Ridiculously long pauses when burning

Aloha everyone. I just set up my MacMini here in the office .. did all the software updates and whatnot. I'm running 10.5.8, iTunes 8.2.1. I imported an audio CD one of our classes recorded and am trying to burn it for one of the classrooms to use. This is something I have done previously with my iMac and my MacBook. It imported fine but attempting to burn the disk is seriously burning me up. It took over 20 minutes to "check the playlist". There are 18 tracks in all of my iTunes because it's brandnew - 20 minutes is unacceptable. It paused a million times and would only push forward if I made another window active then went back to iTunes. Now it's "Preparing the Disc" as it has been for nearly an hour. It's on track 8 of 18. Seriously. What's going on???
Mind you, I wouldn't have even been aware of this now except the teacher who needs the disc was trying to burn it on her MacBookPro (just a month old, mind you) and wasn't able to burn it either due to "medium write errors".
What's going on at Apple? It's always been my computer of choice but are they attempting to move forward too quickly to stop and check up on what's already there?
Can anyone help me here ... please ... I fear if I call Apple right now I'm too ****** off to not blame the messenger - or tech support - so calling isn't such a great idea LOL. Thanks.

No one has had this issue come up at all?

  • Long pause when opening PDFs - v10.1.3 Win 7 64bit

Hi all, when opening any PDF, most of the time I seem to get a long pause in Adobe Reader straight after the PDF document has loaded (around 10 to 20 seconds or so). This has only recently started happening. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64bit, SP1, 8GB RAM, Intel Core i5 3.30GHz and a 256GB SSD drive.
Re-installing Adobe Reader hasn't helped, but are there some other suggestions I could try? Thanks for any help.

A good possibility is that the latest version of Photoshop is demanding things of your display driver that it hasn't been asked to do before.  Display driver updates do solve a LOT of issues...  I suggest you visit the web site of the maker of your video card and see if they offer an updated display driver you can download and install.
Your mention of the type tool issues implies a possibly corrupted or badly formed font.   Chris Cox just the other day shared a neat link to a handy font troubleshooting page...  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84363.html
Lastly, it never hurts to set all Photoshop preferences back to defaults and then reconfigure only the things you know you need to change...  Do this by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt when cold-starting Photoshop.  You have to be very quick, and if you're quick enough Photoshop will prompt you to confirm the deletion of the current preferences.
    Good luck!

P.S., At the moment, on my system Photoshop CS5 seems very stable.  I had some periods of instability, and display driver updates from ATI seem to have solved that completely.  Currently I'm using Catalyst 11.9, which may be interesting to you if you're using an ATI card.

  • New "long pause" when I'm trying to select an item from a long menu?

So, just in the past few days whenever I try to select an item out of a long menu, I'm unable to select it until after a long pause of approx 30 seconds. For example, in Handbrake if I scroll through chapters and want to pick a certain chapter, the program sits for about 30 seconds before it will select the chapter.
This has also happened in Itunes when I'm trying to select a genre. It will allow me to scroll all the way down with no problem but when I try to select the genre it sits there for about 30 seconds before doing anything.
Anybody else having this issue? Any fixes?
    Thanks.

  • Long pause when printing from phaser 6360dn

We have a Mac that was recently upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion and moved to a different location.  The mac is now connected directly to a Xerox Phaser 6360DN via a usb cable.  When any document is printing, there is a pause of about 3 minutes before the printer starts going.  Here are some facts about this issue:
    1) Before the Mountain Lion upgrade, this particular mac was able to print fine to the printer over the usb without a pause.  The Mac had Mac OS X 10.6.8 before
    2) When the pause occurs, and if you look at the printer spool, there are two jobs listed.  The first says "Setting up printer" or something similar and the second job is the actual document being printed.  The pause is caused by the first job which takes 3 minutes.  After that is done, the printing of the document occurs pretty quickly.  As a workaround, if you click the "x" next to the the first job to delete it, it will move to the next fairly quickly and complete the printing.  However, as you can imagine, this becomes a pain quickly especially when you need to print lots of documents.
    3)  When printing in Microsoft Word or other Office apps, clicking the direct print button results in no pause and fast printing.  Going through the menu and selecting "print" results in the pause.  Other applications don't behave that way.  For some reason, using the print button in Word bypasses the part of the process that results in the pause.
    4) When in the printer spool/info folder, clicking on the get printer supplies information button results in an error that the printer is not responding.
I'm thinking there is some communication problem between the two devices that causes the hang. How to solve it I don't know yet.  I have tried the following:
    1) delete printer and reinstall printer
    2) download latest drivers from Xerox and do 1 above
    3) Used the reset printing system button to zap everything and do 1 above
    4) switch usb ports and use different cables
    5) turn off printer sharing and printer notifications
    6) no luck with any of these fixes
Not sure what to try next.  Please help

We have a workaround for now.  Using the generic postscript driver bypasses whatever initial operations were being done, so printing is much faster.  However, occassionally the printer outputs pure data instead of the expected output.  That's ok for now, but still would like to get the driver to work somehow.  I might try the Gutenprint drivers to see if that makes any difference.  Was also thinking of installing the usbtb alternative usb backend to see if that makes a difference.  Thanks for the input.

This first job - the setting up printer one - is a status check of the printer. It is being sent by the 10.8 printing system to ensure the printer has paper and toner before the print job is sent. The fact that it is sent is most likely due to the Xerox driver, or more appropriately the PPD. To check this is the case, open System Information and select Printers in the left column. In the top right pane, select the Phaser 6360. The bottom right pane will show information about the printer. There will be an entry called Printer Commands. Next to this entry, do you have some text, such as Report Levels?

The Word Print icon in the toolbar (ribbon) is by default set to "Print One Copy". This setting bypasses the printer driver settings and submits the print job to the default printer. So as the printer settings are not called, then there is no status check performed and printing is not delayed.

The Supply Levels section of Options & Supplies does not work for every brand / model of printer. And even if it was working on 10.6, does not mean it will work on 10.8.
Ultimately this will be up to Xerox to fix. You should report it to them when you get a chance, although don't be surprised if they tell you it is up to Apple to fix. The answer to that is Xerox makes the driver, not Apple, so Xerox needs to fix it. Also, other brands are not having the same issue so this points the finger back at Xerox.

  • Freezing or Long Pauses when using Phone

I am noticing that when I go to use my phone for email and TM , sometimes it stalls in the process of processing a letters entry, somtimes it completely stays frozen.
any ideas or ways to eliminate this ?
Is the phone flawed or is it defective?

I've noticed that my iPhone bogs down some at times when receiving email including the keyboard - especially when receiving a number of messages and if any of the messages include an attachment or attachments of any significant size.
When responding to a post here on my iPhone when connected via EDGE before the page completely loads, the keypad will have some pauses which goes away after the page has completely loaded.
I suggest trying a Reset, which is done by pressing and holding the Home button and Sleep/Wake or On/Off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so.

  • B209 - long pause when printing last page

I have a b209 printer setup as a wireless printer.  It communicates with my computers but when printing multipage prints it will print fine for the first page but on the last page it prints a couple of lines and then stops printer for about a minute and then starts printing again and completes.
This happens printing from both a WindowsXP and Windows 7 machine.  I've loaded the latest software from the web site and still experience the same problems.
TIA for any help with this.

OK, that's a pretty elaborate system!  The first thing that came to mind is all of the devices the packets have to go through to get to your printer.
Anyway, I assume you have only one device acting as DHCP server (it looked that way, but want to make sure that the Uverse was not involved).
Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address). This is important.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Leave the gateway and DNS blank.
    - Click 'Apply'
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
If this does not work, do the same thing only enter the gateway IP for gateway and first DNS entry, leave the second blank.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • IPod no longer pauses when I disconnect headphones / speakers...

Is this normal with the latest firmware? I actually liked that featuer so I could just unplug when I stopped listening and not have to worry about holding the play button. Esp. helpful in my car setup. Any ideas?

I haven't tried hooking up another ipod to the stereo, but that's a good idea. I will try that in the next couple of days. The stereo works fine with the DVD player hooked up to it, and I also tried plugging the ipod into one of the other ports (for DVD, etc.), so I think it has to be the cord or perhaps a firmware issue. Anyway, thanks for responding.

I know there is at least one memory leak in the logged software, where probably 50.000-100.000 ThreadGroups are produced each day and not collected (but only with some configurations).
So, after browsing around, I have found out that UseConcMarkSweepGC could reduce the long pauses. I tried it together with CMSIncrementalMode, but the JVM running at one of our customers crashed after 2 hours while using both options together. Apparently there where some issues with the incremental collector, which was fixed in 1.6. I was forced to remove the VM arguments immediately, but will probably use UseConcMarkSweepGC later after some thorough testing.
I have tried find out which other VM options I could use to tune the application, but I'm quite new to this and the amount of options are a bit overwhelming at the moment. I thought I could ask here if someone know some obvious option values (like NewRatio,SurvivorRatio etc.)

Doesn't a "Full Collection" always collect all generations (i.e. also the perm generation)? It's always been my understanding, that a "Full Collection" is some kind of "irregular" collection which only occurs if the JVM has "really bad need" for memory (e.g. when the concurrent phase of a CMS collection fails, when perm runs full or if someone calls System.gc()). So, as you write earlier, the first 3 collections labeld "Full GC" are real full GCs since they collect all generations (including perm). The latter four collections shouldn't be labeld "Full GC" (as you write). Yes, a full collection collects all the generations including the
    perm generation.
In a stop-the-world collector such as the one you're using, a full
collection is not an unusual collection. They just happen less
frequenctly. Objects that survive a minor collection (collection
of the young gen) a few times will be promoted (copied to) the
tenured generation. The idea is that such objects may be
long lived so should be promoted to save the cost of handling
them during a minor collection. Eventually the tenured
generation gets full and then it gets collected.
And yes and yes. The first 3 are full collections and the
latter 4 are labelled incorrectly as full collections.
    >
However, there are a lot of collections with "DefNew" followed by "Tenured" (the first three sections in the original post) which are regular collections where the promotion of objects from new to old caused the old generation to run full which triggers a "Tenured collection". But these collections (according to my understanding) are not full collections, but only regular tenured collections. (Sorry, I don't want to be picky about this. I guess that's even what you meant in your post...)I can see how this can be unclear. A "Tenured" collection
is a full collection. It also collects the perm gen. And
in fact it also collects the young gen again. This is how it
is implemented in the hotspot JVM. It can be implemented
    differently in other JVM's.
The situation where a "DefNew" is followed by a "Tenured"
as in your logs is a bit unusual I think. The minor collection
is reducing the amount of used space in young generation.
    DefNew: 13938K->1166K(14720K)
The decrease from 13938K to 1166K. There is then a collection
    of the tenured gen.
    Tenured: 195455K->114421K(195696K)
I've seen this when large objects (a significant fraction of
the young gen) are being allocated. The allocation fails in
the young gen, a minor collection is done but the space freed
in the young gen is still not large enough to allocate the object
so a collection of the tenured generation is done and the large
object is allocated directly out of the tenured gen. In the numbers
above after the minor collection about 13M of free space is
available in the young gen. Are you allocating objects larger
    that 13M?

  • Intermitent pauses when loading JSP page.

    Solaris 7
    Weblogic V5.1 SP5
    Apache 1.3.12

    JDK 1.3
    Hi,
We have two environments running very similar configurations.
The first is a test environment with an Ultra5 running as an Apache server
and an Ultra 10 as the weblogic server. Two databases are currently being
used one is an SQL and the other Oracle.
The second is our production site, and is the same apart from the hardware,
the Apache system is a Netra and the Weblogic server is a 220R. (There are
some other differences, physical location etc)
On the test site everything is fine but on the live site we are experiencing
a long pause when loading pages. This happens every 10-15 times a page is
loaded, and only on JSP pages. It seems to stop after loading part of the

I'm going to swap out as many network components at our co-location as
possible, but I'm wondering if anybody else has experienced a similar
    problem.

It turned out to be a faulty network component!! Strange behaviour though.

    Hi,
We have two environments running very similar configurations.
The first is a test environment with an Ultra5 running as an Apache server
and an Ultra 10 as the weblogic server. Two databases are currently being
used one is an SQL and the other Oracle.
The second is our production site, and is the same apart from thehardware,
the Apache system is a Netra and the Weblogic server is a 220R. (There are
some other differences, physical location etc)
On the test site everything is fine but on the live site we areexperiencing
a long pause when loading pages. This happens every 10-15 times a page is
loaded, and only on JSP pages. It seems to stop after loading part of the
page and around 30-60 seconds later the rest gets loaded.

  • Experience long pauses loading sites

In the last 2 weeks I have been experiencing long pauses when trying to load web sites. Sometimes I get firefox not responding then after several seconds the new site pops up. Sometimes the little circle stops spinning and goes solid then once again after several seconds the new site pops up. When streaming video the site will pop up with a blank screen and then after several seconds to more than a minute the video pops up and begins to stream. I have triied the same sites inIE and they load instanly

    No problems here.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Long pause before a .pdf opens when right-clicking

When opening a .pdf with Adobe Reader 9.3.2 in Windows XP Explorer by double-clicking it or by right-clicking then selecting Open with Adobe Reader 9, there is a long pause (22 seconds) before it opens.  If I disable then re-enable my local area network connection, these symptoms disappear for a while and the .pdf files seem to open normally (within a second or two). What could be causing this?  When opening a .pdf from within the Adobe Reader program itself, the .pdf files seem to open normally whether the local network connection is enabled or disabled.

Sometimes after a Microsoft Update, doc and xls files open slowly.  Apparently, Microsoft Update keeps resetting the DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) in the doc and xls file types.  To fix this, I follow the instructions at the following Website:
    http://forums.techarena.in/ms-office-support/749154.htm
Here are the instructions I follow for doc and xls.
If the problem is ONLY when you double-click on a file to open it. the
problem is likely due to DDE. It can be fixed by reinstalling, OR this
    workaround.
Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types, scroll down to and
select XLS, click Advanced, select Open entry, click the edit Button.
Now uncheck "Use DDE" and then put your cursor in the Application box,
arrow all the way to the right and put in "%1" (include the quote
marks), IF there is /dde remove it. Then OK you way out. Things should
    work quickly again.
After doing this, doc and xls files open normally again.  But this does not work with pdf files, it has to be something else I haven’t figured out yet.  The Disk Defragmanter Analysis says I don’t have to defrag my C: drive, and the system idle process is at 98% when the file is being opened.

Yes... a search of the forums would have prevented asking that question.

  • HT1711 when burn playlist, songs are no longer in numerical order?

Sort on the track number (or any other column you want to sort on).

  • What format do I use when burning an audio CD?

    Hello,
I'm wanting to fit the maximum amount of songs on a CDR using a 48x 700MB 80 minute disk.
So I know I go to preferences and then click on advanced and then burning. Then it says preferred speed (what speed do I want?), then audio CD, MP3 CD or Data CD or DVD. Do I always want to use audio when burning? I wanting to burn songs to playback.
    Thanks,
    M.

We are getting a bit off topic, but to answer your question, I use Toast version 6, but in general I love Toast and couldn't deal with having to use the Finder or Disk Utility to burn various kinds of CDRs and DVDs. Toast makes it much easier for many things and also tends to be faster to work with.
For example, if you use the Finder, you put in your blank, it goes on the desktop and then you drag and drop in stuff you want to put on the blank. You then have to wait for the machine to copy everything into a cache file somewhere which can take a long time if you are talking about 4GB of DVD data. THEN you burn the DVD.
With Toast, you can simply add and remove or move around stuff in your DVD/CDR project without waiting for a bunch of irritating copying. When you are ready, hit burn and it writes the stuff to your DVD.
Toast can do a lot of things the built Apple apps do not do or do not do very well.

  • I upgraded to Mtn. Lion last night but now it takes forever to boot up.  I get to the desktop and my wallpaper is there, but the items on my desktop take more than 5 minutes to load.  It's a ridiculously long time.  Can I fix it somehow?

As I said, I upgraded my MacBook Pro (2011) from Lion to Mountain Lion last night.  This morning I couldn't get it to boot up at all.  The beach ball just spun and spun.  Now I can get it to my desktop and can see my wallpaper, but it takes another FULL five minutes to finish loading my desktop items.  Can I do anything to speed this up?  It's a ridiculously long time to wait.  I haven't even tried opening any applications yet.
