RGB to CMYK gives me a white glaze? how to get rid of it

In photoshop cs5 when i convert an image i am working on from RGB to CMYK i get a white glaze over the image? as if i have added a photo filter or something? do you know how to prevent this on a mac computer?

Sorry, I don't understand what you're trying to say here. How can the "before" image be in any post of mine if I have never been able to see it?
The image I posted in my post, was your "after" image CORRECTED by me as explained in that post:
"Converting it to sRGB and setting the black and white points via a quick Auto Levels adjustment, brings about an improvement."
In other words, I downloaded your "after" image, opened in Photoshop, went to the Edit menu and used Convert To Profile to convert it to the sRGB color space, then I ran and Auto Levels adjustment. That's how I fixed your mess.

Geebus Chrysler! No, that is indeed not just "primitive" but totally wrong. Go to the CONVERT TO PROFILE menu item in the Edit menu in Photoshop, and from that menu select the specific CMYK profile you want (or your printer requests). Be careful to select CONVERT TO PROFILE, do not under any circumstances choose "Assign Profile"! Converting to the appropriate CMYK profile will also automatically change the image mode to CMYK mode.

In a nutshell: Your Monitor profile should be the file resulting from your calibrating and profiling your monitor with a hardware calibrator puck. Calibrate and profile your monitor regularly and often. Your monitor profile thus will be device-dependent, specific to your monitor.
Your working space, on the other hand, should be a device-independent profile, such as Adobe RGB or sRGB. It should NEVER, ever be your monitor profile.
Your target profile when printing should be device-dependent and specific to the combination of ink, paper and printer model you'll be using. For the web, create a copy of your image file and convert it to sRGB, then save it as a JPEG as needed.

you might wanna try this...
take a dry, soft piece of cloth (note: DO NOT USE TISSUE PAPER, YOU'LL END UP WITH MORE SCRATCHES) and squeeze some toothpaste on it, yes, toothpaste. just regular ones will do.
start polishing on your macbook cover in a circular motion. polish about 5-10 minutes or even longer if you wish.
the reason for using toothpaste is that it is a mild abrasive, and it would get the minor scratches out. the deeper ones you gotta try something else.

Masses of white space, how to get rid of it?

Im reading in an XMl file, changing a few values then printing it back to the same file. But everytime I read it in and print it back, its putting a blank line after every other line. So if I read in a file that looked like this:::

It prints to the file ok even though it print it like this <tag><anotherTag></anotherTag></tag>
rather than

But that doesnt matter as it saves file space.
BUT
now I have another problem ...
After about 10 records have been added the program slows dowm and its gets slower and slower and slower. Obviously its coz the fiels getting bigger and bigger. At which point does it get slower and why. Is it the printing bit that gets slower or the reading in. Are there faster ways to parse a document, which is the fastest parser?
Sorry for all the questions, im not being lazy. I tried to tackle these problems long time ago but ended up using a database, now I want to try again but Im restricted by time.

If you want a relevant answer you may have to elaborate on what you actually mean. Posting screenshots might help, too.
In any case multiple conversions of an image are not advisable in general.

You could also try positioning the image using a code like this:

background-position: 1264px 963px;
Change the dimensions to suit your style. 963px is chosen here because the stripe is about 5px give or take 1px either side.

How to get rid of white space in EPS embedded in Word for letterhead template?

Does anyone know how to get rid of the white band in the bottom of this letterhead?
I embedded the EPS image (done via Illustrator) as a watermark in the header section of MS-Word.
It looks fine in the Word version, but as soon as I try to print the document - either via Word or via a PDF - that white
band on either side of the footer and underneath it keeps showing up. I can't get rid of it. I tried this on a PC and a Mac
and those white bands won't go away.
If anyone could let me know how to resolve this problem, I would be eternally grateful!

If you want this to bleed, then you will have to print on oversize paper and trim or find a printer that will print borderless.

How to Get Rid of White Stripe At Top of Firefox Browser

I have the current version of Firefox installed. Recently, perhaps with the most recent install, I'm not exactly sure, a white stripe appeared at the top of the browser, right under the search and URL boxes at the top of where websites would normally show, a white stripe about a 1/2 inch thick has appeared. Not on every single site, google.com works fine, but for example, it blocks out the home, connect, discover and me tabs on Twitter. Or if you go to mozilla.com, the tabs at the top of the mozilla site briefly show, then are blocked by the white bar. You can't click on any of them, even if you have your mouse pointed at the right spot. You can refresh the screen and they'll briefly show again, but not long enough for you to click on anything.
I've run a number of search engine queries trying to find out how to get rid of this problem, but I'm only finding resolutions for webmasters, not for end users who have to deal with this problem on the other end of the browser.
Anyone know how to get rid of this nuisance? I'm about ready to uninstall Firefox because its useless on many sites with buttons and tabs on top.

I shut down all but one of the extensions, and that seems to have resolved the problem. Thank you!
Now to figure out which extensions I need, and which I don't, because I don't have a clue. I don't remember installing most of these, I only recall one or two (nothing looks spammy like funmoods, but still don't remember when or why these were added...)

I have an image that has a really bright vibrant blue in it. When I convert it from RGB to CMYK, it gets pretty dull. Is there a "trick" or something to do to a file after converting to CMYK to bring back some of it's vibrancy?

Whenever you convert, you're always converting from the source color space to the destination color space.
In this case, your source color space is sRGB, because that's the color space your file is in.
Your printer told you that the CMYK profile they use is USWebCoatedSWOPv2, so that's the destination color space you want to convert to. You can consider that the printer's profile.
So, how to convert?
There are two ways.
First, you could go to Image > Mode > CMYK. Easy, but maybe not right.
That method will convert to whatever defaults are set in Photoshop's Color Settings (Edit > Color Settings). Check out your Color Settings. If they are set to any of the North America presets, you're in good shape, because the CMYK default is USWebCoatedSWOPv2. However, let's say that the printer told you to use Web Coated SWOP 2006 Grade 3. Then you need to take a different approach...
Second way: go to Edit > Convert to Profile...
In the dialog that appears, click on the Destination pop-up and scroll to find the appropriate profile.
Click OK. Conversion done.
This is a more deliberate method that also gives you control over Rendering Intent. (That's another discussion. For now, use Relative.)
-I guess it's used in soft proofing but sure how all this works. If I soft proof and it's still not looking right, am I able to edit with their profile turned on some how?
A soft proof is an on-screen simulation of what your color will look like once you do the conversion. In your case, you would turn on soft-proof (command-Y) while still in sRGB to simulate the look of the CMYK color space.
To select the color space to simulate, go to View > Proof Setup.
Click on Custom...
Click on the Device to Simulate popup.
Scroll to find the destination color space.
Then when you hit command-Y, you'll see a soft proof of that color space.
Best practices suggest that you do the bulk of your color correction while still in RGB, but with soft proof on.
Also, should I get a profile for the paper I'm using as well?

Although I've read somewhere it's hard to have your monitor replicate paper because monitors are so bright....
Not exactly. The challenge in getting a visual match between monitor and proof/print is based on the fact that a monitor is emissive (i.e., it's a light source) and a print is reflective (i.e., it only reflects light that's hitting it.) However, in a proper, well controlled editing environment, it's possible to get a shockingly close match between monitor and proof/print. All the variables are controllable.
The bottom line with all of this is to be able to get accurate, predictable color on press (or out of your inkjet) based on what you see on screen. It can be done; I do it every day. It just takes some study and rigorous process control.

How to get rid of blank white page next to cover page when converting an indesign file into a pdf flip book

Hey Everyone,
I created an catalog using indesign and now I want to convert that into a pdf flip book. I have exported it as a SWF then changing the SWF back into a pdf. It works great however, I keep getting a blank white page next too my cover page, and I really don't want this. I find it very distracting and visually unappealing. Is there any way to get rid of this blank white page? Or any other suggestions on how to create a flip book out of an indesign file.

It sounds as if you're not checking the pagination properties of the chapter after the problem within the book file.
The book file settings always trump the component file's settings.
So this would mean that, if Chapter 3 is set in the book file to start on a Right page, the book enforces this by adding a blank page to Chapter 2.
You should be able to fix this by selecting all the component chapters in the book, right-clicking and setting all the pagination properties to start on Next Available page, but I don't have 7 on this system so I can't give you the exact key strokes.

White space under table on page how to get rid of it

I created a new page, inserted a table to fill the page and
put in a background color. When I look at the page in Dreamweaver,
there is no white space under the table at the bottom of the page.
When I preview the page in a browser, the table ends about an inch
from the bottom of the page and I have about an inch of white space
under the table. Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Fix up the errors with your html firstly - then see where you
are at with
the page....
The first thing to do would be to get rid of the table
heights - it's
invalid and won't render cross browser anyway. Error:

Could you please get to this page in muse project and "select all items on a page" and check if there's any rectangle or div placed at the bottom ? If yes ! try removing the same and re-publish the site and check if that helps.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely. Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.
