Wal Mart had them in stock (though I'm sure they have the old, AT&T-only version). I looked at one there, though, and it had been opened so many times and played around with that it seemed very loose. After seeing it, I was wishing I hadn't ordered one. But, then mine showed up and it is very nice. It is not at all loose as I have read some reviewers state.
Many people say the iPhone 3G Defender case was much better and tighter, but I don't find this case at all loose. Perhaps Otterbox "tightened" its size when they redesigned it to fit both iPhone 4s.
(Note: On its website, in the FAQs, Otterbox states many times that its cases are not compatible with the Invisible Shield from Zagg. This just isn't true, at least not with the Defender. Having looked at the other cases on its website, I don't see how it could be true of them. You can very easily remove the clear screen shield that is built into the Defender case with just your thumbs. It pops right out, leaving behind an equally-easily removed gummy adhesive.
If you try to use the Invisible Shield with the Defender's shield in place, you get an "oil-slick" type effect where the two meet. Ultimately, I would much, much rather have the Invisible Shield in and remove the Defender's protector. Once you install the Invisible Shield, it is always there protecting your iPhone, even when it is out of the Defender case.
I don't know why Otterbox insists its cases are not compatible with the Invisible Shield. They clearly are, particularly with the case-friendly version of the Invisible shield, which does not extend all the way to the edge of the iPhone's front, allowing the lip that covers that edge with so many cases out there.
I am not affiliated with either company. I have always liked the Invisible Shield, and I wanted both it and a durable case like the Defender.)

Buyer Beware: Griffin Elan Form for iPhone 3G
I was having issues with my voicemail recently and it turns on the clear screen shield that comes with my Elan Form for iPhone 3G triggers the light sensor and shuts off the screen prematurely when checking voicemail. The hardshell case is great but you'll have to use a screen shield from another company. The guy at the Genius Bar confirmed this by trying it on other iphones.
I have exactly the same case.
This is also why I went with the Power Support Crystal Film protector for the front of the iPhone 3G.
I have not had any problems with it and you can't even tell that I have it installed. The Apple Store carries them at the physical store and online. -
Anyone have the Photodon anti-glare sheet for imac?

I just purchased the photodon antiglare sheet for my alu imac 24". I tried the little sample sheet first and I have to say, although it does reduce glare, it doesn't make a HUGE reduction (at least looking at the test sheet). Also, there appears to be almost a jewly, speckley appearance under the test sheet.
Is this my imagination? When you get the whole sheet on, does the screen just look "good," albeit with less glare?

SteveThis is almost like those awful "anti-radiation" screens they had back in the late 90's.
They dealt with people's fears not the real problems. A very successful and lucrative idea because it solved nothing and lead to people spending even more money.
The problem was the cheap PCs had a low refresh rate and the flickering gave you headaches. The term radiation had connotations of "nuclear", but was really just harmless light.
Sticking something on top of the glossy glass screens only exacerbates the issues. You are adding multiple surfaces to the screen. The outer surface of the sheet, the boundary between sheet and adhesive and the boundary between the adhesive and the glass. Not counting all the inevitable bubbles.
Each distorts, scatters and changes the tone and color of the light both shining onto the surface and shining from behind, plus the mix of the two. None of them improves anything.
Just smear Vaseline all over the screen, it is what they did on movie camera lens for ageing Hollywood actresses, to blur and hide their wrinkles. Or if you wear glasses take them off, it'll do something similar and equally unproductive. -
How To Clean Glossy Marks Off My Aluminum Macbook
As of some days ago, I am the proud new owner of the new aluminum macbook. I am very pleased with my purchase. The only slight problem I have is with the developing glossy marks on the space bar and on the upper part of the trackpad. From the outset, I must say that I have been meticulous when it comes to keeping everything clean and in good working order; but I have noticed recently these rather garish glossy marks occurring. Can anyone give me a good method of how I might get rid of them? I've already tried iClean spray, a small quantity of water, and a good bit of elbow grease. Still, the glossy marks remain! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I did buy a silicone key board cover (the one made for MacAir). It semi protects it from liquid spills and I can take it off the clean it really well if need be and return it to the mac.
The glossy bits you describe are probably oil from your hands so unless you plan to wear gloves its going to happen.
I also own a iphone and immediately went out and bought a screen shield and rubber type case. I used it for a day and finally came to the conclusion that it ruined the beautiful lines of the iphone and I took it off and will accept the first bumps and scratches as a natural part of life.
I will use the protective case when I am rock climbing but I now think of the protective case on the iphone like plastic covers on my grandmothers living room couch. -

I've been looking into iphone case covers like the ones advertised in iskin.com and case-mate.com . Those two are advertised in the Macworld magazine. These are the slip covers that the iphone "wears" around its sides for added protection etc.
Does anyone have any hands-on experience with any of these already? Or would you recommend another, completely different brand?
I have an 8gb Iphone if that makes any difference.

This is the 4th case I tried and I think the revo is nearly perfect. The silicon is of very high quality and adds some much needed grip to the iphone as well as some more shock and impact protection. I don't know about the plastic screen shield it comes with, it is supposed to stay on and then you take it off and it clings to the back while you are using the iphone, I probably won't use it. Another thing I really like is that it covers all the ports, some people mentioned it looked like it covers the headphone port totally. Well this is true, but the piece over it peals right back giving you instant access and it is still covered when not in use in your pocket, I was starting to notice a lot of dust build up in there but now it is covered so that is nice. It also comes with a dock cover that isn't attached but I will probably use also.
If you want a nice case I say this is the best, I got another silicone case that was cheap feeling and didn't fit very tightly. The revo fits tight and feels great, and it won't be covered in dust, it also still allows the light and proxy sensors to work while in the case. Only draw back is that if you want to use the dock you have to remove the case, but I don't see that as much of a negative. It is worth the price.
