Ridiculously long sync time

It takes my iPod more than an hour now to put on only one CD. The problem isn't the speed of the upload, but the amount of time it takes to even start. iTunes will say updating, but nothing happens for at least 45 minutes, nothing is synced over.

  • Need help with long sync times - busy optimizing unchanged pictures

Before the latest update I was having a problem with long sync times, often with time spent optimizing pictures that hadn't changed since the last sync. This morning I did the latest update and now it's going on hours updating. Again, optimizing >8000 pics, none of which have changed since yesterday's sync.
Any suggestions as to what to do? Thanks.

Yes I plug the IPOD into the USB port.  Today it is a little worse.  When I plug it in it will sync for a moment, pop the message that says IPOD IS  SYNCED TO ANOTHER COMPUTER DO YOU WANT TO SYNC TO THIS COMPUTER.  If I say yes it immediately says FILE NOT FOUND.  The whole page locks up and I have to shut the computer down and restart.
Sometimes it just recgonizes the named of the IPOD then immediatel disconnets it.  I am so frustrated with this POS and copy protection and all the other things Apple is doing to ensure there songs are not stolen.  It is a PAIN and now this...149.00 gone down the tube.

  • Long Sync times...... Solved!!!

Over the past 2 months I have been moving my nearly 4TB iTunes Library from Win 7 64bit to my brand new Mac Mini with Lion. Like many, I made the assumption that because iTunes was an Apple product it would run at its best on an Apple product. So far, the jury is still out on this one.
During the process of moving I discovered 2 bugs with iTunes. The first one was to do with consolidating an iTunes Library in an area greater than 4TB (I have reported this using the usual channels). The second one isn't quite so "rare" and may benefit others which is why I decided to open this thread.
In my house there are 3 Apple TV's (Gen 1), 2 iPod Touch's, 1 iPad and 4 iTunes users (with corresponding libraries of various sizes). In the center is what we laughlingly call our iTunes Server which now resides on a Mac Mini (2.7GHz 4G). It took many attempts to move our primary library from Windows to Mac (I will try to document all the problems on another occasion) but when I eventually got it working I noticed that sync times on any device attached to the Mac Mini library would take a minimum of 20 minutes no matter how small the sync should have been. In all cases the first 15 to 20 minutes consisted of the Mac Mini running at around 100% CPU without actually achieving much and then suddenly the CPU would reduce down to lower levels and the sync would complete as normal. Initially I thought iTunes was in a loop but eventually decided to let it run just to see what would happen....and sure enough it eventually completed normally.
Rather than go through all the different things that I tried to sort this out I will simply point out what I think is a bug in the Mac version of the product (it works OK in the Windows version). We have a family photo library with over 80000 photos in it. When syncing any device with photos from this library I used to select the root directory of the library and then simply select "selected folders" within that library inside the iTunes Photos Tab. This method had worked ok for us for at least 3 years in the old Windows environment. In the Mac environment however iTunes appears to need to cycle through the whole photo library EVERY TIME before it starts to actually sync. If instead I simply picked one folder with say 2000 photos in it, it would start syncing instantly without any delay. I can happily reproduce this problem whenever I want to.
So if you have long sync times ONE option is to check how you are accessing your photo library.

I'm experiencing this problem too. It goes through syncing Contacts, Calendars, etc. and then it say Syncing iPhone and hangs. CPU usage for iTunes goes from 7-10 to 103 and stays pegged. I have discovered that if I go to the "Advanced" section of the "Info" tab in iTunes and select "Replace information on this iPhone" that it will sync successfully, but only for that sync and the next sync will again hang. This trick seems to work whether I select all the "replace" options (Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Notes, and Mail Accounts) or just one (I tried with just Notes selected).
I haven't tried the Restore option yet.

  • Extremely long sync time

I have an 8 gb 3G iphone w/ virtually no photos, about a gig of music, 3 gigs of video and a gig of apps. It takes 8 hours plus to sync since using 3.0. After the first sync, a daily sync only takes 20 to 30 min, with no change in music, video, photos or apps. I read a post about deleting back-up and starting over. Not working. I'm going on 7 hours again to sync and it's only 3/4 done. Any help is appreciated. I'm using an Intel iMac, 2.16 ghz with iTunes 9.02. Again, it's been like this since using 3.0 software.
    TIA

I agree that it is probably related to an app. One of my apps was causing long sync times, many users reported it, and the developer figured out that he could store its content in the iPhone's "cache" area instead of its "data" area. (This was acceptable - the app creates a local mirror of one's online content). This simple change shortened sync times considerably because the sync did not need to run through all that data each time anymore. The app does its own syncing to its cloud, so it's no big loss to have it excluded from the iPhone sync.
You may have an app with a similar issue. You say you have a gigabyte of apps? That's a lot! Since most apps are tiny, that does sound like you have at least one app that maintains a large database, whether it be maps, game assets, or whatever. You should find a way or a utility to list your apps by size, because the biggest apps would be the most likely suspects.

  • Trying to understand long sync time after 4 update :re blurry photos

hi i wanted to take out the 1 photo album that was blurred/grainy after update and then re-install them so that they are optimized. however when i sync it is taking hours. the album in question has 800 photos in it, but it should delete right away. i have had to exit the sync several times.
can anyone tell me first the steps to removing a photo album. so at least i am clear on that?
and then im wondering if these long syncs are normal. i have very little data on the phone itself. before the update it was synching quick. i have windows 7 and itunes 9.2.
    thanks in advance.

    ok its optimizing. thanks again.
thanks tamara. i will give that a shot. in order to do that do i have to select in the options "sync only checked songs and videos"? also does videos refer to photos as well?
sorry i know im flatlining here, i appreciate the help.

  • Problems since 2.2.1  (applemobilebackup.exe error, long sync time)

After installing 2.2.1, I am experiencing the following and wondering if anyone on this forum has a solution to the following two issues. Thanks in advance.
While syncing to my pc (it's a toshiba laptop running xp sp3), right before completing, there has been an applemobilebackup.exe error appearing that I click ok to and then it finishes sync'ing. I'v searched the net and it seems like I'm the only one experiencing this??
It seems to keep taking longer and longer to sync. I remember the status bar running faster than I can keep an eye on it. After installing a few games, it's at a crawl these days. I uninstalled the Facebook app and still runs at a crawl. Anybody have any ideas how to enable faster sync times?

Here is an article from the apple support website that might help out.

  • D7000 H.264 to ProRes - Ridiculously long conversion times

When converting the D7000 footage from h.264 to ProRes for editing in Final Cut, it's taking absolutely ridiculously long to do so, even with short clips. I primarily use the Canon 7D. When converting 7D footage with those same output settings, it's acceptable the time it takes. But, with the D7000's footage, it's then astronomically longer of a process.
Does anyone know why? I'm assuming it has to do with the higher compression of the Nikon footage, but I wanted to see if there is anymore light to be shed on this.
Thanks in advance for taking time to read through this.
    Evan

Shooting on the D7000, I used Image Capture to import a 2 minute 1080p24 clip that was 325 megs,
Compressor processed it to ProRes422LT using 7 of my 8 cores in about 7 minutes to a file that is now 1.2 gigs.
So, roughly, I'm looking at 6-8 times real time to process H,264 to ProResLT into a file that is roughly 4x the size of the  original.
The image is lovely but shooting through my Nikkor primes has several negative aspects, most notably, today's autofocus lenses have focus barrels that go through the entire range in 120 to 200 degrees. My ancient manual Nikkors had focus rings that used 200 to more than 360 degrees of rotation to go from minimum focual distance to infinity. This, in combination with a split image rangefinder or microprism, meant precision focus was easy to achieve on the older lenses. Today's lenses have tolerances that are too tight for manual focus, merely letting go of the focusing barrel pushes the lens past the exact focus point. Of course, a precision focusing aid is not an option on any of Nikon's "professional" cameras these days.
Auto focus tracking while shooting is unreliable and unprofessionally lame. Manually tracking focus while shooting requires a very good monitor hood/magnifier. This requirement alone makes the whole DSLR video thing totally stupid and completely amateurish. Even though I scored a new camera, I'm stuck with this lame process because some pinhead at my company has suddenly decided bokeh is cool.
Why doesn't Nikon just adapt their CMOS, lens mount and basic controls to a dedicated, fully professional digital cinema camera?

  • Extremely long sync times.

WHen i go to Sync my iPod Touch 32g it takes it about 3hours to even start putting the new content onto the iPod. From there it takes a matter of minutes to update the new music. Am i doing something wrong or is this normal? It either Backups the ipod or verifies it for around 2~3 each time.

That to way to long compared to my 16G, but what I have been doing is avoiding the long backup (when not necessary) by aborting it after it starts , then continue on with the rest. You want to check also who many aps you have and are they all compatible with the latest upgrade. Make sure they are all updated. I also removed aps I don't use frequently and that decreased my syn time.
in general I find the backup process is taking too long and have put in complaint to apple.

  • Ridiculously long installation time for CS6?

I'm downloading the CS6 Master Collection through the University of Maryland software center website. I downloaded all the different parts required for installing, and now the installation time remaining says 20 hours and it's still going up. I've closed out all the other applications on my Mac. Is there anything I can do? I can't click go back or continue either.

The same thing is happening to me (downloading from UMD), and I don't think it's a corrupt file.... I've re-downloaded the Master Collection .dmg and .dmgpart files and the Web & Design Collection .dmg and .dmgpart files, and the same thing happens when installing either one. I have to force-quit the installer, do a hard reboot on my computer (it won't let me shut down while it thinks the installer is still running), and then uninstall whatever got installed and run the cleaner.
It always freezes up at about 40% of the way through the installation process, "Running package scripts..." The progress bar doesn't advance even a pixel.... I know this because I took screenshots and compared. The "Install Time Remaining" just keeps getting longer and longer, with no apparent change.

  • Long sync times in the new iTunes

Has anyone seen the condition where the Ipod will not sync even after 24 hrs of the sync process? This was not happening until recently. I tried a new wire, redownloading itunes, countless times, nothing works. Any ideas? This condition is happening with an iPod Touch and an iPhone.

  • Long sync times

In syncing ATV with 7500 songs and a few movies why does it take upwards of 8 hrs?

    8 hours does seem excessive.
Yes but are those tunes 3 MB each or 30 MB each, it will make a lot of difference.

  • Long Sync Time...

I have a 64Gb iPod Touch. I have loaded tons of family photos and my kids videos. It takes hours to sync. I dont get any error messages, it just takes hours. Is something wrong? Other then that there is no problem. THank you

    Welcome to the discussions,
try to reduce the number of photos on your device by importing them to your computer and deleting them afterwards from the ipod.
Deleting the photo cache may also speed up the sync process. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314

  • Ridiculously long render length in Premiere CC

    Hi all!
I posted this on the LinkedIn Premiere boards, but no one really had a true answer. Some nice workarounds, but no real solution. I am working on a MacBook Pro 2.7GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with an NVIDIA geForce GT 650M 1024 MB card.
Premiere CS6 gave me very few issues. Sure, things were slowish, but workable.
With Adobe Premiere CC, I am hostage to ridiculously long render times for videos. I am currently working on a video that is 2:35 long - that's TWO MINUTES AND THIRTY-FIVE SECONDS!! - with three video tracks, two audio tracks and 15 total applied transitions between the tracks. I selected Render In to Out and have now been waiting over fifty minutes for this to complete.
I have over 140GB open space on my machine.
The source file is HD, 1440x1080 MP4. All other files are placed graphics and MP3 for an audio bed.
How does it take over an hour to render a video that is shorter than three minutes?!
Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

I get that same delay on rendering to network drives but not when rendering to local SSD. Yea but that long 100% delay on h.264 mp4 file rendering is ridiculous. It used to not do that before the previous update before CC 2014. I noticed it a week or two ago.
To the OP, even with simple timelines, any compression may eat up a lot of time... such as rendering to a lossy codec or any codec for that matter. You may be better off rending to a portable hard drive (via usb 3.0 or greater) a lossless master render and then transcode the master instead of using premiere to transcode.. assuming that's your situation... ??

  • Long sync damaging my iPad?

I've had troubles syncing my iPad to my XP comp since the beginning, but lately he seems to have taken the tendency to take hours to preform the first step of the sync. There are anywhere between 3 and 6 steps when I sync up (depending on what I've added/changed), but always the first one is "Backing up". This is the one that can easily take over an hour to complete, the other ones usually last minutes if not seconds (unless I add a good couple hundred songs/pictures, which I don't really do anymore).
Now, usually I just press the little X in the top part of the window next to the sync progress bar, this seems to skip the backup and move onto the actual transfer of information (making the sync considerably faster, if a little broken). Every now and then I can set aside a few hours to let him do his thing in it's entirety, but lately I've gotten to thinking... These problems are undoubtedly due to my computer being too old, but is it possible that I may be damaging my iPad somehow with these super long syncs? I'm not sure why, but the screen stays on while it's syncing, and the whole computer looks like it's running pretty hard (the Hard Drive spins non-stop during the process).
If my computer ups and dies it's not going to be a big deal (it was given to me, I never even payed anything for it). But all in all I've invested over 900$ into my Pad, and if there's any chance that this is damaging it I'd like to know. If it means going without any new apps or songs until I get my next computer, I can live with that.

    HI,
like it's running pretty hard (the Hard Drive spins non-stop during the process).
Not a good sign. Sounds more like a problem with the computer then anything else.
    Try Disk Cleanup.
Start / Programs / Accessories / System Files / Disk Cleanup
Restart your computer after Disk Cleanup is finished.
Make sure there is enough free space on your computer's hard drive, instructions here.
CHECK FREE SPACE ON WINDOWS XP
Not sure if the long sync time can damage your iPad, but as you mentioned you have invested over $900.
Best to invest in a new computer as soon as it's feasible. If you purchase a new computer make sure and Deauthorize the old one. From the iTunes menu bar click: Store/Deauthorize This Computer...

  • Fix for Incredibly Long Sync...? Going on 4 hours now...

I hear some of you in here complaining about your 5 minute iPhone sync, or how your backup takes 10 minutes alone. Well... my backup, alone, is going on 4 hours as I write this, AND ITS ONLY HALF WAY!
I have some apps I just purcahsed from the app store from my computer and need them synced over. I backed-up my iPhone last night (around an 8 hour process I guess...) and when I go plugging it in now, it has to have another 8 hour back-up?
*This is a pathetic excuse Apple... I think I'd rather NOT have a back-up if its going to take 8 hours.* On the other hand, I have yet to find a way to skip it, and just sync the few, new apps I've downloaded.
I have to leave in about 3 hours... out of town, and I won't be able to sync my iPhone, and I really need the apps I paid for!
Please, please, please, please, please!! I spend all this money on my iPhone that acts like its got 64K of RAM on it...? I need help, shorting my 8-hour back-up, so I can sync my few apps over!

I am no expert, but none of my syncing/backup has ever taken longer than 10 minutes. Before I bought my 3G, I learned about the 3G by reading this forum. This is probably why I have yet to select Automatically Sync when phone is connected, or ever selected Sync Only Checked Songs and Videos. I was (and still am) nervous about long sync times.
So far, I only select Manually Manage Music and Videos. (I also have MobileMe which auto syncs my calendar, address book, and bookmarks--which by the way is terrific--for me). The capacity of my iphone is 14.64 GB, Audio is at 3.29 GB, Video at 5.34 GB, Photos at 37.5 MB, Other is 224.1 MB, and Free Space is at 5.76 GB. So far I have 5 free apps on my Iphone. All of the music I synch are in Playlists and all of the podcasts I synch are in Playlists. Last night I wanted to add to my Iphone a movie I created in Imovie and had published to Itunes and wanted to add a new app I had downloaded to Itunes. I had checked Manually sync on the first screen. It seems that my Iphone prefers if I sync Music first (that does the Playlists of music and podcasts), sync Videos second, which syncs my selected TV shows and Movies (and seems to also synch my photos). I never sync podcasts (because they are in Music playlists, and don't have any checks in this category). Last I sync apps.
When I select sync Music I get msg "All existing content on the Iphone will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from your ITunes library." (My tv shows disappeared from my Iphone.) When I select sync Video, I get msg "All existing songs, movies and TV shows on the Iphone will be removed and replaced with TV shows from your Itunes library. (TV shows were put back on my Iphone, and all my playlists of songs and podcasts were still there. Also, received my iMovie). Last I synced Apps and the new app came onto my Iphone. It took less than 10 minutes.
If I am doing something incorrectly, or short changing myself with above process, please let me know. I do only have 5 apps so far and I don't know how many apps you have.
