RFC response times deteriorate with time

Hi
We notice that every time our system is restarted, performance is much improved for a the first few weeks. I can appreciate this from the fact that it is a huge system and things can 'clog up' after a while but we have been trying to isolate any specific cause / memory leaks etc.
One thing we have noticed is that although average dialog and background response times appear to increase gradually with time, RFC response times increase substantially. The first few days after a restart we see times of 2, 3 seconds, by the first week 7-10 seconds and by week two and beyond they are over 20 seconds.
We have 15 application servers and all the RFC traffic is load balanced using a RZ12 group that does not include the Central Instance; the same applies in SMQR & SMQS. We still do see some RFC traffic on the CI though... some of the application servers are on a different site, but we cannot see any differences in response times across sites...
Any ideas what's causing this and how we can keep these RFC response times down? The system is very busy and deals with a lot of RFC traffic, when users start complaining about poor performance we can usually see the system flooded with RFCs....
Due to size and nature of this system we can only arrange a restart every couple of months.
Thanks
Ross

Hi Markus, good question, but no, haven't noticed...  not sure how I'd check either? There are hundreds (if not thousands) of different transactions ran each month, I'll try sorting the transactions by time for each day and see if there are any common longer runners that have increased, but think it'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack...

  • Do you have to use Time Machine with Time Capsule? Time Capsule &Fire Wire?

Does Time Capsule have to be used with Time Machine, or can a user use Time Capsule as a straight foward external hard drive for which to copy files?
Can Time Capsule be linked via USB or Firewire for important data transfers to, and from, a MAC computer?
Thank you in advance for any input.

    1. your first question is answered by this paragraph Apple has posted at http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/wireless.html which says:
"Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily."
    2. Time Capsule can not be connected directly to a Mac via USB to transfer files. Time Capsule does not have a Firewire port. All file transfer occurs over a network connection between the Mac and this device. If you have a Mac with a gigabit ethernet port, and you cable it directly to one of the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule, the data transfer will be "pretty fast".
Keep in mind that Time Capsule is a network device designed to share an internet connection, create a wireless network, and provide shared file storage and printing on the network. It is not at all similar to a basic external hard drive.

I keep getting this error when trying to backup time capsule with time machine. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Dan’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time.
Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cable back into the back of the Tme Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.

  • AirPlay deteriorates with time

I'm finding that my AirPlay's sound quality deteriorates the longer it runs, starting with distortion and ending in a loud buzzing noise. I've got three speakers connected - a stereo plugged into an Airport Express (latest generation) and two remote wifi speakers (Bose and Philips). It clears if I restart the computer, but it's annoying to have to do that. Any suggestions?
Running an older iMac with 10.10.1. I'm using a Bluetooth mouse - wondering if that interferes.

Do you mean a Time Capsule? Time Machine is the backup Application that sends the backup to the TimeCapsule which can be a WiFi provider.

  • HOW TO SET UP time capsule with time machine?

I have not been successful in setting up time capsule with the time machine, can someone give me steps to follow?

What part are you having problems with?  You need to make sure File Sharing is enabled on the Time Capsule (which is done in AirPort Utility).  Then you just connect to the Time Capsule either wirelessly or via ethernet cable and when you go to Time Machine setup your computer should recognize your Time Capsule as a valid storage for Time Machine backups.

  • HT2497 how should i configure time capsule with time warner arris as separate networks?

i have been using the time capsule 4th generation with my home network but my connectivity seems to sometimes disconnect atleast with my macbook pro i always seem to be having to go place my cursor on the wifi logo to keep it consistent? i could jsut try and continue but really want a simple fast direction in what to do and how to configure this so that i only have access to my time capsule and network while my family may have access to the arris time warner cable network... ive heard of bridging and have had it so that my router be a bridge. whats the benefit and actual meaning of bridging in lame terms? i understand that bridging means it just runs internet through that device... so that device isnt setting any ip adresses? anywho ive messed around with the twcale internet site a bit hope i havent messed up too much. when i called time warner cable today they said they could only assist me with the arris side and not advise me with time capsule config... now i want to call apple but it seems i have to pay to call them? wow. and i bought the time capsule and best buy and was on hold for 10 minutes while being hung up rght when i seemed to be about to be helped. oh joys. anywho... help please?

We recently switched back to TWC here in the valley, att was horrible.  We get 22.6 download and 2.24 uploads usually, however...we too have been having issues with the internet becoming sluggish throughout the day, not just at peak usage times.  We have 2 computer plugged in directly and 3 others wireless but not on at the same time all the time.
I haven't gone into the Arris this time around, but am thinking there are settings that are screwed up.  We have been using the Time Capsule's wireless connection and it is terribly slow.  I'm not sure if there is a problem with the settings there or what.

  • I want to connect Time Capsule with Time Warner modem

How do you connect Time Capsule to a Time Warner modem? I am upgrading my Wi-Fi to AC and have a Motorola modem without AC, router and WiFi. I could just upgrade the Motorola modem, but I would like to use a Time Capsule. My connection to Time Warner usesd a splitter that goes to a DVR with the other end going to the Motorola modem by way of a coax connector.

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> port on the Motorola modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes. At this point the amber light will be blinking slowly on the device.
    On your Mac....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click on Time Capsule
The utility will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then display a window that looks like the screenshot below...except that you will see a Time Capsule on the screen.
Network Name......enter a simple name that you want to use as your wireless network name
Base Station Name....enter a simple name that you want to call the Time Capsule
Password.....enter a password that will be used for both the network and Time Capsule
    Verify......verify the password
    Cick Next
The utility will set up everything for you. When you see a green light on the Time Capsule, log on to the new wireless network that you have created and enter the password to connect.

  • Can I access my iMac backup file on my Time Capsule with Time Machine from my Powerbook G4?

I've got a 1.5 Ghz PowerPc Powerbook G4. My iMac Intel was recently stolen, however I still have the Time Capsule it continually backed up to. The Powerbook is running Leopard and has the Time Machine app. Does anyone know how I can (somehow) connect with my Powerbook to the Time Capsule left behind to transfer some documents off of it to my Powerbook even though it is not the Powerbook's designated backup server (drive)? Realize that my Powerbook already can access files from the Time Capsule but not the iMac backup. What I'm interested in is going into my iMac's backup file by using Time Machine on my Powerbook to grab some files from the iMac's history. Can this be done?If so, let me know.

If you mount the sparse bundle via finder. Then you can open it in the Time Machine display.. it might be difficult between versions..

Sorry to hear you iMac was stolen.. not the sort of thing that would be normally taken.

  • Stuck in "Looking for Backup Disk" in Time Machine with Time Capsule

I too am having a "Looking for Backup Disk" message going on forever . . . .
I have the following showing in my log (which is for a backup that started almost 6 hours ago . . .)
    Starting automatic backup
Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Toni%20Way;AUTH=[email protected]/Data
Mounted network destination at mount point: /Volumes/Data using URL: afp://Toni%20Way;AUTH=[email protected]/Data
Disk image /Volumes/Data/Toni’s iMac.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb
I am not getting successful backups.  I first thought it was a problem with the WD hard drive I had so I invested in a Time Capsule thinking maybe it would work better with the Mac (i.e. Apple to Apple).  I got a few successful backups when I got the Time Machine on June 12th but none since.  I only just noticed that I wasn't having successful backups as there was no notification.  I have tried a Full Reset as per these instructions with no success:
    http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html
    Help!

I've successfully changed the name of the Time Capsule to "Toni TC" but still no success.  It is still sticking at Looking for Backup Disk.
Still have a space in the name.. No spaces. No non-alphanumeric.
Not that I think that is your problem.
From the log the actual unit is mounted and you have everything working but not actually able to copy packets across the network.
I have an ethernet cable running from my cable provider's router to the Time Capsule and then an ethernet cable running from the Time Capsule to the iMac.
This is good... also turn off wireless in the computer to force connection by ethernet only.
But when I go into Disk Utility, it isn't listed in the left hand side.
Only the sparsebundle will list and only when it is mounted.. TC is a network drive not a local drive. It will not show up in disk utility.
Let me suggest you erase the TC and start over.. sometimes it is the only way to get things going again.
    A4 reset of TM. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
And do a verify of the local disk.. A5.
I would also like you to test copying a single large file to the TC.. create a new directory in the TC from finder.. and copy a single large file.. 1GB sort of size and get actual speed measurement from Activity Monitor.

  • Trouble setting up Time Machine with Time Capsule

I have just replaced my airport wifi system with a new 1TB Time Capsule on a home system using a DSL internet connection. I have been able to configure the wifi and it is working fine but Time Machine just gives me an error message saying 'The backup disk image could not be created'.
I have returned it to factory settings and reconfigured twice but still get the same message. It hasn't backed up at all.
I have run out of ideas so any help would be appreciated.
    John

    Hey there,
Have you given your computer's local network a name?
To do so, head to System Preferences --> Sharing
At the top of the sharing pane should be a text box. If the box is empty, then you need to give your Mac a name. Hope this helps.

  • Recognizing Time Machine with Time Machine

    Hello,
I have searched for the last hour and havn't found any information to help my situation.
Excited about being able to wirelessly backup to my AEBS, I plugged my Time Machine drive (which worked flawlessly for months) into my AEBS. It worked! But I didn't care for the speeds, so I unplugged the drive from the AEBS, and plugged it back into my laptop.
Now, when I go to backup, it says 133gb needed for backup, and only 7gb available. So it sounds like it is trying to start all over. Also, in the System Pref for Time Machine, there is a dash for Oldest Backup.
Weird thing is, when I hit the Time Machine logo, all of my backups are still there, and I can restore any file.
How can I get my Time Machine to restore incrementally again without starting from scratch? I have backups that go as far back as December 31st, and do not want to lose these.
    Thank you in advance.
    -Ryan

    No.
You can read ANY time machine backup to restore from it.
To write TO a time machine backup, the software on your Mac must recognize the DRIVE as well as the particular backup set.
The BEST solution is as follows.
    REFORMAT the Time Machine drive.
Connect it to the AEBS, making sure to enable password access to the drive.
Connect with an ethernet cable to the AEBS and right-click on the AEBS drive, then select Show Original.
Drag the new "original" icon over to your dock, next to the trashcan, or into the top area of a finder window (under devices). This will make sure that the drive is automatically reconnected when you are in range of the AEBS.
Open Time Machine prefrences, and click Change Disk.
    Select the new device.
Backup up your first full backup.
Every subsequent backup should be quick, depending on how much data has changed, and as long as you remember the disk password with your keychain, time machine will automatically grab your stuff when you connect.

  • Using Time Capsule with Time Machine AND as iTunes Library

I want to use Time Capsule as Back up solution for Time Machine and additional as storage for my iTunes Library. We have as a family 3 three Macs and want to use TC as back up solution for each Mac. That is no problem. But is it possible to use TC as external iTunes library as well. Meaning as TM back up solution AND iTunes library?
    Any ideas how it works?

Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its partition. This will cause problems if you're using that same partition for your iTunes library. I see two options around this problem:
    1) Partition the Time Capsule volume into two volumes, one for Time Machine, the other for iTunes. I understand that this can be done, but can't give you any advice on the method.
    2) Attach a USB external drive to your Time Capsule and put your iTunes library on that drive.

  • I had two computers backing up on my time capsule, with time machine. Main computer with ethernet cable and laptop... airport. My iMac hard disc failed and I can't find the back up on time machine. Please help!

I open time machine preferences and only see the backup for the laptop. Have no idea what to do at this point. The time machine was backing up my iMac just fine until it stopped working.

It was really empty. Clicked on, nothing.
But no prohibited signs, like these:
Get info on folder, zero kb. Just one user account on each mac.
I did navigate back several days prior to my Mac dying. Still nothing.
Sounds like it may have been excluded, or perhaps damaged.
Just for future reference, it's always a good idea to keep "secondary" backups.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.
