RH7 Crashing

I have experienced a problem in the last 2 days and don't see
a topic on this particular issue.
I am using RH7 in the Technical Suite Communications. I have
created an RH7 project and worked on it primarily while in the
clients office. Last night while flying I was working on the
project and it crashed twice. So I just started saving more
frequently. Today, I was in the client's office and had no issues.
Now I'm back in the hotel and it crashed after about an hour's
worth of work.
The project I'm working on is on my local laptop, always has
been. So I'm confused, it's obviously not an internet connection as
I had none on the airplane, in the office I have worked on it both
hard wired to internet and wireless, and in the hotel wireless
internet on.
This laptop has both RH5 and RH7 on it, but I am using only
RH7.
On the plane, only RH7 was open. In the office, I had
outlook, rh7, several ie browsers, and snagit. In the hotel, I have
2 browsers and rh7 open.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to start
troubleshooting, I'm all ears, because I cannot find a common
thread except that I was out of the office and off network when the
crash occurs. But since the project is local to the laptop beiong
on the network shouldn't have any impact that i can see.

MeWrite, you should review all the options selected for when

Harvey, I have already started an excel spreadsheet to figure
out what the commonality might be. Apparently, unbeknownst (sp?) to
me, 2 other colleagues of mine are also experiencing hangups or
crashing. After the second crash, I started to look for a common
theme, however, my 2 colleagues, were taking the same approach as
Moonlion2 and just figured it was the program and putting up with
it and not paying attention as to what was going on nor what the
enviornment was when the crashes occurred. Since I've been a long
time user of RH I knew better and am looking to see what the
possible issues are that would be the cause of the crash. So far,
unplugged is the only common thread, although based on the article
link you sent earlier, I'm not ruling out the install issue just
yet.
Ah, ha...got it to occur again less than 30 minutes this
time. I am on battery, wireless on, 3 ie windows open, off network,
not in office. I got screen shots of the 3 error messages. Does
anyone know how I can attach a screen shot to show the error
messages? The last 2 seem to refer specifically to RH.
Before I posted I plugged the laptop in. Been working in RH
for about another 30 minutes. Was about to say No crash, no error
messages, but no sooner did I type that statement and flip back to
RH when it came crashing down. The error messages are long so I'd
like to attach the screen shots. And now I know how to duplicate
the error, so if someone needs more info or I can't attach screen
shots, let me know and I can type in the error codes.

Hi Peter, thanks for your input.
I eventually found out what was causing this, but no idea why it should be an issue. The clue was in the error message: "...faulting module IMAGEAPI.dll..." - so I figured it was something to do with an image.
This wasn't happening on the sample projects only on the projects that I created myself. These projects all share a common property, and that is that  the topic template contains a placeholder graphic that will (in the individual topics) be a link to another topic. In order to make life easy for myself, I added the placeholder to the template and then attached a hyperlink to '#' to it. It was that that caused the problem - if I remove the dummy '#' from the picture the problem goes away.
It doesn't explain what the issue was, but it fixes it - even though I lose the convenience of having a ready-made hyperlink on all my new graphics.
    Cheers
    J.

  • RH7 Crashes When Adding/Renaming Folders

I am using RH 7.02.001 on WinXP (via the TCS, if that is relevant).
I think what I'm looking for is some perspective on migrating a single project to a collection of merged projects.
I have a fairly large HTML project (1500 topics in 100 or so folders, 2000 images) which I've been working with since 2003 in various versions of RH. I use conditional build tags quite a bit, and output WebHelp (primary) and a number of Printed Documentation builds.
The project has grown a bit since inception, but not by much.  It is mostly in maintenance mode.
It has generally been fairly easy to work with over the years, but in the past few months, it has started to crash every time I try to create a new folder or rename a folder via the Project Manager.
I have rebuilt the .cpd file, but that has not helped.  The fact that this project behaved itself up until recently makes me wonder where the problem lies.
I think I'm at the point where I have to decide whether to split the project up and used a merged approach, or whether upgrading to RH8 (or the next patch level of RH7) will solve this problem. Or adding RAM.
I'd rather not convert this to a merged solution for several reasons:
    - the TOC structure will have to be re-evaluated
    - broken links will need to be repaired
    - conditional builds, SSLs, etc., will need to be addressed
    - will the new structure play nicely with Subversion?
    - having 1 project makes it easier to apply certain global changes more quickly (e.g. changing headers/footers via a single .htt, applying a CSS change)
    - need to train the team on working with the merged approach
I do recognize that the merged solution may have benefits that justify the migration cost, but beyond the obvious one of "smaller projects are easier to work with and don't crash", I'm not sure what they are.
    I guess my questions are:
    - Is relief available that will enable me to stick with the single project?
    - Are there other pitfalls to a merged project migration?
    - Are there other benefits of such a migration?
    Thanks,
    Dave

One possible cause here is having too many levels of sub folders under the project. Ideally you shouldn't have more than one level of sub folders under your project as having too long a path can cause crashes....
While I generally agree that you don't want super long path names, I've never heard of anyone recommending only a single level of folders. I used to have lots of nested folders and didn't have issues.

  • RH7 crashes on create Project

I have scanned existing discussions and found some similarities, but not exact problems.  if I missed the right post, i apologize for the new post in advance.
I have just installed RH7 onto my pc.  Everything appears to work well, I can edit htm files, But, when I attempt to create a new project or open an existing one.  When I attempt to create a new project, it begins to build then i receive the lovely application has encountered a problem and needs to close.  send report, results nothing.  When I attempt to open existing I receive RoboHelp was unable to load database.  One post said to deleate the xpj from the folder then try to re-opent the project, there is no xpj in the folder, and there are no hidden files or folders.
As a trial, I download the trial RH8, works great.  my boss will not upgrade yet because I have not been able to reach tech support for a week now, and the hold music is getting old.  anyway.
I attempted to upgrade the RH7 project into RH8 and it could not upgrade a some files.  I then extract HTML to source, then I was able to access the complete source of the project and compile into a new chm.  RH7 is still not able to open a exttracted source project.
I have read some forums that refer to RH7 requiring MS Word.  I know that RHx5 requires it, which we have upgraded from X5 to RH7. I was wondering if this could be a culprit since my company now only uses OpenOffice.  The last time this app was used was a few years ago when we did run MS Office.
    Thanks for any assistance.

    Hi there
You posted this in the RoboHelp HTML forum category. Are you using RoboHelp HTML? If so, word is really moot unless you are planning on creating a printed output (Word or PDF). Now if you are using RoboHelp for Word, there could be huge issues by not having Word installed.

  • Duplicate Topic, Then Rename causes RH7 Crash ?

I am able to duplicate a topic and save the default.  The file name is taken from the original Topic Title and preceeded with 'Copy_of'_".  I can right click and select Rename and change the name of the file and save.  I can change the 'Topic Title' in the new file by editing in 'Properties'.   However, when I select 'Save', RoboHelp crashes ("RoboHelp 7 has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Please close the pgm.") .  This crash happens in a couple of different sequences involving the duplication of topics.  Note that the new file exists, but the crash seems to involve only the renaming of the Topic Title not the filename.  I've deleted the .xpj and .cpd and restarted.

    Hi there
An observation from the sidelines here. I can't help but to notice that in the workflow you listed said you duplicate, then you later elect to rename?
I'm curious as to why you would follow that procedure?
Please bear with me. I do the duplicate hokey pokey all the time and I've never seen a crash occur from duplication. But my process varies a bit from yours. It seems that the first thing that happens when you duplicate a topic is that RoboHelp presents you with a dialog allowing you to choose the new file name and topic title. Since the dialog is already in my face, I just change it right then and there. But from what you are stating, you are clicking OK to dismiss the dialog, then calling it back up again to make the change? What is preventing you from just entering what you want right there on the dialog before you commit?
    Cheers.. Rick

  • RoboHelp 7 crashes in Windows Vista

RH7 crashes consistently in Windows Vista, but it never used to. It always crashes at the same point.
    To replicate the error:
    1. I open the project. RH7 connects to RoboSource and attempts to grab the latest version.
    2. RH7 starts chugging away and then RH7 closes unexpectedly.
I've already tried uninstalling/installing RH7 and RoboSource from scratch.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

  • "Lost" topics

RH7 crashed not long after I imported several topics into a
    project.
When I reopen, the imported topics do not appear on the topic
list, no matter which folder I select on the toolbar. However, when
I tried re-importing, RH7 sees the original files still existing
and asked if I wanted to copy over the existing files. When I look
in the project folder, I can see the topic .htm files and open them
    in Firefox.
Long story short: how do I get RH to "re-see" these topics
    within RH?

    Some additional info:
I've tried using the "Find Topic" tool, but it fails to see
    them.
The Topic List appears to only be showing topics that were
linked to the TOC prior to the import. After importing, I'd
modified the TOC to include the new topics and had begun applying
new formatting to them, saving as I went.
For some reason, the TOC has reverted to the one prior to the
import. I don't think the import caused the crash, as I'd been
working for at least a half hour or more after the import before
    the crash.
Now, the Topics List doesn't appear to show any topic that
isn't on the TOC, and I can't find any way to "refresh" or
otherwise get the Topic List to show everything.
If anyone can tell me how to get these to reappear, I'd be
grateful! My frustration and tolerance level with RH is about at
its end. The problems and issues I'm encountering are getting
ridiculous, and losing 2 hours' worth of formatting work on saved
topic files (which I can see in Windows Explorer (with the new
formatting) and which RH detects when attempting to re-import) only
for RH crash and then be unable to find them is inexcusable.

  • RH8 crashes on converting RH7 project...

...please bear with me, this is long: I've successfully converted four significant RoboHelp 7 projects to RoboHelp 8 -- however, I have one that continuously, repeatedly crashes RoboHelp: the conversion itself crashes (maybe 2/3 of the way through), but opens up the project on the next execution of RH8; if I attempt to save changes in most topics, RH8 crashes. If I attempt to preview most topics, RH8 crashes. If I attempt to update DHTML Effects, RH8 crashes.
I can compile (to either WebHelp or FlashHelp), but my "Normal" template (a stub) is replicated at the top of each and every topic in the compiled system. I've gone through the usual hoops (I've been around long enough), including deleting the CPD file, even the baggage, index, TOC and other configuration/parameter files...to no avail. I created a new, blank project and imported one file. RH8 crashed.
However, I can go back and open up any of the other converted systems and they run like clockwork, without a hitch.
The Vista Problem Report listed the crash as:

At one point, before I uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Office 2008 on a long shot (try that some time: it's not a trivial task...), I'd received a debug message something like "yada-yada was activated while yad-yada was activated before yada-yada was deactivated" -- I Googled that, and the resolutions were horrific and I'm trying to forget.
After a full work week of  grubbing around, I found the solution to RH8 crashing on save: some topics could be individually saved, most not. I did some file diffs and discovered that a table at the very top of each topic was variously saved by RH7 as either:
    <table x-use-null-cells style="width: 100%; x-cell-content-align: Center; border-right-style: Groove; border-right-width: ;
                                    border-bottom-style: Groove; border-bottom-width: ; border-spacing: 0px;
                                    border-spacing: 0px;" cellspacing=0 width=100%>
    ...or...
    <table style="background-repeat: repeat; background-attachment: scroll;
                                    background-image: url('Graphics/paper1a.jpg'); border-right-style: Groove;
                                    border-bottom-style: Groove;" cellspacing="0" background="Graphics/paper1a.jpg" width="100%">
Topics with the first, crashed RH8. Always. Topics with the second were saved as expected.
OK, so that problem was solved (in a sense)....but, I still have the issue where my template (normal.htt -- which consists solely of a stubbed table as above and now corrected) gets inserted into the top of every published topic. For example:
The template ("Master Page") is a stub: "This is a stub."
In the generated output (local machine, no server/network, running Vista64), every topic begins with "This is a stub" -- even if I delete normal.htt...
I've submitted this as a bug, but would really appreciate any ideas. The first part, above, frazzled me no end--this part is driving me nuts. Again, all other projects have converted just fine and cause no issues.
    Thank you in advance...

Thanks to the help from Peter, this issue is resolved (and—depending on how you look at it—is two bugs in the conversion process).
    1.       For the “printing” of the stubbed text in the Master Page on each topic when output: “Template” pages in RH7 became “Master Pages” in RH8. A new RH8 Master Page contains a special body tag that prevents contained stub text from displaying in the output. Anything outside the special body tag displays on all output associated with the Master Page. In RH7 Templates, on the other hand, nothing would show/was supposed to show on output…getting the picture? <G>
So, fixing the RH7 converted Template with the RH8 code fixed that (everything from the RH7 Template was outside the special body tag). Peter alternatively suggested removing links to the Template in RH7, deleting it, then building a new Master Page in RH8 for new topics.
    2.       For the continuous crashing of RH8 and inability to save or preview certain topics: Throughout the years and various RoboHelp upgrades, the tables I had at the top of each topic to contain the topic title and summary text were variously started in the HTML as either “<table x-use-null-cells style=” or “<table style=”. RH7 was perfectly happy with either syntax.
RH8 is not at all happy with “<table x-use-null-cells style=”.
Any topic containing that string in the RH7 HTML would crash the project (indeed, crashed the conversion) when I attempted to save or preview the topic. With an external editor, I went though each of 300 topics and replaced all instances of “<table x-use-null-cells style=” with “<table style=” and the project is again 100%.
Again, thanks to Peter for the help in getting this figured out!

  • Opening a RH7 project in RH9 crashes RH9

I recently had to upgrade to RH9 because RH7 was not compatible with Windows 7. I have had a pretty hard time upgrading a RH7 project to RH9, but followed the instructions to open the HHP file instead of the XPJ and saying No when asked to use the XPJ file instead. This worked a charm with one project.
Now I am trying to open a different project the same way and RH9 crashes. No error message just my spinning cursor and when I click on the RH icon in my taskbar I get the windows message saying RH has stopped working.
I tried deleting (by renaming) the CPD file and that didn't work either.
Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Project is ~500 files and 23MB on disk
My machine is Win7 x64 quad core with 4GB of RAM and over 134 GB of free hard drive space.
I have a backup - project is in SVN subversion source control
If I load the XPJ I get the same crash behavior.
Just before the crash, at the bottom of RH screen it says:
    loading topics...
    Sorting Keywords...
    Ready --> then CRASH

  • Windows Explorer keeps crashing under Win 7 with RH7 and Source Control installed

This is an "informational" thread in case someone experiences the same problems. We installed RH7 on Windows 7 32-bit and accidentally, Robo Source Control was installed, too, although we do not use it. The latter loads three extensions into the shell that caused the Windows Explorer to crash on a regular basis ("Windows Explorer has stopped working"). After deinstallation of Robo Source, the problem seems to be resolved.

I would like to tell you that this problem is an issue with RH8, as well.

  • RoboHelp RH8 crashes when using RH7 environment file

I am just trying the RoboHelp 8 trial.
I created a new blank project.
I loaded an environment file that I use regularly in RH7 (attached as "authorgraphic_env2.txt" - just change the extension to .rhs). The environment appears, but all the tabs (the bits that stick out) are missing until I open a topic.
If I click on the Index or Glossary tab, after 5 seconds the tab disappears, and 15 seconds later, RH8 crashes, followed by the "shall I report this to Miscroft?" prompt. This has happened 4 times in a row. Repeatable fault.
    Error signature is:
    AppName: robohtml.exe AppVer: 8.0.0.203 ModName: toolkitpro1042vc80u.dll
    ModVer: 10.4.2.0 Offset: 001b2b92
    Any ideas, anyone?
(BTW, this system does not allow me to upload environment files with .rhs extension. This is daft! Please pass on...)

  • Output Crash RH7

I have opened old R6 RH in to RH7. Whenever I try to output
an updated RH6 in RH7 either a Webhelp or Word the system crashes
at the updating files stage (quite early on in the process). This
happens on all the projects I have opened so far. Has anyone any
ideas as where to look for resolving the problem.
I did manage to get a generated output when started a new RH7
project and imported just the HTML files from one project so it
would seen unlikely that there is a problem with the HTM files.
    Malcolm

Infact the novation software (automap) seems to have problems with logic X, but i don't think that this is the case because i tried other setups without the slmk2.  For example I've plugged the Volca's midi in from the Arturia Minibrute midi output and I've got the same problem. (without turning on the slmk2)
So, the problem exist indipendently from the connection.
The other software sequencer are :
Ableton live 9 on my mac (plugged on the midi output of the slmk2)
Cubase 5 and 7 on one of mine friend's pc  (plugged on a TC midi/audio interface)
    Thank you for the reply

For the past few days, I have been having problems creating
new folders in RH 7, Project Manager. Sometimes, it works just
fine, and I can add folders, drag topics into them, import into
    them, create new topics, whatever.
But then sometimes, the project manager just goes to white
and flashes at me for a while, then RH crashes. The only things I
can see in the PM pane are the triangular colored icons that
overlay folders / topic icons when they include conditional build
tags. No topic names, no folder names, just a column of these
    triangles.
When I come back into RH after the crash, most times there
are topics to reimport and / or relocate. I have rebuilt the cpd
file several times. Each time it seems to resolve the issue, but
eventually another crash comes along as I try to add a folder.
For the record, just updated to the new 7.02.001 a few
minutes ago, but RH just crashed again. 3GB RAM, more than 40GB
space available on hard drive. Nothing new on my PC that I can
    think of.
    Anyone else seeing this?

I'm just wondering if anyone has found a cause or solution of this issue?
I'm experiencing it too with one of my projects (currently, I'm on RH8.02.202 on Win7/64, but I've also experienced it in RH7 on WinXP/32, FWIW).
    Some other details:
My project is on my C:\ drive.
The folder names are all comprised solely of alphanumerics and underscores.
I've deleted both the PSS and CPD files without any noticeable positive effect.
Since I've been on RH8, the project is set to rebuild the .cpd cache upon opening, but I've also tried deleting it (this might be redundant, but I figured the RH "rebuild" might be different from generating a brand new one).
After I force RH to close, the folder is there when I reopen the project, and the folder behaves normally.
The project resides in the standard "My RoboHelp Projects" folder.
The problem seems to be isolated to this project, which is my largest (~2065 topics in ~85 folders)
I'm at the point where I just automatically force RH to close after I create a folder rather than waiting to for the application to become "officially" non-responsive.
Are there any other files I might try deleting or examining?  I've poked around in the .xpj, .fpj, and .hhp files, but I don't see anything odd. I compared my old .pss with the new one RH created, and they were identical.
    Thanks!
    Dave
