Right click not selecting layer

I have been using a trial version of Photoshop CS5 and have noticed that when I right click on a layer, the list of layers comes up like usual, but the actual layer i am on is not selected. Is this a bug of CS5? This gets rather annoying when you have a lot of layers and would like to get directed on the layer pallet just by clicking on the layer on the stage. Has anyone else found this a problem?

… makes no sense. Or means something different to what you intended. As a guess try these…
• Upgrade your trial to 12.0.1.
• As C… suggests, Command clicking with the Move Tool auto-selects any layer you click on. There is also an option in the move tool called "auto select'  that you can change, which toggles this behavior.

  • Click to select layer(s) missing in CS5?

Just upgraded to CS5 from CS3...long-time Photoshop pro user. I have always simply clicked an element in the photohsop image which selected that layer. Holddown shift while clicking several layers selected all those layers. Not it seems the only way to not use the layers palette to select layers is by right-clickingon EACH layer and then selecting that layer from a right flyout contextual menu. Is this a change? Why does the Adobe team change things like this. We power users are programmed to work fast using this kind of shortcut, and now so many of my shortcuts are changed. Another example is that when in the layer adjustment/curves palette, I used to be able to use command + 1,2,3 to select R G and B channels to edit. Now it has been changed to something else, option + 3,4 and 5!! WTH?
Please, someone get back to me on this layer selection question. Setting somewhere? I just want to be able to quickly click on something in the image to select that layer without right-clicking, flyout, select blah blah blah.

With the Move Tool active, check the Auto-Selection option in the option panel...you can choose either Layers or Groups...and as with any update, it's useful if you learn how to use it. BTW, did you know whith any tool selected, holding Command/Control allows you to see a context menu with all the layers currently under the cursor? Most power users find this function more efficient than using Auto-Select.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.

  • Right-Click to Select Layers

I usually right click to select an object in my workspace. When there are groups however they show up in the context menu no matter where I click. When working on something with ~15-30 groups this can be very frustrating.
Is there a way to make groups not show up when I right click?

This has happened to me a few times. And every time I forget what I did to fix it... lol
    BUT...
I figured out that I was in Quick Mask Mode for some reason.... (hitting 'Q' on the keyboard gets you there.)
Hitting 'Q' again to get out of the mode and suddenly... right-click with the Move Tool works again!!!
btw, deleting the preferences does nothing to remedy this. Apparently being in Quick Mask Mode is not affected by preferences and stays selected even when you quick the program.

  • HT1766 under how to restore it says right click then select restore.  I only get eject as an option why

under how to restore it says right click then select restore.  I only get eject Why?

The devices that are listed are: 2 under the name of the device that synced incorrectly with mine and then 3 others that are not associated with my itouch. The name of the ipod, before the incorrect sycning is no longer under devices.  It has been replaced with the incorrect one because I can see the serial # of my ipod under the wrong name.
The playlists that are in my itunes library are from an ipod that I used a few times before I took this one over... Which happens to be the ipod that took on the ID of my itouch.
Both of these ipods used to be my kids.. I used my sons a few times and then switched to my daughters.  They each had their names attachted to their particular devices and now it just says my sons, which is the ipod that itunes was connecting to when all this happened. The really strange thing is my son doesnt use his ipod any longer and now uses his phone for music...So, it had been a while since that particular device was even synced to itunes!
    I hope this helps!

  • Right-click Flash selection of webcams no longer works. Bug?

After some tense struggles and several failed webcam swaps, our support team discoverd that using right-click to select a webcam no longer works after our hosted service's recent upgrade. Is this necessary, or a bug?

Yes, the menu driven webcam selection process works fine. It's just the old way to select webcam source that no longer works. The worst part is there's no indication that the selection process that has always worked no longer works. Hence my technican swapping webcams, assuming they aren't working.

  • Floating menus suck! We should be able to right click to select tools, menus...

Could you please improve Illustrator so that users can access all of the tools using the right click or middle click button (like in Maya)? It is SO much easier. Floating menus are annoying and get in the way. All tools and menus should be accessable with the mouse. This should also apply to things like the layers menu. I should be able to right click on a layer and access the layers submenu, so that I can do simple things like deleting a layer without having to drag it to the trash. Adobe really needs to take better advantage of the multi-button mouse. Speaking of which, when will somebody finally invent a 5 button mouse? If I can use all 5 fingers to type, it makes sense that I should be able to use all 5 to give greater power to my mouse.
And another thing, why can't I go to document setup to see what size my document is anymore? The new artboard features are a fine option, but most of the time I build a file at one size and therefore should be able to simple go to document setup to see what that size is.

Sounds to me like Microsoft logic: If two buttons are good, ten must be great!
No thank you. You can buy a 5-button (plus wheel…What a deal!) Microsoft mouse at any Office Depot. I have two of them turned off because they were eternally in my way. (I didn't buy the thing for a kazillion buttons; I bought it for its optical accuracy.)
But you can throw buttons at a pointing device all day long; that doesn't mean the software you use will support them the way you describe. I quite agree that Illustrator's use of cursor menus is substandard compared to most applications.

Whenever I try to edit any of my songs or videos by right clicking and selecting "Get Info" it takes eons before the popup window appears. I am accessing my library on a secondary internal WD Caviar SE16 SATA 500gb drive. My 7yr old PC was somewhat slow, but this is ridiculous.

  • When downloading a file, if I right-click and select new the submenu is not displayed

I have Firefox 12 installed; running XP SP3. Options/General/Always ask me where to save files is selected. If I download a file and select save file, I will get a save file to dialog. If I right-click in the dialog and select new, there is no submenu displayed. As a consequence, I cannot create a new folder in which to save the selected file. New will simply try to create a shortcut.

That Save As dialog that you see is part of Windows Explorer, including the contextual menu including "New". So, this sounds more like you may have a problem at a more fundamental operating system level, because Firefox (as far as I know) doesn't do anything, or even can, modify the content of the context menus of an Explorer window.
Could you provide a screenshot of what you see to make sure we're talking about the same thing here? Thanks!

  • Clickpad Right Click not Working Consistantly

I just purchased an HP laptop with a Clickpad and reviewed your documentation for what areas on the pad to use for clicking however I can't seem to get a consistent right click even when I click in the area indicated by the diagram.  I can be almost in the bottom right corner of the pad's surface and still get a left click response.
Is there a trick to it I am missing or do I have a dud?

    Hello Kyraoko,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the right-clicking action on the touchpad, of your notebook, is not working properly. It is likely a hardware issue, to be honest. However, please try the following steps before assuming anything:
    1. Tap the upper-left corner of the touchpad a couple of times to turn it off, then turn it on. This is considered resetting the touchpad.
    2. Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset is the next step. A hard reset clears driver instructions, recent configurations, etc. This forces the hardware to reread all instructions from the drivers and software stored within Windows.
    3. Update the mouse/touchpad driver. These instructions will guide you along the right path:
    a. Go to the HP Drivers and Downloads webpage. Enter your computer model number and then click Go .
    b. Select your computer model from the list of results.
    c. Select your operating system from the drop down menu and then click Next.
    d. Scroll down to select the driver category "Driver - Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices".
    e. Click the Download button next to the appropriate TouchPad or ClickPad driver. The file downloads to your Downloads folder.
    f. Open your Downloads folder and double-click to install the latest driver. Follow on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Source: Using and Troubleshooting the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 8)
    4. If that doesn't work, we will have to try a more direct approach of reinstalling the mouse driver:
    a) Go into Device Manager, then "Mice and other pointing devices".
    b) Right-click on the touchpad driver, and select "Uninstall".
    c) Restart the computer. This will force a new driver to be written based on the detected hardware.
    5. Try connecting a USB mouse to the computer. Test it to see whether or not it is working properly.
If those steps do not help, then I would call HP phone support so they can physically address the hardware of the touchpad. You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks for posting, and have a great day!

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse right click not responding

I was happily using Final cut Pro but noticed that the right click on the mighty mouse wasn't working. I checked my settings of the mouse and confirmed that 'secondary button' was selected, but no right click was picked up in any application.
Rebooted Mac with no effect. Switched right button to 'Expose' but that wouldn't work either.
Solution: Took batteries out of mouse and reinserted. All now resolved.

Have you shut down (powered off) the Mac and restarted since this problem occurred? Have you turned OFF Bluetooth and turned it back ON? Have you checked the strength of the two batteries in the mouse?
The buttons not working does not sound like a typical cleaning or hardware issue (although the scroll ball not scrolling is probably a cleaning issue). It may be a software problem.
First, go to System Preferences +Keyboard & Mouse+ pane Mouse tab, and make some changes to the settings of the buttons that do not work. Change them any to a different setting. See if each change takes effect. If it does, change it back to the way it was before. This will rewrite the preference settings, and hopefully get those buttons working again.
I would also do the usual general trouble-shooting actions. Run Disk Utility and use the +Repair Disk Permissions+ routine. Then restart using the reset PRAM command.
