Ridiculously simple audio editing question for Garage Band

Ok, so this is really a fundamental
question. It concerns editing technique.
In analog mixing, the editor put
the sounds to be saved in the right
places on each of several tracks --
narration, sound effects, lip sync,
music, etc. The tracks were then
all locked together and the mixer
adjusted the volumes to either save
or reject audio information.
A blank master received the information
and that was your final product,
in sync, sprocket by sprocket, with
the video.
My question, then, is, how do you
do it in digital multitrack such as
Garage Band? Are you aiming to have
4 or 5 tracks all level controlled
or do you simple erase unwanted
sound, or what exactly do you do,
in post production? If you are going
to do a voice over, then you have to
do a mix at some point, not just a
cut and paste. What's the philosophy,
if you don't mind my asking?
Thanks,
Ed

Wow... you gave me flashbacks to a movie soundtrack I scored, with separate reels of tape all synced up and whirling away for final mixdown!
To answer your question as best I can in a paragraph or two, digital mixing is unlimited compared to analog. Whereas tape has a physical limit, you can always add another digital track (there are limitations to digital, but they are becoming harder to reach as systems become increasingly powerful). So no need to erase. Editing is also a breeze. Digital tracks are endlessly malleable, with virtually every parameter available for automation.
Sometimes you might mix down to stems or mix everything down to a stereo master (or alternative mixes) for post production. Similarly, in post, they can deal with huge numbers of digital tracks from different sources.
In terms of a professional workflow, Logic is the more typical choice over Garageband, and includes a number of features designed for scoring to picture: variable sample rates, frame rates, etc.
Gain staging in digital recording is different than in analog, and it requires a different approach to achieve excellent sounding results. But the digital workflow is so much more flexible, forgiving, and economical, that it has been the death-knell for the analog workflow. Infinite bussing, routing, mixing, comping, storing, stemming... infinite possibilities, really!

  • Recording questions for garage band

Hi I thank you in advance for your help, advice or direction in assisting me correct my lack of knowledge.
I recently purchased a macbook and it came with garageband and frankly I love this program!!
I am having a little trouble though with my vocals, I am using a behringer eurorack (the small one) to phantom power my condenser mic and it's plugged directly into my macbook using the typical rca jack. I seem to be getting sort of some distorted really deep vocals out of this. Like instead of recording my energy it's more drowned out kinda layered below the beat. I am not sure what setting I should use for my mixer and the computer. I keep my lows, mids, and hi's kinda half way up on the mixer, my gain is all the way down and my mic output level is a few notches up maybe four bars or so. On garage band I have the mic volume set up almost as high as it can go. Any idea on how I can try to get my mic to sound as normal as possible? Levels you can recommend perhaps..
Man I owe you guys alot... i'm very appreciative of the help thus far.. Thank you all.

Then we've ruled out the chance that you were still recording with your internal mic (it happens more often than you'd think!)
I would suggest turning up the mids and highs if the tone is too deep. Also you should have your gain as high as you can get it without clipping (i.e. before the signal goes into your computer)

  • Editing songs for garage band 08 using itunes. and how to record it to a cd

Garageband is not a audio editor (although it can be used for some editing) it is a multitrack recording studio with a few extras thrown in.
Making playlist and burning CD can all be done in itunes.

  • Just downloaded Yosemite on my Mac and the Yosemite update for Garage Band.  Now when I open an existing Garage Band project and click on a vocal track, a message window says, "Could not find General Audio 10" and have no smart controls.  Help?

Just downloaded Yosemite on my Mac and the Yosemite update for Garage Band.  Now when I open an existing Garage Band project and click on a vocal track, a message window says, "Could not find General Audio 10" and have no smart controls for that track (reverb, etc.)  Help?

Try this fix posted by Robinson Collins:
Re: I downloaded Garage Band 2x and the same note appears: there is no General Audio 10. Please advise. Thank you.
Try this: Go to your menu bar, select "Garageband" and then "Restore Sound Library..."
It can take awhile to download as it's a pretty big library. You might need to also select "Update Sound Library..." after the restore is done.

  • How to contact Apple for Garage Band iPad bugs?

I looked around a little bit, but couldn't find a place to report Garage Band bugs or contact Apple support for Garage Band iPad. I wanted to notify Apple of the problem that bluetooth audio output in Garage Band does not work. (Yes I am aware of the latency, however, this would still appear to be a bug in Garage Band if a user has explicitly set audio output to bluetooth. Not all applications fo Garage Band require zero latency.)

  • Best Midi Keyboard for garage band?

    Hi
is it possible to import wav samples into garage band, and then assign them to an external beat pad to create loops using an external beat pad?
Also, what do you guys think is the best midi keyboard to get for garage band? (if the beat pad thing works, i want to get a keyboard with a beat pad on it)
    THANKS

Here's the link for the M-Audio Keystation 49e 49-Note USB MIDI Controller Keyboard for exactly $89. Oh, and it's Plug and Play, no drivers, no AC power, just plug it into a Mac's USB port.
(And needless to say, I am another happy 49e owner)
Was there a particular reason you were looking at those two keyboards?

  • Seemingly Simple Audio Edits Driving Me Nuts

I have asked about this before, thought I had the proper answer, but alas it would seem not.
After joining audio (in most cases for music transitions) into Connected Storyline, I am often then unable to apply a Transition of perform a Roll Edit because it seems there is a space in there somewhere.  I have tried the suggested remedy of Zooming in, using Position Tool to trim both sides of the edit, then deleting the space in between.  It was explained the problem invovles sub frames which aren't always visible.  Sometimes this works.  It seems like there should be a quicker solution (it's especially cumbersome if your edit is otherwise well timed, and you have to re-tweak it once you pull the edges back,) but if it worked consistently I could live with it.
However, far too frequently, the process is not working, and I am redoing it over and over and over again until somehow it manages to take.  I can end up spending 5 to 10 minutes on a simple audio edit, and needless to say, this is just unacceptable.
Can anyone tell me a reliable way to deal with this, or suggest what I might be doing wrong or something different I can try, because this is making me crazy.  There has got to be an easier way.  Any help appreciated.

dont think ive ever been able to get cross dissolves on audio to work. I now use FCPX as I would Logic or ProTools and I overlap audio clips and put manual fades on them. Actually its worth the extra work coz the joins are usually better. and you have ore control.

  • In the middle of downloading an update for garage band and lost the connection, now the app won't open or finish the download.  Can I reinstall the app without losing my music?

In the middle of downloading an update for garage band and lost the connection, now the app won't open or finish the download.  Can I reinstall the app without losing my music?

The obvious way to resolve this on a computer would be to uninstall the app, then reinstall it, however on an iOS device that would cause all the data assoicated with the app to be thrown away.
Make sure your iTunes library has the latest updates for all your apps, then backup and restore the device. This should pull back a fresh copy of the app from your iTunes library and then give it the data from your device backup.

  • How to get full sound library for Garage Band

I recently purchased the upgrade for Garage Band on my 06 iMac.  I received a huge library of sounds with the upgrade.  However, two days later, we had a power spike and I lost that computer.  So - I bought a New MacBook Pro Retna with the latest version of Garage Band on it, however, it is missing what seems likes hundreds of real instrument sounds.  Any suggestions?  Can't seem to find a way to downlod all thode extra great sounds like strings and sound FX.
    Thanks.

I recently purchased the upgrade for Garage Band on my 06 iMac.
What kind of upgrade did you buy? Jam Packs for GarageBand, like "Symphony Orchestra"? They are not included in the preinstalled version that comes with a new mac.
it is missing what seems likes hundreds of real instrument sounds.
Are loops missing or instruments? If loops are missing, do they appear to greyed out in the loop browser? If they are greyed out, have you pressed the little arrow to the right of the loop name, to download the additional content?
To be able to download the additional content, you have to accept the preinstalled iLife to your AppleID at the AppStore. Sign into the AppStore, go to the "Purchased" tab - "Accept" section, and press the "Accept" button for your iLife apps.
    Regards
    Léonie
If it are the JamPack, that are missing, post back please.

  • I can't get background audio to work in garage band 1.3 ios6.1 .also no options in settings to turn it on?

I can't get background  audio to work in garage band 1.3 iOS 6.1 also no option in settings to turn on or off?

I had the same problem, try this:
In your home directory, go to Library/Caches/
(make sure you are in the library in your home directory, not the library at the root level of the hard disk).
    and remove this file: com.apple.audiounits.cache
You can drag it to your desktop if you like or throw it away.
Then relaunch garage band, it will rescan all audio units.
If you have the Kontakt audio unit installed in YourHardDiskName/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components it should recognize it and include it in your list. You can toss that cache file any time you want Garage Band to rescan your audio units.
I had a problem with Kontakt on an upgrade that broke it, GarageBand saw it and put Kontakt on its list of broken Audio Units, it would never load it after that... after a new rescan, it was fine.
    Good luck

  • Audio-In for Garage Band on new 13" MBP?

    Hi
The new 13" MBP's have a combined audio in/out port on the side, unlike the larger models which have separate input and output ports. Is it possible to configure Garage band to take input from a guitar connected to this port (with suitable adapter)? I have tried but got no result. Maybe there is something in the settings that I missed.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

I'm guessing that the adapter you've tried is a 'stereo' mini-plug with three contact bands instead of four.
By observation, Apple earphones _with microphone_ designed for newer MacBook Pros (and iPods that allow recording) have a fourth contact band on the mini-plug.
You may also need to go to system preferences and change sound preferences to select input.
An alternative would be a USB audio device designed for input from your guitar.
