Ridiculous & grotesque HD crash and Time Machine restore failure!  Help?

Trying to make this short. iMac 24" 2009 2.66GHz, 640GB HD, NVIDIA 9400, 4GB ram.
Bought used, installed operating sys from disks, then upgraded to Snow Leopard. All was working fine. Set up Time Machine and it made several backups over two days.
Tonight, for reasons unknown, came into office and screen was on (instead of asleep or screen saver) and fan going 1000 MPH--LOUD!
Cut it off, rebooted, would not boot. Gave me "No bootable device" msg. Booted with OSX 10.5 disk, did UTILITIES/RESTORE FROM BACKUP, restored from Time Machine.
When it rebooted, the gray apple showed up and seconds late a gray shade descended and a black box in center of screen says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down power button until it's off, then press powerbutton again." Says this in 5 languages.
So I did, and the box keeps coming back. Repeatedly.
So then I reboot from OSX 10.5 disk again, go to UTILITIES/RESTORE FROM BACKUP, and restore from ANOTHER Time Machine backup from the iMac 24" I'm replacing, also Snow Leopard updated.
Same result. Black box, "You need to reboot," etc.
***? Am I missing a key step in the full restore? Please advise ASAP as this is driving me batty. not only do I not know what went wrong in the first place (somewhere early on I ran disk utility and did all 4 of the repair/verify options there; all said HD was fine), I have no clue why Time Machine won't restore like I assume it's supposed to!
Please help me before I kill again!

My Mac wouldn't boot. Since I had my trusty Time Machine Backup I formatted the drive and tried to use Migration Assistant to use Time Machine Backup to restore everything but when I tried the backup had an error. Is there anything I can do to restore my mac?
You do not use migration assistant to restore from a TM drive.
You boot into your Leopard DVD and use it to restore from TM drive.
You do not need to do anything with your internal drive. Just follow the instructions.

  • All programs crash after Time Machine restore

After noticing that Photoshop hung the system every time I tried to open it, I ran a disk utility scan on my system disk. It came back that my hard drive was bad. I purchased a new hard disk, installed it into my Mac Pro, booted from my Snow Leopard CD, and tried to restore from my Time Machine backup to the new hard disk.
After restoring, my system boots but every program crashes shortly after I open it. If I open Dashboard it crashes after a few seconds... Mail... crashes after a few seconds. All of these programs worked fine on my "bad" hard drive. The only apparent problem was that attempting to open Photoshop would hang the system.
My original hard drive that was backed up to Time Machine was 300 GB. My new hard drive that I'm attempting to restore to is 2 TB. Does this matter?
Any ideas on how to get a stable system restored?

How did you format the new drive?
How did you do the restore? Did you do a full system restore, starting with your Snow Leopard Install disc? If not, what?
Have you done a +*Verify Disk+* and +*Repair Permissions+* on your internal HD, via Disk Utility?
It's possible that as your disk was failing, it corrupted things on your system, and Time Machine backed those changes up, so the restore brought them back. If everything else checks out, you might want to try the restore again, but select an earlier backup.

  • Old FileVault crashed my MacBook Pro, had to delete, reinstall and Time Machine restore failed. Trying to manually rebuild. No iPhoto pics, no iTunes music and NO DOCUMENTS found! Any thoughts?

Here's the ordeal. I'm running a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 inch with Lion OS. When I converted to Lion, I didn't have enough room on my harddrive to convert to the new FileVault, so I remained on the old system. Less than a week ago I reboot my computer because iPhoto seems to be stuck on "cataloging" my photos, though after days of letting it run, it doesn't do anything. After the reboot, my computer appears as if it had been reset to factory settings with all my programs gone, etc. I'm like, hey, I've got Time Machine, I'll restore it. After the restore is run, when I go to login, I get the dreadful error message, "You are unable to log into the FileVault user "John" at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred". I searched the internet via my iPhone for suggestions and followed everyone of them, all the way down to erasing my harddrive and reinstalling Lion. So I get back into my computer and think I'm golden. I go to restore my computer via Time Machine and wham....I'm right back to that error message. I think, ok, I'll do it again. This time it messes us even more, giving me two login screens, one for the new Lion like before I restored the computer and then a second, as if it were restored, but unable to login. On top of that, I couldn't get back to the Command-R page! I thought I was really screwed! Well, I finally figured a way back, or maybe it was just that it finally decided to cooperate, I don't know, but I erased my harddrive again, and reinstalled again and thought, well, I'll rebuild manually by selecting what I want to restore from the Time Machine drive. I was able to get all my applications back and running, but to my dismay, I seemingly have lost all my iTunes music (except that which Apple has graciously setup to redownload now "thank you!) plus all my iPhoto's and even worse, all my DOCUMENTS!!!! Here I thought Time Machine from backing all this stuff up, but with over a years worth of back-ups I cannot locate any photos, music, or my documents on my drive to extract! Needless to say, I will never be using Time Machine again to back up my computer, I'll find another program or at least do it all manually. But my question is: am I looking in the wrong places for this files? Are they hidden under some unknowning folder that doesn't list it as music, photos or files? I can manage with the music, I can live with the photos because my wife has many of them on her computer and I have many uploaded to Facebook, but my files! My documents, thousands of them, many with information I won't be able to compile again, seemingly gone unless someone out there has any ideas?!!!
I even had iPhoto search the drive for photos and after hours of the barber shop pole spinning I cancelled the command for I figured it wasn't going to find anything.
If anyone has any suggestions, or if Apple, you are reading this and can provide some direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also - my battery has been telling me "service battery" for a LONG time and then it switched to "replace soon" som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
... my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location.

  • Spotlight fails to load, constantly crashes after Time Machine restore

    Problem description:
After having made the mistake of running a Unix command that altered more files than I intended and possibly damaged the file system, I decided to restore to a previous state with Time Machine. (By the way I am running Yosemite.)
Evidently, something was corrupted with the latest backup, since the system said it couldn’t restore every time I tried to use it. But I succeeded with the second newest backup.
Since the restoration, the Spotlight icon has disappeared from the corner of the menu bar, and cannot be activated with keyboard shortcuts. The same problem exists whether I start in safe mode or from a fresh account.
The .app file still exists in CoreServices, and indexing appears to continue, as I am able to conduct searches through finder windows. I have tried emptying all the caches, restarting SystemUIServer and the menubar itself.
I have never, to my knowledge, instructed an application or the computer to hide Spotlight from the menubar. And though I doubt this is the issue, it is interesting that when I select in Onyx the option to hide it, and then deselect it, there’s a short little flash in the corner where the icon should be as if it tries to start for a moment but for whatever reason crashes.
It appears from the console that every second it is trying to load when this happens:

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Safari 7.0.4 crashes after Time Machine restore?

Yesterday, I updated to the Yosemite Beta, and played around with it for a bit. After deciding that it was too buggy to keep using, I rebooted, holding Command+R, and restored to my latest Mavericks backup, from my Time Machine, which is a 1TB sata drive on my desk. When I booted it back up, it asked me for my Apple ID a few times, and then dumped me at my desktop. Everything worked fine, except for Safari. Upon trying to open it, it crashes, and gives me this crashlog. If anyone knows how to fix it, I would love some advice.
Just realized that I posted this to the wrong section. My bad.

I'll ask the hosts to move the post.
Try repeating what you did, but before you restore, erase the disk formatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Options GUID.
Several people have experienced this. It appears Yosemite is leaving files which are incompatible.

  • Drobo NAS and Time Machine restore problems

My HDD crashed.  I installed a new one.  Reinstalled OSX Mavericks and tried a Migration Assistant from a DROBO 5N NAS (holding the Time Machine sparse.bundles).  Profiles reinstalled, no data, no applications.  Weird.  I have tried Drobo, I have tried Apple consultant - recommended by Apple's support website.  No success in getting the restore to take place with Apple software.  Wondering if I can do this file by file.  I really only care about the 1TB of movies, music, photos I have on iTunes and Aperture backups inside of the sparse.bundle files.  Everything else I can reload.  Please help.  I have been down since July 15 on my home theater and photo library.  Need to get this up and running ASAP.  Everything looks OK on the backup file.  When I try to simply copy the data files to my new HDD I get the dreaded OSX file copy error after about 200GB - which takes an incredibly long amount of time on my wireless home network (about 5 hours).  Really need an expert to help out on this one.  Please let me know if you can.
    Thanks,
    GJM120

    Hi Bret,
You state it's running 10.5.8 but that it's only 9 months old; those two don't match up. If it is only 9 months old, bring it in to an Apple Store ("genius" bar appointment) and have them check it over. It sounds like it may be a HD issue to me.

  • Apple Applications Crash After Time Machine Restore

I recently had to do a full system restore using Time Machine. Ever since the restore completed, most of the Apple applications on my iMac immediately crash when I try to open them. Luckily, Disk Utility is one of the applications that does not crash, so I tried to verify/restore permissions, however, when I try to, I am given this:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Warning: SUID file "Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app/Contents/Resources/kcproxy" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modified and will not be repaired.

However, according to this KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448, those are all errors that I can "safely ignore".
This is what the Problem Report says when one of the applications crashes (this one is for iTunes, but they are pretty much all the same):

In addition to not being able to run about 95% of my Apple applications, I can also no longer connect to my Time Capsule Time Machine backups. I am able to SEE the files in the built-in hard drive, but I can not mount the sparsebundle for the backups of any of my computers. I am however able to access them on a different computer. Also, if I try to use System Recovery from my Snow Leopard install disk again, it can't find any backups on my Time Capsule, even though my other computer can view the files with no problem.
Any help with any of these problems would be greatly appreciated.

I had a couple of apps start crashing today, with basically the same stuff in the crash reports.
Reinstalling Safari (which also reinstalls the WebKit and JavascriptCore frameworks, which seem to be part of the problem) worked for me.
I found that solution here, after Googling for "Symbol not found: __ZNK3JSC6JSCell17getTruncatedInt32ERi":
    http://www.meproxsoft.de/tag/time-machine/
I know very little German (even though I took German in high school-- it might have helped if the teacher actually knew English), but I managed to get "repair permissions" and "reinstall Safari" from all that.

  • 40gb free space appeared after clean install of Mac OS X and time machine restore? What happened?

Recently, my computer had a display problem, and I brought it in to the Apple store to get it fixed. When they returned it, they had replaced not only the display but also the logic board, and the hard drive, and they did a clean install of the operating system. After OS X was clean installed onto my computer, I restored my files from Time Machine, but my hard drive now shows about 40 gigs more free space than I had before, when I originally brought my computer in. All my files seem to be in place. What am I missing? I was guessing that the cache of my web browsers have been cleared... But 40 Gigs seems like a lot of space to recover solely through clearing the web cache. Any ideas?

Hi, one question & one suggestion...
What possible things are connected at home but not at the store, inlude every cable, etc.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • How to recreate Mavericks OS X Recovery partition on Macintosh HD after HDD replacement and Time Machine restore?

  • New HD and time machine restore was interrupted. Only half of data transferred.

My HD has been replaced and when backing up from my time machine the transferred got interrupted. When Mac book booted only half the data. So I erased the hard drive to start again although I now can't restore from my time machine  as its saying not enough space on HD to restore. Please help coz I'm freaking out!

Follow these instructions for reinstall 10.6, you will need to erase the ENTIRE drive by selecting the drive makers name and size on the left while booted from the 10.6 disk that came with your machine as this is the machine specific version with your free iLife included.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If you use the white 10.6 disk, (it's 10.6.3) then that doesn't have the free iLife, but if you later purchased it from AppStore it can be redownloaded when you get to 10.8 again.
(ideally that older machine should stick with 10.6.8, but you have your files already in 10.8 on the TM drive, so...)
Make sure you erase the entire drive with the Security Erase Zero All Data option, this will "pre-map" off any potentially failing sectors on the drive before they fail with your data on it, it makes your machine a lot more reliable.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Once that's all done, log in and setup with your same user name as before (important) and Software Update to 10.6.8, log into AppStore and hold the option key down and click on Purchases, redownload 10.8 and install.
Revisit and redownload other software like iLife etc.
Use the TM drive to bring back copies of your files into their respective folders.
Reboot the Mac holding the command and r keys down, use Terminal and enter resetpassword, a window appears, select your boot volume and user, then reset ACL's, should fix your user permissions issue.
Note: What the AppleStore should have done is installed the 10.8 Recovery HD on your new drive, then you could have just reinstalled 10.8 from that.

  • Mavericks - clean install with filevault and Time machine restore

    Hi All,
I will update my MacBook pro mid 2011 with the new Mavericks OS.
I've activated Filevault on my HDD due to corporate security rules.
I want to make a clean install of the new OS.
    I plan the following action:
1 - Make a full backup with Time machine
2 - Create a USB drive with Mavericks on it, I'm using Diskmaker to create it
3 - Start MBP with the USB
4 - With disk utility erase my HDD
    5 - Install Mavericks
6 - Reload my data from the Time machine Backup
    Question:
I'm a bit Scare about the Time Machine backup and Filevault, any experience with the same configuration, do I risk anythink if I follow my plan ?
Do I need to desactivated Filevault before to lunch my clean install and make the backup after that ?
Thanks in advance for your feedback
    Regards
    Alain M.

    Hi Alain,
I see you never got a reply to this, but I'm wondering what you finally did? I have very similar questions, but I'm "upgrading" from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I also have FileVault activated and use a Time Machine backup. Any comments/suggestions/experience you (or others) would like to share would be helpful.
    Thanks

  • Time Machine Restore Failure... HELP!

    Hi all,
I recently (accidentally) reformatted my Mac's hardrive and then installed Lion. I can only recover the files from TM after the Lion install. I can 'see' other backups for a split moment in the time field, but can onlny restore from the last 2 backups that I can clearly see after the Lion install. I REALLY need to get my apps back! Can anyone out there heeeeeelp!!!?

Are you using the "Star Wars" display?  If so, that's probably not what you want to do.
Your best bet is to do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  That will put everything back just the way it was; your version of OSX, your apps, user accounts, preferences, data, etc.

  • Time Machine restore failure with FileVault

    Hello,
I have a MacBook running 10.6.2. Previously I had FileVault enabled for my home directory, and my uid was 502.
Because of many problems, I was forced to rebuild this MacBook. I made sure to have a full and complete backup in Time Machine, then I rebuilt the notebook.
Now when I'm trying to do a restore, I navigate through the finder to /Volumes/Time\ Machine/Backups.backupdb/DATE/Users/userid I cannot open the .sparsebundle disk image. I get an error that states the disk format is not recognized.
How can I get my data back?
    Thanks,
    Tom

that's because of permissions issues. your UID now is 501 and it was 502. also, don't do anything with TM backups via finder. don't copy them via finder and don't try to open the sparse bundle from finder while it's on the TM drive. restore the sparse bundle to the main drive using TM interface (not by copying in finder) and then work with the restored sparse bundle. to eliminate permissions issues the easiest might be to do everything from root. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528 activate the root user, log in as root, restore the sparse bundle and try mounting it.

  • Time Machine restore failure

I cannot get my Time Machine to restore my Aperture 3 library. It starts, gets to about 2 or 3 Gb (out of 9 Gb) and just hangs. Not always at the same place, but in the same general area. And I've tried different dates as sources. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks - that was a good idea. But it didn’t help. I actually am connected via Firewire (which is good).  When I ran the repair disk, it didn’t find any problems. I also have Disk Warrior and I tried that, but it said there wasn’t enough memory and stopped mid-way through its dance.  I feel like a schmuck because I trusted Aperture to be stable and a safe repository for my photos. I also back up externally to Mozy.  It takes 8 days to restore my Aperture library and, when it finished, it was as bad as when it started (so maybe that backup is corrputed, too).
Aperture has been so unstable - this is not the first time this has happened - but the first time I couldn’t fix it (restoring from Time Machine has NEVER worked). I’m at a (true) loss.
