RH7: PDF generation of help project bypassing Word

All,
I have a user who is trying out the trial of RoboHelp 7 and
wants to know when generating PDF output, is there a way to bypass
creating a Word document and go straight to the PDF. Is Word still
utilized this way for Printed Documentation no matter if a PDF is
made or not?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

It would seem logical that Adobe will have export to
Framemaker on their plans for future releases but that doesn't help
right now.
If the content is in FrameMaker, or could be, then perhaps
the Technical Communication Suite holds an alternative solution.
That can output to the version of RH7 that comes with it. When
FrameMaker is later updated, I understand it is a simple click to
update the RH7 project.
The only other possibility, and it seems unlikely, is to
hammer the customer a bit more on their objections to Word. They
say "because in our experience, Word becomes unstable after a
certain size is reached (sometimes even <100 pages if there are
a lot of graphics and screenshots). Word pagination is one of the
first to go. I'm afraid that it would be difficult or impossible to
PDF long documents"
Word really should not be unstable at that level and it is
not my experience, even with many screenshots. Whenever I see
comments like that, I do wonder if some more investigation would
solve the problem. I always want to get my hands on the project at
that point and try to make it fall over. Sometimes the cause can be
found. Often it is just the template used.

    Hi olivias,
It sounds like there may be some confusion on your system about what application should be associated with PDF files. You can reset filename associations by following the steps in these articles (depending on your operating system):

    Hi Techies,
We are generating PDFs from Oracle Reports 3.0
The PDF generation is fine in some datbases.
But in some database, when the records are more, during PDF

Can any one please clarify whether the error is due to memory

Do note that the reports are running fine, when the report has

Why Acrobat x professional is changing the text formatting specifically the font family  and the font size of the text in my pdf on exporting it to Microsoft word file format ?How should i stop Acrobat x professional from doing that so that i get an exactly same word file on exporting it from its pdf counterpart?

I was testing the preciseness & efficiency of Adobe acrobat x professional's doc conversion capabilities. As i have to take a document editing project in future which is going to need lot of pdf to word and vice versa conversions . What I did was I created a test word document converted into a pdf using a pdf maker in my word 2007 , Acrobat did convert the document from word to pdf keeping everything in the source file intact , However when i tried the other way round and attempted to convert the same pdf to word 2007 file format I lost my formatting ?So the font that I used to create the pdf are the ones taken from word 2007 which i believe is using the fonts that are installed in my computer. Any suggestions on how to preserve the formatting of the document after converting it from pdf to word file format?

  • APEX 4.1 - APACHE FOP PDF generation problem.

    Hi all,
I'm having problem with PDF generation using APACH FOP on OC4J.
When I test my print server as described here:
    http://marcsewtz.blogspot.com/2008/06/heres-another-posting-on-pdf-printing.html
everything works without problem. But when I upload my Layout to APEX and try to generate PDF from apex I'm getting error:

But it doesn't explain my case as it's crashing even when I generate empty pdf(no data so no special characters, only empty XML file with no data should be sent to print server)
Is there any way to see what xml is sent do print server for processing? That could eventually show where is a problem.

My mistake, there was really an "&" character in my template. now when I replaced it with %26 it works.
However I would be still interested if there is a way to see what data is APEX engine sending to print server cause it will help me to find this kind of errors.

  • Very slow PDF generation when conditional text is hidden in FM 9.0

I am working on 96-page chapter of a larger book. A 7-page section of the chapter needs to be hidden until the next release, so I hid it with conditional text. After doing this, the "Save as PDF" printing process goes from taking 6-7 seconds to taking several minutes. If I unhide the conditional text in the same session, printing is very quick again.
I have no problem generating very PDF files with the PDF printer in other applications (Word, PowerPoint). The issue is specific to FrameMaker and the use of conditional text. What might be causing this?
I am using FrameMaker 9.0p255 and Distiller 9.0.
    - Chris

    Hi Jeff,
These were good suggestions to try. Saving the document first has no effect on PDF generation.
However, I did find that printing to the Adobe PDF printer remains fast when the conditional text is hidden. That's quite an interesting finding! I did also notice that these two methods of PDF generation aren't identical:
"Save as PDF" opens an Adobe Distiller window, while printing to the Adobe PDF printer opens a different "Creating Adobe PDF" progress box (looks like it's from the printer driver itself).
"Save as PDF" generates a 1188k PDF file, while printing to the Adobe PDF printer generates a 1049k PDF file.
"Save as PDF" defaults to placing the PDF in FrameMaker's working directory, while printing to the Adobe PDF printer defaults to saving to the last place to saved a printed PDF file (awkward when working with multiple directories, as I often do).
When I do a "Save as PDF", FrameMaker does still spool to the PDF printer. It is this spooling that takes a long time. Once spooling is complete, then the Distiller window opens and the PDF is created very quickly.
I would still like to get "Save as PDF" working since it knows where to place the PDF file. No solution to the runtime yet, but at least there is progress...

  • How to convert a PDF file into a full editable WORD file?

    Hi,
I tried to convert a pdf file into word but it is not fully editable. I can edit the title from the main page and that's it. The rest of the word document is saved as image. I tried editing teh pdf file but that one is not working either.
Please help on how to convert a PDF file into a full editable WORD file.
    Thank you

Not all PDF files are created equal.  When a PDF file is created with Adobe Tools it is usually "tagged" with information about the fonts the images, the layout etc...    This way when the PDF is saved to a new format like PPT or DOC then the results are usually usable.  However, if you have a PDF file that was not tagged for some reason then run the Accessibility tools on the PDF to acquire some basic tagging.  This may get you a better result.  Also if you have a PDF that is an image, then you may want to run OCR on it.

  • PDF generation in VC

    Hi everybody,
I need to develop a wizard-like application which ends generating a pdf non-interactive form (i.e. list of class students).
I would like to use as less coding as possible, so I'm using Visual Composer for the selection steps.
However the last step should provide the pdf generation and I actually don't know how to integrate these two technologies.
I know that WDP java provides Adobe Forms natively, but WDP integration with VC is somewhat hard and uncertain, as other sdn posts show, especially when flex is used.
Can anyone provide help, experiences or example with regard to pdf generation with Visual Composer?
    Thanks

  • CFDOCUMENT PDF generation peformance on Linux running CF server 8 or 9 is horrible

Can anyone help me understand how I can get the <cfdocument> tag to generate PDFs in reasonable time (and without throwing timeout errors) when running on CF 8 on Linux? Running on CF 9 doesn't make a difference, either. I can run the same code that generates a PDF on a Win 7 system and it completes the 1-2 page PDF in seconds.  Do the same thing in CF8/9 on Linux and it takes so long (minutes) and then throws a timeout error. When we tried using Railo instead of CF8/9 it ran fine as well.

Our apps guy figured out the problem after googling the error log message. To put this in context, the deployed app is running in a Tomcat container on Linux.
The root cause is Java's AWT thinking there should be an Xserver available to talk to.  Somehow in the code interactions during the PDF generation,  calls are made to an Xserver that doesn't exist, with an absurdly long  timeout.  Adding the line "-Djava.awt.headless=true" to the catalina.sh  script has solved the issue.
    Hope this helps others!

  • Images in my FrameMaker 10-sourced Robohelp Web Help project are turning out as blank JPEGS appearing as blank spaces in the final output. How can I fix this?

I'm attempting to create online help sourced from a FrameMaker 10 book using Robohelp 9 and Web Help (primary layout).
The text is interspersed with numeorus small icons which, in the FrameMaker documents, are .bmp images inserted into anchored frames in the lines of text.
Most of these icons were imported by reference into the FrameMaker book's chapters. Some were copied from another FrameMaker book and pasted into the present book.
Many of these images are turning out blank in the finished Help project.
Robohelp seems to convert these images into JPEGS.
In the source FrameMaker book, the images which appear OK in the Help project have Object Properties including: Facets: FrameVector   JPEG ... Referenced File: No File
The images which appear blank have different object properties there: Facets: DIB ... Referenced File: (address of the image's source file)
How can I fix this and make all of the images appear in the Online Help?

Sorry, Jeff. I missed the key word in your instructions. Well, I did the import and still no luck. I'm getting the exact same results with the same images. (In some cases, I'm even getting hidden conditional text from the FM document body showing up in the image's frame instead of the image! See below.) This is bizarre behavior, but it's not new with the import. It is happening both in the linked and imported WebHelp with the same exact images. (Just another piece to complicate the puzzle.) So we have some jpeg images that are blank, and a few that are glitchy. From what I can tell, the commonality, besides the fact that all these new images are in jpeg format instead of gif format, is that all the blank and glitchy images are in a text inset. I'm beginning to think maybe RH just doesn't support text insets at all.
Arnis, I'll have to ask my colleague how she created the images next week when she's back from vacation. I have no clue if there are any differences between the jpegs and why some are showing up correctly. What do you mean by "compression type or level?" Are you asking about the resolution (high, medium, low) she chose when saving the images, or which program she used to do the screen capture and editing? (We have Adobe Photoshop CS5 and FM 11).
My next step is to copy-paste all the content from the text insets into my FM document (in the book I am linking) and re-render to see if that solves the problem. It will make single-sourcing impossible because I'll have to copy-paste the new content and images my colleague creates into my document each time we do an update, but oh well.
Here is an example of a glitchy image in RH:
And here is what it looks like in FM:
    So bizarre!

  • How can I perform the conversion of pdf files in Cyrillic script to Word files in Cyrillic script. The pdf file is too small for me to read right now. Julyan Watts

How can I perform the conversion of .pdf files in Cyrillic script to Word files in Cyrillic script. The .pdf file is too small for me to read without a magnifying glass, and the document is more than one thousand pages.

This answer was not helpful. First of all, I could not find "tech specs"
anywhere on the Acrobat 11 homepage. And secondly I purchased this software
for the specific purpose of converting .pdf files to Word. It was only
after I had completed the purchase that I learnt that Acrobat does not
permit the conversion of .pdf files in Cyrillic to Word files  in Cyrillic.
I feel that Acrobat should have provided this crucial information before I
allowed my credit card to be debited. That is why I  am now asking for my
money back. But thanks for your attempt to solve my problem, even if it was
    not successful.

  • How can I speed up PDF generation?

I am working on 2 manuals in Frame 10, unstructured. I have installed all the latest FM patches. The smaller manual is 270 pages with 200 graphics inserted by reference. It takes 2.5 hours to "Save as PDF." The larger manual is 500 pages, 250 graphics and takes 3 hours to "Save as PDF".
I have converted graphics to smaller .jpg files. I have freed up as much space on my PC as possible - it has 4GB memory and 300 GB hard drive space available, dual processor with i3 chip. I delete Temp files and reboot before creating PDF.
If I turn off graphics (Esc+v+v), the PDF is created in just a few minutes.
What else can I do to produce a complete PDF with graphics in a reasonable amount of time?

I am a lone writer working on a single PC. No network drives. I open all files in the book before creating PDF.
Many of the graphics are product photos - how to assemble, etc. I was provided with .psd and .jpg versions. Originally inserted the .psd ones, but then consultant advised us to use the .jpg instead. PDF generation is extremely long either way. Also had numerous huge .tif files that I saved to much smaller .jpg.
Manuals will be localized and printed. What type of graphics are advised in this case - for good print quality and efficient PDF generation?

Are the Frame files and/or the imported objects coming from network servers? If so, you might get a speed up by saving to manual to the local machine prior to printing, and printing to PostScript, where the .ps file is on the local machine. Then Distill separately (if you have the full Acrobat product). Distilling separately* at least frees up Frame for that part of the rendering. I have converted graphics to smaller .jpg files. From what? And I wouldn't have bet that using JPEG would help. The files may be smaller, but they still need to be filtered for export to Ps or PDF, and if they are raster, they may be subject to further processing during PDF generation based on the subsampling specified. You might try sending the objects as EPS (which requires minimal processing into Ps), and you might try making sure that raster images are already at the desired dpi, and require no further downsampling in the rendering flow.
