RH 9 / FM 10 linked files crashing

FM 10
  Files saved to network location
RH 9
Linked to three FM10 files plus TOC. Plus a Preface written in RH and not linked
  Webhelp default output
  Proj saved to C:\Projects\Imp_ByRef_from_Ydrv\!SSL!\WebHelp\index.htm
PC
  System 7
Plenty of disk space and memory
Not sure what other info would be helpful.
I seem to be able to Right mouse > Update file OK for individual files. BUT when I Update all I get a crash within a couple of minutes after it begins. More: after manually updating each section, I can successfully perform a Force Update All without crashing.

LOL, just a bit of humor.
When I saw the post message in my email, my eyes must have been still a bit blurry from just waking.
I thought you said:
No NASTY FM books being used.
Cheers... Rick

  • Acrobat Pro 8 - Linking files causes issue

We create projects that contain multiple PDFs (the number varies).  For each project, a table of contents (TOC) is created.  The bookmarks within the TOC are links to other PDFs.  The issue we've begun experiencing is that after linking to a file, when previewing the document (via clicking the Pages option), one or more pages appear blank.  Acrobat crashes at this point.  When opened, the linked file will open, but contains blank pages.  We then have to replace the pages with the source, which works fine.
This issue results in the process taking several times longer than it should.  The process the user uses is pasted below.  I was unable to find a similar issue via Google or searching the Adobe forums.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thank you.
Inserting Files into the Bookmark Tabs
ALWAYS START FROM THE TABLE OF CONTENTS (TOC)
    1. CTRL + SHIFT + D (delete all but 1 page of the TOC)
    2. CTRL + SHIFT + I (insert the pdf file associated with the tab)
    3. CTRL + SHIFT + D (delete the rest of the TOC – always #1)
    4. CTRL + SHIFT + S (Save as: select the pdf file you inserted)
    5. On the tab/Bookmark you're working on
    a. Right click – Left Click
    b. CTRL + C (to copy all the text in this Bookmark)
    c. CTRL + D (Opens Document Properties)
    d. Tab (the current title will become highlighted)
    e. CTRL + V (to paste the text you just copied)
    f. Press OK
    g. CTRL + S (save)
    6. While still on the tab/Bookmark you just added
    a. Click on the Pages tab (to the left)

  • File Crashing on Output - printing/PDF/other

Firstly - with any file that is repeatedly crashing make a backup of it Immediately!
    Option 1
Try to remove corruption using the Export/Save to IDML link to how to here
    Option 2
Determine how many pages in your document
Export or Print your document in halves, i.e., if it's 200 pages then export or print page 1-100 then page 101-200
Keep halving the document pages until you find the problem pages, i.e., 1-100 crashes then try 1-50 and 51-100, then 1-25 and 26-50 etc. until you've found the page(s) that are crashing
When you've narrowed it down to a single page or multiple pages try to find out what is causing it to crash you can do this by:
Move half the items on the page to the Pasteboard (do not delete them) and try to export again, if it crashes then move more items to the pasteboard and so on until you find the culprit(s)
Recreate the object(s), i.e., if a particular image is causing it to crash, then don't duplicate that frame. You should use File>Place and replace the image within the layout in a new graphic frame.
    Images
If the file still crashes then you should resave the image as a complete new file name and different file extension, if it's PSD then save as TIFF or vice versa.
(Note some special file formats like DCS or EPS and PDF should not be opened in Photoshop if they contain vector elements - if you don't know if they do or do not please do not open them in Photoshop)
    Text Frames
Copy that text and Place it in a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit to strip all the formatting.
Create a new Text Frame and reimport the text by using File>Import or using Copy and Paste
Restyle the text to your liking
Any suggestions, edits or other workflows for files that won't output via print or other method, or will not export using File>Export are thoroughly welcome.

    Thanks for posting this Eugene.
An additional comment about "fixing" problem text:
I often have very good luck replacing text that is causing file crashes using InDesign Tagged Text, which will preserve the formatting. To export tagged text you must have some sort of active text cursor, either a selection, or just a flashing cursor in the story. With an active cursor InDesign Tagged Text will become an option in the "type" dropdown when you select File > Export...
If you have selected some text, only the selection will be exported. A flashing cursor with no text selected will export the entire story, even if it is threaded across many pages. You will have two options after choosing tagged text and pressing OK in the dialog, abbreviated or verbose, and it doesn't seem to matter which you choose, other than a small  difference in the size of the text file that is saved. To use the tagged text file you place it, in the same way you would place a Word file or other text file, but ID will interpret the internal tagging and bring it in formatted.
I will often replace an entire story this way, but on occasion I've also found it works well to export either the entire story, or just a selection of a section I've identified as a problem, then place the tagged text file on the pasteboard. From there I will copy the text I need and paste into position replacing a problem paragraph or two. This seems to give an added layer of cleanup without losing the formatting.
I actually developed this technique a few years ago working on a file that was causing problems for Eugene, but I'm not sure he remembers.

  • After effects and premiere linked file problems

Premiere won't open after effects linked files, keeps crashing. (I haven't moved the files)
When premiere opens all the ae files are offline, I try to re-link them and premiere crashes everytime.
I have tried importig the ae files into pp without dynamic link, still crashing.
I am new to premiere from fcp.
    Using imac, 10.7.5, 16gb, i7.

Are you getting an error message? If not, what is the last thing that the startup screen says?
It may be a problem with something in the preferences folder being corrupt. Try deleting the entire preferences folder and restarting. See this page for the location of the preferences folder.
It also may be that you have something running in your admin account that is blocking a port that is needed for internal communication for After Effects and Premiere Pro. See this page for more detail about that possibility.

  • ID CS4 Anti-Alias problems with Linked files

All the linked files i have put into Indesign CS 4 whether they are PSD, Tiff, layered or flat have shown up slightly pixelated. When i print the same file from its native program (in this case Photoshop CS4) the files print clean and crisp and the text and artwork have clean edges but when i link the file into an Indesign CS4 doc and then print it off, the file comes out fairly clean but there are jagged lines on the text and art.

    4GB Ram
2X 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon
    250GB HD

I now understand your question and yes in the graphics tab in my Indesign print settings I have it set to send all data. I exported the indesign file as a high res PDF and the output on the printer was the same. I don't believe its a printer setting because when i switch my display performace from typical to high-res the text and art from the linked file look pixalated. On the layered psd file the text files are not converted and yet when displayed through ID CS4 the text looks fuzzy and slightly pixalated.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Unable to open linked files in new CS3 install

One of my clients just purchased a new PC (Dell Inspiron 537S) with Windows Vista Home Premium to replace his old Inspiron 530 (also running Vista HP). After installing CS3 Design Studio and attaching an external drive loaded with his file archive, all of his Illustrator files which include links load with the following error:
"An error occurred trying to read the linked file "file.xxx". Choose Repair to locate the missing file, Replace to select another file or Ignore to leave the link unchanged."
This shouldn't be unusual, if the path to a linked file has changed, you'd need to point the link to the new path, but clicking Repair or Replace and browsing to the linked file (which invarably is in the same directory as the .ai file, and is usually a .psd which opens just fine in Photoshop) just cycles back to the same error message, ad infinitum. After about 30 tries, I got one of the links to load correctly, resaved the document, thinking that would repair it, but when I opened it again, got the error.
These files were created on multiple computers, and none of the other computers (all with CS3) have ever had any trouble opening them. This despite the drive letter on the external drive being unstable on the old system (would often be J:, K: or L:, and images always worked).
Any new .ai files we create on this file which have links all work fine.
Manually replacing the links in a file is not an option for two reasons:
    1. There are thousands of .ai files in this archive, and re-linking images in them will take weeks.
    2. It simply doesn't work. I tried ignoring the error on one file to load it, and re-linking the .psd backgrounds to re-save it, and the images still didn't load after re-linking them.
I have already tried doing a factory-restore of the system and reinstalling CS3, making sure that there were no errors in the install. What else might cause this behavior, and how can I resolve it?

What else might cause this behavior, and how can I resolve it?
Outdated permissions on the files from your old computer. Right-click, Properties --> Security --> Advanced, disable Inherit settings from parent folders, chose to copy. After that, delete outdated security keys and assign current ones. You may even need to go so fart as to Take Ownership of some files to correctly restore the new system's default security settings.

  • Can I open .ai file w/ text editor and edit linked file path?

I want to relink a placed file in a lot of illustrator files to a new file with a different name. I've tried setting up various actions but it is not doing what I need. If I open the file in a text editor such as Notepad++ or Text Wrangler, I can find the linked file path in two places, if I edit this path and save the file (still with .ai extension) I thought the link would change, but when I reopen the file, it does not change. Any ideas?
If I make an action to relink a file, the action will only place a new file but not replace the old one. I also can't get it to place into a specific layer.
    Any ideas?

CSS files are plain text with no links, so what you see is all there is.
In order to apply CSS to HTML, you need a <link> tag in your HTML.
If you install the Web Developer Extension from the Firefox add-ons site, there is a handy "Edit CSS" sidebar that lets you play with style rules and see the effects live. Note that this pane is not saved, so if you switch tabs, you lose your changes. Make sure to copy out any changes you want to remember.

  • Can you place linked files into Photoshop CS4?

If you place a .psd or .tif file into an InDesign file, you are alerted if any changes are made to that file (as I'm sure most of you know). Is there any way to do this within Photoshop? I have several dozen carpet sample .tif files that are to be used in several hundred "montage" type "carpet sample groups" layered .psd files that will then be saved as images for the web (does that make sense?). Is there any way to do this so that if there's a change in the original .tif file it will automatically change any .psd file in which it's being used? I know the easiest way to do this is in InDesign, but I have two problems: 1) the conversion from InDesign to a web image is laborious, and 2) the person doing the work does not know InDesign at all. I can show him how to use it, but that's a small part of the battle.
Any suggestions? I'm using CS4 for Windows.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

Thanks for your comments. The problem arises because we have to create that intermediate Photoshop step.
We have, say, a dozen individual carpet swatches that are used to create hundreds of combinations (which are all separate layered .psd files). If one swatch changes (color, for example), then we have to open every .psd file in which that swatch appears and change it (or place the changed one). I'd love to be able to change the original and have it update every layered file in which it appears, just like InDesign does with placed/linked files.
    Maybe there's a plug-in (wishful thinking)?
Also, I'd really like to have it changed in the web development end of things, but we're working with a company that is (obviously) using templates and we can only give them single images, hence the need to create the intermediate Photoshop files.

  • How to make the images show up on a linked file in Muse?

I am wondering how to get my images to show up on the linked files in Muse.  Basically, in Muse, I have a page that links to other pages I designed in Dreamweaver.  I put the images in the image folder and when I upload the site, the page links to the Dreamweaver page ok but the images are missing.  This is a vital part of the site.  Any suggestions?

If you made the pages with Dreamweaver then they should be on your system some place and you could make a "dreamweaver" folder inside your Muse site and upload the pages to that folder using the upload files option... see this thread talks about sound files but almost any file can be imported to muse
I need a recommendation for a slick way to embed audio
    Another option is to link across to an online resource using the built in muse html editor but that has pit falls because once you link yourself outside the site you also lose some control of the content;
For an example of this have a look at an old demo page I made http://chec-garry2.businesscatalyst.com/index.html
When you click on the Brahminy Kite bird you are looking at what used to be called an Iframe but the problem of control is highlighted when you click the Blue Wren and sometimes get pop up adds… I could import the Blue Wren page into my Muse site to fix this issue and in your case that’s a good option but I didn’t because I don’t have copyright over that pages contents and didn’t want to steal someone else’s work.
p.s. if you have got a demo of the  website/ pages online someplace that would help us see your problem.

  • Is there a way for photoshop to AUTO UPDATE all linked files after modified?

Using the new Photoshop 2014 (version).
This is a very frustrating task for anyone using a lot of linked files.
As a web developer, I may have 50 files that contain one linked element.  If I go edit that element, I then have to find the layer on each and every file it's contained in and click "Update Modified Content".  There HAS to be an easier way.  I really hope I'm missing something here.
Thanks to everyone looking to help.

OK. Now I see what you meant.
And you correctly understand workaround instruction. The problem is it does not work and I don't know why.
I'm not so familiar with Automator and indeed seldom use it except for a simple services wrapper under 10.6. So I don't know of any workflows off the shelf which use "Ask for Confirmation" action. But it is easy to create a workflow that, for instance, consists of "Ask for Confirmation" action only and is set to receive no input or input from Finder or input from other application and test to see if it gets keyboard focus. As far as I can tell, this action obtains keyboard focus automatically.
Here's another workaround you may try. Replace the "Ask for Confirmation" action with a "Run AppleScript" action with the following contents. This will show similar dialogue to let you choose two options.
    on run {input, parameters}
        tell application "Finder"
            activate
display dialog "Are you sure?" with title "Permanently delete"
        end tell
        return input
    end run
The workflow will look like this.

Safari will no longer open. It just goes back to my desktop.  When I right click on the safari icon in my dashboard it says it is open.  I was using firefox until I could find a fix for safari.  I made the mistake of changing my default search to firebox later for convenience and now I can't open my system preference or many safari or apple linked files. Some of my emails from trusted sites won't open and does the same thing.
I upgraded my original system from 10.4.11 to I believe 10.6. something about a year or so ago.  I thought about re installing my safari app but when I go to open anything connected to safari my screen goes back to the desktop.  I cant open any files that I have on my desktop that I set up through safari, like my banking program. Prior to changing system preference to safari default I was able to open those files and now I can't get into change it back.  Can you guide me through this?
    Thanks,

Try running the 10.6.8 combo update.
    10.6.8 Combo Updater
    System Preferences or Safari Preferences?
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

A link file is a file that points to another file, kind of like an alias, except the link file points to a certain location whereas an alias will follow a file around. Although some links are important it is also possible it isn't and since the files have been moved around the links are broken. Somebody else may correct me but I'm guessing you can't repair those unless you know the files to which they were pointing. This would probably be something the OS or an applications set up rather than you so you can't really do it yourself (easily). The actually link files themselves are not critical but maybe what they do is.

  • How to manage linked files with multiple designers?

    Hi,
I work at a small company with multiple designers (5 of us) where 3 of us work remotely. We use dropbox to manage our files so that everyone has access--we keep client files in specific folders and stock media in a shared folder.
Currently whenever we open a file that's been edited by someone else, we have to go in and individually relink the files. Some would prefer to embed the files, however this can increase filesize by 60-400mb. Our current files total in at around 500gb, so I don't think that's a viable option.
4 of us are on Macs, 1 on Windows. 1 has CS5, 3 have CS6 and one has CC.
    My question is this:
If we all have the same path to dropbox (or the same path to the file, either way) will Illustrator be able to automatically find the files?
    Eg. X:/Dropbox/...
If so, will it work cross platform?
I know InDesign has a better link management system, is there a good plugin that would help with this?
I'm going to continue to do my own research and testing, but I thought I'd consult those more knowledgeable than me.
    Thank you!

Thanks for your response. Currently, dropbox works so that it syncs online but also is stored locally on your hard drive (not like a network drive). So one person could have a different path to the dropbox folder than the other. As for the second part, that would be about the same as embedding it in the file as far as general disk space usage. We use many of the same stock photos in multiple files, so keeping them in the same location reduces the amount of space used. It wouldn't be a huge problem if illustrator used relative paths instead of absolute paths, but alas.
I was forgetting that Mac OS doesn't use drive letters, so there probably won't be a way for illustrator to read things as the same path cross-platform...
I'm still wondering if there are any good plug-ins which help find broken links.
I found this: http://techblog.willshouse.com/2011/01/16/adobe-illustrator-linked-files-fix/ which might be helpful, but I'm wondering if there's a better solution.
