Ridiculously Slow Speeds

I've used Verizon in various services for years on my own, never had much problems with them. I then moved in and started taking care of my very elderly grandfather, he uses Verizon internet/phone. He has the 3.1-7mbps connection, and for the $50+ he pays I don't consider it a great deal in the least. But, the point is for the last year since March of last year till about march of this year we reguarly got about 3mbps off and on, despite the fact the service is for 3.1-7 MBPS I have never seen above I think 3.5 in any test every done. Well for the last month give or take, that's tanked into the crapper hard, last few days it's been about 1.2mbps if lucky. My grandfather wanted to get FIOS, cause it was fast and decently affordable but verizon refuses to install it cause apperntly something about being in a manufactured home park is against their policy or some crap.
So I decided to post on these great forum, hoping perhaps someone could point me in a direction. I tried using the 'help' files and I use that word lightly to see if they had any recomondations and about laughed myself to death as one of their 'recomondations' is to clean your HDD and have plenty of space which in no way would effect internet speed. So here I am. I have run several different speed tests on several different sites and different places. Averaing a 34ms ping, 1.2mbps down, .75mbps up. Am wondering if I am going to be forced to get a Tech to come out and do real physical work out here.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon
news.giganews.com
traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
    1 gw1-g-vlan201.dca.giganews.com (216.196.98.4) 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms
    2 ash-bb1-link.telia.net (213.248.70.241) 39 ms 7 ms 7 ms
    3 TenGigE0-2-0-0.GW1.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.125.125.41) 4 ms 4 ms GigabitEthernet2-0-0.GW8.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.65.76.189) 4 ms
    4 so-7-1-0-0.PHIL-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net (130.81.20.137) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
    5 P3-0-0.PHIL-DSL-RTR11.verizon-gni.net (130.81.13.170) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
    6 static-71-242-*-*.phlapa.east.verizon.net (71.242.*.*) 32 ms 32 ms 33 ms
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

  • Hit my record with BT's ridiculous slow speed.

Once again, slow speeds for no reason.
Probably because of their "remote" adjustments to my line - that's how they fixed my speed problems before anyway.
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/994037830.png
Without doubt, this is the worst speed and ping I ever, EVER had. Worse than dial-up. Thank you, my weekend has been wasted.

    I can't take BT seriously anymore, it's a **bleep**ing joke.
A guy threw my mail through my door, I went to pick it up, then went back to my PC and what do I see?
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/994705945.png
So, my theory is this. The vibrations the guy made with his attempt to slip the mail caused BT line go ape**bleep**, thus completely ruining my broadband for this entire day. Quality, top notch quality.
Update 1: I used the test socket behind the plate, the result:
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/994713166.png
Still not perfect though, the ping goes up and down randomly (from 50 to 1400). This is going to be a lot of fun.
Update 2: Just to show you how random it is, here a few more tests:

Did a BT speedtest as well:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 910 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

  • Ridiculously slow speeds - bt are a joke

Someone care to explain to me why this has happened 3 times in the last 3 months? This is just stupid. AND NO! I DON'T WANT A NEW HUB, THAT ISN'T THE PROBLEM, STOP SENDING ME HUBS!
If anyone could please tell why BT aren't doing anything about this everytime this happens that would be great.

    Hi Nathan
    Welcome to the forum,
Clearly you are having some problems with your internet connection.
Firstly, it's important to understand that total broadband is line adaptive, and what that means is, in effect your connection is only as good as your phone line, with respect to noise levels and your distance from the exchange.
So whilst your connection is poor at the moment, it may be that something in the home is causing your problems, and not anything to do with the BT network.
Try and read the self help iinformation here:
    http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cci/bt_adp.php?p_sid=&p_faqid=12666&cat_lvl1=346&p...
Also if you can, try and post your hubs line stats, so we can see what's going on, then we'll be able to help you further.

  • Ridiculously slow performance with WRT320N

Hello all.  My name is Ben Herrmann.  I'm running a Windows 7 64 Bit machine and am using a Motorola cable modem.  I have the WRT320N wireless router attached.  My PC is connected via ethernet cable to the machine - but the other two laptops are connected via wireless to the router.
Normally, my connection speed when connected to the Motorola modem ranges anywhere from 15,000 to 21,000 kbps.  I have North Carolina Road Runner service Turbo Boost and just with that setup my download speeds are awesome.
However, with the WRT320N router attached, my internet and download speeds have screeched to a whoppingly slow 978 to 1100 kbps.  I realized that adding a router may slow things down a bit - but not by this shocking level.
What am I doing wrong?  I set up everything the way it was supposed to be.  I even installed the the LinkSys Easy Advisor software.  The Cable company can't help me because on their end, things are coming to me at high speed.  So it's obviously the router.
How do I install firmware (if it needs it)?  How do I determine what my current firmware is?  Lots of questions here - but short of an answer, I'm just ready to "can" this router and go out and look for something better.
    Thanks in advance...
    Ben Herrmann

Well, I took a chance and contacted LinkSys tech support. But this guy was extraordinary.
Prior to contacting tech support, my download speeds with the router attach ranged between 512 and 950 kbps - a ridiculously slow speed considering I'm on a high speed cable network.  But after he was finished messing with my settings (he took control of my PC), he got my download speeds up to 22,000 - 25,000 kbps - the same speed I was getting if I just had my cable modem (and no router).
So I'm very, very appreciative to his support and I never envisioned getting these types of speeds with a router attached.
    Ben

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • Very slow speeds and ridiculous email and bill for...

    Hi
i have several issues. I have been a very satisfied customer for over 15 years until early summer of this year:
    1. My broadband speeds remain painfully slow despite 3 complaints and investigations. In fact my line is still connected to the test line as I was advised to do and I have never had a call back as promised.
    2. I have now received an email message to say I have used 90gb at a cost of £50. This is almost all uploads. i upload nothing and this figure is impossible. Until June my usage was quite small and I came nowhere near my limit on option 2. Nothing has changed with my usage since then. I do not download or stream films and do not upload large quantities. I probably would stream films, but the slow speed does not allow it.
    3. I spent over an hour on the phone trying to sort this out today, but was not helped by a succession of people who barely understood the situation and had even less understanding of customer service. I have now emailed, but have had a message saying it might be 72 hours before a reply.
Any advice would be really helpful as I am at my wits end
    Solved!

Ok....since the original post the problem has continued. I have spent literally hours on the phone to people who say all the same things and never come up with a solution.
The test results are below. I do not experience speeds as reported. And if I use another tester it correctly comes out as about 1 4 - 1.9. or even lower. The upload usage is still showing as high....but it is just not possible. I have now reset the hub wireless key, but I have not shared this with anyone in range. Apple TV is now disconnected after it was going to take 20 hours to download a film!
I am at my wits end with this and really do not want the hassle of changing provider but even after 20 years BT broadband I am so very close to that.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Which Mac Pro? More cores=slower speeds? And most of us know the speed matters or FPU for music and I don't understand the faster is for the least amount of procs. And while I get the whole rendering thing and why it makes sense.
The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow. W-O-W and will be using whatever I get with Apollo Quad.
Peace to all and hope someone can point us in THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  THANK YOU

I read that the CPU is easy to swap out but am sure something goes wrong at a certain point - even if solderedon they make material to absorb the solder, making your work area VERY clean.
My Question now is this, get an 8 core, then replace with 2 3.7 QUAD CHIPS, what would happen?
I also noticed that the 8 core Mac Pro is 3.0 when in fact they do have a 3.4 8 core chip, so 2 =16? Or if correct, wouldn't you be able to replace a QUAD CHIP WITH THAT?  I;M SURE THEY ARE UO TO SOMETHING AS 1) WE HAVE SEEN NO AUDIO FPU OR PERHAPS I SHOULD CHECK OUT PC MAKERS WINDOWS machines for Sisoft Sandra "B-E-N-C-H-M-A-R-K-S" -
SOMETHINGS UP AND AM SURE WE'LL ALL BE PLEASED, AS the mac pro      was announced Last year, barely made the December mark, then pushed to January, then February and now April.
Would rather wait and have it done correct than released to early only to have it benchmarked in audio and found to be slower in a few areas- - - the logical part of my brain is wondering what else I would have to swap out as I am sure it would run, and fine for a while, then, poof....
PEACE===AM SURE APPLE WILL BLOW US AWAY - they have to figure out how to increase the power for 150 watts or make the GPU work which in regard to FPU, I thought was NVIDIA?

  • Slow speeds. Apparently I don't have a bt broadban...

After using bt's own e-form to email them about my long running loss of speed over the year from 2.6mb for the last say 10 years, to 1.6mb (1.4mb at its lowest) download / 0.36 up. ping latency around 0.38 i think, apart from today where its 42.25!! what's that?!
All I've got back so far is:
"Recently you requested personal assistance from our on-line support centre. Below is a summary of your request and our response.
If this issue is not resolved to your satisfaction, you may reopen it within the next 14 days.
Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you. " ....and....
"This is in regards to the e-mail you have send on 20th August 2014. We are sorry to inform you that there is no sufficient information in the e-mail to pull up any active broadband account. We would request you to provide the details of your broadband account so that we can pull up the account and help you further."
Just to be clear, their OWN e-form didn't have enough information for them to find my account??? It asks for my name, address, phone number my broadband is on, email address, my account number (assume its the BT account as that's all I have), plus the problem. What else can I type in if there's no other fields.
So I submitted the form. A couple of days later I got an email back with the above included in it.
    1. Why automatically close the call? They hadn't resolved anything, so why close it? The only other thing they mentioned was going onto their Help pages (durr how did i manage to use their e-form in the first place?).
    2. No mention of what these missing "details" are. (On purpose?)
So I replied and being a little annoyed at their poor response,  which just sounds like "yep dealt with that call within the response time target I got to make".
I've had BT broadband since its inception, even before, but they cannot find my account? Amazing they can bill me each quarter without any problems. So I sent my bt account number again even thought it was included in the e-form. Asked them clearly to tell me what "details" of my broadband account they need from me. More than happy to oblige. Oh, and no I'm not satisfied with their resolution and re-open the call!!
So some more days have now passed and guess what. I get an email with the exact same text!!
I replied. In CAPITAL LETTERS for the hard of hearing. What specific details do you want from me?
    I wait in baited breath.
OMG I haven't even got onto the problem of the slow speed issue yet!
I guess they want me to phone (premium 0800 number?), or do something myself. I don't want to phone them as I've experienced the same ol' routine before, life's too short. I've paid the top price for ever, so I would think they could do some of the leg work eh? I mean part of the cost is the support they provide, right? How do you lose a broadband account?
It niggles me is that I pay same price infinity customers do and I'm still stuck in the dial-up speed ages. And don't get me on about those tv ads. Like everyone can get infinity. Yeah I'm still waiting after 5 years that it was coming. Amazing the Isles of Scilly with about 10 people living on there manage to get it quicker than me living in a town in the middle of the UK. I digress...
If I can do a speed test from both their bt.com site and btwholesale speed test and get a poor speed (approx 1.8 max) from exchange to router then I know by the time it gets to my pc its not going to be 2.6 is it.
PS i don't have a master socket/test socket to try. its the old type. And why has the speed just dropped and kept down (like for so many others in this forum), where nothing has changed, at least at the customers end of the line.
I don't expect someone in the forum to come up with the solution, but its more of a rant on my part at the poor response to my request, let alone some kind of investigation into the problem itself.
I work in "IT" and part of it is dealing with calls from customers. If I had dealt with a call like BT had then I'd be getting a ear bashing from my manager.

  • Slow speeds, almost dead, can't figure out what's ...

Hi all, I've had very slow speeds from my homehub for almost a week. I've tried a factory reset on the hub to no avail. I also spoke to technical support in India I think, but they were no help.
When I perform a speed check the speed from the exchange to my house is fine, it's after that it dies a death.
I've checked all cables and it is not cabling after the hub as this problem effects internet tv's that are connected via ethernet cable and others that are wireless and also tablets that work on wifi.
In the last week I have had download speeds as low as 0.03 and for only a few hours last Monday has it been OK all of a sudden. I presumed a fix elsewhere but the problem came back an hour or two later.
At the moment we can't use iplayer, youtube and every webpage takes ages to load. It's quite horrible.
Has anyone got any idea's what could be wrong and are there any diagnostic tests I can run on the hub to see if it's borked.

  • Slow speed/high SNR margin after upgrade to ADSL2+...

I have an issue with slow speed that I am suspecting is caused by a high SNR margin (about 12dB) which has come about (I believe) due to the fact that my router was repeatedly reset during the first few days of the upgraded service. The exchange was upgraded to ADSL2+ on 3rd January.
I have a US Robotics 9108 which has worked fine for nearly six years. I was getting around 8Mbps before the upgrade which isn't far off the theoretical maximum.
There was a problem with my router and I only found it to be my router at fault over the last few days. Upgrading its firmware has cured the problem which was that requests weren't being fulfilled once connection had been established, (seemingly particularly when this was ADSL2+ or ADSL2 mode). Consequently, I reset my router in these instances and I believe that this will have been interpretted by the exchange as being due to line noise. In general, I disabled ADSL2 and 2+ modes on my router to force it back to G.DMT and it usually worked fine (albeit slow sync rate relative to that I had before 3rd January).
During fault conditions, the connection synced OK. I recently borrowed a router and tried it and it immediately connected faster than mine had done previously and I could access the web without issue. This confirmed that my US Robotics was at fault, and after downloading its latest firmware, it fixed the problem.
There is no bell wire as there are no hard wired extensions from the master socket. I use a single filter which plugs directly into the master socket (i.e. no extension lead to the filter).
I was using a BT filter (MF50) I got in 2004 when I first got broadband. This came with a Voyager 100 modem and is a rebranded YCL one. I have since replaced this with a Z350-UK which I have borrowed. The US Robotics didn't come with any filters.
With the BT filter, caller display does not work at all when the router is connected in ADSL2 mode. In G.DMT mode the problem with caller display was intermittent. The Z350-UK has rectified the problem with caller display not working when in ADSL2 mode. I have ordered a Pressac Interstitial VDSL Faceplate as a perminant solution.
Do I need to contact the support helpline to get this fixed? Or will the SNR margin drop over time? As I say, I got around 8Mbps before the upgrade.
I am presently connected in 2+ mode and stats are:
    SNR margin (dB):

  • I can no longer burn CDs  - "may be incompatible with this disc burner, try slower speed, try another make of disc"  Still doesn't work

I can no longer burn CDs  - "may be incompatible with this disc burner, try a slower speed, try another make of disc"  Tried that, still doesn't work.

Try a free burning utility which allows you to turn off the laser for test burning (so you don't waste media).  Try burning a test CD outside of iTunes.  If it works it's iTunes. If it doesn't work it could be computer software or hardware but then we know how to proceed.

  • Extremely slow speeds on Windows Computers with 5th Generation AirPort Extreme

I just got a new refurbished AirPort Extreme 5th generation. Everything works great for all of my OS X devices and iOS Devices. I am getting my ISPs speeds when doing tests. The issue is when I am using Windows devices. My roommate has a desktop and a netbook and both are getting extremely slow speeds. Speeds like .07Mbps down. Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

You have no large file?? Really.. in the whole computer there is not a windows update file.. a backup file... a movie download file.. nothing.. ??
Anyway that is irrelevant.. the issue is wireless.
Download the latest drivers from the wireless manufacturer.
You will need to find out what wireless card is used and locate the correct download for that model.
On the Airport it is well worth doing the following tests.
    1. Change the name to SMB standard.. short no spaces pure alphanumeric.
So if your wireless name is Fred Blog's Airport Extreme wireless
    Plesae change it to AEwifi
    2. Take off all security for a test.
    3. Set channels.. I am guessing the computers are only using 2.4ghz, so set 11,6, 1 in that order.
No improvement.. just put the security back to WPA2 Personal with pure alphanumeric password..
Try and test new drivers and use no firewalls on the computer.. ensure that the computer is correctly set for home network.
Beyond that it is just incompatible.

  • Broadband slow speed, ongoing since end of april

Hi,i have been suffering slow speeds and dropping out since end of april,i have had 9 engineers out,but still no wiser.
I use a desk top and laptop and have problems on both, running at 8 meg, cant open web pages,or do internet shopping, engineer blames the websites.
i am a 2 min walk from the exchange,
if i take my laptop to my sisters 4 miles away it works fine, and shes only on 2 meg.
I had an it consultant round who did a ping test from laptop to router, and router to exchange, laptop to router was fine, but the router to exchange keeps timing out 19 times in 5 mins, where as my sisters did it once in 40 mins.
i have opened a little square bt box from my socket box to the wiring outside, wiring looks in poor condition with wires not actually connected to anything, engineers say that wouldnt affect it,

    Hi Efcpaul
I can take a look at this for you.
Send an email to [email protected] with your BT account number, telephone number and a link to this thread.
    Cheers
