Ridiculously slow mdadm reshape / grow

I had a software RAID5 setup with mdadm and my onboard RAID-controller. It was a 4x1TB RAID5 giving me a total of 3TB. Yesterday I added one more 1TB disk with these commands
mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdf1
mdadm --grow /dev/md0 --raid-devices=5 --backupfile=/mnt/temp/backupfileraid5
In the begining the speed was around 13MB/s but today when I checked the progress, this is what I saw:
# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
md0 : active raid5 sdf1[4] sde1[0] sdc1[3] sdb1[2] sdd1[1]
2930279424 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [5/5] [UUUUU]
[>....................] reshape = 3.6% (35387136/976759808) finish=58349.5min speed=267K/sec
unused devices: <none>
# cat /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min
30000
And I don't read or write to the array, so that is not the problem.
Does anyone have any creative ideas how to increase the reshape speed? :S

I am using
5 2 TB drives
24gb ddr3
x58m board
Xeon 5550 CPU
This is what I am getting with nearly the same storage setup
root@xxxxxxxf(/etc) $ cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
md0 : active raid5 sdf1[5] sdb1[0] sde1[4] sdd1[2] sdc1[1]
      5589036288 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [5/5] [UUUUU]
      [========>............]  reshape = 44.7% (832884860/1863012096) finish=706.3min speed=24306K/sec
Here is the settings I used to do it. You might want to use slightly smaller or larger stripe cache_size depending how much ram you have.
echo 6144 >> /sys/block/md3/md/stripe_cache_size
echo 75000 >> /sys/block/md3/md/sync_speed_min
echo 225000 >> /sys/block/md3/md/sync_speed_max
* The tweak will go away after a reboot unles syou add it to a boot up file. My reshape was going to take 3600 minutes I made the change and it dropped to 1100 minutes *
The speeds are pretty safe min/max
Adjust the cache in 1024 increments start at 3072 and go up  use top and watch for sillyness and back it off a bit if it is getting hammered
It has already gone up while typing this.
Personalities : [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]

how do a get a refund on a ridiculously slow downloading rented movie for my apple tv dispite a >5mb/sec down load speed? my first experience with appletv movie rental. no good. rented at 4:30pm. still waiting for standard def movie to finish at 8:10pm. Not good enough.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

It just does't sync. I connect it to itunes, but nothing happens. Where it says how much space I have, it's just on ebig bar that says other. I can play my music on itunes, but not when i unplug it.
All of my photos were gone, i took and saved them with my ipod.
The photo app is saying restoring.
    What should i do?

  • Does iCal's speed slow as file grows?

I'm concerned that iCal is going to slow down as the program gets loaded up with events and to do lists.
Is anybody using iCal for a small business making 20 to 30 entries per day and seeing a slowdown in the program's speed?
We sync. iCal with three computers and we need the program remain fast to use and sync. for our staff.
Is this free iCal program adequate for a small business or should I be looking at a program like Now Up to Date & Contact for my needs?
I spoke to support at BusySync (busymac.com) as an alternative to .Mac sync. for iCal and they said the had no reports of iCal slowing down as the file gets larger.
    Any comments are appreciated.

It's worse than that, iCal doesn't seem to slow as files grow, it seems to slow randomly and no one on this forum has the faintest idea why. Search "slow" and look back. There are hundreds of entrys from people who've experienced iCal slowing to a snail's pace and no one has a solution. I made the mistake of moving my business (maybe 1 or 2 entries a day) to iCal and now I'm stuck waiting 10 seconds everytime I want to make the smallest change. AM to PM - 10 seconds, one calendar to another - 10 seconds. It takes even longer to duplicate an entry or copy an entry. I tried to change fourteen entries to a different calendar today and had to sit through seven minutes of the spinning beachball waiting for that simple change. It doesn't sync reliably with the four other Macs I own and I'm also convinced it's crashing iTunes on me everytime I try to sync Contacts and Calendars. I've been a Mac devotee since 1987 and I swear this is the worst single program Apple has ever written. In System 9 I was able to write a better calendar program in Hypercard. It's not worth the time it takes to install. I'd think twice before I used it for anything important!
I wish someone would at least acknowledge the problem!!!!

  • Ridiculously slow performance with WRT320N

Hello all.  My name is Ben Herrmann.  I'm running a Windows 7 64 Bit machine and am using a Motorola cable modem.  I have the WRT320N wireless router attached.  My PC is connected via ethernet cable to the machine - but the other two laptops are connected via wireless to the router.
Normally, my connection speed when connected to the Motorola modem ranges anywhere from 15,000 to 21,000 kbps.  I have North Carolina Road Runner service Turbo Boost and just with that setup my download speeds are awesome.
However, with the WRT320N router attached, my internet and download speeds have screeched to a whoppingly slow 978 to 1100 kbps.  I realized that adding a router may slow things down a bit - but not by this shocking level.
What am I doing wrong?  I set up everything the way it was supposed to be.  I even installed the the LinkSys Easy Advisor software.  The Cable company can't help me because on their end, things are coming to me at high speed.  So it's obviously the router.
How do I install firmware (if it needs it)?  How do I determine what my current firmware is?  Lots of questions here - but short of an answer, I'm just ready to "can" this router and go out and look for something better.
    Thanks in advance...
    Ben Herrmann

Well, I took a chance and contacted LinkSys tech support. But this guy was extraordinary.
Prior to contacting tech support, my download speeds with the router attach ranged between 512 and 950 kbps - a ridiculously slow speed considering I'm on a high speed cable network.  But after he was finished messing with my settings (he took control of my PC), he got my download speeds up to 22,000 - 25,000 kbps - the same speed I was getting if I just had my cable modem (and no router).
So I'm very, very appreciative to his support and I never envisioned getting these types of speeds with a router attached.

  • Ridiculously Slow Performance when Movie Scoring - brand new macbook

Hello there guys ! Sorry for my bad english, i will try to do my best.
The title almost says it all. I have a brand new Intel Core Duo Macbook (White, 2ghz, 512 ram, I haven't added any extra ram or anything).
The machine is blazing fast, I am really loving the experience. But when it comes to using a feature I would love to use everyday, it disappointed me. The movie score feature in Garage Band 3. So, I create a very simple movie in iMovie HD 6, capturing video from my fireware camera.
It is a very simple video, no soundtracks, just the original sound that came with the camcorder footage. No stills, reverse, slow-motion, effects or anything. Plain video with sound, just the way it came from the camcorder.
The problem is when creating a movie scoring project with that footage in garageband 3 , the performance is RIDICULOUSLY SLOW. I mean, I press space and the movie strats playing after 1,5 seconds, and the video is halting every other second. It is so laggy that when i press space again to stop the video, the motion continues for another 1,5 seconds until it pauses.
There's absolutely no way to do any work in conditions like that. And the strange thing is that when using garage band to do other stuff, or when working in iMovie with that same movie there's no lag at all. I have even edited 30 minute long videos with effects and soundtracks in iMovie and it was blazing fast, no lag, no halting.
But in Garagaband even the simplest of all videos gets this ultra-slow performance, and it makes me wonder why.
    - I have tried desabling recording on the audio track in garageband. I have tried to lock the track. I have done all the steps in the optimizing garage band performance in the help. I don't have firevault activated.
Any help ? Does anyone have a macbook just like mine that is able of doing moving scoring ? Because EVERYTHING ELSE is ultra fast, including video and audio editing, but when movie scoring it *****.
    Apple Macbook 13inch 2.0ghz Core Duo 512 60GB White SuperDrive   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Ha! It's funny really - you say it all yourself; no extra ram, it doesn't come with enough to run Pro Apps and when you start to use the Scoring feature you are accessing two different functions - playing movies and music tracks - movies are always a stress unless they are very small and the Right Codec - so first up - what format is your movie? Do you have Quicktime Pro? if the answer is No - get it, it's not expensive and it gives your machine many extra abilities - you can then convert your footage to something easy to play.
How many tracks are you working with?
Get more RAM - MacIntel or MacPro needs 4-6 gigs to multi-task happily - with only the base load of RAM it can't.
I have a DP 2 Ghz G5, no where near as fast as yours but I have 4.5 GBs of RAM and a fast graphics card with 512Mbs VRAM - this means Motion and FCP can fly.
We are about to get a MacPro 2.66 Dual with 6 GBs RAM, essential.
    Hope this helps.

  • ITunes is ridiculously slow.  What gives?

I just bought a new computer, doubled my storage and RAM, Windows 8.  Now, iTunes is ridiculously slow.  What gives?

I can only add my XPS M1530 to the list of computers having the problem. I have seen posts back to the beginning of the year, so I suspect it is a problem Apple isn't interested in and it is likely a problem with their DirectX or other video routines gone bad.
Maybe they'll consider taking this as a formal bug and getting it fixed, because coverflow ***** as is while it is dreamy on the iPhone.

  • MBP 2011 ridiculously slow after installing Yosemite

Installed Yosemite last Friday night and it's ridiculously slow.  I click on the Safari icon and it took more than 4 minutes to open... If I try to open a new tab, it tells me that it's not Responding.  Before the upgrade, it took 2-3 seconds to open Safari/etc.  I opened a Terminal window and don't see that it's encrypting the hard drive.  Not sure if it's indexing but this is BAD!
    Suggestions welcomed!!

  • Writing to BLOB gets slow as table grows

    Hi,
We have a table with a BLOB column. When the table is empty it takes a few second to insert 3k rows. As the table grows to 500k rows, it takes almost 5 minutes to insert the same # of rows, and it's getting slower and slower. At the beginning, I thought it was because of indexes and constraints, so I disabled all foreign key constraints (have to leave primary keys and indexes there), it doesn't make much difference. I don't see other tables with indexes and constraints and even more # of rows but w/o BLOB column have such significant performance degradation. The BLOB is stored out of line in a separate tablespace with 8k block size and chunk size.
Do you have any idea what may cause the slowness in insert?
    Thanks.

If the tablespace is ASSM (segment space management AUTO), there are issues with LOB performance. If you can, move the table and it's LOB to an MSSM tablespace and re-test your inserts.
BTW, what version and patchlevel are your running ?

  • Pasting from Word ridiculously slow

Hi I wonder if anyone has had this problem:
When I paste from Word (Word 2004 for Mac) to ID 5 it takes a ridiculously long time--maybe a full mintue for 10 lines or so.
I am a book designer and going back and forth from Word to ID all day long--this is driving me crazy (it only started in the past month or so).
I often PLACE (which is also very slow, but it makes more sense since it brings in the formatting) but sometimes I need to PASTE short bits of text and it is excruciating!
Anyone else have this trouble? Know how to fix it?
    Any suggestions, much appreciated.

Thanks for responding, Gail. Yes, I am copying and pasting properly. I had no problem whatsoever pasting Word into Mail until I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion.
As far as the other question goes, I will put off taking a lot of time trying to get through to Microsoft Word for as a long as I can!
    Leslie
Just tested. No problem with cut & paste here from Word to Mail. Using Office 2011 (14.3.2) which opens all my old word files. You could try Pager or OpenOffice to try to open your old .docs if you wish, but I would try uninstalling and reinstalling MS Office first. Should not be acting like this, and have never had a copatability problem.

  • ITunes Store ridiculously slow

I have a £25 iTunes voucher, and so I tried to buy a song today on iTunes. BIG MISTAKE, it's currently been downloading for 5-10 minutes, and is at '448kb - 3 hours remaining'.
This is ridiculous - I have a fine connection - Spotify would just play the track, Amazon would download it in 3 minutes. I can't see how I'm going to be able to spend any of my store credit if it's like this. Sort it out Apple. This is a joke.

There's tons of people in Australia also experiencing majorly slow downloads from the iTunes store, which is completely abnormal.
This problem has troubled me since November 3, and so far it's been getting worse. I used to be able to download at over 2 Megabytes/sec from the store, now downloads are crawling at anything from 30 to 200 k/sec

  • System running ridiculously slow after installing Yosemite and Adobe CC

SInce installing Yosemite and upgrading to Adobe CC for all my design apps, my computer runs soooooo slow. Since then, I've run all the disk utility stuff and upgraded from 8gb to 12gb of RAM. That about ends my knowledge. I ran EntreCheck with report below. Any insight on what to do would be HUGELY appreciated.

Thanks so much for the detailed instructions...but they didn't seem to work.
At this point I've erased the drive and reinstalled Yosemite. I haven't brought any files or applications back in yet, but things are still moving really slow. Here's my latest EntreCheck report. Any insight would be very helpful.
    Problem description:
sytstem, even after a bringing it back to factory settings, is still running really really slow

  • Why is my iMac running ridiculously slow now?!

My iMac has been solid, but getting slower over time naturally.  About 2 days ago after trying to open OpenOffice software, my iMac performed slower than ever - so much so that I had to force it to shut down.  Since then, no matter what I try to do, it is SLOW & locks up to where I have to force shut down the computer.  I looked at the activity monitor & it doesn't seem like anything is running unusually high.  Kernel_task takes up about 190.4 MB of Real Memory & about 1.5% of CPU.  Everything else seems okay, but I don't know what most of the processes are.  Those processes are shown below.  I did an Etrecheck & posted my results below as well.  I'm hoping someone can help me decipher this & hopefully get back computer back to normal!  Thanks in advance for any help!

It definitely shows only 2 GBs of RAM, however, your system seems to be doing pretty well with just 2 GBs. I agree with kostby about the hard drive. A failing status is a major sign the drive is failing, and a failing drive could be the basic cause of a system running slow.
For memory I would recommend any one of these:
    OWC
    DataMem
    Crucial.com
Both OWC and DataMem vend hard drives, too.

  • Time machine ridiculously slow since upgrading to Lion

    Hiya,
I have a Macbook Pro and an Apple TimeCapsule, since upgrading to Lion last week, it is having stupidly slow throughput, i've had to cancel the backups as i don't have the hours in the day to let it complete.  this isn't a 3rd party device, it's a 1TB native Apple TimeCapsule.  Is anyone else seeing this speed issue?  It's making the Macbook run super hot too while it sits backing up so slowly.
Since the update it now wants to backup 8GB which at this rate will take all week!
Please tell me i'm not going mad
    Many thanks,
    Emma.

The first backup after installing lion is going to take a while due to all of the new files and such. I also noticed that lion does a lot of file indexing after installation, both for spotlight AND time machine disks. When checking out processes, mdworker/mdworker32/mds (all indexing services from what I understand) were running for 1 or 2 days, but now the HDD activity (and time machine backups) are back to "normal".
My advice is to leave your Mac on overnight for 1 or 2 nights so it can get caught up...
