your studentYou should configure automatic startup/shutdown procedure for Linux OS manually by your own. The following article may be useful for you to easy understand and implement that procedure:
[Automatically StartUp and Shutdown an Oracle Database in Linux OS|http://kamranagayev.wordpress.com/2008/12/22/automatically-startup-and-shutdown-database-in-linux-os/]
P.S. Additionaly I want to emphasize that it would be good to make the subject of your post more meaningful

Benefits in oracle 10.2.0.3 RHEL 4 over oracle 9.2.0.8
Dear Team,
we are currently changing the database box for one of our customer database
i seek your assistance for the below plan
We have planned to migrage from oracle 9.2.0.8 to oracle 10.2.0.3 (RHEL 4). , if you share the differences and benefits in managing and administrative perspective
my management will decide based on this.
your assistance is highly appreciated
Thanks,
AjFor first why not to choose latest available patchset 10.2.0.4 instead of 10.2.0.3?
The biggest difference will be Enterprise manager with all those cool features which makes easier administration.
For more differences look at new features guide:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14214/chapter1.htm
And for management the best argument is - 9i is not supported anymore.
But of course look at features as well. -
Min. rhel packages for oracle 11g r2 database installation
hi guys,
i'm doing a fresh standalone installation of rhel and 11g database. during rhel installation, i can select which category and individual packages to install. i want to select MINIMUM packages for resource saving and security. what packages should i pick up? is there a guide doc?
thanks!

no additional packages for rhel installation except those are required by oracle database or for common linux admin tasks.The oracle installation guide does list the minimum requirements to support the oracle product being installed.
As for minimum requirements for the OS itself, that is beyond the scope/concern of Oracle documents. Doesn't the installation process prompt you for which components you want to install? If you don't know what you are doing, I'd be very leery of trying to create a 'minimal' installation of the OS. -
On RHEL 5.7, Oracle 11.2.0.3 Client installation error
Hello Friends,
I am getting below error while installing Oracle 11gR2 client on a RHEL5.7 Machine. After I finished the installation by silent mode whenever I am launching the sqlplus /nolog command

Odbc driver error while connecting with Oracle BI in Linux
I have Oracle BI Server, Presentation Service and Oracle 11g Client installed in RHEL 5. Oracle BI client is installed in Windows so that I can use Admin tool.
I have created a repository in Windows for sh schema(by creating ODBC). After that I transferred this repository to the ..server/repository in the linux server.
I have installed Oracle ODBC Driver from EASYSOFT and added one odbc data source for sh schema in the ../setup/odbc.ini.
My ODBC setting is as follows.
[ODBC Data Sources]
sh=Oracle in OraDb11g_home1
[sh]
Driver=/usr/local/easysoft/oracle/libesoracle.so
Database=//ipaddress_of_ORACLE_SERVER:port/database_service_name
UID=sh
PWD=sh
When I am trying to query through Oracle Answers I am getting the following error.
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 16023] The ODBC function has returned an error. The database may not be available, or the network may be down. (HY000)
SQL Issued: SELECT Customers."Cust First Name" saw_0 FROM SH ORDER BY saw_0
I have enabled tracing, but I am not getting any clue from trace output.
Can anybody please help.
If it is because of wrong driver, can anybody suggest a proper ODBC Driver for Oracle and how to configure it. If the driver is OK and configuration is wrong, can anybody tell me how to create system dsn in linux?
Thanking you in advance.don't use ODBC for Oracle, use OCI
search on the forum, there's plenty of information about it. -

Migrate Oracle Apps 11.5.10.2 from Sun solaris to RHE Linux 32 bit.
We are migrating the Oracle Apps 11.5.10.2 from Solaris two node to Linux two node including the database Oracle 10.2.04 64 bit.
Since the applications only support 32 bit we are not able to store CM tier in a 64 bit Linux so with this considerations we are going with the below plan.
1. Install RHEL 5 as a 32 bit for two nodes ( One for DB/CM and FORMS/WEB)
2. Migrate the applications and DB from Solaris to Linux as the same node configuration that is
Node A:
Oracle DB 10.2.0.4 64 bit ( SUN oS 10 64bit) -> Oracle 10.2.0.5 32bit (RHEL 5 32 bit)
Oracle Apps CM 11.5.10.2 (SUN OS 10 64bit) -> Oracle apps CM 32 bit(RHEL 5 32 bit)
Node B:
Oracle apps 11.5.10.2 forms (sun OS 10) -> Oracle apps 11.5.10.2 forms ( RHEL 5 32bit)
Oracle apps WEB 11.5.10.2 (SUN OS 10) -> Oracle apps WEB 11.5.10.2 ( RHEL 5 32 bit).
Question : 1. Did you see any snag on this kind of migration
2. Any documentation to migrate the Oracle APPS 11i 10.2.0.4-64 bit database from Sun Solaris to oracle apps 11i 10.2.0.5-32 bit on LinuxHi,
1. Did you see any snag on this kind of migrationWhy would you downgrade the db from 64 bit to 32 bit. As 32 Bit has lot of memory limitations.
You could keep the database on 64 bit for linux too.
2. Any documentation to migrate the Oracle APPS 11i 10.2.0.4-64 bit database from Sun Solaris to oracle apps 11i 10.2.0.5-32 bit on Linux Please see

Hello everyone
* assume that I booted Oracle Linux 6.2 with a Red Hat Compatible Kernel - as opposed to booting the Oracle Linus 6.2 with UEK R1 or UEK R2 kernels *
I am interested in any feature differences between the two OS relating to: functionality, reliability, performance, stability and tools.
The reason I ask is that my employer is trying to figure out if OL 6.2 with a RH compatible kernel is identical to the RHEL 6.2 OS, if we excluded the Oracle UEK and Oracle clustering extra functionality.
This OS will not be used to run Oracle 11g R2 database, this is to be used for any other Linux based non-database applications (such has running Java, JDBC, Apache, C/C++, etc).
many thanks

So now I can tell them to use Oracle Linux 6.x with a RH compatible kernel for all those non-DB systems and use OL 6.x with UEK for Oracle 11g database.
And I remember there was (still is?) a third kernel, which does not contain new features or performance enhancements, but only bug fixes for the RH compatible kernel.
I am not sure if you are going to need it, but it can be very useful in some cases. For example, if there is a bug in the RH kernel, and you don't want to run the UEK line as you want to stick to 100% strict RHEL compatibility, then Oracle can put the fix into this 3rd bug-fix only RH compatible kernel series.
(For me, I've set up dual-boot UEK & standard RHEL kernels on my machines and never have never encountered issues or bugs.)

CRS not starting after Oracle 11g Grid was succesuflly installed
Hi:
Have 2 node RAC. My Shared storage is on openfiler.
Oracle 11g Grid was successfully installed and all the services was working fine. When i restarted the system I found CRS was not coming up. Remaining processes were up and running.
Let me explain what I did: (O/s RHEL 5.4 & oracle 11g R2 grid)
I have a partition in shared disk /dev/sdc1 (I have other partitions, but thought of using only one for OCR and voting disk). (did not define it as raw partition as I used to do in 10g RAC).
While installing Oracle grid and when it prompted to enter the Diskgroup for OCR and Voting disk I gave a name DGDATA and choose only one (external redundancy) disk “/dev/sdc1″ (it does not ask for one for OCR and one for Voting as it used to do in 10g clusterware installation). As per my assumption both OCR and Voting disk were created within /dev/sdc1 (after installation when I queried I got the same info)
The Oracle grid installation has gone through successfully. when I restart the system I find CRS not starting.
The log says: “Error PROC:26: Error while accessing the physical storage ASM……..
ORA-01034: oracle not available...
Could not init OCR, code:26….
Linux permission denied".
For your information….ASM instance is up (check in both the nodes) and I find the diskgroup mounted.
Can anyone help on this.
Also let me know how to uninstall Oracle 11g Grid software and configuration. If I have to reinstall the Oracle 11g grid software and config once again is it possible without reinstalling RHEL. Let me know the steps or any link please. don't want to get into a mess again.
Thanks in advance.
Regards
DineshJorg, I even tried to nomount the DB instance using initDBRAC.ora pfile. Then tried to create spfile still got the same error.
The second trace file which I have pasted looks like some memory dump.

Hi all,
Is Weblogic certified to run on an operating system such as Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL 5.x) that is running on an Oracle VM? Metalink note "Oracle VM General Policy Description [ID 466538.1]" makes me hesitant about Weblogic on Oracle VM. Also the metalink note "Certified Software on Oracle VM [ID 464754.1]" did not seem to give a clear indication about Weblogic.
Thanks,See these two points (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/ias/downloads/fusion-certification-100350.html):
# If an Oracle product has been certified against and is supported on a version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL),
it is automatically certified and supported on the corresponding version of Oracle Linux . (e.g., RHEL4->Oracle Linux 4, RHEL5->Oracle Linux 5).
# If a product is supported and certified on Oracle Linux or RHEL, it is also certified and supported in the virtualized
installation of the same version of Oracle Linux or RHEL running on Oracle VM. (e.g. Oracle Linux 4 -> Oracle Linux 4 on Oracle VM,
Oracle Linux 5 -> Oracle Linux 5 on Oracle VM, RHEL4 -> RHEL4 on Oracle VM, RHEL 5 -> RHEL5 on Oracle VM).
Oracle recommends using latest updates levels and Oracle VM versions available.
Looks like Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL 5.x) that is running on an Oracle VM is certified. -
Oracle ODBC Gateway log file location
Oracle ODBC 11g
Linux RHEL 6.4
Oracle DB 11gR2
=============
is there a default log file for the Oracle ODBC Gateway (dg4odbc) process? if so, where would that be? if no default log file exists, can/how is one created?DG4ODBC puts its log file to $ORACLE_HOME/hs/log - but tracing needs to be enabled first by setting HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL to ON, DEBUG or 255.

Hello Everyone,
We are planning for a Oracle DB Upgrade and it includes several other upgrades as well including storage, hardware, OS and SAP etc.
In the process we need to install the Oracle Grid. As per the SAP recommended installation we should use /oracle directory for the oracle, but oracle is saying to go for /opt directory for this. For the information we will be using RHEL 6 and Oracle 11.2.0.4 Grid. Is it going to create some issue in future and what about the BRTools*. Have anyone faced this situation before?
Thanks.
Kind Regards
AnandHi Anand,
Please refer to below SAP note for configuration
1932366 - Configuration of an Oracle Grid Administrator Account
Follow SAP suggestions as it would be useful in future from support perspective.
Hope this helps.

Multiple Oracle Homes on same server (Oracle AS and DB)
Hello All,
OS : RHEL 4.7
Oracle Application Server : 10.1.3.1
Oracle Database : 11.2.0.1.0
I have been asked to install oracle 11g on a server which is already running Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.1
Due to lack of space on the server the sys admin gave me the space under /usr, Installation went smooth and successfull and the location of complete 11g installed is "/usr/11gr2/app/11g/product"
Database is also created using DBCA with file location "/usr/11gr2/app/11g/oradata"
Question is, I need to set environmental variable under the same user "oracle" so that when one logs in, should be able to logon by just typing sqlplus...
Current .bash_profile of the user "oracle" looks like this...
# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi
# User specific environment and startup programs
PATH=/u01/oracle/product/10.1.3.1/OracleAS_1/jdk/bin:$PATH:$HOME/bin
export RPD_HOME=/home/oracle/ORABI/OBI/server/Repository
export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/oracle/product/10.1.3.1/OracleAS_1
#export JAVA_HOME=/u01/oracle/product/10.1.3.1/OracleAS_1/jdk
export JAVA_HOME=/home/oracle/product/10.1.3.1/OracleAS_1/jdk/
PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/opmn/bin
export ANT_HOME=/usr/local/ant
export PATH=${PATH}:${ANT_HOME}/bin
#export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/ant/jdk
export PATH
Please suggest to include this oracle_home also in the above .bash_profile or any alternative to achive the needs..
Thanks

I do a similar thing using Oracle 10 and 11, but I keep it manual and use bash to default to one.
To switch Oracle homes I run the command : ( using which profile I need )
source ./o10g.profile
Note the 'unset ORACLE_HOME' command in each profile.
